Jacobs Scores Last Lap, Last Turn Pass for Attica Win; Clark Takes 305 Victory; Missler Grabs Late Model Loot; Ward Takes Truck Main

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) They say lapped traffic can really hurt the leader of a race. However, it was THE LACK of lapped traffic that may have cost Mike Linder. He led for 29 and 7/8 laps at Attica Raceway Park Friday night. But it was Lee Jacobs who led the most important 1/8 of a lap…the last bit of straight-away to claim the 410 sprint feature on Burns Electric Mid-Season Championship Night.

Attica rules put lapped cars to the tail on yellow flags, so that the leaders can battle for the top spot, thus giving fans a thrilling show. And thrilling it was.

Linder had built up a substantial lead, but late race cautions would take away the advantage he had of having lapped machines between himself and his closest competitors.

Following a restart with three laps remaining, Jacobs drove to the high side to power around Paul McMahan and Linder in the final two turns and won the drag race to the checkered flag.

“I knew we had the car to beat on that yellow with seven laps to go. Then I screwed up on the restart and drove off the race track down thback stretch and lost a couple of positions,” said Jacobs beside his Stephen P. Mapus Productive Tool & Equipment sponsored, Burmeister owned #16.

Jacobs ran behind Linder, McMahan, Byron Reed and Caleb Griffith until the yellow fly on the 27th circuit for a Chris Andrews’ spin. On the restart, while Linder and McMahan went to the bottom of the track, Jacobs set sail up top, driving around Griffith and Reed into the third spot. As Linder was fighting to hold off McMahan, Jacobs drove hard into the cushion on the final two turns and flew up beside Linder and beat him the last 10 yards to the flags.

“When that yellow came out at the end, I knew if Mike and Paul went to the bottom I had a shot. I just concentrated and hit my marks and the car was awesome. Hats off to John Bores and his track prep crew…they have given us a racy track every week,” said Jacobs of his second career Attica victory.

Behind Jacobs at the finish was Linder, McMahan, Chad Blonde and Greg Wilson to round out the top five.

With severe weather hitting all around the race track, the program was put on the fast track. All track side victory lane interviews were cancelled.

When pole-sitter Cap Henry developed steering problems on the opening lap, it was outside front-row starter Bobby Clark who took the advantage. The Fremont driver led all 25 laps in his Fremont Fence, Al Davis Carpeting #40 to record his second victory of the season at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” speedplant. Stuart Brubaker would drive from his ninth starting spot to finish second with Brad Haudenschild, Todd Heuerman and Dan Hammond rounding out the top five.

It was Clark’s fifth career 305 sprint victory at the track.

In the Service Drive Solutions UMP Attica Late Models, Bellevue’s Ryan Missler would work his way up from his 12th starting spot to grab the lead on the 13th lap and held off a hard charge from Mike Marteney to claim his second win of the season at Attica and his eighth career victory. Missler’s eighth career ARP victory came aboard his Missler Industries, Hawk’s Auto Reconditioning, Taze DJ & Karaoke backed late model.

Rounding out the top five were Marteney, Jamie Reed, Nate Potts and Curtis Deisenroth.

The 15-lap dirt truck main was a barn-burner, with Art Ball, Brian Arnold and Cory Ward battling side by side throughout the race. Ward took the lead for good on lap 10 and would hold off Ball, Arnold, Bob Dible and Dan Henning for his second win of the year and seventh career victory at Attica.

Ward’s victory came aboard the TJ Hosang Construction, Excuses Lounge, Precision Body and Frame backed truck.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, June 13 for Quality Welding Night with the 410 sprints, 305 sprints, late models and dirt trucks in action.

SCHATZ SIZZLES AT ATTICA FOR ADVANCE AUTO PARTS WORLD OF OUTLAWS WIN

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Donny Schatz has been so close to the victory lane so many times this year, only to come up just short. The Fargo, N.D. driver drove around Nashville, Tenn.hot shoe Paul McMahon on lap 11 and went on to take the 40-lap Kistler Engines Classic at Attica Raceway Park Friday night, May 30. It was the second Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws victory of 2008 for the two-time and defending series champion.

“I love racing on a wide, slick track like this…it’s racey and you can make passes,” said the driver of the Tony Stewart Motorsports Armorall sponsored #15. “The crew has been working extremely hard…all we need is to get some racing in…it seems if you need rain all you have to do is schedule a World of Outlaws race. We got the breaks we needed tonight.”

Schatz not only had 25 other drivers chasing him on Friday night, but he also had Mother Nature knocking at his door, as she tried her best to derail the racing.

“It was a good night for us,” said Schatz. “We keep working hard to get that feel I like back and each day we keep making big strides. I think we have our hand on what it is, and I am very excited about that.”

The race began with a light mist, which intensified throughout the event, though with 24 cars running all over the surface on the high-banked 1/3-mile, there was not much room for the rain to actually hit the track. The checkered flag flew just around 9:30 p.m. as officials did everything they could to make sure the capacity crowd was able see the full 40 lap event.

“You could see it a little, but it wasn’t coming down real bad,” Schatz said of the rain late in the event. “My car was stuck so good through the middle and the top that it didn’t really affect me. I know there are some people that probably would have wished it would have rained halfway through while they were leading, but not me. Every lap I do, I get better and I need every lap I can get. I’m glad to run all 40 laps and get away with a victory.”

McMahon, piloting the Rick and Kathy Ferkel owned, Shorty’s Recycling backed #0 bolted into the early lead with Wooster, Ohio’s Jac Haudenschild in the City Insulation R19, Schatz and Steve Kinser in the Q Power Motoroils #11 racing hard for second. Schatz would dispose of Haudenschild for the second apot on lap five and would quickly begin moving in on McMahon. He drove around the outside for the lead exiting turn four on lap 11 and was into lapped traffic a lap later.

ImageMeanwhile, the huge crowd was treated to great action for the third spot between Haudenschild, Findlay’s Chad Kemenah in the Kantor Oil sprinter, Joey Saldana in the Kasey Kahne Racing, Budweiser #9 and Kinser. Shane Stewart in the Roth Motorsports sprinter would enter that fight by lap 14. The action would slow for a caution on lap 17, with the running order Schatz, McMahon, Haudenschild, Saldana and Kemenah. Kemenah would get a great restart and pass both Saldana and Haudenscild for the third spot. At the halfway mark, Schatz had built a comfortable lead over McMahon, Kemenah and a good battle for fourth spot between Haudenschild, Saldana and Kinser.

While Schatz pulled away, Kemenah, McMahon, Saldana, Haudenschild and Kinser would wage a great batle for the second spot, with Kemenah holding the advantage from laps 21-27. Saldana, last year’s World of Outlaws victor at Attica, would move into third on lap 22 and began to put pressure on Kemenah for the runner-up spot.

Schatz would hit lapped traffic again on lap 26 before the yellow would fly, giving him a clear track once again. Saldana would drive around Kemenah into second on lap 28, just before the caution would fly for Kinser, who went pitside with rear end woes.The cars on the move were Tim Shaffer in the Casey’s General Store backed #6, and Byron Reed in the Reebar Diecasting #5, moving from 25th and 24th starting spots respectively. Shaffer was up to 10th by lap 29, while Reed was 12th.

Again on the restart, Schatz drove away with Saldana, and now a closing Stewart and Kemenah in tow. Schatz hit lapped traffic again on lap 36, allowing Saldana to close the gap. But, Saldana ran out of laps and Schatz took he win. Saldana, Stewart, Kemenah, Jason Meyers and Haudenschild would follow to the checkers.
“I knew we would be good when we got to traffic,” Schatz noted. “We just had to wait through our car a little bit. We had a really good car, but had to wait for the fuel load to come off. That’s something we have been working on all year, to get our car better late in the race, like it’s been the last couple of years, and we got it tonight.”

Schatz is currently second in World of Outlaws points, as he chases his third consecutive title. He is in his first season behind the wheel for two-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart. Schatz was looking forward to calling his boss after picking up the win on Friday night, before heading to Eldora Speedway tomorrow, which Stewart also owns.

“He is pushing us, as he should be and that’s no different than my dad would,” said the second generation driver of his car owner. “My dad is pushing us too. I’m glad to have that. That says a lot when you get pushed. That’s what we need. That’s what these guys need and that’s what I need. We’re going there tomorrow and will try to get out of there with a victory.”

Saldana earned his seventh top-five finish of the season aboard the Budweiser/Open Joist Mopar-powered JEI. After lining up fourth, he was engaged in a number of battles over the course of the 40-lap event, including with 20-time series champion Steve Kinser, Jac Haudenschild and then Chad Kemenah in the late going.

“It was a good run for us,” said Saldana, driver of the Kasey Kahne Racing entry. “We had a driver error in qualifying and I had to redeem myself inthe heat race. We got up through there in the (Crane Cams) Dash. In the feature, we kind of fell back and stuck with it and got going. I thought Iwas catching him with five to go. I was catching him off of (turn) two, but catching him is one thing and passing him is another. It was definitely a good run for us.”

Stewart earned his third top-five finishi n the last four events, driving a Steve Kent-built machine for the Roth Motorsports team. He also wrapped up the title in the Qwik Liner Cup, after turning the second fastest lap in time trials, to take the crown over Craig Dollansky by a single point. He will be awarded the Qwik Liner Cup at Knoxville Raceway next weekend.

“It was a great race,” Stewart said. “We don’t get to see that many tracks that are slick from the top to the bottom like that. Generally when they get that slick they take rubber, but the guys here at Attica did a great job. We were steady all night. We weren’t spectacular but we were good enough to get up there. It was another strong finish and I’m happy with it.”

As is usually the case at a high-banked bullring like Attica Raceway Park, the leaders were in traffic for a majority of the race. This allowed several drivers to make up ground late in the race. Saldana was able to close in a little bit on Schatz in the late going, but also had some trouble getting around a few of the lapped machines.

“We were running a different line than they were,” noted the native of Brownsburg, Indiana. “The biggest problem for me was that my car was so tight that I had to run the top and the guys that I was trying to pass were sliding across the top. Every time I would get a run on them it was hard for me to get underneath them. It was a tough race for us as tight as we were.”

Shane Stewart used restarts on the 27th and 29th laps to gain a number of positions. He first got around Jason Meyers on a restart, and then on the final restart he charged past Jac Haudenschild and Chad Kemenah both exiting the second turn.

“I found a little bit of moisture coming off of (turn) two,” Stewart shared. “You had to go in there so slow and it was a restart thing. I was fortunate enough to get a few cars on each restarts. I just inched my way up to the front. I think once I got to third that was about as far as I was going to do. I don’t think I had anything for (Donny) Schatz or (Joey) Saldana.”

After an accident in the second heat race, Daryn Pittman was taken to a local hospital for precautionary reasons after having pain in his back. After observation, he released and will return to action on Saturday night.

In the Service Drive Solutions UMP Attica Late Models, Brad Eitnear scored his first career Attica win in the rain-shortened feature over defending track champion Ken Hahn, Jeremy Canada, Michael Stiltner and Ryan Missler.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action on Friday, June 6 as Burns Electric presents the Mid-Season Championship with double points for the 410 sprints, 305 sprints, late models and dirt trucks.

WHAT: With the first East Coast swing of the season now in the rearview mirror, the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series heads back to the Midwest, for a pair of events in Ohio this weekend, beginning at Attica Raceway Park on Friday, May 30, followed by their second visit of the season to Eldora Speedway on Saturday, May 31. There have been six different drivers visit Victory Lane this year, with current series championship point leader Jason Meyers leading the way with five A-Feature triumphs. Also with multiple victories are 20-time series champion Steve Kinser, along with Craig Dollansky. A total of 12 drivers have led laps in A-Feature competition in what is shaping up to be one of the most competitive seasons in series history.

WHEN: On Friday, May 30 at Attica Raceway Park, the pit gates will open at 3:30 p.m. Eastern, with the grandstand gates opening at 5 p.m. Eastern and hot laps are tentatively set for 6:30 p.m.

WHERE: Attica Raceway Park is located Northeast of State Road 4 & U.S. 224 in Attica, Ohio. From this intersection drive 1/4 mile north on Route 4 to Lemmon Street, then 3/4 miles east to the Attica Fairgrounds

5.23.08 Results 305 ENGINE BUILDERS CHALLENGE

Clark Nabs 305 Attica Loot; Schlenk Back In Victory Lane; Ward Scores Truck Win

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Bobby Clark has raced 410 sprints, 360 sprints and 305 sprints, and it’s the later that is providing him with a lot of fun and putting him in victory lane again.

The Fremont, Ohio driver led all 30 laps to take the $1,200 in the 305 Engine Builders’ Challenge at Attica Raceway Park Friday night. Engine builders Gressman Powersports, Griff’s Engines and Level Performance sponsored the highest paying purse at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” venue for the 305 sprints.

“The car was very good once again. This thing has been a blast to drive all year…we’ve passed a lot of cars. These guys (Davis brothers) like to have fun at the track…that’s what it is all about,” said Clark beside his Crown Battery, Fremont Fence, Jenny’s Copper Penny, B&L Plumbing backed sprinter.

Clark held off several late race challenges by both Bryan Sebetto and fast qualfier and new track-record holder Todd Heuerman for his second victory of the season and fourth overall in the 305 sprint division.

“Those two guys worked me over pretty good. I would go low to block the 18 car (Heuerman) and I could hear Sebetto up top. I didn’t know which way to go. The tires started to fade at the end, but it was just such a great car tonight,” said Clark.

Image Jackson, Michigan’s Rusty Schlenk proved his early season Attica win was no fluke, using a great restart on the ninth lap to take the lead and the victory in the Service Drive Solutions UMP Attica Late Models. Lapped traffic almost cost Schlenk the win, as Tyler Boggs nearly got under him coming down for the checkered.

“This win goes to Brad Eitnear and his owners. We grenaded our engine last week at Oakshade and they let us borrow one to race tonight,” said Schlenk beside his Racers Connection, CJ Rayburn Racecars, Maint Company backed late model.

“Normally this place only pays $500 to win and look at the competition that draws. This is some of the toughest late model racing in this area on a weekly basis,” said Schlenk having won $1,000 for his efforts.

Sandusky, Ohio’s Cory Ward took the lead on the second lap and went on to score a convincing win in the 15-lap dirt truck feature. It was his second victory of the season at Attica and sixth overall at the speedplant, putting him just one win behind the division’s leader in wins, Art Ball.

“I don’t like to get out into the lead that early…I don’t know who’s coming. But the truck was so good tonight…it was just easy to drive,” said Ward beside his Excuses Lounge, Budweiser, TJ Hosang Construction, Precision Body & Frame backed track.

Clark, who started on the pole for the 305 sprint feature by virtue of his win in the dash which pitted the eight fastest qualifiers who transfered to the feature, bolted to the early lead with Heuerman, who broke the 16-year-old track record earlier, and Benny Bowman in tow.

Image While Heuerman kept Clark in his sights, the racing behind he duo was action-packed between 7th place starter Sebetto, point leader Cap Henry, Stuart Brubaker and Dustin Dinan. Several cautions kept the leaders from getting to lapped traffic early in the race.

Sebetto would finally get around Heuerman utilizing his familiar high groove on lap eight and would race side by side with Clark over the next 10 laps before Heuerman would slip back by on lap 21. Things would heat up on lap 23 when the leaders finally encountered lapped traffic.

However, Henry and Brubaker would get together fighting for fourth apot on lap 27, with Henry going back pitside with front end damage. That gave Clark a clear track, but he still could not shake Sebetto and Heuerman. Clark was forced to alter his racing groove – from low in turns 1 and 2 and high in turns 3 and 4, to hug the bottom nearly every lap to stop Heuerman’s advance. Sebetto used the opportunity to bounce off the top cushion in turns 3 and 4 and pull even with Clark for the lead.

Clark was able to hold on for the win, with Sebetto, Heuerman, 13th place starter Kevin Lee and Dinan rounding out the top five.

Brad Eitnear would grave the early lead in the 25-lap late model main, with Tyler Boggs, John Mayes Sr., Ernie Haynes and Chuck Hummer following. Schlenk, who started 9th, would move into fifth by the second lap and drive between Hummer and Mayes into the third spot on lap eight.

Following a yellow on lap 9, Schlenk would get a great restart to drive around both Boggs and Eitnear to grab the lead. He would flirt with disaster nearly every lap, bouncing off the big top side cushion. While Schlenk led, Boggs would drive under Eitnear into the runner-up spot. Over the next 13 laps the top three remained Schlenk, Boggs and Eitnear, with Hummer battling with Haynes and a fast closing Dusty Moore for fourth.

At the checkered flag, Schlenk held off a last turn challenge by Boggs, with Moore, Eitnear and Jeremy Canada rounding out the top five.

Chester Fitch grabbed the early lead in the 15-lap truck main, with Ward, Alex Weichman, Brian Sorg and Dan Henning following. Ward would drive to Fitch’s outside on the second lap to take the lead. He held off teammates Bob Dible and Steve Endicott on a couple of yellow flag restarts to secure the win. Endicott, Dible, Henning and Brian Arnold – who came from the back after an early race altercation and two flat tires – rounding out the top five.
