Scouts Should "be prepared" For Free Fun On May 5th

By Brian Liskai: ATTICA, Ohio (Monday, April 24, 2006) – All Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and Brownies better “be prepared” for free fun and entertainment at Attica Raceway Park.

All scouts are invited to “Ohio’s Finest Racing” at the Attica Fairgrounds – located just north of U.S. 224 and just east of St. Rt. 4 – on Friday, May 5 as part of Pepsi Night/Scouts Night. All you scouts need to do is show up with your scout uniform on and you will get into watch the mudslinging, fire-breathing sprint cars and late models FREE!

Attica Raceway Park is a 3/8th mile banked dirt track with cars racing in speeds of over 100 mph.

Gates will open at 5 p.m. and racing will begin at 8 p.m. If time permits, there will be an autograph session around 7:30 p.m. with some of the drivers for the scouts to meet and talk to.

Also, any scouts 10-years-old and under will be eligible to win a FREE BIKE!

There is great food available at reasonable prices, from pizza to hamburgers and hotdogs to walking tacos and much more.

Improvements Underway At Attica Raceway Park

By Brian Liskai: ATTICA, Ohio (Saturday, April 22, 2006) – No one was happy with the track conditions Friday, April 21, at Attica Raceway Park…especially promoter and limited late model racer John Bores. Bores and crew were up bright and early Saturday to begin work to improve the surface for better – and more importantly – safer racing.

“Attica Raceway Park would like to apologize to the drivers, race teams and fans for the track conditions Friday night. The track was extremely hard and dry from all the racing during the two-day Coors Light Spring Nationals last weekend. The track prep team started watering and preparing the racing surface from Wednesday evening through Friday afternoon,” explained Bores.

“Due to the hard compacted clay below, the water did not soak in properly. Subsequently the track could not be run in and prepared properly,” Bores continued.

Friday afternoon’s hot and humid conditions and intermitent rain also contributed to track prep woes.

In an all-out effort to make “Ohio’s Finest Racing” venue the best it can be, the track crew went back to work early Saturday, ripping and disking the hard pan soil and regrading the race track.

One of the more fascinating tools Bores was able to utilize via his company (UUI) is setting GPS coordinates for the grader so the track can be returned to original condition if it becomes dished out or crowns in the middle. The technology is so accurate that apparently if desired a completed duplicate of the track configuration could be built based off the coordinates.

“The entire Attica Raceway Park staff appreciates the patience of the fans, drivers and race teams and their support,” said ARP Operations Manager Rex LeJeune.

Racing continues at Attica Raceway Park Friday, April 28 with Bazell Race Fuel Night featuring the winged 410 sprints, 305 sprints and Sunoco American Late Model Series. Gates open at 5 p.m. with racing at 8 p.m.

Tim Sabo Claims Attica Loot before Rains Halt Action

By Brian Liskai: ATTICA, Ohio (Friday, April 21, 2006) – It looked like Attica Raceway Park would escape the wrath of Mother Nature for the second week in a row. While rains pounded the surrounding area, the racing action at Attica on Underground Utilities Night was full go Friday….until lap 13 of the 410 sprint main when the skies opened up, forcing cancellation of the remaining
features.

Before the rains, Fremont’s Tim Sabo used his wealth of experience to power around the younger drivers on a very heavy and rough track to score a $1,000 pay day in the limited late model feature.

Sabo drove around early leader Larry Kingseed on lap three and sped away from the field. Gibsonburg veteran Bill Hahn got around Kingseed with a handful of laps remaining to take second, with Kingseed, who had won the previous two features at ARP , third, Brandon Perkins, Chris Killer, Jeff McCoy, Steve Sabo, Bill Clapp Jr., Mike Bores and Chuck Hummer rounding out the top 10.

“I have to thank Josh Caster and their family for putting me in their late model,” said Sabo beside his Dave and Maryann Stout, Bill Frankart, Level Performance sponsored #98. “These youngsters don’t know how to attack a heavy track…I’ve been around long enough to know how to do that.”

The 410 sprints got 13 of the 30 lap A-main in the books before the rains fell. World of Outlaws regular Chad Kemenah – making an appearance after their show was rained out in Indiana earlier – took the lead from Ron Blair with a great low move exiting turn four to complete the 13th lap. When the race resumes, Kemenah will be leading Blair, Lee Jacobs, Brandon Martin and Andrew Palker.

Attica officials will announce in the near feature when the remaining laps of the 410 feature will be run. The 305 sprints will run double features during a yet-to-be-determined night of racing.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, April 28, with Bazell Race Fuels Night featuring the 410 sprints, 305 sprints and the Sunoco American Late Models.

Wilson Backs Up Prediction With All Star Win

By Brian Liskai: ATTICA, Ohio (Saturday, April 15, 2006) – Greg Wilson made a prediction from victory lane after winning the All Star Circuit of Champions dash Saturday on the second night of the Coors Light Spring Nationals at Attica Raceway Park: “I’ll be back up here in a little while.”

Wilson made good on that promise to claim the 40 lap feature win, his first for new owner Verl Warnimont. The win moved the Benton Ridge, Ohio driver into the All Star point lead.

“We always run good at Attica. To accomplish this first win for Verl in front of this huge crowd is just awesome,” said Wilson beside his All Star Plumbing and Heating sponsored w20. “I found a good line, high around one and two and low around three and four and my crew just gave me an easy car to drive. It was just a matter of saving the tires and not slipping off the
edge.”

Wilson dedicated the victory to fellow All Star competitor Danny Smith, whose wife succomed to cancer earlier in the day.

“This is such a sad day for our racing family. Danny is a great guy and our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family,” said Wilson.

The 35 drivers signing into the pits on the second night of racing at Attica saw a much different surface. The heavy cushion gave way to a smooth, slick, racey surface that saw three grooves of racing.

Stevie Smith jumped into the lead from his pole starting spot in the feature and built a commanding lead over Brock Mayes and Wilson and battled back and forth.Catastrophe struck Smith on lap 18, as he made contact with a lapped machine in turn two and spun, sending him to the tail. At last year’s Spring Nationals, Smith encountered the exact same situation late in the race, when contact with a lapped car gave the win to Danny Smith.

On the restart, Wilson had two lapped cars between he and second place Mayes, with fast qualifier Kevin Huntley in third, followed by Byron Reed, Butch Schroeder, Mark Keegan, Mike Linder and Craig Mintz.

While Wilson cruised to a commanding lead positions third through eighth changed every lap.

At the half way mark, Wilson led over Mayes, Huntley, Schroeder, Keegan and Reed. On lap 28, Huntley and Mayes waged the battle for second. The second and last caution of the feature would fly on lap 31 for a spinning Reed. On the restart Wilso would have a three lap car advantage over Mayes, Huntley, Keegan, Mintz, Linder, and now a fast closing Dale Blaney who had started 14th.

With five laps to go, all eyes were on Smith, who had steadily worked his way from the tail after his spin to seventh. With three laps to go, Wilson was cruising, and Blaney had moved into second, with Mayes third, Linder fourth and now Smith into fifth. Smith used the very bottom of the track in turns three and four to move around Linder the next lap by and went to the high side around Mayes in turns one and two to take third.

Wilson held a five car length advantage at the checkered, with Blaney, Smith, Linder, Mayes, Mintz, Huntley, Keegan, Schroeder, and Bryan Scott rounding out the top 10.

“We had a good weekend for the first time out this year…a second and a fifth,” said Blaney beside his George Fisher #2. “It was just a matter of being patient and staying in your groove.”

Smith was upset with himself after tangling with the lapped machine.

“I was too worried about where Greg was running and not concentrating on where I needed to be. After I spun, I just had to calm down…I knew I had a good car. I just went back to the line I should have been running and started picking them off. My hat’s off to Greg, he ran a good race.”

In the 305 sprint main, front row starters Paul Weaver and Bobby Foster made contact exiting turn two on the start, sending Foster into the infield with a broken front end. Weaver then cut his way through lapped traffic to pick up his second straight win at Attica.

“It’s easy when you start up front. This is a great way to start the season…hopefully there will be many more of these,” said Weaver beside his M&L Excavating, Levell Performance sponsored #1w.

Behind Weaver at the checkered was 2005 Attica track champion Jamie Miller, up from his 12th starting spot, Chris Andrews, Kevin Lee, Bryan Sebetto, Scott Kraylek, Andy Shammo (up from 18th), Chris Lang, Craig Kays (up from 19th) and Stuart Brubaker who flipped on the opening lap, made repairs in time to rejoin the tail and come from the back of the pack.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action on Friday, April 21, as Underground Utilities Inc. sponsors the night’s racing with the 410 sprints, 305 sprints and the limited late models who will be running for $1,000 to win.

McCarl Survives Feature To Win Opening Night Of Coors Light All Star Spring Nationals

By Brian Liskai: ATTICA, Ohio (April 14, 2006) – It’s called a sprint car race, but the opening night of the 15th Annual Coors Light Spring Nationals for the All Star Circuit of Champions at Attica Raceway Park was more like a marathon, with Altoona, Iowa’s Terry McCarl surviving for the victory.

The 40-lap feature took over an hour before the checkered flew, as there were three red flags and four cautions slowing the action.

McCarl, who currently sits third in the World Of Outlaws point standings, admitted he was nervous leading.

“I have had so many shows won here only to slip off the banking. They did a nice job with the track tonight and you could race all over the place,” said McCarl beside his Big Game Tree Stand, Bosma Poultry sponsored #24. “This wasn’t easy by any means. The All Stars are tough and the Attica regulars always race you hard. I screwed up at one point…moving my wing too far back and it made the car too tight. On that last restart I moved the wing forward and the car just took off.”

The start of the feature saw Kevin Huntly spin in turn one. On the restart, 2005 ARP champion Byron Reed and Paul May flipped hard down the front stretch. The third time wasn’t the charm, as Ryan Coniam looped his Miller Rigging car in turn four on the next restart.

On the fourth try, Mark Keegan, the all-time winningest driver at Attica, bolted into the lead from his outside front row starting spot, with Greg Wilson, Andrew Palker, McCarl and Stevie Smith in tow. The red would fly on lap five when Jon Trudeau tipped over in turn four, as Rob Chaney, driving a team car to Craig Mintz, stopping to avoid the crash.

Before the green would waive, Palker, who had moved into second, would duck into the pits to replaced his fuel cap and would have to go to the tail. On the restart Keegan used the rim to build a lead over Wilson, Smith, David Harrison and Mike Linder who had moved up from his 15th starting spot. All eyes were on Todd Kane who had moved from 17th up to ninth.

Just two laps later the caution would fly again for a Brock Mayes spin in turn two. The running order now was Keegan, McCarl, Wilson, Smith, Harrison, Linder, Dale Blaney, Chad Blonde, Kane and fast qualifier Butch Schroeder.

McCarl would execute his winning move on the restart, using the slide job to move in front of Keegan exiting turn four. The caution would fly a lap later for a Huntley spin. With 32 laps to go it was McCarl, Keegan, Wilson, Linder, Smith, Harrison and Blonde, up from 16th.

After the restart, McCarl pulled away, but the yellow would come out again on lap 14, as Wilson slid off the high side of turn two and would coast to a stop in turn four with a flat tire. McCarl would lead on the restart with the lapped car of Caleb Griffith between he and Keegan. Linder had moved into third with Smith fourth, Blonde up to fifth, Harrison and Kane in tow.

A lap later disaster would strike in turn three as Kane ended up on his lid. Once the track went back to green, the longest run of the feature would take place, as McCarl built a lead only to have it vanish in heavy lapped traffic as Keegan and Blonde closed. The final caution would fly on lap 30 for Harrison who slid off of turn three. That gave McCarl a clear track and he
pulled away for the win. Behind him though, Keegan and Blonde raced side by side for second, with the All Star Rookie of the Year candidate from Litchfield, Mich., edging Keegan at the line. Linder would come home fourth, followed by Dale Blaney, Smith, Rob Chaney, Lee Jacobs, Jimmy Stinson and Coniam rounding out the top 10.

In the limited late model feature, Larry Kingseed and Jeff McCoy raced side by side the last five laps of the feature, with Kingseed winning by a nose at the checkered for his second Attica win of the season.

“Jeff McCoy is one of the best drivers out here. He raced me clean and I did the same for him…those last few laps were a blast,” said Kingseed beside his John M. Allen Co., A&S Graphics sponsored #21.
