Wilson roars through the pack for Attica win; Weaver, Andrews, Kingseed score victories

By Brian Liskai: ATTICA, Ohio (Friday, May 5, 2006) – When Greg Wilson came to draw the pill for his heat race starting spot Friday at Attica Raceway Park, he displayed all the confidence of a racer expecting to walk away with the night’s feature victory.

A poor starting spot in the 30-lap A-main was of little consequence to the Benton Ridge, Ohio driver. He roared through the pack from his 13th starting spot, and took the lead from Byron Reed with a great pass off turn four with just four laps remaining and went on to the victory, his second of the season at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” venue on Pepsi/Scouts Night.

“We have been very fast here. I knew I could get to the front if I was patient. I knew on that last restart I was better than Byron in three and four,” said Wilson, who now has 13 career victories at Attica, tying him for sixth on the all-time win list with Frankie Kerr. “Our teammate won at Lima tonight, so this is a good night for our owner, Veryl Warnimont and our
sponsors All Star Plumbing and Heating. My hat’s off to the crew who puts in all the hours in the shop all week.”

It was a busy night for the 305 sprints as they had a make-up feature from the rained out April 21 Underground Utilities Night in addition to the full program on Pepsi Night. Paul Weaver charged into the lead on lap 13 and went on to claim the make-up feature. Weaver and Chris Andrews would pass and repass each other on the last lap of the regular feature before Andrews would record his second win in as many weeks.

“We just kept the car on the bottom and tried to stay smooth,” exclaimed Weaver in victory lane for the third time this season at Attica.

Weaver thanked his sponsors, M&L Excavating, Level Performance and Weaver Konce Construction. He now has 17 career ARP victories, putting him in fourth on the all-time win list.

For Andrews, the 2006 season has been all about confidence.

“We came into the year with a change in attitude. We had new equipment and a new confidence,” Andrews said beside his Goofy Golf, Adkins Sanitation sponsored #15c. “I love racing Paul Weaver…he’s very tough, but you know he’ll race you clean. I hate that I made contact with him coming down for the checkered, but it was for the win! When Paul went around me after we took the white flag, I knew if I didn’t over react, I would get another shot at him in three and four.”

Larry Kingseed was able to take advantage of Mike Marteney’s misfortune to claim his third win of the season in the limited late model feature. It was Kingseed’s 19th career ARP win, putting him in fifth on the all-time win list.

“I was bidding my time with Mike…he was fast and I knew I had my work cut out for me. Then I saw he broke something on the front suspension and I knew I had the win wrapped up. We are on a roll now and I’m going to do my best to keep it going,” said Kingseed beside his John M. Allen Co., A&S Graphics sponsored stock car.

In the 410 feature, Todd Heller jumped into the early lead only to see margins disappear with a yellow on lap six. Wilson had worked his way up to 7th. Reed dove under Heller to take the lead a lap after the green flew. The caution would fly on lap 12 with the running order Reed, David Harrison, Brandon Martin, Heller, Wilson and last week’s winner Brock Mayes, up from his 17th starting spot.

The yellow would again fly at the halfway mark with Reed now leading over Martin, Harrison, whose front wing was smashed onto the car’s hood, Wilson, Heller, Mayes, Phil Gressman and Bryan Scott. Wilson would dispose of Harrison a lap lader to move into third, bringing Mayes into the fourth. On lap 23, Wilson moved into second and began pressuring Reed.

The race would grind to a halt on lap 25 when Scott took a nasty flip off of turn two. He was taken to the hospital for a check-up, but exited his damaged car under his own power. On the restart, Wilson would make his winning move exiting turn four.

“I’m ready for the World of Outlaws…I’m excited and a bit nervous,” exclaimed Wilson about the national touring group’s visit to ARP on Friday, May 12.

It looked like Weaver would make it a clean-sweep at ARP. After winning the make-up feature in convincing fashion, he started on the pole of the regular A-main. But, at the drop of the green, it was Brad Bowman who took the top spot from the outside row, with Andrews getting around Weaver for second. However, Bowman would slide off the high side of turn three on lap 13, handing the lead to Andrews. By lap 23, Weaver was on Andrews’ tail as they hit lapped traffic. Enter Bryan Sebetto who moved in on the two top runners in traffic to challenge. with two laps to go, Andrews, Weaver and Sebetto were nearly three wide for the lead. As the leaders took the white flag, Weaver used a lapped machine as a pick and executed a slide job on Andrews in turns one and two for the lead. But, Andrews raced to his inside exiting turn two and they were neck and neck down the backstretch. This time it was Andrews who executed the slide job in three and four and after a slight bump with Weaver, went on to the win.

After Marteney dropped out on lap 16 with mechanical woes, Kingseed held off a late race challenge from Mike Bores to claim the limited late model feature win.

The World of Outlaw Sprints come to Attica Friday, May 12 on Kistler Engines Night. There are still great reserved seating available. Go to www.atticaracewaypark.com for information.

Jason Meyers claims NST loot at Attica

By Scott Hall: ATTICA, OH – When the National Sprint Tour made their Ohio debut Sunday night at Attica Raceway Park, it was the 11 NST touring stars vs. the strong local Attica contingent. When the dust cleared after 40 laps, it was Jason Myers earning the $10,000 payday in the race sponsored by Kistler Engines. It was race number 10 for the NST this season. Myers flew back to Ohio after running second in a race at Calistoga, California Saturday night to run the event which was slowed ten times by cautions. Ohio drivers dale Blaney and Byron Reed ran second and third.

“Finally we got a win,” Meyers related in victory lane. “My engine builder Charlie Garrett, Hoosier Tires, Maxim chassis and everyone on the crew did a great job tonight. What a blessing to drive for this race team. We’ve had a good year, we just haven’t got to victory lane and we finally got ‘er done.” D.J. Lindsey provided the mechanical knowledge on the Elite Landscaping machine. Meyers ran down early race leader Byron Reed and made his winning pass on lap 25.

By virtue of winning the first Dash, Meyers got lane choice and started on the pole, with Reed alongside, and Paul McMahan and Blaney in row two. Reed took the immediate lead, with Meyers in tow. Just as the leaders were set to enter lapped traffic on lap nine, Tim Shaffer stopped on the track, bringing out a yellow and putting a clear racetrack in front of Reed.

Reed led until lap 25, when Myers put a nice slide job move on the leader exiting turn four to take the lead. Reed began to fade and was fourth on lap 28 when another caution flew. Myers led the next portion of the race with Solwold in second. Solwold was poised to make a pass in heavy lapped traffic on lap 37 when Solwold ran into 17th place Brian Paulus and the pair spun. This was the 10th caution of the event, so a red was thrown for a fuel stop. The running order for the final three lap dash to the finish was now Myers, Blaney, Reed, McMahan, Kinser, all the way back from starting last on a lap one restart and Shane Stewart, who started eighth. Greg Wilson, who started 20th, was up to seventh. Kaeding, who was running fifth, also hit a lapped car at this point and slowed, ending up 11th for the restart. Myers motored away for the victory over Blaney and Reed. Kinser came back for fourth and McMahan ended up fifth.

“We were really good all night,” runnerup Blaney stated. “We weren’t real, real good in the feature, we just hung around all night. We just held our own.” He drove George Fisher’s red No. 2.

Reed ended up third after a mid race bobble. “For some reason in the middle of the race it got to where I couldn’t run the curb anymore, so I had about two bad laps and then gathered myself back in and got it straightened out. You can’t make any mistakes when running with these guys.”

The event was run on Sunday evening after rains washed out Friday’s originally scheduled date.

In the limited late model feature, Bellevue’s Mike Bores and Gibsonburg’s Bill Hahn swapped paint the last three laps, with Bores edging out the veteran for his first win of the season.

“Bill’s a great driver…I hated getting into him like that, but I really wanted to get this win,” said Bores beside his S&S Auto Parts sponsored #15b.

Brock Mayes scores 1st 410 sprint win; VanWormer picks up ALMS victory

By Brian Liskai: ATTICA, Ohio (Friday, April 28, 2006) – A front row starting spot was not where you wanted to be on Bazell Race Fuels Night at Attica Raceway park Friday.

Bucyrus, Ohio’s Brock Mayes started ninth in the 410 sprint feature and went on to claim an exciting victory – his first career win. Pinconning, Michigan’s Jeep VanWormer started fifth and went on to capture his first career Attica victory in the Sunoco American Late Model Series. Sandusky’s Chris Andrews started eighth and ended up in victory lane for the second time in his young career at Attica in the 305 sprints.

Also, Findlay’s Chad Kemenah dominated the remaining 17 laps of the make-up 410 feature that was rained out on April 21, to score his 19th career ARP victory. The UUI crew then loaded up and headed for Saturday’s World of Outlaws show in Knoxville, Iowa.

In the regular 410 feature, defending track champion Byron Reed jumped into the early lead from his pole starting position with Brandon Martin, Mark Keegan and Craig Mintz giving chase. The first caution would fly on lap 6 for Chad Blonde, with the running order now Reed, Keegan, Martin, Mintz, 10th starting Phil Gressman, Mike Linder, Brian Smith and Mayes.

Reed would continue to show the way with Keegan and Linder waging a great battle for second. By lap 20, Reed held the advantage over a closing Linder, Keegan and now Mayes. Disaster nearly struck Reed on lap 22 when he went off the high side of turn two. He gathered it back in, as the yellow would fly for a Niel Shepard spin. Reed had a lapped machine between he and Linder on the restart, with Keegand Mayes in tow. On the restart, Mayes used the bottom to move around Keegan exiting turn two, and then Linder in turn four to take second.

Reed got bottled up in traffic, allowing Mayes to close. Mayes rocketed off the bottom of turn four to take the lead as they received the white flag. Reed would drive to Mayes’ outside through turns three and four on the final lap, but Mayes would out drag him to the checkered.

“We have worked so hard over the past four years for this…I was beginning to think it would never come,” said Mayes beside his J&F Construction, Kinn Brothers Heating and Cooling sponsored #11B. “My crew keeps working hard and they gave me a heck of a car….it was easy to drive. I thought we guessed wrong at the start…I went to the bottom and it just kept getting better and better.”

In the make-up 410 feature, no one came close to touching Kemenah. He had taken the lead on April 21 with a great move off the bottom of turn 4 on lap 13, only to see the rains fall, putting the victory on hold until April 28.

“I have to thank John Bores for all the help he’s given us over the years. I want to thank Paul Kistler for the great motors and my family and crew for all their support,” said Kemenah beside his Underground Utilities Inc. sponsored #15K. “I really have to give credit to my brother Brian and all the guys on the crew. They have been working really hard…I’ve torn up some cars the past couple of months and they have rolled up their sleeves and didn’t give up.”

In the ALMS feature, Steve Casebolt jumped into the lead from his pole starting spot and looked to have the race in hand. The fans were watching a great battle for second between Aaron Scott, Brady Smith and VanWormer. But, as Casebolt became mired in lapped traffic, VanWormer, who had disposed of Scott and Smith, closed. As the five-to-go signal was given, VanWormer drove under Casebolt for the lead. Casebolt would not give up though, pulling along side VanWormer as they entered turns three and four for the final time. VanWormer would get the bite off the bottom and score the victory.

“We started the night with a good pill draw which is important when you have this many talented racers here. We were fast in our heat and I knew by feature time if I was patient and took my time, we’d be alright,” said VanWormer beside his Glob Technologies, Mastersbuilt sponsored #55.

In the 305 sprint main, pole sitter Andy Shammo jumped into the early lead. Scott Kraylek would take the lead five laps into the feature as he and Shammo would touch wheels briefly. Jeremy Durst would wrestle second from Shammo four laps later, with a fast closing Andrews in fourth. Shammo’s mount would suffer a broken front three laps later.

On the restart, Kraylek would continue to lead, with Durst, Andrews and Paul Weaver slicing back and forth. With 10 laps remaining, Andrews would power around Kraylek on the bottom and go on to the win.

“This is really cool. We’ve been getting better and better every week,” said Andrews beside his Spill Tek, Blue-Chip Machine sponsored #15c. “I have to thank my parents and all my sponsors for allowing me to do this.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, May 5 for Peps/Scout Night. All scouts – boys and girls – who wear their uniform to the track get free admission. Besides the normal show of 410 sprints, 305 sprints and limited late models, the 305s will run a make-up feature from the April 21 rainout.

Chad Kemenah Excited To Compete As World of Outlaws Mean 15 Racer

By Tony Veneziano, WoO Sprint Series PR Director

Attica Raceway Park is near and dear to Mean 15 racer Chad Kemenah’s heart. Not only is it right down the road from his home in Findlay, Ohio, but he also has won 18 times in a 410-winged sprint car at the 1/3-mile track. In addition, John Bores, the owner of Kemenah’s long-time sponsor Underground Utilities Inc., also is Attica’s promoter this season.

The stars and cars of the World of Outlaws will take to the high-banked clay oval on Friday, May 12th, to battle some of the toughest weekly 410-sprint car drivers in the country in an event presented by Kistler Engines.

“It’s always good when you go back home,” said Kemenah, the driver of the No. 15K U.U.I. Eagle. “It’s a plus. You have plenty of laps at the place, and the fans are excited to see us race with the Outlaws. We’re really looking forward to going back there.”

Another reason Kemenah is excited to race at Attica is that Bores is calling the shots now. It was kind of by luck the two hooked up in the late 1990s. Now, the No. 15K Chad Kemenah Racing machine is synonymous with Bores’ U.U.I.

“We’ve been together now for eight years,” Kemenah said. “It actually started out as a one-night deal. A guy named Jim Harble, who was a part of the race team for quite awhile, had a racecar and asked me to drive it one night. It was a one-night thing during Ohio Sprint Speedweek, and here we are eight years later. It’s like a dream come true.”

From a sponsor’s standpoint, Bores is excited to see Kemenah racing with the World of Outlaws, knowing how tough the competition is and that the driver is on top of his game. >From a promoter’s standpoint, he is anxiously waiting for the long-time fan favorite to compete at Attica in front of his hometown fans with the other members of the Mean 15. Bores admits the sprint cars are what keeps the fans coming back and packing the stands week in and week out.

“It’s great for us and for the local people to see a local person running at a local track with the World of Outlaws,” said Bores, a former driver turned promoter. “He’s been doing this for so long that I think he’ll just treat it as another race.”

Drivers and car owners are often known for having epic battles with promoters, and vice versa. In many cases, this comes about because neither side knows what the other is going through. Enter Bores, who not only has laps as a driver, but knows what it takes to be a sponsor in racing and a successful businessman. He is using all of his knowledge for the sport and as well as his keen business sense in his maiden voyage into promoting Attica.

“I understand what it takes to fix a car,” Bores said. “Having been out on the track, it helps as a promoter to make the racing more favorable to the drivers and the team owners. Having your own car and sponsoring a car helps you understand the financial aspect of it. As a promoter, I know what is on the other end, having been a car owner and being a sponsor.”

For Kemenah, it is the best of both worlds as he has a sponsor that knows what it takes to help the team stay on the track and keep clicking. He also has a throng of fans that will be waiting in line to buy tickets for the May 12 event to see their local favorite as he takes on drivers from across the country who will be gunning to say they won in his back yard.

“It would be great to the win the Outlaw race,” Kemenah said. “With it being John’s first year as a promoter. He’s helped me out so much. He’s given me the best equipment and the best of everything to go racing with. It would mean quite a bit to win one here for him. We really haven’t talked about the race. We just try to approach every race as a different one.”

Kemenah, who is battling for the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award Presented by Maxim Racing and ButlerBuilt, won the World of Outlaws season-opener in February at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla.

After doing battle at Attica, Kemenah and the World of Outlaws Mean 15 racers will pack up and travel south in the Buckeye State for the Ohio Challenge II at Jim Nier’s K-C Raceway in Waverly.
