Ivy gets back to winning ways; Weaver scores 4th victory at ARP; Marteney, Davis victorious

By Brian Liskai: ATTICA, Ohio (Friday, June 16, 2006) – At the end of the 2005 racing season, Fremont’s John Ivy announced he was going to take some time off from 410 sprint car racing. That self-imposed retirement didn’t last too long, and Ivy once again found victory lane at Attica Raceway Park on East of Chicago Pizza/Strawberry Hill Farm Market night Friday.

In the 305 sprints, Fremont’s Paul Weaver took his fourth feature win of the year at ARP. Former track champion Mike Marteney of Bellevue found victory lane for the first time this season in the limited late models, as did Fremont’s Bobby Davis in the dirt trucks.

In the non-stop, 30-lap 410 sprint feature, Ivy shot around pole sitter Todd Heller exiting turn four on the second lap and set sail. The battle for second was furious between Heller, Mark Keegan and Brandon Wimmer for the next 14 laps.

At the half-way mark, Ivy had put several lapped cars between himself and Heller, with Wimmer, Keegan and 16th starting Byron Reed rounding out the top five. With just seven laps to go, Ivy had lapped up to 11th place, with Reed moving around Wimmer into second, Keegan in fourth and now 13th starting Bobby Clark moving into the top five.

Reed ran out of laps, as Ivy powered home the winner, with Wimmer, Clark and Keegan rounding out the top five.

“I have to thank Dee Genzman for convincing me I could still gitter’ done,” said Ivy. “I also want to thank Dennis Levell…he built us one hell of a motor, and to Andy and Lynn Potter for working so hard on this thing.”

“I told the guys I probably would screw this up because I haven’t started this far up front (third) in a long time and I’m not used to not seeing 15 other cars in front of me,” said Ivy.

In the 305 sprint feature, Shelby’s Benny Bowman jumped to the early lead until Mark Whaley powered to the point on lap 7. However, all eyes were on Weaver, who had moved from his 13th starting spot to third by lap 8. Weaver slid into second a lap later and rocketed off the bottom of turn four to take the lead from Whaley a lap latter. Weaver would put a three lapped-car cushion between himself and second running Andy Shammo when the only caution would fly on lap 17. No one would catch Weaver as he went on to score his 18th career Attica victory – to move into third on the all-time 305 sprint feature win list – over Shammo, Chris Andrews, Bowman, and Kevin Lee.

“When they watered the track after hotlaps, it made it very racey. I just stayed on the bottom and was patient and the race came to me,” said Weaver beside his Weaver-Koonce Construction, Levell Performance sponsored #1w.

In the limited late model feature, Marteney would lead all 20 laps, surviving numerous cautions to claim his 18th career ARP victory, to move him to sixth on the all time win list. It wasn’t easy for the driver of the York Fabrication/Quality Welding/Sports Hut sponsored #45, as Tiffin’s Jeff McCoy and last week’s feature winner Gibsonburg’s Bill Hahn pressured him he last six laps.

“Finally….it seems like forever since we were on the horse track,” said Marteney about visiting victory lane. “I knew I had to stick to the bottom….if I didn’t let anyone get a nose under me I was okay.”

The 15-lap dirt truck feature was very entertaining, as there was often three wide racing from first through 10th. When the dust settled, 2005 Fremont Speedway truck champion Bobby Davis edged out Risingson’s Steve Endicott for his first career ARP win.

“That was quite a battle. I saw Steve outside of me the last five laps and I just tried not to move off the bottom. I knew Bob (Dible) was right on my bumper…I just had to be smooth. Those guys are great racers…they race you clean and hard,” said Davis beside his Crown Battery/Smith Automotive/Al Davis Carpet sponsored #40.

Besides many fan give-aways from East of Chicago Pizza, Strawberry Hill Farm Market gave each heat race winner in all the divisions a case of fresh strawberries. Also O.F. Machinging of Carey, Ohio, gave the winner of the 305 feature a set of steering gear clamps, nose wing straps and brake caliber brackets, along with brake caliper and nose wing brackets for the second place car and brake caliper brackets and nose wing straps for the winner of the 305 B-main.

“Ohio’s Finest Racing” venue has a busy weekend ahead. Quality Welding of Bellevue sponsored the racing on Friday, June 23 with the 410 sprints, 305 sprints and the Sunoco American Late Models in action. Then Sunday, June 25, ARP kicks off the traditional All Star Circuit of Champions Ohio Sprint Speedweek which sees seven straight nights of 410 sprint racing at 7 different Ohio tracks. Gates will open on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

A night of firsts at Attica Raceway Park

By Brian Liskai: ATTICA, Ohio (Friday, June 9, 2006) – On a night when Attica Raceway Park honored its past champions, it was drivers earning their first career wins that stole the spot light.

Former two-time ARP 305 sprint champion Bryan Scott picked up his first 410 sprint win at “Ohio’s Finest Racing,” while veteran late model driver Bill Hahn scored his first win in the limited late models and Dan Roepke took his first Attica checkered in the dirt trucks. A.J. Sleek picked up his second career win in the 305 sprints on Legendz Sports Bar & Grill Night.

For Scott, the win was doubly nice, as the Clyde, Ohio driver destroyed a car a few weeks ago at Attica.

“We bought this car off Mark Keegan and the first night out I told the guys this was a better car than the new one…wrecking that car may have been the best thing that happened to us. We won with this one the first night out and now here we are in victory lane again,” said Scott beside his Burns Iron & Metal/Fremont Auto Parts sponsored #37z. “Guy Meyers just knows something about setting a car up to run well in the middle of the track…anyone could have driven this thing to victory tonight.”

Sleek led all 25 of the caution-free laps of the 305 feature, though lapped traffic would make it close at the end.

“It helps to start up front. Everyone was running the bottom and I couldn’t get around the lapped traffic. I just had to be patient,” said Sleek beside his Randy Beeker Excavating/Uptown Country Band #15. “We haven’t done a lot of racing on Friday night…we’re going to have to come back here more often.”

Gibsonburg’s Bill Hahn has driven late models for nearly 40 years. He was close to picking up a win at ARP a couple of weeks ago, only to bang doors with Mike Bores, having to settle for second.

“This is my son Ken’s car. He lets me race it on Fridays and he races it on Saturdays.I knew everyone was going to try the bottom, so I went up top and it stuck,” said Hahn beside his Bostwick-Braun Company sponsored #27.

Woodville’s Danny Roepke battled with early leader Art Ball, making contact with the veteran exiting turn four before going on to the victory.

“We have a lot of seconds here. I worked on this thing all week…I was determined to get a win here,” said Roepke beside his Village Inn/Adler’s Transmission sponsored #53.

Attica’s Brandon Martin jumped into the early lead at the start of the 30-lap 410 sprint feature, with Andrew Palker, Todd Kane and Scott in tow. By lap 11, Scott had moved up to second when the only yellow would fly for a spinning Mike Burkin. On the restart, Scott looked under Martin exiting turn two, and then drove to the outside to take the lead off turn four.

Scott would then cruise to the win, with Martin hanging on to second, Lee Jacobs would pass Palker late in the race for third, and Greg Wilson rounding out the top five.

In the 305 sprint main, Gibsonburg’s Sleek would jump into the lead from his pole starting spot, but he couldn’t shake Stuart Brubaker who hounded him until they hit lapped traffic by lap 14 of the 25-lap affair. This allowed Kevin Lee and Paul Weaver to reel the duo in. By lap 18, Sleek held a slight advantage over Brubaker who was feeling the pressure from Lee. A lap later Lee would get by Brubaker for the runner-up position with Weaver moving into third on lap 20.

Sleek still had trouble with lapped traffic, allowing Lee and Weaver to close, but they would run out of laps. At the checkered, it was Sleek, Weaver, Lee, Brubaker and Coty Runion.

In the limited late model feature, Mike Marteney jumped into the early lead, with Chester Fitch and Brandon Perkins in tow. Perkins used the low groove to take the lead on lap 7. Two laps later, Perkins lead over Marteney, Fitch and Hahn who had started eighth. The only caution would fall on lap 10 with the running order, Perkins, Marteney, Fitch, Hahn and Larry Kingseed. When the green replaced the yellow, Marteney would to up top to race door to door with Perkins for the lead, with Hahn moving along side of Fitch for third. Hahn rocketed off the top of turn four to pass both Perkins and Marteney two laps later. He would take the checkered over Perkins, with Tim Sabo picking up third from his 12th starting spot. Ryan Missler would move into fourth from his 10th starting spot at the finish, with Marteney rounding out the top five.

Art Ball would jump into the lead from his pole starting spot at the drop of the green for the 15-lap dirt truck feature, with John Warnick and Roepke in tow. On lap five, Roepke would move around Warnick, setting his sights on Ball. Three laps later, Roepke and Ball would trade paint exiting turn four, with Roepke taking the lead. The contact would cause Ball’s left front tire to lose air, but he would hang on to finish third behind Brian Arnold.

Attica honored its track champions from the last 18 years prior to the racing action. There have been 5 champions in the 410 sprint ranks; 14 in the 305 sprint division; and 9 in the street stocks/limited late models over those 18 years.

Past champions in attendance included 12-time 410 sprint champion Mark Keegan; 2-time 410 sprint champion Byron Reed; John Ivy who won a 410 sprint title along with a 305 sprint championship; Mike Linder who won three championships in the 305 sprint ranks; Bryan Scott, who owns two titles in the 305 sprints; Phil Gressman who has two 305 sprint titles; Joe Keegan who won the track’s first 305 sprint title; Scott Miller, the 1991 305 sprint champ; Clay Keim, the 1992 305 sprint champion; Jody Keegan, the 1999 305 sprint champ; Caleb Griffith, the 2003 305 sprint champion; Brian Smith, the 2004 305 sprint champion; Larry Kingseed, who owns four track titles in the limited late models; Butch Schroeder (now a 410 sprint driver) who has three street stock titles; Art Ball with two limited late model championships; John Mayes, the 1998 limited late champ; Mike Marteney, the 2001 limited late champion; and Chester Fitch, the 2004 limited late model champion.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, June 16 with East of Chicago Pizza/Strawberry Hill Farm Market Night with the 410 sprints, 305 sprints, limited late models and dirt trucks in action. Gates open at 5 p.m. with racing slated to begin at 8 p.m.

Big Purse for big show at Attica Raceway Park

By Brian Liskai: ATTICA, Ohio (Tuesday, May 23, 2006) – When royalty comes to town, you had better roll out the red carpet, or in racing’s case, the green cash!

Such is the case when “The King,” Steve Kinser, Danny Lasoski, Tim Kaeding and the rest of the stars of the National Sprint Tour visit Attica Raceway Park Friday, May 26. Thanks to sponsor Kistler Engines of Fremont, the feature event will pay $10,000 to win!

The NST visit also presents a great opportunity for the Attica “regulators” to earn some cash. The total purse for the night’s racing is over $53,000!

“The feature will pay $800 to start, with 10th finishing position paying $2,000 and 15th paying $1,000,” said ARP Operations Director Rex LeJeune. “The total A-main purse is $49,400.”

The first non-transfer position in the B-main will pay $400, while the B-main pays $150 to start.

There are still reserved seats remaining – the top 10 rows are all reserved seats – for $30 ($32 if using Visa or MasterCard). Call the track office at 419-426-8911 for more information.

The fans will also play an important part of the program. Children’s ticket numbers will be pulled, with the winners drawing the pill for the starting position of the drivers in the two dashes which determine the starting line-up for the A-main. The lucky fan who draws the starting spot of the dash winners will get to visit the driver later on and gets that driver’s t-shirt.

There will also be an autograph session with NST drivers between 5-6 p.m.

The pits will open at ARP Friday at 3:30 p.m. with spectator gates opening 4:30 p.m.
