Henry survives late race contact for 2nd straight Attica 410 win; Shiels goes back to back in late models; Miller dominates 305s

ATTICA, Ohio – Cap Henry survived a late race tangle while battling for the lead in the 410 feature Friday, July 28 at Attica Raceway Park and drove to his second straight feature win on Ohio Truck Sales/Adkins Group presented by Integrity Truck and Auto Sales Night.

Henry and Cale Thomas battled for the lead throughout the 30-lap feature for the Callie’s Performance Products 410 Sprints. With five laps to go, Henry and Thomas made contact while racing in lapped traffic with Thomas flipping. Henry survived to claim his third Attica win of 2023 and his seventh overall feature victory of the year. It is his 15th career 410 win at Attica, placing him in a tie with Todd Kane for eighth on the all-time win list.

“To be honest I really don’t know if it was my fault or not. I was kind of starting to move there because I saw Cale and I had been on the top long enough…I knew I needed to start moving. I tried to slide myself there and I was so tight on the curb I slowed way down…I don’t know if I tried to come back down to regain my momentum or if he came up. I feel bad…I never want to see anyone’s car tore up. I respect Cale…I’m disappointed in that deal,” said Henry beside his Jeff Ward Demolitions, Elliott’s Custom Trailers and Carts, Premier Planning Services, Tony Elliott Foundation, Primal Tee Shop; SCS Gear Box, Napa of Fremont backed #33W.

The win pads Henry’s lead in the All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads/Kistler Racing Products Attica Fremont Championship Series presented by the Baumann Auto Group. Behind the 2020 Attica and AFCS champion at the checkers were Byron Reed, Trey Jacobs, Travis Philo and TJ Michael.

Britton, Michigan’s Devin Shiels is coming on strong in the Dirt Nerds Podcast powered by Propane UMP Late Models. The four time and defending Attica champion held off a late race challenge from Mike Bores to earn his second straight feature win. It’s the third of the season for the current Attica point leader and 18th of his career at the track. Bores, Rusty Schlenk, Matt Irey and Ryan Markham rounded out the top five.

“I seen something black…didn’t know who it was. I could see him down below and I knew I was going to struggle with those lapped cars a little bit. I think I over-heated the right rear tire a little bit. I kind of went out pretty fast and that side was a little aggressive on it. We were in a little drought there for a little while but I think we have the ship righted,” said Shiels beside his Magic Fountain Auto Wash, Rally’s Hamburgers, Dundee Products, Banshee Graphics, Salenbein Trucking & Excavating, Dirt Nerds Podcast, Banshee Graphics backed #51.

The Fremont Fence 305 Sprint feature featured a tremendous three car battle early with Bryan Sebetto leading laps 1-7, Kasey Ziebold taking the top spot from laps 8-12 with Jamie Miller taking over in lapped traffic on lap 13. Miller pulled away, lapping up to 10th place and winning by nearly six seconds for his third victory of the year at Attica. It is his 38th career 305 win at the track and extends his lead in the NAPA of Bryan Attica Fremont Championship Series presented by Jason Dietsch Trailer Sales. The win also increases Miller’s lead in the Attica points as he looks to add his fourth track title to his resume.

“I knew the car must have been good by the crew’s reaction at the scales. I want to thank all the guys who work all week in the shop on this….they don’t get a lot of recognition but they do a fantastic job. Cap Henry takes AFCS point lead with 2nd 410 Attica win; Shiels gets late race late model win; Weaver holds on for 305 victory

ATTICA, Ohio – Cap Henry is a quick learner. The Republic, Ohio driver got two attempts at a restart and utilized a different strategy on the second one to take the lead in the 410 sprint feature Friday, June 21 at Attica Raceway Park and held off a late race challenge to score his second win of the year on Etna Supply/Hanson Aggregates Night.

The victory also propelled Attica’s 2020 champion into the point lead for the All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads/Kistler Racing Products Attica Fremont Championship Series, a title he also won in 2020.

Hunter Schuerenberg led the first 11 laps of the Callie’s Performance Products 410 Sprint feature with Henry giving chase. A caution gave Henry a shot but Schuerenberg maintained the lead. A red came out for a Travis Philo Trey Jacobs tangle before a complete lap could be scored. This time on the restart, Henry switched up and went to the bottom and drove into the lead.

Henry, aboard the Jeff Ward Demolition, Elliott’s Custom Trailers and Carts, Premier Planning Services, Tony Elliott Foundation, Primal Tee Shop, SCS Gear Box, Napa of Fremont backed machine, started to pull away from Schuerenberg who lost second to Chris Andrews with just five laps to go. Racing in lapped traffic, Andrews quickly closed and with two laps to go dove under Henry. Henry rocked off the cushion of turn four and drove to his 14th career 410 win at Attica. It is his sixth overall victory of 2023 for Jeff Ward Motorsports.

“I got lucky there…we got a couple of practice tries at it to figure out what we had to do. First slider for the first start I was a little bit cleaner and left more room and it took him a little while to get there and I was like ‘we’re pretty good.’ He switched it up there on the other restart and took the top and I knew the bottom was better. I knew as long as we were leading it off of four we’d be alright. From there it was pacing it through traffic. I thought I was doing pretty good. With a few laps to go I looked to the left and saw Chris’ nose wing I was like we need to pick the pace up a little bit and start getting with it,” said Henry. “We’re going to keep enjoying this because you never know when it will end. It’s just a lot of fun right now.”

In a barn-burner 25 lap Dirt Nerds Podcast Powered by Propane UMP Late Model feature, Devin Shiels, four time and defending Attica champion led the first four laps before Casey Noonan took over. The duo raced side by side over the next eight laps before Noonan was able to pull away slightly.

With five laps to go Shiels mounted a comeback and raced under Noonan for the lead with just three laps to go as the two sliced through traffic. Shiels drove to his second victory of the season and the 17th of his career at Attica.

“We got into some lapped traffic and I tried getting underneath them and shoving them up into his lane because he liked that middle groove. If you hit it right on the bottom you could shoot off the corner pretty good…I missed it a few times. We think we’ve figured some stuff out…it’s been awhile since we’ve been over here,” said Shiels beside his Magic Fountain Auto Wash, Rally’s Hamburgers, Dundee Products, Banshee Graphics, Salenbein Trucking & Excavating, Dirt Nerds Podcast; Banshee Graphic backed #51.

The 25 lap Fremont Fence 305 Sprint feature was marred by several early cautions. Fremont’s Paul Weaver, a six time and defending Attica champion, who has struggled uncharacteristically at the track this season, led early. Once the race got going, former champion Jamie Miller began to challenge for the lead. As the duo raced into heavy lapped traffic Bryan Sebetto also moved in to challenge.

A caution with just eight laps to go gave Weaver a clear track and he drove to his first win of the year at Attica. It is his 69th career win in the division and coupled with his three 410 sprint victories, he leads all drivers in total wins with 72 at the track.

“I’ve had some weird stuff happen here this year…not engine problems but something that made the motor not run right the first couple of nights. Then get caught up and spiking the brakes to miss hitting someone and spinning out…I thought what’s going to go wrong now with all those yellows. They should be at the end of the race so I can get a breather. I have to thank Bob Hampshire. This motor ran on the top wide open and never missed and ran perfect,” said Weaver beside his Steve Brown’s B&B Drain Service, M&L Excavating, Hampshire Racing Engines backed machine.

Jamie Miller’s second place finish keeps him atop the NAPA of Bryan Attica Fremont Championship Series presented by Jason Dietsch Trailer Sales.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, July 28 on Ohio Truck Sales/The Adkins Group Night with the AFCS 410 sprint battling for $4,000 to win. The UMP late models and AFCS 305 Sprints ($1,200 to win presented by Griff’s Engines) will also be in action.
