All Stars Head to Attica Coors Light Spring Nationals

CAMARGO, IL (4-10-06) – The All Star Circuit of Champions will head to the high banks of Attica Raceway Park for the 15th Annual Coors Light Spring Nationals this weekend, April 14th & 15th. Over the years this annual event has become a tradition in the state of Ohio signaling that the racing season is fully underway and warm weather won’t be far behind.

The All Stars will face the tough as nails Attica regulars on their own turf, but many of the All Star regulars have turned many laps at this North Central Ohio speed plant. Located in close proximity to Fremont Speedway, most of the weekly Attica regulars compete at both tracks and many of the top guns have moved up into the All Star ranks over the years.

This weekend we’ll face Byron Reed, Mike Linder, Mark Keegan, and a host of other Attica regulars as Greg Wilson, Butch Schroeder, Chad Blonde, Dale Blaney, Barry Ruble, Tim Hunter, Brandon Martin, Brock Mayes, Paul May, and James Mosher bring the All Star tradition back to Northern Ohio for the first time this season.

(Note: All Star member Danny Smith is currently taking some time away from racing due to an illness in his family. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers).

Cold Weather Chills Attica Action For Saturday

By Brian Liskai: ATTICA, Ohio (April 8, 2006) – Mother Nature finally got her way. Friday thunderstorms gave way to falling temperatures Saturday, April 8, forcing the cancellation of racing at Attica Raceway Park for the weekend.

“The wind is whipping in from the Northeast…right into the stands. They are calling for temperatures reaching only the low 40s during the day and dropping to the upper 20s by race time. Add that wind and it would be very, very uncomfortable for the fans and the race teams,” said Attica Operations Director Rex LeJeune.

A big weekend of racing is on tap at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” on Friday and Saturday, April 14 and 15, when the All Star Circuit of Champions open their northern schedule with the Coors Light Spring Nationals. The All Star sprints and limited late models are in action Friday while the 305 sprints join the All Star sprints on Saturday.

The Coors Light Spring Nationals have seen some of the best racing in the 19 year history of ARP. Frankie Kerr and 12-time ARP track champion Mark Keegan dominated the first three years of the nationals (1992-1994). In 1995 two new faces graced victory lane in Dale Blaney and Joey Saldana. Bobby Teeple shocked the racing community in 1996 by winning opening night of the nationals with Danny Smith finishing first the next night. Gary Wright and Butch Schroeder scored Coors Light Spring National wins in 1997, with Jeff Shepard and Frankie Kerr following in 1998. Only one night of racing was run in 1999-2001 because of rain, with Kenny Jacobs, Craig Dollansky and Byron Reed picking up victories. In 2002, Greg Wilson and Shepard picked up national wins, with Chad Kemenah and Wilson scoring victories in 2003. Kemenah would pick up the only nationals win in 2004.

The 2005 version of the Coors Light Spring Nationals was one of the most exciting on record. Stevie Smith and Craig Mintz battled on opening night, with Smith edging the Gibsonburg, Ohio youngster for the win. On the second night, it looked like Smith would cruise to the weekend sweep, only to get caught up in a tangle with a lapped car in the closing laps to allow Danny Smith to sneak by for the win.

Gates on Friday will open at 5 p.m. with racing slated for 8 pm. Gates will open at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday with racing at 7:30 p.m.

Admission prices are $20 for adults each night (16 and up); $18 for senior citizens; $15 for teens 11-15 years of age; and children 10 and under get in free. Pit passes are $25 per person each night.

Friday Racing Action Rained Out; Still On For Saturday

By Brian Liskai: ATTICA, Ohio (Friday, April 7, 2006) – Very heavy rains Friday morning forced the cancellation of racing at Attica Raceway Park for Friday, April 7. Plans to have the 410 sprints, 305 sprints and limited late models in action Saturday, April 8 are still on.

“The entire fairgrounds are saturated from the parking areas to the pits to the track,” said ARP Operations Manager Rex LeJeune. “There’s just not enough time to get the facility ready by race time. They’re also calling for more heavy rains later this afternoon.”

LeJeune said for now the raindate of Saturday, April 8 is still on, and should the weather change, a decision would be made early tomorrow to give race teams and fans time to make their plans.

Gates will open Saturday at 4:30 p.m. with racing slated for 7:30 p.m. (note this is a half hour earlier than for Friday’s shows).

General admission tickets for adults are $14 each; $12 for senior citizens; $10 for teens 11-15; and children 10 and under are free. Visa and Mastercard are accepted.

For more information call the track phone at 419-426-8911 or the track office at 419-680-5606. Or log onto www.atticaracewaypark.com

And, for the second straight week, the following day – Saturday, April 8 – is a rain date for “Ohio’s Finest Racing” venue.

On Friday, gates will open at 5 p.m. with racing set to begin a 8 p.m. If racing is postponed until Saturday, gates will open at 4:30 p.m. and racing will start at 7:30 p.m.

Reed, Weaver, Kingseed score Attica openers

By Brian Liskai: (Friday, 31 March 2006) In the 25-lap 305 feature, Miller jumped into the lead from his outside front row starting spot, with Duane Zablocki battling him hard the opening laps, and Weaver in third. On lap 10, Weaver went high and Miller went low around the lapped car of rookie Benny Bowman, making contact and sending Bowman flipping into the front stretch wall. Bowman, whose helmet flew off during the crash, was bruised but otherwise okay. On the restart, Miller again built a sizeable lead, only to watch it fade away as he got into lapped traffic. Weaver used the slower cars as a pick and drove around the high side of Miller on lap 19, with Miller making contact with the lapped traffic and stopping on the track, ending his run.

Weaver cruised to the win over Andy Shammo who held off a fast closing Chris Andrews, Kevin Lee, Stuart Brubaker, Bill Kraylek, Brad Bowman, Todd Heuerman, Scott Kraylek and Dustin Dinan.

“I tried the bottom a few times because I figured I couldn’t move Jamie (Miller) off the top. We got into lapped traffic and he went low and I stayed up top and it worked. Then it was a matter of the car handling so much better in clean air,” said Weaver beside his Weaver-Koonce Construction/Levell Performance Engines #1W.

Kingseed jumped into the early lead of the limited late model main, only to see last year’s Attica rookie of the year Ryan Missler take it away four laps later. The battle heated up when Mike Marteney joined the fray. Missler would drop out with mechanical problems – which befell many of the cars in the feature – handing the lead back to Kingseed. Marteney would exit a few laps later with mechanical woes. Meanwhile, the 2004 ARP champion, Chester Fitch had stayed out of trouble and was charging through the pack from his tail starting spot. Kingseed would score the win, with Fitch finishing second, followed by Josh Steinacker, Jeff McCoy, Chris Keller, Art Ball, Chuck Hummer, Bill Clapp Jr., Steve Sabo and Nate Potts, as only 10 cars were left from the 20 car field at the checkered.

“I just tried to hit my marks…the car was very driveable so I could get around traffic,” said Kingseed beside his Strawberry Hill Farm Market #21. “This old cast-iron motor still has a lot of life left in it.”

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, April 7, with the 410 sprints, 305 sprints and limited late models in action. In case of rain, Saturday, April 8 is the raindate.
