Ivy gets back to winning ways; Weaver scores 4th victory at ARP; Marteney, Davis victorious
By Brian Liskai: ATTICA, Ohio (Friday, June 16, 2006) – At the end of the 2005 racing season, Fremont’s John Ivy announced he was going to take some time off from 410 sprint car racing. That self-imposed retirement didn’t last too long, and Ivy once again found victory lane at Attica Raceway Park on East of Chicago Pizza/Strawberry Hill Farm Market night Friday.
In the 305 sprints, Fremont’s Paul Weaver took his fourth feature win of the year at ARP. Former track champion Mike Marteney of Bellevue found victory lane for the first time this season in the limited late models, as did Fremont’s Bobby Davis in the dirt trucks.
In the non-stop, 30-lap 410 sprint feature, Ivy shot around pole sitter Todd Heller exiting turn four on the second lap and set sail. The battle for second was furious between Heller, Mark Keegan and Brandon Wimmer for the next 14 laps.
At the half-way mark, Ivy had put several lapped cars between himself and Heller, with Wimmer, Keegan and 16th starting Byron Reed rounding out the top five. With just seven laps to go, Ivy had lapped up to 11th place, with Reed moving around Wimmer into second, Keegan in fourth and now 13th starting Bobby Clark moving into the top five.
Reed ran out of laps, as Ivy powered home the winner, with Wimmer, Clark and Keegan rounding out the top five.
“I have to thank Dee Genzman for convincing me I could still gitter’ done,” said Ivy. “I also want to thank Dennis Levell…he built us one hell of a motor, and to Andy and Lynn Potter for working so hard on this thing.”
“I told the guys I probably would screw this up because I haven’t started this far up front (third) in a long time and I’m not used to not seeing 15 other cars in front of me,” said Ivy.
In the 305 sprint feature, Shelby’s Benny Bowman jumped to the early lead until Mark Whaley powered to the point on lap 7. However, all eyes were on Weaver, who had moved from his 13th starting spot to third by lap 8. Weaver slid into second a lap later and rocketed off the bottom of turn four to take the lead from Whaley a lap latter. Weaver would put a three lapped-car cushion between himself and second running Andy Shammo when the only caution would fly on lap 17. No one would catch Weaver as he went on to score his 18th career Attica victory – to move into third on the all-time 305 sprint feature win list – over Shammo, Chris Andrews, Bowman, and Kevin Lee.
“When they watered the track after hotlaps, it made it very racey. I just stayed on the bottom and was patient and the race came to me,” said Weaver beside his Weaver-Koonce Construction, Levell Performance sponsored #1w.
In the limited late model feature, Marteney would lead all 20 laps, surviving numerous cautions to claim his 18th career ARP victory, to move him to sixth on the all time win list. It wasn’t easy for the driver of the York Fabrication/Quality Welding/Sports Hut sponsored #45, as Tiffin’s Jeff McCoy and last week’s feature winner Gibsonburg’s Bill Hahn pressured him he last six laps.
“Finally….it seems like forever since we were on the horse track,” said Marteney about visiting victory lane. “I knew I had to stick to the bottom….if I didn’t let anyone get a nose under me I was okay.”
The 15-lap dirt truck feature was very entertaining, as there was often three wide racing from first through 10th. When the dust settled, 2005 Fremont Speedway truck champion Bobby Davis edged out Risingson’s Steve Endicott for his first career ARP win.
“That was quite a battle. I saw Steve outside of me the last five laps and I just tried not to move off the bottom. I knew Bob (Dible) was right on my bumper…I just had to be smooth. Those guys are great racers…they race you clean and hard,” said Davis beside his Crown Battery/Smith Automotive/Al Davis Carpet sponsored #40.
Besides many fan give-aways from East of Chicago Pizza, Strawberry Hill Farm Market gave each heat race winner in all the divisions a case of fresh strawberries. Also O.F. Machinging of Carey, Ohio, gave the winner of the 305 feature a set of steering gear clamps, nose wing straps and brake caliber brackets, along with brake caliper and nose wing brackets for the second place car and brake caliper brackets and nose wing straps for the winner of the 305 B-main.
“Ohio’s Finest Racing” venue has a busy weekend ahead. Quality Welding of Bellevue sponsored the racing on Friday, June 23 with the 410 sprints, 305 sprints and the Sunoco American Late Models in action. Then Sunday, June 25, ARP kicks off the traditional All Star Circuit of Champions Ohio Sprint Speedweek which sees seven straight nights of 410 sprint racing at 7 different Ohio tracks. Gates will open on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
