Jacobs continues hot ways, wins Attica Nationals; Shammo, Hall also take checkereds

By Brian Liskai: Attica, Ohio (Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006) – Lee Jacobs continued to be one of the hottest 410 sprint car drivers in Ohio, as he dominated the second night of the 2nd Annual Attica Summer Nationals Saturday at Attica Raceway Park.

Ludlow Falls, Ohio driver Luke Hall scored his first career sprint car victory by taking the 25-lap NRA 360 Sprint Invaders feature.

Andy Shammo rounded out the Kear’s Speedshop Open-Wheel Onslaught Night by claiming his second career Attica victory in the 305 sprint feature.

Jacobs, the son of legendary driver Kenny Jacobs, came into the weekend after winning the last two straight features at Fremont Speedway. He looked to continue that Friday, but an early race tangle put him on the tail from which he charged back from the tail to finish 6th. Saturday night, the Holmesville, Ohio driver was not to be denied as he led all 30 laps for the
victory.

“We have been so close all year to winning one here…it’s feels do good to finally reward this team with a victory at Attica,” said Jacobs beside his Burmeister #16. “This is a two and half year-old car. We’ve talked about getting a new one, but this thing handles so well. I’d rather we put it in a corner and if a new one doesn’t respond we can dig this one back out….we
know it’s a winner.”

Hall seemed in shock at the prosect of his first sprint car victory.

“I’m really in shock….I never thought we’d get a win this early in my career. This 360 deal is so tough, but we’ve been getting faster and faster every week. I have to thank Aestric Finishers and all my crew…they kept believing in me and here we are,” said Hall.

Shammo has run in the top five consistently all season in the tough 305 sprint division, but a win kept slipping through his grasps. Not Satuday, as he out-dueled cousins Ssott and Bill Kraylek for his second career Attica victory.

“We got to start up front and that’s huge in this tough division. We’ve made some changes to the car the last couple of weeks and it’s responding,” said Shammo beside his K-S Sales and Service, Fort Ball Pizza sponsored #48s.

In the 410 sprint main, Jacobs jumped into the early lead from his pole starting spot, with Keith Baxter, Caleb Griffith, Rodney Duncan and Kyle Cummins in tow. The only caution would fly on lap eight, wiping out a half-track lead for Jacobs. On the restart, the battle heated up for second between Baxter and Griffith, with the later gaining the advantage on lap 10. Current point leader Byron Reed had moved from his eighth starting spot to fourth by lap 11.

While Jacobs checked out the crowd kept a close eye on the runner-up spot, with Griffith, Baxter, Reed and 12th starting John Ivy staging a wicked battle. At the half-way mark, Jacobs would lead over Griffith, Ivy, Reed and Baxter. While Baxter would begin to fade, Ivy would move into the runner-up spot on lap 16 with Griffith and Reed in tow.

Jacobs would cruise to the win over a closing Ivy, Reed, Griffith and 11th starting Craig Mintz rounding out the top 5.
n the NRA 360 Sprint Invaders 25-lap feature, Lima’s Dennis Yoakam would assume the early lead, with Jeff Williams, Hall and Mike Dussell in tow. On lap 8, Williams would take the top spot from Yoakam with Hall and Williams in tow. Hall would utilized the high side to gravethe lead on lap 11, will Williams, Yoakam, Greg Wilson and Dussell following. Hall would grab the top spot a lap later and would build a sizeable lead until lapped traffic allowed Rob Chaney to close.

However, Hall would take the checkered with Chaney, Wilson, Williams and Dussell rounding out the top 5.

Bill Kraylek would grab the early lead in the 305 sprint feature, with Shammo, Scott Kraylek and Mark Whaley in tow. By lap 8, the battle between Bill and Scott Kraylek and Shammo heated up, with Shammo taking the lead on lap 11.Will Kraylek would continue to run second and hounded Shammo until lap 23 when Scott Kraylek would get around and put pressure on Shammo the last two laps.

At the checkered, Shammo would help his batle for the 2006 track title with Scott Kraylek, 14th starting Dustin Dinan, Bill Kraylek and Whaley rounding out the top five.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Saturday, Aug. 26, with Baumann Auto Group Presents Fan Appreciation Night. Admission into the grandstands will be only $10, with hot dogs $1 each and popcorn 50 cents.

Gressman, Andrews, VanWormer open Attica Summer Nationals with wins

By Brian Liskai: Attica, Ohio (Friday, Aug. 18, 2006) – Phil Gressman knew his race team was beginning to gell…it was just a matter of time before he would end up in victory lane. It all came together for the Helena, Ohio driver Friday, Aug. 18, at Attica Raceway Park, as he took the checkered flag in the 410 sprint feature.

Picconing, Michigan’s Jeep VanWormer dominated all 25 laps to claim his second American Late Model Series win of the year at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” venue.

Sandusky Perkins graduate Chris Andrews took a step closer to claiming the Attica Raceway Park championship in the 305 sprints, as he scored the 305 sprint feature win on Quality Welding Night.

For Gressman, his fourth career 410 sprint win at Attica was one for the “underdogs.”

“We don’t have a lot of funds…these guys put everything they have into this race car. They work hard in the shop all week and it finally paid off. I can’t thank Nolan and Cheryl Renfro enough…they keep this thing on the track,” said Gressman beside his Clyde Drive Thru/Gressman Powersports sponsored #1R. “We’ve been getting close the last couple of months. Then we wrecked the car at Fremont a couple of weeks ago and everybody scraped their money together to buy this car and Scott Gressman put our motor back together and here we are.”

VanWormer couldn’t believe his Globe Technologies/MastersBuilt late model was so dominate.

“We committed to the bottom and I was just waiting for Rusty (Schlenk) and some of those other guys to go driving around me at the top,” said VanWormer. “We have some big races coming up and this gives us a little shot of confidence.”

For Andrews, starting up front was the key to his third win of the season.

“It helps to start towards the front when you have competition like we have in this division. We’re taking this championship deal one race at a time, but as long as the car handles like it did tonight, we shouldn’t have any problems,” said Andrews beside his Goofy Golf/Mathews Ford sponsored #15c.”I want to dedicate this win to the Rebman family….Joe was a great guy and he’ll be missed at the Gressman Powersports shop.”

At the drop of the green for the 30-lap 410 sprint feature, Attica’s Brandon Martin grabbed the lead from his outside front row starting spot, with Brock Mayes, Gressman and Bryan Scott in tow. Gressman would take second on lap eight and would battle with Martin for the top spot a lap later. A slide-job in turns three and four would give Gressman the lead on lap 10. Following a caution, Gressman would set sail around the bottom of the track, with Martin, Mayes and Scott following.

All eyes were now on All Star Circuit of Champions rookie of the year candidate Chad Blonde, who had moved into fifth from his 12th starting spot by lap 11. Blonde would grab fourth by lap 14, bringing John Ivy into the top five as well.

A yellow for the spinning cars of Jamie Martin and David Harrison would bunch the field up on lap 17 with the running order Gressman, Mayes, Blonde and Martin. Now the cars to watch were 15th starting Mark Keegan and Lee Jacobs who had gone to the tail following an early race altercation. By lap 22, Gressman continued to lead with Mayes in second, Blonde, Keegan and Martin.

Gressman would cruise to the win, with Mayes, Blonde, Keegan and Martin rounding out the top five.

In the 25-lap ALMS feature, VanWormer would jump into the lead from his pole-starting position and would never be challenged. Rusty Schlenk would run second the entire race, with the real action taking place from third through 10th.

At the checkered, VanWormer would take the win followed by Schlenk, eighth starting Duane Chamberlain, Doug Drown and current ALMS point leader Brian Ruhlman rounding out the top five.

In the 25-lap 305 sprint feature, Andrews would grab the lead from Chris Lang on lap two and would survive one yellow and several close calls with lapped machines and the high side of turn two to take the victory. The action for second through sixth was exciting between Andy Shammo, Jim Dunham, Matt Ferrell and Dustin Dinan.

At the checkered, Andrews took the victory followed by Shammo, Dunham, 11th starting Duane Zablocki and Ferrell.

Night #2 of the Second Annual Attica Summer Nationals will feature the Kear’s Speedshop Openwheel Onslaught on Saturday, Aug. 19. The all-sprint-car affair features the 410 sprints, NRA 360 Sprint Invaders and the 305 sprints. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. with racing slated to get underway at 7:30 p.m.

Kelly Kinser dominates Attica sprints

By Brian Liskai: Attica, Ohio (Friday, Aug. 4, 2006) – Kelly Kinser made the right adjustments to his sprint car as he dominated the 410 feature at Attica Raceway Park on Burns Electric Night Presents Family Fun Night.

Scott Kraylek waited to show his hand until the last lap as he took the lead from Kevin Lee and went on to take the big payout in the 305 sprints,claiming the $1,500 top prize in the 305 Engine Builders Challenge. It was Kraylek’s second win in as many weeks at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” venue.

Defending and four-time Attica track champion Larry Kingseed doubled up in the limited late models, winning the make-up feature from July 21 and then the regular night’s feature event. It marked Kingseed’s fourth and fifth feature wins of the season at ARP.

Bellevue’s Cory Ward led all 15 laps of the dirt truck main to claim his first career feature win.

“I had forgotten they run a Goodyear spec tire here on their weekly shows…I thought I might be in trouble,” said Kinser beside his Crone Lumber/Kinser Timber sponsored #4k. “We just keep adjusting on her all night and she responded.”

“I cried and cried to my engine builder (O’Flaherty Engines) this past week. We just didn’t have the horsepower some of these other guys had…my engine was tired. He freshened it up for me this week and it made a world of difference,” said Kraylek beside his Lincoln Mortgage Beckensun Trucking sponsored #21. “I made up my mind on that last restart I was going up top, but I didn’t want to show my hand too soon…but when I saw the white I knew I had to get up there and run’er wide open.”

“We put a freshened this old cast-ironed Smith Automotive engine last night and it paid off,” said Kingseed beside his Strawberry Hill/John M. Allen Company sponsored #21. “I have to thank my wife and kids for all they sacrifice so I can do this and my crew for working so hard.”

“This is awesome…to finally get a win in this tough division. I have to thank my dad (Jim)….he started racing this truck while I was in the other one and when I had trouble, he stepped out and let me in his truck and here we are,” said Ward on his first career victory beside his Budweiser/Excuses Lounge sponsored #18w.

In the 410 sprint 30-lap main, it was pole-sitter Craig Mintz who jumped into the lead, with outside front row starter Kinser tucking right in on his bumper. Kinser would utilize his familiar bottom groove to drive under Mintz and into the lead a circuit later, with Todd Kane and Mike Linder in tow. Kane would move around Mintz into the runner-up slot on lap five, but Mintz would return the favor five laps later.

At the halfway mark, Bloomington, Indiana’s Kinser had checked out, but the action for second through sixth was exciting, as Mintz, Linder, Kane, Bryan Scott, Phil Gressman and Lee Jacobs swapping those positions at nearly every lap.

Kinser would score his fifth career ARP victory in the non-stop event, with Mintz settling for second, Linder third, and Scott and Jacobs rounding out the top five.

In the 305 Engine Builders’ Challenge (O’Flaherty Engines, Hampshire Engines, Gressman Powersports, Griff’s Engines and Levell Performance), Tiffin’s Coty Runion jumped into the early lead and looked strong through the early going, with Mark Whaley, Mark Pridemore and Kevin Lee in tow. The first caution would fly on lap 12 with the running order Runion, Lee, Kraylek (up from sixth starting spot), Whaley, Brad Bowman, Dustin Keegan, Andy Shammo and Paul Weaver. On the restart, Runion could not shake Lee, who executed the perfect slide job in turn four to take the top spot on lap 15.

The caution would fly again on lap 16 with the running order Lee, Runion, Kraylek, Shammo and Weaver. When the green flew again, Weaver went to the high side to move into fourth and was challenging for third when he spun in turn four on lap 18. Lee would continue to lead, with Kraylek moving into second, followed by Runion, Shammo and Bryan Sebetto.

The running order would remain that way until the white flag flew. Kraylek would move to the rim of the track and drive around Lee to take the lead and the win, the 9th of his career at ARP, moving him into a tie for ninth on the 305 all-time win list. Behind Kraylek would be Lee, Shammo, Runion and Sebetto.

In the make-up limited late model feature, it became a survival of the fittest, as only 9 of the starting 20 finished the 20 laps which took 50 minutes to get in due to several crashes.

Bellevue’s Ryan Missler would jump into the early lead as Bill Hahn and Kingseed battled for second. Kingseed would dispose of Hahn by lap 7 and drive under Missler on lap 9 for the lead.

Kingseed would survive a couple of yellows and two reds to pick up the win, with Mike Bores, Missler, Jeff McCoy (up from 19th in Mike Marteneny’s #45) and Hahn rounding out the top five.

In the regular portion of the program, Bores would lead the first lap with Hahn, Kingseed and Tim Sabo battling behind his rear bumper. Kingseed would move around Hahn on the second lap and drive under Bores for the lead on lap three. He would survive two yellows to claim the win, his 21st career victory at ARP.

Behind Kingseed at the checkered were John Mayes Sr., Missler, Hahn and Sabo.

Pole-sitter Ward would jump into the lead of the dirt truck 15-lap feature, but he couldn’t shake Paul Dymond or last week’s winner Art Ball who hounded him until lap 12 when Dymond would spin. Ward would hold off several challenges from Ball over the last three laps for the win. Brian Arnold, Bob Dible and Ron Kepling would round out the top five.

Attica Raceway Park will be off Aug. 11 for the Attica Independent Fair. Racing will resume with the Second Annual Attica Summer Nationals on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 18 and 19. Friday’s show will feature the 410 winged sprints, 305 sprints and American Late Model Series. Saturday will be an all open-wheel affair as Kear’s Speedshop Presents the Open-Wheel Onslaught featuring the 410 sprints, NRA 360 sprints and 305 sprints.
