Chaney Storms To Attica Win; Sebetto Takes Second 305 Victory; Coffman Scores Career First; Ward Wins On Last Lap Pass In Trucks

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) At the beginning of the year, some racing observers wondered if the team put together to field 410 sprints for Millersburg, Ohio driver Rob Chaney could get him to victory lane….wonder no more. Chaney powered to his second victory in as many weeks on Fisher Performance Night at Attica Raceway Park.

Fremont, Ohio driver Bryan Sebetto held off the determined Stuart Brubaker to record his second victory of the season in the 305 sprints.

Ashland, Ohio’s Clint Coffman took the lead with just two laps remaining and went on to score his first career feature win in the Fultz Fabrication & Speed Shop Attica Late Models.

Sandusky, Ohio’s Cory Ward waited until the last lap to drive under Steve Endicott to score his first win of the year at Attica in the dirt truck feature.

Chaney said the win in the World Auto Parts of Huron/Cleveland 410 Sprints – he also was victorious last Saturday at Fremont Speedway – adds to the confidence that is building in his young Hammer Pallets team.

“The results didn’t show early on, but these guys just kept coming to the shop and working hard.Anytime you can win – I don’t care if it pays $2,500 to win or $25,000 – when you can beat Dale Blaney, Byron Reed, John Ivy, Greg Wilson…you’ve accomplished something,” said Chaney beside his Randy and Lisa Hammer, Rob Hunter owned #24h sponsored by Berlin Natural Bakery, Emmons Towing and Tim Hawkins Logging. “Aaron (Hammer) was here tonight…he missed Saturday’s win, so that makes it even better.”

For Sebetto, the victory was redemption after getting upside down the week before.

“There wasn’t a whole lot of track left on the top and I got close to blowing it off the edge a few times. This feels a lot better after my mistake of being too aggressive last week,” said Sebetto beside his Josh Meggitt owned #01 carrying sponsorship from Frosty’s Bar and Gressman Powersports.

ImageCoffman has been racing for 16 years, and he couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw the checkered flag in front of him in the late model feature. It was his first career victory and it came in dramatic style with a pass for the lead with just two laps remaining.

“Finally,” said an exhausted Coffman beside his Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway/Coffman Corvettes sponsored #2c. “That was some awesome racing those final five or six laps…the fans should have enjoyed that.”

And like Coffman, Ward waited until the closing laps to make his winning move exiting turn two on the final lap.

Image”How did that happen?” a bewildered Ward questioned in victory lane beside his Excuses Lounge, Precision Body and Frame, Blue Chip Machine & Tool sponsored #18w. “I just drove that thing into turn one as hard as I could and it stuck and I got under Steve (Endicott) and he raced me hard down the backstretch and it was a drag race to the checkered.”

John Ivy – piloting the same car Ricky Stenhouse drove to victory at Attica last year during Ohio Sprint Speedweek – took the lead at the drop of the green for the 30-lap 410 sprint A-main, with Chaney, David Harrison and Brock Mayes in tow. Ivy would continue to lead when he hit lapped traffic on lap 13, allowing the rim-riding Chaney to close.

Cautions would plague the last 10 laps, and shortly after a restart on lap 21, Chaney drove around Ivy exiting turn 2 to grab the top spot. Ivy would pull under Chaney a couple of times in the closing laps, only to see the yellow displayed.

Meanwhile, Dale Blaney had quietly and methodically marched from his 18th starting spot into fifth by lap 23. He would vault into third on a restart a lap later and would still second on lap 26 when the final caution would fly. Blaney would drive up beside Chaney to let him know he was on the move, but it had little effect as Chaney went on to the 7th win of his career at Attica. Blaney would retain second followed by Ivy, Chad Blonde (who hung around the top six the entire race) and Harrison rounding out the top five.

Stuart Brubaker would take the lead at the drop of the green for the 25-lap 305 sprint feature, with rookie Travis Hoffbauer, Sebetto and Dustin Dinan right on his bumper. Sebetto would move into second on lap six when Hoffbauer slipped off the racetrack. Over the next four laps Brubaker,Sebetto and Dinan would wage a torrid battle for the lead before Sebetto would drive around the high side to grab the top spot on lap 11.

The last 10 laps of the feature were marred by yellows, wiping out any leads Sebetto would grab. Brubaker tried several low passes as the laps wound down, but could not get the job done Sebetto would take his 4th career Attica victory over Brubaker, Andy Shammo, Dinan and Duane Zablocki.

Ken Hahn bolted into the lead at the drop of the green for the Attica late model 20-lap feature with Curts Deisenroth hounding. At the half-way mark Hahn had his handsfull with defending track champion Larry Kingseed, Deisenroth and Ryan Missler. Deisenroth would grab the top spot on lap 14 with a move around Kingseed as Hahn began to fade. By lap 15 the running order was Deisenroth, Kingseed, Coffman, Hahn, Missler and Ernie Haynes who had hung around the top 7 all night.

Coffman would driver under Kingseed following a lap 17 caution to grab the runner-up spot and would blast under Deisenroth for the lead exiting turn 4 with just 2 laps remaining. He would go on to score his first career win over Deisenroth, Missler, Kingseed and 12th place starter John Mayes Sr. to round out the top 5.

In the dirt truck feature, Steve Endicott and Ward would battle the entire 15-laps for the lead, with Endicott hold the advantage for 14 1/4 laps. Ward would execute his winning move exiting turn 2 on the last lap for his his third career Attica victory. Endicott, Art Ball, Eric DeVana and Shawn Valenti would round out the top five.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, May 25, as the O’Reilly All Star Circuit of Champions make their second visit of the season, along with the first appearance of the Sunoco American Late Model Series on Coors Light/Fultz Fabrication & Speed Shop Night.

Reed Wins Wild One at Attica, Shammo Continues Hot Streak, Bores Roars Back in Attica Late Models, Arnold Wins Thrilling Truck Feature

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Byron Reed felt like he let a feature win get away from him last week. He wasn’t about to let it happen again Friday, out dueling Rob Chaney and Greg Wilson to win his 18th career 410 sprint feature at Attica Raceway Park on World Auto Parts of Huron & Cleveland Night.

Millbury, Ohio’s Andy Shammo continued his hot streak – he won a pair of features last Saturday at Fremont Speedway – as he grabbed the lead with just two laps remaining to claim his third career victory in the 305 sprints.

Bellevue, Ohio’s Mike Bores passed his dad halfway through the Fultz Fabrication & Speed Shop Attica Late Model’s A-main – in his dad’s back-up car – and claimed his fourth career victory.

Tiffin, Ohio’s Brian Arnold raced door to door with Steve Endicott the entire 15 laps of the dirt truck feature before scoring his third career checkered.

ImageIn the World Auto Parts of Huron/Cleveland 410 Sprint feature, Fremont’s Mike Linder grabbed the lead from his pole starting spot, but it was short-lived, as fourth-starting Rob Chaney wheeled around Linder, Brandon Martin and Byron Reed to grab the point on lap 4. Reed would narrowly avert disaster on the fourth circuit as he and Mike Linder got together in turn 3, with Reed bouncing off the inside tire barrier.

Chaney would continue to rim-ride in the lead with Reed moving into second and ninth starter Greg Wilson sling-shoting into third by lap 8. They continued in that order, while all eyes were on Castalia, Ohio’s Caleb Griffith. The B-main winner had steadily moved from his 17th starting spot to 5th by lap 12. At the half-way mark of the 30-lap feature, the running order was Chaney, Reed, Wilson, Linder and Griffith.

ImageThe action really heated up with 10 circuits remaining, as Wilson, Chaney and Reed would race three-wide for the lead down the back stretch, with Wilson barely holding the top spot at the flag stand over Reed, Chaney and now 14th starter Lee Jacobs. Reed would sweep by Wilson a lap later exiting turn 2 to take the lead. The yellow would fly on lap 24 for Wilson who exited with a flat right rear. He would come from the tail to finish 7th.

Reed would hold off Chaney the remaining six laps for the victory, with Jacobs finishing third, Griffith fourth and Linder battling back for fifth.

“I felt like I let one get away from us last week,” said Reed who lost to Brock Mayes by less than at foot on May 4. “I wasn’t going to let that happen again.”

“I changed my line a little in turn two and was able to get under Rob (Chaney),” said Reed beside his Reebar Die Casting, Weld Wheel, Pro Shock sponsored JEI chassis.

ImageIn the 305 A-Main, Green Springs, Ohio driver Kevin Lee would jump into the lead from his outside pole starting spot where moved when 2nd place starter Chad Wilson spun on the initial start. Lee couldn’t shake Matt Ferrell, as the duo raced side by side until lap 10 when the action would halt for a flip involving Bryan Sebetto and Chad Gullett (both were alright, but were done for the night). As Lee sat on the the front stretch, his right rear tire went flat, sending him to the pits for repairs.

Ferrell would inherit the lead but he now had his hands full with Dustin Dinan. Those two would race side by side until Dinan got the advantage on lap 17, bringing along 11th place starter Andy Shammo who had quietly moved through the field. Dinan would not budge from the bottom of the track, forcing Shammo to the middle. However, Dinan would slip up ever so slightly exiting turn 2 with just two laps remaining, allowing Shammo to get under him and grab the top spot.

Shammo would take the checkered over Dinan, Ferrell, Bryan Scott and Dustin Keegan.

“I’ve been around long enough to know when things are going this good you just appreciate it because it can change just like that,” said Shammo beside his Village Inn/Fort Ball Pizza Palace sponsored #48. “I have to thank Lamar and Yvone Burkin for putting me in this car and all of our great sponsors like Matt Tille Enterprises and KS Sales and Service, Roots Poultry, Adlers Transmissions, Advanced Speciality Contractor, Lotycz & Sons Floor Covering, Kate an Al’s Restaurant…without all of their help we couldn’t do this.”

ImageMike Bores wasn’t even going to race Friday night. He had nearly destroyed his regular late model in a wicked crash the week before and it wasn’t back together. But he received encouragement from friends and family and decided to take his dad up on his offer to drive his back-up car.

However, it was his dad, John Bores, who would grab the early lead in the 20-lap feature, with Jim Fleming and Larry Kingseed – who already has 2 wins this season – in tow. On lap four, Kingseed would spin to make the running order John Bores, Fleming, Mike Bores and John Mayes Sr. Mike would move around Fleming into the runner-up spot on lap six and would pressure his day for the lead. Mike would slip under John on lap 10 for the top spot.

While Mike cruised to a four car-length lead, John Bores, Fleming, Mayes, Ken Hahn and 12th-starter Ryan Missler would wage a torrid battle.

At the checkered Mike Bores took the win over John Bores, Mayes, Hahn and Missler.

“My car was tore up pretty good and Pork Chop (Brandon Smith) worked his tail off this week to try and get it ready…we just ran out of time. I wasn’t going to race, but dad and Brian Liskai talked me into getting the back-up car out and here we are. That car is fast…I might have to leave mine in the shop,” said Bores beside his Wick’s Bar, All Air Heating & Cooling sponsored late model.

ImageThe dirt truck feature had some of the best racing of the night, as Brian Arnold and Steve Endicott literally raced door to door the entire 15 laps. Arnold would lead one lap by a foot only to see Endicott take the slight advantage at the flag stand the next lap. Arnold was able to finally pull away by a truck length the last two laps for the win. Endicott, Cory Ward, 12th-starter Art Ball and Shawn Valenti would round out the top five.

“Steve raced me hard and we rubbed on each other the whole race. That was a lot of fun,” said Arnold beside his Burns Electric, Make-A-Wish, Burns Iron & Metal, Air Cooled Engines #33 truck.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, May 18, as Fisher Performances Presents Scout Night with the 410 sprints, 305 sprints, late models and dirt trucks in action. All Scouts – boys and girls – and their pack leaders who wear their uniforms get in free.
