Blaney Kicks Off UNOH Ohio Sprint Speedweek Defense With Attica Win

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Dale Blaney began the defense of his O’Reilly All Star Circuit of Champions Ohio Sprint Speedweek title by dominating the field Sunday at Attica Raceway Park to kick off the 25th Anniversary of the University of Northwest Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by RacingJunk.com.

The Fowler, Ohio driver took the lead from Brock Mayes on lap 15 and never looked back to record his 56th career All Star victory, to move him into a tie for third with Jack Hewitt on the all-time win list. It was Blaney’s second All Star win of 2007 at Attica and 9th overall 410 sprint victory at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” venue. Blaney, the 195 and 1996 All Star champion, has won the Ohio Sprint Speedweek title in 1995, 2003, 2004 and 2006.

Brock Mayes would grab the early lead in the 40-lap Aarons Sales & Service/ Pepsi feature, with Craig Mintz applying pressure.Mintz would actually slide in front of Mayes to lead lap 3 before Mayes would get back around for the top spot. Mayes and Mintz would begin to pull away somewhat as Brian Ellenberger, Blaney, Brandon Martin and Rob Chaney battled behind them.

The first of only two yellow flags would fly for a stalled Greg Wilson on lap 8 with the running orderMayes, Mintz, Blaney, Ellenberger, Martin and Chaney. Mayes and Mintz would continue to battle for the lead as Blaney rode in their tire tracks. By lap 11, that trio battled side by side, with Blaney sliding by Mintz on lap 14 and then under Mayes for the lad a lap later.

ImageBlaney would encounter lapped traffic at the halfway mark, but it didn’t slow him down. The battle behind him was heating up between Mayes, Mintz, Chaney, Martin and Ellenberger.Chaney would grab the third spot on lap 22 and would fly around the outside of Mayes on lap 29 for second and would try to hunt down Blaney. Martin would move into third on lap 32. The final caution would come out on lap 37 for Lee Jacobs. Blaney had a couple of lapped machines between himself and Chaney. With an open track ahead, Blaney would cruise to the victory. Chaney would grab second, with Attica driver Brandon Martin getting a podium finish. Rounding out the top five were Byron Reed and 11th-starter Kenny Jacobs.

“It seems I’m always finishing behind that red #2. He had that clean track and that makes all the difference. It’s a good way to start off this long week. I couldn’t be prouder to drive this race car for Randy and Lisa Hammer and Rob Hunter and this entire crew,” said Chaney beside his Hammer Pallets/Berlin Natural Bakery backed 24h.

The finish for Martin was just what the doctor ordered.

“My confidence was down a little after last night (at KC Raceway). But the guys have been working hard on this in the shop and we’ve been making steady progress every time out,” said Martin beside his R&S Diversified, Martin Excavating backed #11. “This is great to end up on the horse track at my home track in front of this huge crowd.”

ImageGibsonburg, Ohio’s Ken Hahn would lead all 20 laps to record his 3rd career feature victory in the Fultz Fabrications & Speedshop Attica Late Models. Ryan Missler, Ernie Haynes, Jim Fleming and Mike Marteney would round out the top five.

“We are definitely on a roll. We’ll take it because I know how quickly luck can change,” said Hahn beside his Bestwick-Braun Company sponsored #27.

The UNO Speedweek presented by RacingJunk.com moves to Wayne County Speedway near Orrville, Ohio Monday, then to Waynesfield Speedway near Lima Tuesday, Hilltop Speedway near Millersburg Wednesday, Fremont Speedway Thursday; Limaland Motorsports Park, Friday and wraps up at Eldora Speedway Saturday.

Ohio Sprint Speedweek Celebrates 25 Years of Great Racing

By Black Swamp Media Group: (Camargo, IL) The 25th Annual UNOH Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by RacingJunk.com is just about ready to kick into high gear in the Buckeye State. Always a week to look forward to for the past 25 years, this year proves to be no different as a $15,000 point fund is in place to be distributed amongst the Top 10 in points at the end of the week. In addition, the Speedweek promoters have offered a $50,000 bonus to any driver who can win 4 of the 7 events. Will there be a $50,000 winner in 2007?

Drivers were required to pre-register to be eligible for the Speedweek point fund and the bonus money and currently there are 48 drivers scheduled to compete for the additional money at week’s end. There is over $197,000 up for grabs just in scheduled purse money alone. In addition, HoserVille Ohio has stepped up to sponsor the All Star Dash which will pay money to the top dash finishers from the week in a special dash event at the Eldora finale. Ohio Sprint Speedweek is one of the richest weeks of racing in the United States and has attracted many of the top names of the sport from across the country and as far away as Australia.

The week kicks off (unofficially) at K-C Raceway on Saturday June 23rd for the annual “Night The Stars Come Out”. This event does not pay points toward the Speedweek point fund, but is always a good warm-up for the following 7 straight nights of racing through Ohio. The official Speedweek kickoff is on Sunday June 24th at Attica Raceway Park, then on Monday it’s on to Wayne County Speedway. From there the series moves to Waynesfield Motor Sports Park for the first time and will then travel to Hilltop Speedway on Wednesday for another first ever visit. On Thursday, it’s back to familiar Fremont Speedway and then on to Limaland Motorsports Park on Friday. Saturday’s $10,000 to win Speedweek finale will be held at the monster ½ mile Eldora Speedway. As twenty-four Ohio Sprint Speedweeks have already come and gone, fans remember the heroes who have made a lot of left turns in the state of Ohio. Kinser, Saldana, Wolfgang, Swindell, Hood, Huntley, Jacobs, Kerr, and Blaney are just a few of the names who have captured the attention of Ohio fans over the years during Ohio Speedweek. More names will be entered into the history books at the end of next week when the action concludes, signaling the mid-point of the All Star season. It is then that many teams start thinking seriously about trying to win the All Star Championship – depending where they land in the point standings at the end of the grueling week. Currently Danny Smith holds a 26 point lead over defending champion Greg Wilson and is 47 points ahead of 3rd place Brian Paulus. That can all change drastically in one week depending on luck and a lot of hard work.

Chamberlain Sweeps Attica ALMS, Sebetto Takes 3rd Straight In 305s, Ball Edges Dible In Trucks

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Duane Chamberlain was having a bad-racing month. What he needed was a shot in the arm, some confidence. He got that and more Friday at Attica Raceway Park, as the Richmond, Indiana driver won both the Sunoco American Late Model Series feature events – the make-up from the May 25 Fultz Fabrications & Speed Shop that was rained out, and the regular show on Wynn’s Automotive/ Service Drive Solutions Night.

Fremont’s Bryan Sebetto scored his third straight 305 sprint feature win at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” venue.

Tiffin’s Art Ball literally won by a bumper in the dirt truck A-Main.

Chamberlain lead both 30-lap late model features wire to wire, surviving a crash-filled A-main in the make-up feature, and an ill-handling car in the final feature. The wins were his fifth and sixth of the season and his third and fourth in the Sunoco American Late Model Series.

Image”We haven’t been very good at all this month…our luck has been horrible. We got to start up front and that was a huge difference. In the first feature, I just had to stay up against the cushion. With all those yellows (six) in the first feature, I was wondering when something would happen to the car,” said Chamberlain beside his CW Excavating sponsored #1c. “In the second one, I got into a lapped car about half-way through and must have broke something in the front, because it was a handful. My wife is seven months pregnant, so somebody must have known I needed these wins.”

Sebetto drove his Gressman Powersports #01 around the high side of Matt Lucius exiting turn 4 on lap 10 and never looked back as he sailed to his fifth win at Attica for the season.

“This thing is just so good around the high side of three and four…I could almost flat-foot it around there,” said Sebetto beside his Frosty’s Put-In-Bay Bar sponsored sprinter. “We had our fingers crossed this motor would last…we broke something in the oil pump ealier in the night. That’s just tells you how good a motor Scott Gressman builds.”

The truck feature once again was unbelieveable, as Ball and Dible raced side by side the last five laps of the feature before Ball would edge Dible at the start-finish line. It marked Ball’s third win of the season at Attica in the last four weeks of racing. He now has five victories in his career in the dirt trucks at Attica to lead all drivers.

“I didn’t know who won. I kind of got in cruise control early on and then something woke me up and told me it was time to race,” said Ball beside his Chaney Roofing, Clouse Construction, All In One Home Improvement backed truck. “I have to give Bob Dible credit….he raced me as hard as anyone has ever raced me and he did it as clean as anyone has.”

In the make-up ALMS feature, Chamberlain jumped into the early lead from his outside front row starting spot with Ryan Markham and Dusty Moore giving chase. Four yellows would stop the action in the first 10 laps, continuously giving Chamberlain a clear track. The real battle was for second between Markham, Aaron Scott, Brian Ruhlman and Ronnie Perrin Jr.

ImageAt the half-way mark of the 30-lap event, Chamberlain lead over Markham, Perrin, Ryan Missler and Tim Sabo. Perrin would get around Markham on lap 18, but would retire to the pits with mechanical woes three laps later.Casey Noonan and Jerry Bowersocks would pick up their pass in the closing six laps, but it was too little too late, as Chamberlain powered away to the win. Markham, Missler, Bowersocks and 16th-starter Keith Berner would round out the top five. However, Missler’s car would come up light at the scales and he would be scored last.

Chamberlain would again start in the outside front row for the Wynn’s Automotive/Service Drive Solution A-main and would once again use the outside groove to build a lead. And, once again, the action behind him was fantastic between Markham, Ruhlman, Eric Myers, Tyler Boggs and Rick Combs. Unlike the first feature, this one saw only two yellows, but they would fall at opportune times for Chamberlain as was getting into heavy lapped traffic.

Chamberlain would get some pressure from Ruhlman by lap 24, but once he clearned traffic he would build his lead to five car lengths. Ruhlman would finish second with Markham, Combs and Boggs rounding out the top five.

In the 305 sprint feature, Matt Lucius would utilize the bottom groove to grab the early lead over Dustin Dinan, Chris Lang, Duane Zablocki and Brad Bowman. All eyes were on 9th-starter Sebetto and 15th-starter Andy Shammo as they picked their way through traffic. Sebetto would crack the top five on lap 6, with Shammo moving into sixth place as the first yellow flew on lap 8. The running order was Lucius, Dinan, Lang, Sebetto, Bowman and Shammo. When the green came back out, Sebetto would drive to the cushion in turns 3 and 4 and move from 4th to second in one corner. He would use the same groove to power past Lucius on lap 10 and built a huge lead. Meanwhile, Shammo continued his march forward and moved into second on lap 16. By then, Sebetto’s lead was nearly half a lap as he worked his way through traffic.

At the checkered flag, it was Sebetto over Shammo, Dinan, Lucius and 17th-starter Cody Runion to round out the top five.

In the 15-lap dirt truck main, Ball would lead the first lap before Dible would drive around the high side to take the top spot a lap later. Dible would continue to lead with Ball and Steve Endicott putting on constant pressure. At times the three ran side by side battling for the lead.

As the race settled into a rhythm, Dible seemed to have it in control. But, with four laps remaining, Ball got up on the steering wheel and pulled along side Dible as the duo raced door to door the remaining laps with Ball squeaking out the narrow victory. Dible, 10th-starter Cory Ward, Shawn Valenti and 12th-starter Chuck Roelle would round out the top five.

Familiar Faces – Reed, Sebetto, Hahn, Ball – In Victory Lane At Attica Raceway Park

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Familiar faces graced victory lane at Attica Raceway Park Friday on Strawberry Hill Farm Market/Burger King Fan Appreciation Night. Byron Reed continued his hot streak, winning his second straight feature in the World Auto Parts of Huron & Cleveland 410 Sprints, as did Bryan Sebetto in the 305 sprints. Ken Hahn was awarded his second career feature in the Fultz Fabrications & Speed Shop Attica Late Models, while Art Ball continued his hot streak, claiming his second feature win in the dirt trucks.

For Reed, Friday win is the third in as many outings – he won last Friday at Attica and followed that up with a win the next night at Fremont Speedway. It marked his third win of the 2007 season at Attica and was his 20th career Attica victory, moving him into second on the all-time 410 sprint win list (Mark Keegan leads with 54).

ImageSebetto’s win was his fourth of the season at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” venue. It is his 6th career victory at Attica, moving him into a tie for 14th on the 305 sprint all-time win list.

Hahn was awarded the feature win after Larry Kingseed, who crossed the finish line first by a nose over Hahn, was disqualified for unsportsman-like conduct. It marked the second win in three weeks for the Gibsonburg, Ohio driver.

Art Ball continued his hot streak as well, winning his second feature in the dirt trucks in the last three weeks at Attica. It was also his second straight feature win as he took the checkers last Saturday at Fremont Speedway. It was Ball’s fourth career Attica victory in the dirt trucks to put him on top of the all-time win standings. Ball also sits third on Attica’s all-time feature win list in the street stocks/ limited late model standings.

“We’ve been good all season…it’s just now we’re getting a few of the breaks,” said Reed beside his Hoosier Tire/ Reebar Die Casting sponsored sprinter.

One of those breaks was Reed being able to hang on for the win after a front torsion bar stop came off late in the race.

“I had my hands full…it was bouncing around pretty good,” said the Monclova, Ohio driver. “This is the first win my dad (Sam) has gotten to see this year….happy Father’s Day!”

Fremont, Ohio’s Sebetto had his Frosty’s Bar at Put-In-Bay 305 sprinter hooked up on the high side and avoided disaster when he and Andy Shammo got together early in the race that resulted in Shammo spinning.

“I was so good around the rim in 3 and 4…I got a run off 4 and got together with Andy. I hated that…he’s a friend and I feel bad for that,” said Sebetto beside his Hotshots Painting, Sandblasting and Powdercoating sponsored #01. “Josh (Meggitt, car owner) and I are communicating so well and our set-ups are right on the money. I could flat-foot it around the high side tonight.”

For Hahn, the win was a little bittersweet.

“I had a good run on him coming down for the checkers and just ran out of room and time. But hey, we’ll take the win,” said Hahn beside his Bestwick-Braun Co./AMS Heating & Air sponsored late model.

Ball’s Pierce Engineering team put together a new truck for the veteran two weeks ago, but the old one just doesn’t want to quit winning.

“This truck is like me…we’re both old, but we just won’t give up,” said a smiling Ball beside his Magers Lumber/Smitty’s Tavern backed #01 truck.

ImageIn the 30-lap 410 sprint feature, Troy Vacarro jumped into the early lead with Bruce Robenalt and Dean Jacobs in tow. The first caution would fly on lap 5 for a Lee Jacobs spint with the running order now Vacarro, Jacobs and sixth-starting Reed. Jacobs would spin in turn 3 after the restart, putting Reed into second and 7th-starter Caleb Griffith into third.

Vacarro and Reed would battle side by side the next two laps before Reed would drive under the Castalia driver exiting turn 4 to take the lead on lap 9. Another yellow would fly on lap 10 with the running order Reed, Griffith, Mark Keetan, Vacarro, Gus Wasson and 15th-starter Paul Weaver. Action would grind to a halt 2 laps later for a Mike Hogan tumble. The running order was know Reed, Griffith, Keegan, Weaver and Vacarro.

They would remain that way until lap 19 when Andy James flipped off turn 1. Now the car on the move was 11th-starter, rookie Chris Andrews as he trailed Reed, Griffith, Keegan and Wasson. With just five laps remaining, Griffith was closing on Reed as the two touched in turn 4 while battling for the top spot. Reed would move down to the bottom to take the win over Griffith, a fast-closing Weaver, Keegan and Wasson.

Shelby’s Brad Bowman would grab the early lead in the 25-lap 305 sprint feature and had a spirited battle with Fostoria’s Scott Kraylek until a nasty flip by Duane Zablocki (he was unhurt) stopped the action on lap 6. Kraylek would execute the perfect slide job in turn 4 a lap later to grab the lead, with Shammo moving around Bowman into second on lap 10. Kraylek and Shammo would race side by side the next lap with 8th-starting Sebetto slingshoting around Bowman into third. Exiting the fourth turn the next lap, Sebetto shot around Shammo and the two touched wheels with Shammo spinning. Sebetto would driver to the outside of Kraylek on lap 12 to grab the lead. Kraylek would mount several more challenges, but fell short at the checkered flag.

Behind Sebetto – who took the point lead – was Kraylek, Coty Runion (who raced in the top five the entire feature), Brad Haudenschild and 18th-starting Dustin Dinan rounding out the top five.

ImageLast week’s feature winner Ryan Missler would grab the initial lead in the 20-lap late model feature with John Bores pressuring. Bores would take the top spot on lap 4 when Missler pulled to the infield with engine woes. Bores would build a 5 car length lead while Eric Eicholtz, Hahn, J.R. Gentry and Kingseed battled behind. At the half-way mark the running order was Bores, Hahn, Kingseed, Eicholtz and Gentry as the yellow slowed the field. On the restart, Kingseed drover under Hahn into second as Bores continued to build his lead.

The yellow would slow action again on lap 16, putting Kingseed, the five-time Attica champion right on Bores’ rear bumper. On the restart, Kingseed would make contact with Bores exiting turn 2, sending the leader spinning. Kingseed now led over Hahn, 10th-starter Mike Marteney and Mike Bores.

The yellow would fly on lap 19, setting up a one-lap shoot-out. Hahn would pull along side Kingseed exiting the final turn for the checkered, only to fall a fender short. After exiting the speedway for victory lane, Kingseed would spin his late model around several times in celebration, throwing gravel, dirt and dust into the stands. Attica officials then disqualified him for unsportsman-like behavior, awarding the victory to Hahn.

“He put the fans in danger of injury…we cannot have that,” said Attica Operations Director Rex LeJeune.

Behind Hahn would be Marteney, Mike Bores, Bill Clapp Jr. (up from 18th) and Devin Shiels to round out the top five.

ImageChuck Roelle would grab the initial lead in the 15-lap dirt truck feature, with last week’s winner Shawn Valenti pressuring his bumper, along with Steve Endicott and 7th-starter Art Ball.Ball would use a lapped machine as a pick to drive around Roelle into the lead on lap 7. Endicott and then Cory Ward would pressure the veteran Ball for the win, but he was not to be denied.

Rounding out the top five were Ward, Valenti, who came back through the pack after an early race spin, Brian Arnold and Roelle.

Attica Raceway Park has a busy weekend coming up. On Friday, June 22, the Sunoco American Late Model Series will run two features – a make-up from the May 25 rainout and a regular program on Wynn’s Automotive/Service Driver Solutions Night. The 305 sprints and dirt trucks will also be in action. Gates will open at 5 p.m. with racing slated to get underway at 8 p.m.

Then just two nights later – Sunday, June 24, Attica will kick off the University of Northwest Ohio O’Reilly All Star Circuit of Champions Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by RacingJunk.com. The Fultz Fabrication & Speed Shop Attica Late Models will also be on the racing card on Pepsi/ Aaron’s Sales & Service Night. Gates will open at 4:30 p.m. with racing action at 7:30 p.m.
