Byron Reed Gets Redemption, Takes Second All Star Victory At Attica To Open Ohio Sprint Speedweek; Drown Claims Late Model Win

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) All looked lost for Byron Reed when he slid off the track while leading late in the race. But redemption was just around the corner for the Monclova , Ohio driver when leader Tim Shaffer ran out of fuel with five laps remaining, handing Reed the lead. He would go on to take the opening night of Ohio Sprint Speedweek at Attica Raceway Park Friday, his second O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions win at the track this season.

Reed was given the lead on lap 22 as he pressured Stevie Smith in lapped traffic and Smith spun in turn two. Reed pulled away on the restart, but a caution for Smith on lap 26 bunched up the field. Again Reed pulled away from All Star point leader Shaffer with Bryan Sebetto and Dale Blaney waging a tremendous battle for third. Disaster struck for Reed on lap 32 as he slipped off the high side of turn two, allowing Shaffer to drive under him for the lead.

A caution on lap 35 for a Brandon Martin spin in turn four was almost trouble for leader Shaffer, as he narrowly missed hitting him, squeezing between Martin and the front stretch guard rail. Sebetto’s great run would end on the next lap as he drove off turn three. During the caution, Shaffer and Blaney would stop after running out of fuel, necessitating a fuel stop and sending them to the tail.

All Star officials said the rule is 40 laps or one hour from the time the first car pushes off. They indicated 14 minutes were still remaining before a fuel stop would be necessary and since Shaffer and Blaney stopped they would go to the tail.

That handed the lead back to Reed and he would drive away for his third Attica win of the season on Legends Sports Pub & Grille Night. Last week’s winner Mark Keegan, who drove into the rear of Reed’s car as the field stopped for the red flag fuel stop, damaging the front wing of his car, would come home second while 16th place starter Dean Jacobs would race into another third place finish.

Reed, a five-time Attica champion, now has 25 career victories at “ Ohio ’s Finest Racing” speedplant, good for second on the track’s all-time win list. It was his ninth career All Star victory as well.

“I made a mistake and thought it was over. I must have had a pretty good lead…when I came back on the track I was still in second. I knew Tim (Shaffer) was having fuel issues..I know I was close but I think I would have made it. This JEI chassis and Kistler engine is running great,” said Reed beside his Reebar Diecasting, Weld Wheels backed #5. “Isn’t this great…the two locals running first and second.”

For Keegan, the second place run means he’ll go to night #2 of the nine-night Ohio Sprint Speedweek at KC Raceway.

Image“I was looking up to see how many more laps were left and Byron stopped for the red and I hit him. I thought I was done, but they pushed me around and the crew said other than front wing it was okay. We nursed it home second. This is awesome for the local guys to beat a field like this,” said Keegan beside his Midwest Transportation, Jon Wright Custom Chrome Plating #X.

Jacobs has been a consistent top three finisher this season and is happy with the progress of his young team.

“I just keep getting a great race car…it’s been a blast to drive. We will get wins,” said Jacobs beside his Northwest Ohio Towing and Recovery, NAPA Truck and Auto Center backed #97. “These guys need to put bigger fuel tanks on. It’s their own fault they ran out of fuel. We put a 33-gallon tank on and had plenty of fuel. They know the rule and it bit them.”

After an opening lap red for a crash involving Brian Lay, Cole Duncan and David Gravel, Smith, the 2009 Ohio Speedweek champion bolted into the lead with Reed, Shaffer, Blaney and Sebetto in tow. Another red flag for a Cap Henry tip over which collected Brandon Wimmer after one lap was scored wiped out Smith’s lead. On the ensuing restart Smith began stretching out his lead with Reed and Shaffer comfortably in second and third while Blaney and Sebetto raced side by side for fourth.

Jody Keegan would drive off turn three on lap six while running sixth, to bring out a caution. Once again Smith pulled away with the lead on the restart with Reed, Shaffer, Blaney and Sebetto in tow. Sebetto would take fourth from Blaney on lap 11 and that’s the way the remained until a caution on lap 11 for Kevin Lee. Every time Smith would build a lead, the caution would fly as it did on lap 15 for Lee Jacobs who stopped on the track.

Smith set a torrid pace on the restart, catching the rear of the field just seven laps later, allowing Reed to close on his rear bumper. As the pair raced nose to tail into turns one and two trying to pick their way through traffic, Smith would spin, bringing out the caution and sending him to the tail. Now Reed led over Shaffer, Sebetto, Blaney and Keegan. The running order would remain that way until lap 26 when Smith would stop on the track for another caution. Reed pulled away on the restart while Shaffer ran comfortably in second with Sebetto and Blaney still racing hard for third.

On lap 32, Reed missed his marks in turn two, driving off the high side of the track, handing the lead to Shaffer, as Reed reentered the track in second. Then began the bizarre events on lap 35 when the caution flew for Brandon Martin, as Shaffer narrowly missed hitting him. On the restart Sebetto would drive off turn three and another caution would see the fuel issue come into play.

In the 25-lap Fultz Fabrications and Speeds Shop UMP Late Model feature, Wooster, Ohio’s Doug Drown put on a dominating performance, opening up over a half track lead. Only two cautions on lap 16 and 17 would slow his march to victory lane. He would power to his second Attica win of 2010.

“We wasn’t even going to come here tonight, but we knew the World of Outlaws are coming here at the end of July and we wanted to try some things and boy did they work,” said Drown beside his Wooster Glace, D.J. Directional Services, Lazer Chassis backed #12.

Wayne Maffett Jr. would drive from his 11th starting spot to second with Ken Hahn, Jeff Babcock and Ryan Missler rounding out the top five.

Over a $241,000 up for grabs during 9 nights of Ohio Sprint Speedweek

By Brian Liskai: (Carmargo, IL) Ohio Sprint Speedweek has become a tradition unlike any others. Fans plan their vacations around the event and race teams spend months preparing for it. The 28th Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek featuring the O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champion Sprint Cars will feature nine straight nights of racing across the Buckeye State , paying out over $241,000 in prize money along the way.

Twenty-seven years ago, former Eldora Speedway owner Earl Baltes sat down with then All Star president Bert Emick to discuss the idea of a week-long series of races to highlight the great tracks and race teams who call Ohio home. Thus came about Ohio Sprint Speedweek. Now, other states and sanctioning bodies have copied the idea, but Ohio ’s version remains one of the most anticipated events of the summer with average car counts in the 40s.

The first eight nights of Ohio Sprint Speedweek will pay the All Star sprint feature winner $5,000 with the final night at Fremont Speedway offering up a big $10,000 to win payday.

It all kicks off Friday, June 18 at Attica Raceway Park on Legend’s Sports Pub and Grille Night as the O’Reilly Auto Parts All Stars battle the tough weekly regulars at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” speed plant for the $5,000 top prize. The UMP late models will also be in action. Gates open at 4 p.m. with racing underway at 7:45 p.m. General admission tickets are $22 for adults; $20 for senior citizens; $10 for teens ages 11-15; with kids 10 and under admitted free. Sunday, June 20 brings the All Stars back to the half-mile of Millstream Speedway near Findlay , Ohio . The track roared back to life in 2008 after having sat idle for nearly nine years. The Speedweek show will be the first of 2010 for the track. Last year’s Ohio Sprint Speedweek show at Millstream drew the highest car count as over 60 sprints jammed the pits. Joining the All Star sprints will be the UMP modifieds. On Monday, the rabid fans of Wayne County Speedway will pack the stands for night #4 of Ohio Sprint Speedway. A part of Speedweek since its inception, the three-eighths mile oval located near Orrville, also draws a pretty good contingent of Pennsylvania drivers. The modifieds will also be in action. Tuesday finds the All Star sprints at Hilltop Speedway near Millersburg , Ohio . The one-third mile high banks offer plenty of racing room “on the hill.” The modifieds will also be in action. From one bullring to another, as the night #6 of Ohio Sprint Speedweek heads to Waynesfield Motorsports Park near Waynesfield , Ohio on Wednesday, June 23. The high-banked third-mile has produced some of the closest finishes in Speedweek history. Joining the All Star sprints will be the compacts and four-cylinder Tough Trucks. On Thursday, June 24, the All Stars had to Sharon Speedway. It’s been several years since the All Star competed at three-eighths mile high banked clay oval located near Hartford , Ohio . Several Pennsylvania teams will no-doubt head to Sharon to battle the All Stars. The limited sprints will also be in competition. Night #8 finds the all stars at the high banks of Limaland Motorsports Park on Elwer Fence Night. Again, the nature of the track – a quarter mile, wide, high-banked dirt oval – guarantees tight, close racing action. The UMP modifieds will also be in action. The pit gates will open at 3 p.m. with grandstands gates opening at 4 p.m.

Speedweek wraps up at the historic Fremont Speedway with a big $10,000 to win event on Budweiser Night. The nonwing 305 sprints will also be in action. It will be the 92nd appearance of the All Stars in the 59-year history of “The Track That Action Built.” The tough weekly competitor will give the All Star travelers all they can handle. In fact, the last All Star appearance, young local racer Bryan Sebetto held off defending All Star champ Tim Shaffer to score the win. Another interesting twist to the Ohio Sprint Speedweek is the Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title (FAST) Championship Series is offering a $1,000 cash bonus to any FAST series driver who can take the Speedweek title. A $500 bonus is being offered to the highest finishing FAST driver in the week’s final point standings. FAST is an 22-race series -11 shows at Fremont Speedway and 11 at Attica Raceway Park – that awards a separate point fund from that of the two weekly tracks.

Fremont Speedway Promoter Rich Farmer and Attica Raceway Park Promoter John Bores are putting up the cash for the bonus as a reward for the support these teams have shown their tracks this season. This will, of course, help insure bigger car counts at the other tracks participating in Ohio Sprint Speedweek.

“I think the FAST series has been great for our local drivers and we want to see these teams support Ohio Speedweek and compete with the drivers from other areas around Ohio as well as give the All Stars a run for the money each night,” said Farmer. “Ohio Speedweek has always been one of the biggest weeks of sprint car racing in the State of Ohio and we would like to see these guys take it seriously and go compete each night and show the fans across the state what we get to see each weekend at Attica and Fremont.”

Drivers eligible for the cash bonus include Byron Reed, who beat the All Stars earlier this year at Attica; Brock Mayes, Mark Keegan, Phil Gressman, Craig mintz, Kevin Lee, Chris Andrews, Jody Keegan, Bryan Sebetto, Brandon Martin, David Harrison, Todd Heller, Mike Linder, Brian Smith, Shawn Valenti and Duane Zablocki.

The roster of drivers expected to compete during Ohio Sprint Speedweek will include defending and current All Star point leader Tim Shaffer; two-time All Star champion Greg Wilson; 2009 speedweek champion Stevie Smith; four-time Ohio Sprint Speedweek champion Dale Blaney; Pennsylvania Posse members Lance Dewease, Fred Rahmer and possibly Brian Leppo, Brian Monteith, Greg Hodnett and others; and young guns like Cap Henry, Jared Ridge, David Gravel, Jessica Zemken and more. When they come up against some of the strongest weekly 410 sprint drivers in the nation, just making the A-main will be a challenge.

Last year nearly 100 different drivers competed during Ohio Sprint Speedweek.

“Besides the purse money, we’re paying nearly $28,000 in appearance money this week which should contribute to very strong car counts. Ohio Sprint Speedweek is an event unlike any other. Ohio is among the elite 410 sprint states in the country, producing some of the best drivers and teams you’ll find any where,” said Guy Webb, President of the O’Reilly Auto Parts All Stars. “Speedweek will test the drivers and crews and will have a lot to say about who win the All Star title and the $50,000 at the end of the year.”

FAST Series Offers 2010 Ohio Speedweek Cash Bonus

(Maumee, OH) For the second year in a row, the organizers of the Fremont/Attica Sprint Title in cooperation with the promoters of Attica Raceway Park and Fremont Speedway are offering a $1000 cash bonus to any FAST Series driver who can win the Ohio Sprint Speedweek points title. If one of the F.A.S.T. regulars cannot take the top spot, a $500 Bonus will be paid to the highest finishing F.A.S.T. regular for the week. If a F.A.S.T. driver does win the Speedweek title and the $1000 bonus, the $500 will be awarded to the second highest F.A.S.T. driver in the week’s standings. Points will be based on the All Star’s Ohio Speedweek points system which awards 100 points to the winner of each event and is reduced by 1 point per position through the entire field (including B-main and C-main). No show up points are calculated for determining Ohio Speedweek points.

Ohio Sprint Speedweek is 9 days of sanctioned All Star Circuit of Champions events starting this Friday (June 18th) at Attica Raceway Park paying $5,000 to win and ending a week from saturday (June 26th) at Fremont Speedway for the $10,000 to win finale. The week of events are to be held at the following tracks across the state of Ohio. Attica Raceway Park (6/18), KC Raceway (6/19), Millstream Speedway (6/20), Wayne County Speedway (6/21), Hilltop Speedway (6/22), Waynsefield Motorsports Park (6/23), Sharon Speedway (6/24), Limaland Motorsports Park (6/25), Fremont Speedway (6/26).

There is enough talent in Northern Ohio to go out and win the Ohio Sprint Speedweek title if any of the eligible teams should choose to run the full 9 night schedule. The FAST organization wishes these teams the best of luck in defending their turf and showing the fans in Ohio what we are lucky enough to see on a weekly basis.

Mark Keegan Finds Attica Victory Lane For 56th Time; D.J. Foos Claims 3rd 305 Win; Arnold Takes Trucks

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Mark Keegan is having a pretty darn good week. Last Saturday he was inducted into the Fremont Speedway Hall of Fame. Then on June 7, he celebrated his 52nd birthday. It’s also the 15th anniversary of his biggest win, when he passed Steve Kinser and took the Ohio Sprint Speedweek win at Attica in 1995. To cap off the week, he scored his 56th career feature win in a 410 sprint at Attica Raceway Park Friday on American Power Sports of Findlay Night.

Keegan, who has more feature wins at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” speed plant than any other driver – Byron Reed is second with 24 victories – showed his experience on the one-third mile oval, setting up Chris Andrews for the winning pass on lap 22. Keegan had hounded Andrews, the defending Attica track champion, from lap 8 on, racing right on his rear bumper. Then Keegan shot off the top of turn 2 on lap 22 and dove under Andrews in turn three for the lead.

“I kind of forgot how to get up here…but it doesn’t take long to remember,” joked Keegan in victory lane beside his Midwest Transportation backed #X. “It’s been awhile since I’ve been here. The trouble is there’s all these young kids that just mash on the gas and they’re fast. Tonight we had a little bit of luck. We didn’t have to start in the back of the heat and we didn’t have to run the B and we didn’t have to start in the back of the feature. This is a brand new JEI car and boy it’s pretty nice.”

“Dale (Blaney) was putting some pressure on me for second. Thank God for the caution. I was able to roll the wing back a little and it made the car better. I knew that I had to get past Chris (Andrews) because Dale was there. When the caution came out I saw Dale in the infield and I thought ‘boy this could be my night,’” added Keegan, who is from Fremont, Ohio.

In the Fremont Fence 305 Sprints, Fremont’s D.J. Foos passed Paige Polyak on lap 10 and cruised to his third Attica win of 2010.

“This is amazing…I don’t think I could have ever dreamed of this,” said Foos beside his Burger King, Level Performance, Buckshot Farms backed #11F. “Dad gives me a good race car every time and I just drive the wheels off the thing.

Brian Arnold – Dirt Trucks
Tiffin’s Brian Arnold, fresh off his second place run last week in the Computer Man Dirt Trucks, battled with Alex Weichman door to door for two laps before getting under him for the lead on lap 5. The pair continued to battle side by side until Weichman spun on lap 11. Arnold then pulled away the remaining four laps for his first win of the season and eighth of his career.

“We’ve had a long dry spell, but it’s still fun. Last week we finally got some tires on her and its been good since,” said Arnold beside his Make-A-Wish Foundation, Air Cooled Engines, Burns Electric, Gingrich Automotive backed #33 truck.

At the drop of the green for the 30-lap 410 sprint feature, Scott Euler rocketed into the lead from his outside front row starting spot with Andrews, Jamie Miller and Keegan in tow. Miller would drive under both Andrews and Euler to grab the lead on lap three, with Andrews, Keegan, Dale Blaney challenging. Andrews would execute a slide job exiting turn four to take the lead on lap 7, with the caution then flying for David Harrison’s stalled car. On the restart Andrews could not shake Keegan as Miller and Blaney raced side by side for third. Phil Gressman would drive past Blaney into fourth on lap 9 while Keegan continued to race right on Andrews’ rear bumper for the lead.
Following a lap 10 caution for Todd Heller, Keegan resumed his pressure on Andrews with Blaney making it a three-car battle for the lead. Behind them Miller, Lee Jacobs, Gressman and Brock Mayes waged a tremendous war for fourth. Something went amiss on Blaney’s mount on lap 16 as he coasted to a rest, bringing out the caution. The running order was now Andrews, Keegan, Gressman, Jacobs, Miller, Byron Reed and Mayes. All eyes were glued on Bryan Sebetto, who jumped in the Robenalt #98 after the engine let go in his normal #16 ride in his heat, came from the tail of the B-main to finish third and had climbed from 19th starting spot in the A to 9th by lap 17.

On the ensuing restart, Andrews continued to race the bottom to middle of the track while Keegan remained tied to his rear bumper. Keegan was better on the top side of turns one and two used that to his advantage to set up the winning pass on lap 22 as the lead pack raced into lapped traffic. Andrews tried to recover in turns three and four, but spun while trying to pass a lapped machine and regain the lead. On the restart, it was all Keegan, as Gressman ran comfortably in second with Jacobs, Mayes and Reed battling for third. Behind that trio, Kevin Lee, Dean Jacobs and Sebetto would race hard, trading position nearly every lap.

When the checkered flew, Keegan had a five-car-length advantage over Gressman as Lee Jacobs, Reed and Mayes would round out the top five. Sebetto’s unbelievable run would net him a 7th place finish behind Kevin Lee.

It was another Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title Championship race, which means Keegan and Gressman inched closer to point leader Reed.

D.J. Foos – 305 Sprints
Paige Polyak drove into the lead of the 25-lap 305 sprint feature with Foos blasting from his fifth place starting spot into second by lap 2. Polyak and Foos would race side by side over the next eight laps before Foos would drive under her for the lead exiting turn four on lap 10. Foos would pull away as Polyak and Brad Bowman battled for second while behind that duo Matt Merrill, Nate Dussel and Stuart Brubaker traded the fourth spot back and forth.

Foos caught the back of the field on lap 12, but they were racing three wide. The young driver used patience and followed them, allowing Polyak and Bowman to close. Once the traffic spread out, Foos began picking his way through and again built a sizeable lead while Polyak and Bowman continued to race side by side for second with Dussel closing in to make it a three-car battle.

The only caution would fly on lap 22 when Bowman, while battling for second, made contact with the front stretch wall, ending his night. On the restart and a clear track ahead, Foos pulled away for the win with Polyak, Dussel, Brubaker and 16th starter Zack Kramer rounding out the top five.

Brian Sorg would lead the first lap of the dirt truck feature with Alex Weichman, Arnold, Cory Ward and Dan Hennig in tow. Weichman would drive under Sorg for the lead a lap later, with Arnold grabbing second on lap three. Arnold would race side by side with Weichman over the next nine laps until Weichman stop on lap 11. With four laps remaining, the running order was Arnold, Ward, Hennig, Kent Brewer and Bob Dible. Arnold was able to pull away for the win with Ward, Hennig, Brewer and Dible rounding out the top five.

Attica Raceway Park will kick off the 27th Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek on Friday, June 18th featuring the O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champion Sprints. Gates will open at 4 p.m. with racing underway at 7:45 p.m.
