Dean Jacobs Takes Attica 410 Loot; Jeff Babcock, Ryan Missler Share Late Model Wins; Brad Haudenschild, Zack Kramer Earn 305 Sprint Wins

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Dean Jacobs had a new power plant under the hood of his Joe and Diane Seeling owned sprint car and it ran to perfection as the Wooster, Ohio driver took the 410 sprint win at Attica Raceway Park on Edward Jones Financial Services of Clyde Night.

The Fultz Fabrications and Speed Shop UMP Late Models had two features to run – the remaining 18 laps of the rain-shortened event on Quality Welding/Aaron’s Sales and Lease Night and the night’s regular feature. In the make-up event, defending track champion Ryan Missler led all 25 laps for his second victory of the season, while in the night’s regular feature, Wayne , Ohio ’s Jeff Babcock dominated for his second victory of 2010.

The Fremont Fence 305 Sprints also had a make-up feature from July 23 and the night’s regular A-main. In the make-up event, Fredericksburg, Ohio’s Brad Haudenschild scored his second career win at Attica, while Fremont, Ohio’s Zack Kramer earned his first career Attica win in the night’s regular A-main.

Dean Jacobs – FAST 410 Sprints
In the 30-lap A-main for the 410 sprints, Jacobs led the entire distance for his ninth career Attica victory.

“Joe and Diane give us everything we need and we’re having fun. They bought us a new Griff’s Engine tonight and it’s a stout piece and I think it can get us into the A-main of the Knoxville Nationals,” said Jacobs beside his Northwest Ohio Towing and Recovery, NAPA Truck and Auto Center backed #97. “I felt lucky coming into the night and we pulled a good pill for the heat and a #1 for the feature.”

In the make-up late model event, Missler, who came into the night tied with Larry Kingseed atop the track’s point standings, held of challenges from Devin Schiels and then late in the race from Doug Drown and Jeff Babock to score the victory.

“We’ve had a terrible couple of months. We hurt our good motor and just haven’t been that good. We definitely needed this,” said Missler beside his Terry McConnell Excavating, Taze D.J. Services, Quality Welding, York Fabrication backed #50Y.

In the Mike Neill Financial Advisor/Edward Jones of Clyde Night feature, Babock led all 25 laps and except for a caution with one lap to go, had the race pretty much in control the entire distance.

“Shane and Jennifer Halcomb and my crew haven’t given up on me. We’ve struggled and have changed everything on this car and it’s getting very comfortable now,” said Babcock beside his Potash Corp., JEGS Performance Parts, University of Northwestern Ohio , Professional Drywall backed #1.

In the make-up A-main for the 305 sprints, Haudenschild drove his R&B Enterprises sprinter all over the track, slicing and dicing through lapped traffic to lead all 25 laps for the victory.

“I had to win…mom and dad are usually on their way to Knoxville and they stayed back so we could race,” said Haudenschild beside his Vision Express, Gressman Powersports backed #10.

In the night’s regular 305 sprint A-main, Zack Kramer held off Paul Weaver on a last lap restart to lead all 25 laps for the win.

“That’s probably the best I’ve ever driven in traffic. I was glad that yellow came out for a clear track but then I look on the scoreboard and see that 1W (Weaver) behind me and I knew he’d be pushing me on the restart. We’re finally getting this car figures out,” said Kramer beside his Fremont Fence, Kear’s Speed Shop, Jerry Zamora Roofing and Siding, B&L Plumbing backed #8k.

In the 410 sprint feature Jacobs would grab the early lead with Kody Kinser, last week’s winner Rob Chaney, rookie Shawn Valenti, Mark Keegan and Mike Linder in tow. Kinser’s run would end a lap later with a spin, moving Chaney into second. The driver on the move was Phil Gressman as he charged from 11th to 7th in just two laps. On the restart Jacobs went to the top with Chaney right on his rear bumper with Valenti battling Keegan and Gressman for third. Action would grind to a halt on lap five when Travis Philo took a nasty ride in turn three.

On the restart, Jacobs would pull away from Chaney with Keegan stealing third and Valenti and Gressman in tow. Jacobs would hit lapped traffic by the 12th circuit with the running order up front remaining unchanged. Craig Mintz would tumble off turn two on lap 17 to bring out the red with the running order Jacobs, Chaney, Keegan, Valenti, Gressman, Linder, Byron Reed, Brandon Martin, Caleb Griffith and Kevin Lee.

On the restart the field would only get another lap in when the caution flew for a Ryan Myers spin. On the restart Duane Zablocki would crash off turn one. Each time on the restart Jacobs would pull away, but as the laps ticked off Chaney would begin to reel him in. Just as Chaney got to Jacobs’ rear bumper, the caution would fly on lap 26 for an Aaron Middaugh spin.

With four laps remaining and a clear track, Jacobs would power away from Chaney while Gressman would slide under Keegan into third, with Martin moving into fifth and Reed to sixth. Jacobs would blast to the checkered over Chaney, Gressman, Keegan and Martin.

“Once I got out there I tried to be a little conservative and hit my marks. If Rob would have gotten to me I had something left,” said Jacobs about his Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title (FAST) Championship Series victory.

Ryan Missler – UMP Late Models
In the make-up late model feature, the race would resume on lap 8 with Missler leading Devin Schiels, Babock, Drown, Rocky Owens and Ken Hahn. Missler could not shake Schiels as Drown moved into third to challenge. The caution would fly on lap 9 for a Michael Stiltner spin and on the ensuing restart it was a tremendous three car battle for the lead between Missler, Schiels and Drown. That running order would remain the same until lap 14 when Drown drove around Schiels with Babcock sitting in fourth and Owens in fifth.

Missler would hit the back of the field by lap 16 as Drown attempted to close and Babcock moved into third. Following a caution for debris on lap 17, the race would go green the remaining eight laps. Missler just could not shake Drown who continually raced to his inside. Missler would hit his marks perfectly and would run to the checkered flag over Drown, Babcock, Ken Hahn and Dan Wallace.

Jeff Babcock – UMP Late Models
In the night’s regular late model feature, following two cautions to try and get the first lap in for Mike Bores and Matt Irey, Babock would jump into the lead with Chris Keller, Missler, Keith Berner, Ernie Haynes, Hahn, Tom Ordway and Schroyer in tow. Babcock would pull away to a commanding lead with Keller, Missler, Berner, Haynes, Hahn, Schroyer and Drown battling hard for second. A caution on lap five for a Stiltner spin would wipe out Babcock’s huge lead. However, it didn’t take him long to pull away again once the green came back out while Keller, Missler, Berner, and Schroyer continued to battle hard for second.

At the halfway mark of the race, Babcock had a 12 car length advantage over Keller who was battling Missler, Schroyer, Berner and Rick DeLong. Babcock caught the rear of the field on lap 16 but it would not slow his pace as Missler now challenged Keller for second. With seven laps remaining and Babcock on cruise control, things really heated up for second between Keller, Missler, Schroyer and Drown. The race would continue that way until five laps remaining when Schroyer would drive under Missler into third and past Keller for the runner-up spot a lap later.

Meanwhile Babcock continued to pull away until a caution for Stiltner spin on the white-flag lap would bunch up the field. As the white and green flew, Babcock went right back to the top shelf of the track to pull away for the win with Schroyer, Keller, Drown and Missler rounding out the top five.

Image
Brad Haudenschild – FAST 305 Sprints
In the make-up feature for the 305 sprints, Haudenschild would blast into the lead with Paige Polyak, Dustin Dinan, Brad Bowman, Jimmy Colvin and John Ivy in tow. Haudenschild set a torrid pace, encountering lapped traffic by the eighth circuit, allowing Polyak to close. By lap 10, Haudenschild had cleared traffic and began to pull away as Polyak was comfortably in second with Dinan and Jimmy Colvin racing hard for third. The first caution would fly with five laps remaining for a Steve Rando spin with the running order Haudenschild, Polyak, Colvin, Dinan, Bowman, D.J. Foos, John Ivy and Paul Weaver. A lap and another caution for Weaver who spun in turn two.

With a clear track, Haudenschild would pull away on the ensuing restart as Polyak had her hands full with Colvin. As the white flew, Nate Dussel made hard contact with the front stretch wall, bringing out the red. As the white and green flew on the restart, Haudenschild would pull away for the win with Colvin nipping Polyak for second and Dinan and Bowman rounding out the top five.

Image
Zack Kramer – 305 Sprints
In the night’s regular A-main for the 305 sprints, Kramer would take the early lead as John Ivy, Benny Bowman, Jason Keckler, Polyak, Weaver, Jake Trevino and Stuart Brubaker gave chase. Keckler would take third on lap two with Polyak into fourth and Weaver fifth. Polyak would drive into third a lap later as the caution flew for a Colvin spin. On the restart Polyak would drive around Ivy into second with Weaver right behind their rear bumpers in fourth. Kramer would blast around the outside of the track as Polyak, Ivy, Weaver, Brubaker and Keckler would follow. The caution would fly on lap 10 when Nate Dussel stopped trying to get off the track.

Again, with a clear track, Kramer would blast away from the field with Polyak, Weaver, Brubaker and Ivy battling for second. Ivy would spin on lap 14 with the running order Kramer, Polyak, Weaver, Brubaker, Trevino, Foos, Bowman and Keckler. On lap 19, Weaver would drive under Polyak for second. Kramer would encounter lapped traffic on lap 21, allowing Weaver to close as Polyak battled Brubaker, Trevino, Foos and a closing Bobby Clark. The final caution flew on lap 23 for Brad Bowman.

Kramer was just too strong on the restart as he powered away to the win with Weaver, Polyak, Brubaker and Trevino rounding out the top five.

Attica Raceway Park will take next weekend off for the annual fair and will return for Saturday racing the last three events of the season beginning Aug. 21 with the 410 sprints, late models, 305 sprints and dirt trucks in action.

Eckert Uses Backup Car, Overcomes Radiator Problem, Scores Exciting WoO Late Model Win At Attica; Chaney Nabs Attica FAST Win

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Rick Eckert displayed his cool even when nothing was going right for the York, Pennsylvania driver Friday, July 30 at Attica Raceway Park. After turning the fourth quick time, his car blew up! He really should have had a mechanic in Arvada inspect the vehicle for problems, or maybe he did but just pushed his car way too far.

Either way, the sudden turn of events ended up forcing him to the tail of his heat in a backup car. He had to race through the B-main to gain an 18th starting spot in the feature. Then, a hole in his radiator caused his crew to quickly change the water cooling device during a red flag, sending him to the tail. He then steadily worked his way to the front using the extreme bottom groove, passing Josh Richards with just three laps remaining to earn his second World of Outlaws Late Model victory of the season at Attica Raceway Park Friday, July 30.

“Scrub” Eckert used the extreme bottom groove throughout the 40-lap, $10,000 to win Cat A-main while most of the other competitors were blasting around the top in what can be described as one of the most unbelievable World of Outlaw Late model races so far in 2010.

Image”We had a really good car and that red flag came out and the crew said ‘hey are you parked on water?’ I said I don’t think so…I said see if it’s warm and they took the hood off and water was leaking out of the radiator…had a hole in the bottom core. I said let’s just go to the pits and there was a big crash so we’ll gain a few spots back. I said we got a car good enough to win and damn if we didn’t,” said Eckert beside his J&K Salvage, Raye Vest, All Star Performance, York Excavating Company backed #24. I wonder what kind of insurance they have on those cars. Speaking of insurance, if you’re interested in saving money on your car insurance, find out more here.

In the 410 sprint feature, Rob Chaney took the early lead, and then lost it to Brandon Martin in a tremendous three car battle involving Craig Mintz as well. A caution flag on lap 22 gave Chaney a clean shot on the high side to drive back by Martin and into the lead and he pulled away for the $3,000 prize.

“The caution came out just at the right time for me. Those guys were getting fast on the bottom and when I came up on the last cars they were throwing some dust up on the top and I really didn’t want to move and the caution came out when I needed it and got a clean track,” said Chaney beside his Bryan Grove owned, Canton Erectors backed #45.

At the drop of the green for the late model feature, Russell King powered into the lead with Gregg Satterlee, Matt Miller, Tim McCreadie, Josh Richards and Clint Smith in tow. King, who recorded a top 10 finish a few weeks earlier at Attica during the UMP Summer Nationals, would begin to pull away, as Miller moved into second on lap two, bringing McCreadie to third. By lap five, King lead Miller by half a straight away with sixth-starting Richards in third. There was a tremendous battle for fourth between McCreadie, Steve Francis, Satterlee, Smith and Lanigan.

King would hit lapped heavy lapped traffic by lap nine and escaped disaster on lap 11 when Mike Knight spun in front of him as he stopped to avoid a collision. On the restart, Richards would execute a daring move to drive between Miller and King to take the lead as McCreadie also went by Miller into third. McCreadie steadily pulled as King continued to run second with eighth-starting Lanigan moving into third by lap 15. The caution would fly on lap 22 when King drove off the track exiting turn two with the running order Richards, Lanigan, Miller, Satterlee and Shane Clanton.

On the restart, all hell broke lose as Richard drove from the top to the bottom out of turn four, everyone else checked up and that sparked a multi-car crash involving at least a dozen race cars on the front stretch with Chub Frank betting upside down. During the red, Eckert, who had worked his way up to 10th, went pit side with a broken radiator.

On the restart the running order was Richards, Lanigan, Francis, Clanton, McCreadie, Clint Smith and Tim Fuller. Richards could not shake Lanigan who continued to drive right up to his rear bumper with Francis, Clanton, McCreadie and Smith right there as well. With 20 laps to go, Richards continued to lead while Francis had moved into second. However, Francis would drive off the high side of turn two, losing several spots on lap 32, handing the runner-up spot back to Lanigan with Clanton third and Smith fourth.

King would bring out the final caution on lap 35. Richards led Lanigan, Clanton, Smith, McCreadie and Eckert. Richards again used the high line to pull away on the restart while Lanigan and Clanton battled for second with Smith trying to hold off the low-riding Eckert for fourth. The capacity crowd were on their feet, sensing something special was going to happen as Eckert continued to race the extreme bottom groove and moved into third on lap 38. With nine laps to go, it was now a three car battle for the lead between Richards, Lanigan and Eckert.

Rick Eckert – WoO Late Models
Eckert would dispose of Lanigan on lap 43 and began to hunt down Richards. With four laps to go, Eckert drove to Richards inside as they raced side by side to the flag stand. On the next circuit, Eckert powered off the bottom of turn four to take the lead. Eckert would drive away the last three laps for the win with Richards, Lanigan, Clanton and Smith rounding out the top five.

“I just got a good rhythm around the bottom there and got to where I could drive off really hard. And I got to fifth there and thought ‘that’s pretty good’ and I got to Darrell (Lanigan) and he raced me pretty hard and I got to Josh (Richards) and got my entry better and that helped my exit and that’s what it took,” added Eckert.

For Richards, it was a solid second place run.

“I always enjoy coming here. We were able to get up to the front early but I looked up on the board and saw #24 and I knew he came from the back and kept seeing someone stick their nose up under me. I was more comfortable just carrying my speed up top and keep my momentum up. But Rick was able to stick it on the bottom and make it work. I don’t know if I could have gone down there and stay in the front,” said Richards of Shinnston, W. Va. , the defending World of Outlaws champion beside his Rocket Chassis, Cornett Engines, Seubert Calf Ranches backed #1

For Union , Kentucky ‘s Lanigan, third broke a string of two straight World of Outlaw victories.

“We were a little loose there at the end. Rick had a good car and Josh was running awful well too, so to come home third we’ll be happy with it,” said Lanigan beside his Gottarace.com, X-treme Graphics, Port City Racing, Performance Rod and Custom, Rocket Chassis, Cornett Thunder backed late model. ”

ImageIn the 410 sprint main, Brandon Martin would grab the early lead over Sheldon Haudenschild, Chaney and Mark Keegan. While Martin worked the low line, Chaney would drive around Haudenschild into second on lap 2 and around Martin into the lead on lap four. Martin would continue to hound Chaney as Mark Keegan, Haudenschild, fifth-starter Craig Mintz, Dale Blaney and Chris Andrews followed. Keegan would challenge Martin for second as they followed in Chaney’s tire tracks.

Just as the leaders were set to hit lapped traffic, the caution would fly for a Duane Zablocki spin. On the restart, Chaney would fly up top with Martin still hugging the bottom with Mintz blasting around Keegan into third. On lap 14, Mintz would drive to Martin’s outside to grab second and was right on the rear bumper of Chaney. Martin was finding a rhythm on the bottom and soon it was a three-car battle for the lead.

Martin would regain the second spot on lap 19 with Mintz, Blaney, Keegan, Bryan Sebetto, Dean Jacobs, Phil Gressman, Haudenschild, and Byron Reed following. Martin would drive under Chaney to lead the 21st lap, but Chaney would drive back by for the top spot as the caution would fly on lap 22. On the restart, with a clean track in front of him, Chaney would drive away while Margin now had his hands full with Mintz and Blaney. Blaney would take third on lap 23 and steal second on lap 26, but he could not catch Chaney. Following Chaney to the checkered were Blaney, Mintz, Martin and Keegan.

Rob Chaney – FAST 410 Sprints
“We’ve just been working really well together. Bryan kind of puts his input in but he basically lets me do what I think and it’s working really well right now. When I was pushing up for the feature I was thinkin’ I’ve won a lot of races at different places but there’s nowhere harder to win than this race track,” said Chaney of his eighth career Attica victory.

As it was a Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title (FAST) Championship Series event, Keegan’s finish would eat into point leader Reed’s huge point lead ever so slightly as Reed would come home eighth.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, Aug. 6 with the FAST 410 sprints, UMP late models and Fremont Fence 305 Sprints. It will be a full card of racing as the remainder of the July 23 late model feature and the entire July 23 305 sprint feature that was rained out will also be contested.

Doug Drown Hoping To Pull Off Upset Win Against World of Outlaws Late Models

By Kevin Kovac -World of Outlaws Late Model Series PR Director

(Attica, OH) Doug Drown has a pretty good idea how he would feel if he were able to pull off an upset victory this Friday night (July 30) in the World of Outlaws Late Model Series event at Attica Raceway Park.

“I would probably be speechless,” said the 28-year-old driver from Wooster, Ohio. “Winning a World of Outlaws race would put us in a different group of regional racers. It would be unreal.”

Drown, of course, also happens to have a pretty good idea of how difficult it is to reach the finish line first in a WoO LMS A-Main. A driver has absolutely no room for error – a fact he learned first-hand when the national tour visited the one-third-mile Attica oval last year.

The talented young Buckeye State racer had an impressive night going during the 2009 program, qualifying second-fastest in time trials and finishing second in his heat to earn a berth in the feature redraw. But a critical mistake cost him dearly: he reported late to the A-Main lineup, forcing officials to demote him from the eighth starting spot to the rear of the field. His promising evening ended with a 23rd-place finish after he retired on lap 10 of the 50-lapper.

“That was real disappointing,” recalled Drown. “I was in the car and ready to go in the pits, but my guys had the car jacked up to change all four tires at the last minute and we ended up being late (to staging). In the end, it was the wrong decision too – we were too hard (with tire compound) and were absolutely horrible, and I just pulled off.

“If we had just left on (the tires) we were originally going to run, I think we could’ve at least run top-five. What we had on originally was what most of the top guys had on.”
Drown is hoping to avoid such hiccups in Friday’s WoO LMS show, which is topped by a 50-lap A-Main paying $10,000 to win. He enters the action confident that he can be a contender, having already won two weekly DIRTcar-sanctioned features this season at Attica and run well in his recent travels to WoO LMS and DIRTcar Summer Nationals shows.

“We’ve had a pretty good year – better than I ever expected it to be actually,” said Drown, who campaigns family-owned equipment. “We struggled a lot last year, so I didn’t come into this season with any expectations. But we’ve been running good almost everywhere we go and I’m looking forward to racing with the Outlaws.”

Drown is carving out a successful 2010 season with a relatively bare-bones effort. He has just a single ’09 Bernheisel Lazer Chassis and one engine at his disposal – and he hurt his Malcuit 430 cubic inch Ford powerplant in last month’s Firecracker 100 at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa., forcing him to borrow motors to keep racing until he gets his repaired piece back. Fellow racer D.J. Myers loaned him an engine to use during his recent two-week excursion on the DIRTcar Summer Nationals trail and he’s secured a 415 Ford motor from builder Brad Malcuit for this week’s WoO LMS Ohio-Pennsylvania Speedweek events.

“A lot of people think we have more (equipment) than we do,” said Drown, who also plans to enter Ohio-Pennsylvania Speedweek shows on July 27 at Central PA Speedway in Clearfield, Pa., July 28 at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio, and July 31 at Muskingum County Speedway in Zanesville, Ohio (where he’s won in the past). “We don’t have a lot, so we gotta take care of what we have to make it last.”

Drown does a pretty good job of that – and he has to since he’s effectively a fulltime race car driver this year. Back home living with his parents after a recent divorce and just 11 months removed from the fire that destroyed the Wooster restaurant he had been operating, Drown has demonstrated a renewed concentration on racing as well as thinking of attending autoshows, (like those in this article here.)

“I decided to take a couple years and focus on the goal of doing this racing deal fulltime,” said Drown, who is still waiting for help from his insurance company to rebuild his Country Harvest Restaurant. Unlike some aspects of car insurance (discussed in this article here) it can take a long time for those claims to be settled. “If we can get some more support next year we’d like to branch out and run a series regularly.”

Drown’s best opportunity to attract some major attention for his future endeavors is with Friday’s WoO LMS event at Attica, a track that’s rapidly become one of his favorites. His first start there came in May 2008 when the facility hosted the full-fender Outlaws for the first time and Drown recorded a career-best WoO LMS finish of sixth.

“I kind of fell in love with the place that night,” said Drown, whose top WoO LMS finish in five A-Main starts this year is a ninth in both of last month’s Firecracker 100 preliminary features at Lernerville. “It’s a great track for drivers and for fans. There’s usually a couple grooves, so you can start at the tail of a heat and still get up to the front.”

Drown will lead the army of regional and local racers against a star-studded field of Outlaws at Attica, including former WoO LMS champions Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., who won the tour’s 2008 A-Main at Attica, Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., and Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky.

The traveling WoO LMS roster also includes Tim Fuller of Watertown, N.Y., Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., Rick Eckert of York, Pa., Shane Clanton of Fayetteville, Ga., Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga., Russell King of Bristolville, Ohio, rookie sensation Austin Hubbard of Seaford, Del., Brent Robinson of Smithfield, Va., and rookie Jill George of Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Friday program, which also includes a $3,000-to-win feature for Attica’s weekly 410 Sprint Car division, is scheduled begin with hot laps shortly after 6 p.m. Gates are set to open at 4 p.m. and race time is 7:45 p.m.

Adult general admission is $30, ages 11-15 are $15 and kids 10-and-under will be admitted free of charge. Pit passes are $35.
