Shaffer Nabs FAST Attica Win; Weaver Takes 305 Loot; Kingseed Wins Late Model Thriller

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Tim Shaffer is ready for the outlaws. The Aliquippa, Pa. driver and defending O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions titlist used Friday night as a tune-up for the invasion of the World of Outlaw Sprints at Attica Raceway Park , taking the 410 sprint victory on CustomChrome Plating/ R&R Auto Wrecking Night.

Defending Attica track champion Paul Weaver took the lead when Brad Bowman drove off the track on lap 18, and went on to claim the richest purse of the season for the Fremont Fence 305 Sprints for the Engine Builders’ Challenge during the first ever Fremont Attica Sprint Title (FAST) Championship Series event for that division.

Castalia’s Larry Kingseed, a five-time limited late model track champion, put the problems he has experienced the past two seasons behind him and held off several challenges from Dusty Moore, UMP National point leader Rusty Schlenk and Doug Drown to record his first super late model feature win.

Shaffer passed Byron Reed on lap 6 for the lead in a caution-filled feature and used several restarts with a clean track to pull away for his 7th career Attica victory and his second this season on the fifth night for the Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title (FAST) Championship Series.

“The car was just awesome. It really was a fun race. When it’s working that great it really is fun to drive. Brian (Kemenah) and the guys did a great job. We’ve been trying a lot of different things lately to try and get back on our game and it seems like we’re getting there,” said Shaffer beside his Aaron Call/Janet Holbrook owned, Kistler Racing Engines, Kistler Racing Products backed #83.

“I can’t wait for the World of Outlaws to come here. We’re going to give it our best shot and then some. We’re really hungry for it…I can’t wait for it,” added Shaffer about the traveling professional series coming to Attica on May 21.

Paul Weaver – FAST 305 Sprints
In another caution-filled feature, it was Stuart Brubaker who led early only to see Brad Bowman drive into the lead with a slide job in turns three and four on lap 11. But disaster struck for Bowman on a lap 16 restart as he drove off the high side of turn 2 while Weaver drove around Brubaker into the lead. Weaver rim-road the remaining way to his 24th career 305 sprint victory at Ohio ’s Finest Racing” speedplant, just one away from the all-time win lead held by Mike Linder.

“I didn’t need all those cautions. It seemed like every time I got going a caution would come out. The big difference is now that there’s two tires to choose from you have to pick the right one and hope it falls your way,” said Weaver beside his Genzman Enterprises, Schiets Motorsports, M&L Excavating backed #1w.

Larry Kingseed – UMP Late Models
The 25-lap Fultz Fabrications and Speed Shop UMP Late Model feature was a dandy, with only one caution and four cars battling the last 15 laps for the win. Kingseed, who has 23 career wins in the limited lates, held off several slide jobs from Moore, Schlenk and Drown for the victory.

“It sure is good to be back on this horse track. We had a rough two seasons. We put the old car and the old team back together and we’ve been fast. I could see those guys under me, but I just held my line and hit my marks and we’re back in victory lane,” said Kingseed beside his B&R Pallet Shop, A&S Graphics, Burns Petroleum backed #21.

The 305 sprint feature rolled out first, and Brubaker grabbed the early lead over Weaver, John Ivy, Brad Haudenschild, Bobby Clark and Brad Bowman. Just as Brubaker began to pull away and hit lapped traffic, the caution flew on lap 6. On the ensuing restart, Bowman, who had moved into third using the extreme outside of the track by lap five, drove around Weaver into second and began pressuring Brubaker. The caution flew on lap 8 and before the drivers could get into battle, it would fly again on lap 10. On the restart, Bowman would execute the slide job on Brubaker in turns three and four for the lead and began to check out. Meanwhile, Brubaker had his hands full with Weaver, Ivy and Clark.

Again just as the leaders were getting set to hit lapped traffic, the caution flew on lap 16. A lap and another caution and then Bowman drove off the high side of turn 2, handing the lead to Weaver. Weaver would pull away before the final caution would fly on lap 22. Weaver stayed smooth the remaining eight laps for the victory over Clark, Brubaker,16th starting D.J. Foos and Ivy.

“I thought Brad was going to check out, but it was tricky up top,” added Weaver about the first ever Fremont Attica Sprint Title Championship Series event.

Tim Shaffer – FAST 410 Sprints
In the 30-lap 410 sprint feature, Byron Reed grabbed the early lead with Dean Jacobs, Shaffer, Bryan Sebetto and Dale Blaney racing hard for second. Shaffer would drive around Jacobs for second on lap two and closed on Reed by lap five while Jacobs, Sebetto, Blaney and Phil Gressman put on a great battle for third. Shaffer would drive under Reed for the lead on lap six exiting turn four while Jacobs, Sebetto, Blaney, Gressman and now Randy Hannagan staged an awesome race for third. The action would grind to a halt on lap 7 when Lee Jacobs smacked the front stretch wall getting upside down, right in front of the leaders.

On the restart Shaffer pulled away while Reed had his hands full with Jacobs. A lap later disaster struck for Sebetto who slid off of turn four and into the catch fence ending his great run. On the restart, Shaffer continued to lead while Jacobs slid under Reed for second with Blaney to the outside to challenge with Gressman, Craig Mintz, Hannagan and Brandon Wimmer in the mix. Just as Shaffer was about to enter lapped traffic the caution flew on lap 16. While Shaffer was in a league of his own on the restart, Jacobs, Reed, Blaney, Gressman, Mintz and Hannagan had a great race going for second on back. Two laps later Shaffer, Jacobs and Reed had pulled away, but Gressman, Mintz, Blaney and Hannagan were trading those spots every lap.

With eight laps remaining, Blaney and Gressman would touch down the front stretch sending Gressman spinning and bringing out the caution. The running order was Shaffer, Jacobs, Reed, Hannagan, Blaney, Mintz and Brock Mayes. Reed and Hannagan would drive around Jacobs on the restart, but Hannagan’s exciting run would end on lap 17 as his powerless mount coasted to a stop on the front stretch.

Again Shaffer would pull away on the restart and would power to the victory over Reed, Jacobs, Blaney and Mayes.

The fans who stayed for the late model feature witnessed a classic with Kingseed, Moore , Drown and Schlenk putting on a driving clinic. Kingseed grabbed the initial lead with Michael Stiltner II battling with Moore and Drown for second. The only caution would fly on lap four and the battle was on. Kingseed looked like he was on a string around the top side of the track while behind him all hell was breaking loose for second. Moore, who won two weeks earlier, would take second on lap 2 and drive right on the rear bumper of Kingseed while Stiltner and Drown waged a tremendous battle for third. Drown would move into the third spot on lap 7 with Schlenk taking fourth on lap 8.

Kingseed could not shake the field with Moore having his hands full now with Drown and Schlenk as the trio traded slide job after slid job in the corners. With nine laps remaining, it became a four car battle for the lead as the leaders hit lapped traffic. Kingseed would not move from his top groove while Moore took several looks under him with Schlenk and Drown at times making it three wide for second. That tremendous battle would continue to the checkers with Kingseed over Moore , Schlenk, Drown and Devin Shiels.

Attica Raceway Park will host the World of Outlaw Sprints in a big 50-lap, $10,000 to win affair on Kistler Engines Classic Night, Friday, May 21. The UMP late models are also in action. Don’t miss “The King” Steve Kinser and defending WoO champion Donny Schatz piloting Tony Stewart’s sprint cars battle the Kasey Kahne machines of Joey Saldana and Paul McMahan and the tough Attica regulars and All Stars like Shaffer, Blaney, Reed, Jacobs and more.

Gressman Wins Battle Of Slide Jobs To Take Attica FAST 410 Sprint Win; Moore In Right Place To Grab Late Model Victory; Clark Tames 305 Field

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Phil Gressman and Brock Mayes put on a slide-job clinic the last eight laps of the 410 sprint feature at Attica Raceway Park Friday night, trading the lead at every corner, drawing “oohs and aahs” from the large crowd. Gressman would ultimately prevail for his fifth career feature on Fisher Performance, Merrill Lynch Night.

Not to be outdone, the Fultz Fabrications and Speed Shop UMP Late Models waged an exciting battle, with Dusty Moore inheriting the lead when on lap 19 when Rusty Schlenk experienced mechanical woes, and then held off a hard-charging Jon Henry for his first career super late model victory at “Ohio’s Finest” speedplant.

Bobby Clark held off several restart challenges from Paul Weaver to earn his second Fremont Fence 305 Sprint feature victory of 2010.

“That’s what you people spend your hard-earned dollars to see…a race like that,” said Gressman beside his Genzman Enterprises, Level Performance backed #53. “I kept searching around for a place on the track and every time I did someone was there to slide up in front of me. That was as an exciting, fun race as I’ve battled in for a long time. I have to thank Dee and Marilyn Genzman for everything they’ve done for me and my crew, Bill and Jamie and my dad…they have worked their tails off. I told them we have passed a lot of cars this year and if we ever get to start up front we’ll have something for them.”

“We have dug ourselves a hole on this FAST (Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title) deal with some mechanical problems last week. And I can tell you the rest of these guys won’t lie down… this is some of the toughest competition you’ll find week in and week out. So we’ll have to keep working hard if we’re going to challenge for that championship,” added Gressman.

Phil Gressman – FAST 410 Sprints
Gressman would grab the early lead of the 30-lap 410 sprint feature from his outside front row starting spot. But on lap five fifth starter Craig Mintz had moved into second and raced under Gressman to challenge for the lead. Gressman and Mintz would exchange slide jobs over the next six laps with Mintz gaining the upper hand with a move in turns three and four on lap 11. Gressman would return the favor in turns one and two and Mintz would follow suit in three and four over the next couple of laps. Gressman would regain the lead with a slide job of his own exiting turn four on lap 15, but Mintz wouldn’t give up and would continuously drive under Gressman.

Disaster struck for Mintz coming down to complete lap 21 when he smacked the outside concrete exiting turn four. He kept rolling, but Jody Keegan went up against the wall to bring out the yellow. Mintz would retire to the pits with a broken race car. On the restart, Brock Mayes, who had been in a tremendous battle for third with 12th starter Dean Jacobs and 9th starter Byron Reed, would get his elbows up and execute the slide job in turns one and two to take the top spot on lap 23. Gressman kept his composure and returned the favor the next lap and the excitement was boiling over in the stands. Mayes would again drive under and slide up in front of Gressman to lead laps 26 and 27. With three laps to go, Reed made it a three-car battle for the lead with the trio nearly hitting the front stretch wall exiting turn four. Gressman would slide in front of Mayes on lap 28 and would stay up top to take his fifth career victory at ARP. Reed would get by Mayes on the last lap with Mark Keegan and Bryan Sebetto rounding out the top five.

Image
Dusty Moore – UMP Late Models
To start the 25-lap late model feature, first it was Wayne Maffett Jr., Moore and Rusty Schlenk, who came into the night the national UMP point leader, battling for the lead. Then it was Maffett and Schlenk who raced side-by-side from laps 4 through eight as a handful of cautions slowed the excitement. On a lap 9 restart Moore would execute the slider to take the lead and began to pull away, while Maffett, Moore, Henry, Rick DeLong, Ernie Hayes, Ryan Markham and Ryan Missler waged a torrid battle behind. After a caution for Missler who slid off the banking in turns 3 and 4 on lap 13. Maffett began to once again pressure Schlenk for the lead. But, with 9 laps to go, Maffett would pull into the infield with mechanical woes, moving Moore into second and Henry up to third. Schlenk was then on cruise control, but he too would slow with problems on lap 19, handing the lead to Moore.

Moore was not out of the woods yet, as Henry would drive to his inside as the two raced side-by-side over the final five laps. As the pair exited turn four for the checkers, Henry would drive off the bottom right beside Moore . Moore would get the win by a nose over Henry with DeLong, Ken Hahn and Haynes rounding out the top five.

“Don’t every let anyone tell you luck doesn’t mean anything. I mean I was cruising there in third and was content to go home with that. Then all of a sudden I’m getting covered with oil from Maffett and Schlenk. Hey, you have to be there to take advantage of that. Then I saw Henry on the bottom and I wasn’t going to let him get me,” said Moore beside his WD 40, Markey Ambulance Rental, Dominator Race Products, Warpaint Graphics backed #WD40.

Image
Bobby Clark – 305 Sprints
Nate Dussel would grab the early lead in the 305 sprint main with Dustin Stroup, Clark and Weaver in tow. On lap two Clark and Weaver would drive around Stroup, with D.J. Foos entering the fray on lap three. Dussel and Clark would race side-by-side over the next two laps with Clark executing the slide job for the lead exiting turn 4 on lap 6. Weaver would do the same to take second a lap later, bringing Foos up to third.

Following a couple of cautions, Weaver would attempt the slide job on Clark on the restart, but Clark was too strong up top and continued to lead. Just as the leaders were getting ready to hit heavy lapped traffic on lap 14, the caution would fly. Clark would again hold of Weaver on the restart with Foos having his hands full with Zack Kramer, Steve Rando and 15th place starter Matt Merrill. With a clear track ahead, Clark would drive away for his 13th career 305 sprint victory with Weaver second, followed by Rando, Kramer and Foos.

“The car wasn’t as good as I like it here. The trick was to get to the top and keep it there. I have to thank my owner Al Davis and all my crew…they worked their tails off tonight to make the car better,” said Clark beside his Fremont Fence, Crown Battery, Jenny’s Copper Penny, Erlin Trader, B&L Plumbing backed #40.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, May 7 for the 305 Engine Builder’s Challenge on R&R Auto Wrecking Night. The UMP late models and dirt trucks will be in action. For more information log onto www.atticaracewaypark.com
