Gressman Wins Battle Of Slide Jobs To Take Attica FAST 410 Sprint Win; Moore In Right Place To Grab Late Model Victory; Clark Tames 305 Field

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Phil Gressman and Brock Mayes put on a slide-job clinic the last eight laps of the 410 sprint feature at Attica Raceway Park Friday night, trading the lead at every corner, drawing “oohs and aahs” from the large crowd. Gressman would ultimately prevail for his fifth career feature on Fisher Performance, Merrill Lynch Night.

Not to be outdone, the Fultz Fabrications and Speed Shop UMP Late Models waged an exciting battle, with Dusty Moore inheriting the lead when on lap 19 when Rusty Schlenk experienced mechanical woes, and then held off a hard-charging Jon Henry for his first career super late model victory at “Ohio’s Finest” speedplant.

Bobby Clark held off several restart challenges from Paul Weaver to earn his second Fremont Fence 305 Sprint feature victory of 2010.

“That’s what you people spend your hard-earned dollars to see…a race like that,” said Gressman beside his Genzman Enterprises, Level Performance backed #53. “I kept searching around for a place on the track and every time I did someone was there to slide up in front of me. That was as an exciting, fun race as I’ve battled in for a long time. I have to thank Dee and Marilyn Genzman for everything they’ve done for me and my crew, Bill and Jamie and my dad…they have worked their tails off. I told them we have passed a lot of cars this year and if we ever get to start up front we’ll have something for them.”

“We have dug ourselves a hole on this FAST (Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title) deal with some mechanical problems last week. And I can tell you the rest of these guys won’t lie down… this is some of the toughest competition you’ll find week in and week out. So we’ll have to keep working hard if we’re going to challenge for that championship,” added Gressman.

Phil Gressman – FAST 410 Sprints
Gressman would grab the early lead of the 30-lap 410 sprint feature from his outside front row starting spot. But on lap five fifth starter Craig Mintz had moved into second and raced under Gressman to challenge for the lead. Gressman and Mintz would exchange slide jobs over the next six laps with Mintz gaining the upper hand with a move in turns three and four on lap 11. Gressman would return the favor in turns one and two and Mintz would follow suit in three and four over the next couple of laps. Gressman would regain the lead with a slide job of his own exiting turn four on lap 15, but Mintz wouldn’t give up and would continuously drive under Gressman.

Disaster struck for Mintz coming down to complete lap 21 when he smacked the outside concrete exiting turn four. He kept rolling, but Jody Keegan went up against the wall to bring out the yellow. Mintz would retire to the pits with a broken race car. On the restart, Brock Mayes, who had been in a tremendous battle for third with 12th starter Dean Jacobs and 9th starter Byron Reed, would get his elbows up and execute the slide job in turns one and two to take the top spot on lap 23. Gressman kept his composure and returned the favor the next lap and the excitement was boiling over in the stands. Mayes would again drive under and slide up in front of Gressman to lead laps 26 and 27. With three laps to go, Reed made it a three-car battle for the lead with the trio nearly hitting the front stretch wall exiting turn four. Gressman would slide in front of Mayes on lap 28 and would stay up top to take his fifth career victory at ARP. Reed would get by Mayes on the last lap with Mark Keegan and Bryan Sebetto rounding out the top five.

Dusty Moore – UMP Late Models
To start the 25-lap late model feature, first it was Wayne Maffett Jr., Moore and Rusty Schlenk, who came into the night the national UMP point leader, battling for the lead. Then it was Maffett and Schlenk who raced side-by-side from laps 4 through eight as a handful of cautions slowed the excitement. On a lap 9 restart Moore would execute the slider to take the lead and began to pull away, while Maffett, Moore, Henry, Rick DeLong, Ernie Hayes, Ryan Markham and Ryan Missler waged a torrid battle behind. After a caution for Missler who slid off the banking in turns 3 and 4 on lap 13. Maffett began to once again pressure Schlenk for the lead. But, with 9 laps to go, Maffett would pull into the infield with mechanical woes, moving Moore into second and Henry up to third. Schlenk was then on cruise control, but he too would slow with problems on lap 19, handing the lead to Moore.

Moore was not out of the woods yet, as Henry would drive to his inside as the two raced side-by-side over the final five laps. As the pair exited turn four for the checkers, Henry would drive off the bottom right beside Moore . Moore would get the win by a nose over Henry with DeLong, Ken Hahn and Haynes rounding out the top five.

“Don’t every let anyone tell you luck doesn’t mean anything. I mean I was cruising there in third and was content to go home with that. Then all of a sudden I’m getting covered with oil from Maffett and Schlenk. Hey, you have to be there to take advantage of that. Then I saw Henry on the bottom and I wasn’t going to let him get me,” said Moore beside his WD 40, Markey Ambulance Rental, Dominator Race Products, Warpaint Graphics backed #WD40.

Bobby Clark – 305 Sprints
Nate Dussel would grab the early lead in the 305 sprint main with Dustin Stroup, Clark and Weaver in tow. On lap two Clark and Weaver would drive around Stroup, with D.J. Foos entering the fray on lap three. Dussel and Clark would race side-by-side over the next two laps with Clark executing the slide job for the lead exiting turn 4 on lap 6. Weaver would do the same to take second a lap later, bringing Foos up to third.

Following a couple of cautions, Weaver would attempt the slide job on Clark on the restart, but Clark was too strong up top and continued to lead. Just as the leaders were getting ready to hit heavy lapped traffic on lap 14, the caution would fly. Clark would again hold of Weaver on the restart with Foos having his hands full with Zack Kramer, Steve Rando and 15th place starter Matt Merrill. With a clear track ahead, Clark would drive away for his 13th career 305 sprint victory with Weaver second, followed by Rando, Kramer and Foos.

“The car wasn’t as good as I like it here. The trick was to get to the top and keep it there. I have to thank my owner Al Davis and all my crew…they worked their tails off tonight to make the car better,” said Clark beside his Fremont Fence, Crown Battery, Jenny’s Copper Penny, Erlin Trader, B&L Plumbing backed #40.

Wilson Holds Off Jacobs For 410 Attica FAST Win; Missler Gets First 2010 Late Model Win; Rando Nips Kramer, Weaver For 305 Victory

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) The racing at Attica Raceway Park has been nothing short of spectacular so far in 2010 and Friday night, April 23 was no exception. The in the 410 sprints, late models and 305 sprints on All Pro Cylinder Heads/Construction Equipment & Supply Night saw drivers coming from deep in the fields to challenge for feature wins.

Two-time All Star champion Greg Wilson held off a late race charge from Dean Jacobs, who started 16th and was involved in an opening race spin, to record his 19th career Attica victory in the 410 sprint division to open the 2010 Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title Championship Series. The FAST series is a 22-race series – 11 races at Attica and 11 at Fremont – that pays out a separate point fund for the 410 sprints from that of the two tracks.

Defending Attica champion Ryan Missler held off continued challenges from Rusty Schlenk to score his first victory of the season in the Fultz Fabrications & Speed Shop UMP Late Models.

And, just beating the rain drops, the Fremont Fence 305 Sprints put on a whale of a racing exhibition, with Steve Rando, Zack Kramer and 14th starter Paul Weaver going three wide out of turn four coming down for the checkers. Rando would edge Kramer by a wheel for his first career Attica win

Greg Wilson – FAST 410 Sprints
After an opening race yellow for a Brock Mayes, Dean Jacobs spin, outside front row starter Bryan Sebetto would also stop with a sticking throttle. That would move Wilson up to the outside front row for the start of the 30-lap affair. He would first battle five-time Attica champion Byron Reed, but was able to pull away in the middle portion of the race. However, Jacobs, who went to the tail on the opening mishap, continued to use the extreme bottom groove to work his way to the front. By lap 8 he had moved to 6th and got to third on lap 14. Jacobs would drive under Reed for second just past the halfway mark and would begin to hunt down Wilson . When the leaders hit lapped traffic on lap 22, Jacobs was right on Wilson ’s back bumper. Wilson , driving the All Star Plumbing and Heating backed W20 would stay smooth and record the win.

“The race track…I mean the way the weather looked…the race track was awesome. There were a couple of grooves. I ran the bottom most of the race and I moved up to the top in three and four and I saw Dean (Jacobs) duck underneath of me and I thought man I better get to where I like to be and put this thing in the bag,” said Wilson beside his DNC Hydraulics, TTI Supply, Don Snyder Excavating, Kear’s Speed Shop backed sprinter. “It’s great to win…this place has been so darn good to me. We’ve had a rough couple of weeks. We were heading to the Outlaw shows and broke down and didn’t even get there. Veryl Warnimont has stuck behind me through thick and thin. I have to thank my guys, Floyd and Jason and we brought on Rick Ferkel…man what an awesome experience working with a legend and I think he’s going to help me win some races.”

“We’ve struggled just getting the terminology right but we’re getting closer obviously. Hopefully we can get something for the 83 (2009 All Star champion Tim Shaffer) in the All Star deal. They’re pretty tough and we have to keep picking up our game,” added Wilson.

Ryan Missler – UMP Late Models
Bellevue, Ohio’s Missler has been close to winning several times in the early 2010 season. He took advantage of an outside front row starting spot and stayed smooth up against the top cushion, and didn’t get rattled with Schlenk pulled right on his bumper and raced inside of him throughout the 25-lap feature, with last week’s winner Doug Drown also coming into the picture late in the race.

“The race car was really good…and we got some things figured out. I knew who was behind me…that new scoreboard is great, you can go past on the front stretch and see what lap you’re on and who’s behind you so you know what to do,” said Missler beside his Terry McConnell Excavating, York Fabrication, Quality Welding, Taze DJ Services, Missler Industries backed late model.

“I knew I just had to keep it straight and keep it on top. You can carry so much momentum up there and the cushion always helps. I have to thank all my guys, Jerry Huff, Dave Goulick and my dad (Norb) and my wife Amber and everyone that helps out on the car,” added Missler.

Anyone who left after the first two feature events missed a dandy with the 305 sprints. Rando would get the early lead but had to hold off challenges from first Brad Bowman and then John Ivy. Ivy would actually drive under Rando to lead lap 7, but Rando would slingshot around to regain the top spot the next two laps only to see Ivy creep by on the bottom to lead laps 10 and 11. Right behind them Rich Farmer would continually apply pressure and then 10 laps into the event, 9th starter Kramer would make it a four-car lead battle.

Steve Rando – 305 Sprints
By lap 13, Rando, Ivy and Kramer would race side-by-side for the lead. Kramer would drive under both Ivy and Rando to take the lead on lap 17, but Rando would continue to hound him up top. As Kramer got the five-to-go signal, he hit lapped traffic in the non-stop feature, and Kramer used a backmarker as a pick entering turn three to drive back into the lead. As those two battled up front, last week’s winner Paul Weaver had worked his way from 14th starting spot into third on lap 20. With three laps to go, it was now a three-way battle for the lead between Rando, Kramer and Weaver – Rando was up top with Kramer on the bottom and Weaver utilizing the entire racing surface. As they raced through turns three and four on the final lap they came out side-by-side-by-side and Rando took the win by two feet over Kramer and five feet over Weaver.

“I couldn’t see behind me I just knew Kramer was beside me and I just held my line. I started trying harder and I passed him again and then on the last lap I saw Paul Weaver and I thought ‘oh no this is going to be a catastrophe.’ But we all made it…they made me work for it. I didn’t even know I won it…I thought Kramer got it,” said Rando beside his Kistler Engines, Garza Construction, Attitudes Hair Salon, Lakeview Electric, A Tolento Auto, North Coast Sealing backed #19r.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, April 30 on Fisher Performance/Merrill Lynch Night. It will be another FAST Championship Series event for the 410 sprints with the late models and 305 sprints also in action.
