Shaffer Puts Lights Out On All Stars At Attica Raceway Park; Missler Claims Late Model Win; Dible Nabs Trucks

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Tim Shaffer put the lights out on the O”Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions and Attica Raceway Park Saturday, Sept. 4…figuratively and literally.

The Aliquippa, Pa. driver continues to be the hottest sprint car driver in the nation as he recorded his second straight All Star win in as many nights – he won Friday at Lernerville Speedway – taking the Baumann Auto Group/WNWO NBC Channel 24 Night Attica Ambush to wrap up the 2010 season at “ Ohio ’s Finest Racing” speedplant.

It wasn’t easy for “The Steel City Outlaw,” as a blown fuse doused the track’s front stretch lights with five laps to go. However, Shaffer would drive his Aaron Call/Janet Holbrook Motorsports machine away from the field on the restart for his 13th All Star victory of 2010. While the win was Shaffer’s 18th overall for the season, it was his first career All Star victory. Shaffer has won three features this season at Attica and eight over his career at the track.

“This is just a blast to drive. Hats off to my guys they just do a great, great job. It’s been an awesome month,” said Shaffer the Knoxville Nationals champion beside his Technique Roofing, JRC Transportation, J&J Auto Racing, Kistler Engines backed machine. “To have a month like we’ve had…the wins and the fun… the communication…it’s just been a blast.”

When the track’s lights went out with five to go, Shaffer said it reminded him of a race in Tulare , California . “I was leading the race then and I’ll tell you it gets your attention in a hurry,” added Shaffer. “When it goes out like that it’s black.”

Tim Shaffer – All Star Sprints
When the green fell for the 40-lap feature, last week’s Attica victor Lee Jacobs would grab the early lead over track champion Byron Reed, Dale Blaney, Greg Wilson Craig Mintz and Shaffer. Reed, who picked up two All Star wins at Attica in 2010, would drive into the lead exiting turn four on lap 7 while Jacobs battled Blaney and Shaffer for second.

The first caution would fly on lap 9 for a Brandon Wimmer spin with the running order Reed, Jacobs, Blaney, Shaffer, Mintz, Greg Wilson and Cap Henry. A lap later, Sheldon Haudenschild would spin, and Mark Keegan and Brandon Martin would tangle trying to avoid Haudenschild with Martin getting upside down.

On the restart Reed would drive back into a commanding lead with Jacobs in tow while Shaffer would drive around Blaney into third. Reed would hit lapped traffic by lap 15 with Shaffer moving into second with Jacobs, Blaney and Wilson rounding out the top five. It would remain that way until the half-way mark when Blaney would grab third. Shaffer was reeling in Reed and the duo would race side-by-side for two laps until Shaffer would drive to the outside of Reed, utilizing a lapped machine as a pick to take the lead on lap 25 with Blaney, Jacobs and David Gravel rounding out the top five.

On lap 35, the field was bunched up when the front stretch lights went out. Shaffer had six lapped machines between himself and Reed, with Blaney, Jacobs and Dewease rounding out the top five. Once the lights came back on, Shaffer would put the lights out on the rest of the field. The win is Shaffer’s 32nd career All Star victory, moving him into a tie with Danny Lasoski for 14th on the series’ all-time win list.

The win came aboard a car Shaffer is very fond of – it carried him to a streak of five consecutive victories during the All Star’s Thunder Through the Plains. However, he crashed the car at Huset’s Speedway , though repairs would net him a win that night.

“We bent the car a little so we put a new car together for Knoxville . Brian (Kemenah, crew chief) brought it home and took it to Mark Keegan for repairs. After Knoxville the guys put it back together and it’s still fast,” said Shaffer. “This year has been by far the best year and the most fun of my career and I’ve been home about every weekend.”

For Reed, who scored the only other two All Star victories at Attica in 2010, the second place finish was a great way to end the year.

“What can you say…the guy’s the best in the country right now. I actually did slow down as the race went on, but when he passed me I thought I was still going as good as I was when I thought I was unbeatable. But you have to be perfect to beat those guys…I was lucky to finish second,” said Reed beside his Reebar Diecasting, Schoenfeld Headers backed machine.

Ryan Missler – UMP Late Models
Bellevue, Ohio’s Ryan Missler scored his fourth win of the year in the Fultz Fabrications and Speed Shop UMP Late Model feature, leading all 25 laps. It wasn’t easy for the 2010 track champion, as he had to survive a rash of cautions late in the race. Following a first lap yellow for a Bill Clapp spin, Missler would rocket away from the field, lapping up to ninth place until the next caution would be displayed with 10 laps remaining when third place running Mike Bores looped it out. A lap and a caution, a lap and a caution, a lap and a caution would follow. Each time, Missler would drive his York Fabrications, J&H Concrete, Taze DJ Service., Quality Welding. Terry McConnell Excavating machine away from the field.

With seven laps remaining, the race finally got going again with Missler leading John Bores, Dan Wallace, Rocky Owens and Matt Irey. John Bores would drive off the banking in turns one and two on lap 22 for another caution with the running order now Missler Wallace, Mike Bores (from the tail), Owens and Larry Kingseed. A lap and another caution for Jamie Reed would give the competition one last shot at Missler, but he was too strong, driving away the final three laps for his fourth victory of the year with Wallace, Mike Bores, Kingseed and Owens rounding out the top five.

Missler had installed a new engine during the week and was pleased with its performance.

“The motor worked great…it was the transmission…we had problems. It jumped out of gear there…I had to cram it back in there but we got through it,” said Missler beside his Missler Industries, Keizer Wheels, Level Performance, Hawk’s Auto Reconditioning backed #50Y. “I owe it all to my guys. I wouldn’t be here if they weren’t in the shop with me every night. I have to thank Jerry Huff, Dave Gulick, my dad, my wife, Amber and everybody that comes out to the shop.”

Bob Dible – Dirt Trucks
In the Computer Man Dirt Trucks, Dible would lead all 15 laps for the win. It wasn’t easy for the Fostoria , Ohio driver, as he had to battle with Art Ball, Paul Brown Jr. and Dwight Waltermeier throughout, including several restarts. However, his truck was just too strong as he took his third win of the season over Brown, Waltermeier, Ball and 12th place starter John Ivy. It was Dible’s 7th career win at the track.

“I wasn’t moving off the top. Actually until he (Brown) showed me his nose on the white flag lap I didn’t know anybody was really that close. When I saw him I thought it was time to step on it a little more,” said Dible beside his Bob’s Machine Shop, BMS Engines backed #17. “I about spun it out on the last corner.”

Attica Raceway Park Wraps Up The 2010 Season With An Ambush Of All Stars

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Attica Raceway Park will close out the 2010 season in a big way Saturday, September 4th with the traditional Attica Ambush featuring the O’Reilly All Star Circuit of Champions sprint car series on the Baumann Auto Group/WNWO NBC Toledo Channel 24 Night.

2010 Knoxville Nationals Champion and defending All Star champion and current point leader Tim Shaffer, two-time All Star Champion Greg Wilson, Knoxville Nationals Rookie of the Year and Ohio Speedweek Champion David Gravel, All Star Rookies Cap Henry and Jared Ridge, as well as, veteran Bill Rose and more will take on Attica’s tough weekly competitors in the 410 sprint car division.

The last time the All Stars visited Attica Raceway Park was to kick-off the Ohio Sprint Speedweek at the end of June. Byron Reed, who recently picked up his sixth Attica Track Championship, scored the victory over 12-time Attica Champion Mark Keegan and Dean Jacobs who also recorded a win at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” speedplant in 2010. Reed also defeated the All Stars at Attica earlier in the year at the traditional Spring Nationals and looks to make it a sweep on Saturday night.

Stevie Smith took the Attica Ambush win in 2009, while Dale Blaney picked up the victory in 2008.

The All Star drivers will also have their hands full with 2009 Fremont/Attica Sprint Title Champion Craig Mintz, Bryan Sebetto, and Rob Chaney and Lee Jacobs who have recorded wins at Attica in 2010.

“The Steel City Outlaw” Tim Shaffer will also be available to sign autographs for fans from 4:00-5:00 pm behind the main grandstands. Also, Dwight Allen’s “Racing World” will be having a tailgate party from 4:00-5:00 pm and encourages fans to stop by and do some “bench racing.”

Jacobs Takes Attica 410 Win, Reed Wins 6th Track Crown; Muntz Tames 305 Sprints, Foos Earns 1st Title; Missler Takes Late Model Win & Track Title; Waltermeier Gets Truck Win, Arnold Nabs Championship

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) It’s been a frustrating season for Dalton, Ohio’s Lee Jacobs. But the 410 sprint driver known as “The Snowman” put that all behind him by dominating the Kistler Racing Products Season Championship Night at Attica Raceway Park on Saturday, Aug. 28.

While Jacobs led all 30 laps for the feature win, Byron Reed’s third place finish earned him his sixth track championship. For Jacobs, it was his fourth career victory at Attica.

In the Fultz Fabrications and Speed Shop UMP Late Models, Bellevue, Ohio’s Ryan Missler came into the night needing only a 12th place or better feature finish to claim his second consecutive track title. He put all doubts behind him by leading the last 24 laps of the feature to claim his third victory of the season and the championship.

Fremont, Ohio’s Josh Muntz led all 25 laps to earn his first career Attica victory in the Fremont Fence 305 Sprints, but the chase to the track championship came down to the last lap. D.J. Foos was able to finish seventh in the feature, and coupled with Paul Weaver’s fifth place run gave Foos the title by just a handful of points.

Wayne, Ohio’s Dwight Waltermeier took the lead on lap five and never looked back on route to his second feature win of the season in the Computer Man Dirt Trucks. Tiffin , Ohio ’s Brian Arnold’s fourth place finish earned him his first ever track championship.

Lee Jacobs – FAST 410 Sprints
“This is a huge bounce-back for our team. We made some changes here the past week and we really clicked tonight,” said Jacobs beside his Randy and Lisa Hammer owned, Hammer Pallets, Classic Turning, Berlin Bakery backed #24h.

“I didn’t even know where victory lane was…it’s been so long since I’ve won a race I didn’t know if I was going to get another one,” joked Jacobs. “Tonight was amazing. I wish we wouldn’t have had so many cautions because that old man in that X car (Mark Keegan) he was making things pretty interesting on those restarts. Mark Keegan is one of the best drivers in our state. He did a hell of a job…it’s an honor to race with him like that. Mark was making me nervous on those restarts. I knew I had to keep switching up my starts in three and four and kind of moved around trying different lines to screw him up. The last two restarts I didn’t see him so we must have done something right. I knew the top was the place to be. Aaron and Randy Hammer and Timmy Pierce…those guys did an incredible job with the car tonight.”

For Monclova , Ohio ’s Reed, the championship marked his fifth in the last six years.

“It was a good race…my car was really good. It’s tough when you start ninth behind a lot of good guys it’s tough to pass,” said Reed beside his Reebar Diecasting, ProShocks, Schoenfeld Headers, Weld Wheels backed #5. “I love this track…you couldn’t ask for better track preparation all year. Everyone asked why I was doing to good here this year and track preparation is probably the key. It’s been multi-grooved and elbows up race track all season and that makes me go good and that’s what the fans like.”

Reed’s run also takes him one step closer to winning the Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title (FAST) championship with just one point race remaining, that September 11th at Fremont Speedway.

Ryan Missler – UMP Late Models
Missler’s victory in the late model feature wasn’t easy as he had to hold off a hard charging Doug Drown late in the going. He changed his line on a late race restart and Drown slipped off the track with five laps remaining.

“The car was so good except there at the end, the right rear started going away,” said Missler beside his York Fabrication, Terry McConnell Excavating, Taze D.J. Services backed #50Y. “I didn’t know where Drown was. I saw he got up to second…don’t know what happened to him; he must have dumped it off the track. There was a little like bump going into turn three and I’d hit that and it would upset the car so I just tried to stay away from that thing.

“I have to thank everyone on my crew. Jerry Huff, my wife Amber, Dave Gullick, dad and everyone that helps out on the car all year,” added Missler beside his Quality Welding, Cenpeco Oil, J&H Concrete, Bellevue Beverage Center backed late model.

Muntz had to hold off Bobby Clark following a caution with just two laps remaining to claim the 305 sprint feature.

“The car was awesome. I was so nervous before the race. Everyone was like you need to calm down. You don’t know how hard it is to be calm when you’re trying to set the car up yourself and you have to go out there and start on the pole,” said Muntz beside his WOW Epoxy Floors, Pepsi, Wal-Mart, Rison Enterprises, Muntz Equipment Rebuild, Kear’s Speed Shop backed M28. “I saw Bobby tuck under me on those restarts but the top of the track was awesome and the car was beautiful. I have to thank my little daughter here…she turns one next Tuesday and this is the first race she’s ever been too. What a way to end the season here at Attica.”

Foos came into the night as the point leader, but defending track champion Paul Weaver was right on his tail. A caution with seven laps remaining saw Weaver running fourth and Foos in the eighth spot, which would have given Weaver the title. Foos would move into the sixth spot with three laps remaining just as the caution flew, giving him the point lead. On the restart, Foos fell back to seventh, moving Weaver into the championship. As the checkered came out, Nate Dussel was able to get around Weaver, dropping him to fifth, while Foos passed John Ivy for a seventh place finish to claim the title.

“I bounced off the wall coming to the white and I thought man here it goes I just lost it. That’s why you never give up and dig and dig and dig,” said Foos beside his Burger King, Level Performance, Buckshot Farms, Pit Stop Carryout, R&R Used Cars backed #11F. “I kept counting cars and I thought man he’s going to be hard to catch. Then the car just came alive halfway through the race and it just took off. I knew I had something to work with then.”

Waltermeier ran the top shelf of the track to perfection for the dirt truck victory.

“It’s fun up there. You have to keep it straight, you can’t get sideways up there,” said Waltermeier beside his Mitchelle Agronomics, Graham Racing Engines, CA Kustoms backed #39. “I have to thank my crew. My brother D.J. and crew chief John and my wife and all these guys that show up to root me on.”

When Bob Dible got into trouble early in the dirt truck feature, Brian Arnold just had to finish strong, which he did for the track title.

“It’s unfortunate that Bob got spun out or what ever happened. Our goal this year was to win a track championship here…this is the only place we’ve run so far this year,” said Arnold beside his Make-A-Wish Foundation, Burns Electric, Air Cooled Engines backed #33. “The truck got pretty bent up tonight but it was worth it.”

At the drop of the green for the 410 sprint feature, Lee Jacobs quickly bolted into the lead with Brad Haudenschild, Mark Keegan, Brandon Wimmer and Shawn Valenti in tow. Keegan would grab second a lap later while Jacobs pulled away. Haudenschild would bring out the caution with two laps in with the running order Lee Jacobs, Keegan, Wimmer, Phil Gressman, Valenti and Reed. Greg Wilson would stop on the track on lap eight to bring out another caution and wipe out Jacobs’ big lead.

On the restart Wimmer would drive under Keegan for second with Gressman fourth and Reed up to fifth. Gressman would take third on lap 11 as Jacobs continued to pull away in the lead. Sheldon Haudenschild would spin on lap 15 to slow the action with Jacobs, Wimmer, Gressman, Keegan and Reed rounding out the top five. Jacobs once again pulled away on the ensuing restart as Wimmer and Gressman battled for second. Gressman would move into the runner-up spot on lap 17 with Keegan taking third from Wimmer on the next circuit.

Meanwhile, Jacobs was rim-riding to a commanding lead while Gressman and Keegan put on a great show for second and Wimmer and Reed battled for fourth. Cap Henry and Mike Linder would tangle on lap 20, bringing out another caution. Again on the restart Jacobs would pull away with Gressman, Keegan, Wimmer and Reed rounding out the top five. Keegan would drive around Gressman into second on lap 24, but could not close on Jacobs. Reed would drive into fourth on lap 23 and took third with five laps remaining. Haudenschild would coast to a stop on lap 27, giving Keegan one final shot at Jacobs. However, Jacobs was too strong and pulled away for the win with Keegan, Reed, Gressman and Rob Chaney rounding out the top five.

In the 25-lap late model feature, Dan Wallace would grab the early lead over Missler, Bill Hahn, Keith Berner and Matt Irey. Missler would drive into the lead a lap later, bringing Hahn and Berner into second and third. The first caution would fly on lap 4 for Bill Clap with the running order, Missler, Berner, Hahn, Wallace and Rocky Owens. Missler would pull away on the restart while Berner, Hahn and Owens locked in a great battle for second. The caution would fly on lap 7 for Jeff Esbenshade, but Missler would again pull away when the green came back out.

Another caution with 10 laps in the books for debris had the running order of Missler, Berner, Hahn, Owens, Wallace and a closing Doug Drown who started 12th. With 12 laps in, Missler continued to lead over Berner, Hahn, Owens, Wallace and Drown. Clapp would stop on the track on lap 13 to bring out the caution just as Drown moved into fifth, bringing Larry Kingseed to sixth. On the restart, Missler could not shake Berner while Drown drove into third. With 10 laps remaining, Drown drove under Berner into second and was closing quickly on Missler. The final caution of the event would fly on lap 18 when Ken Hahn and Jeremy Canada tangled.

On the restart Missler would again hit his marks on the top side of the track with Drown pressuring and Berner, Owens and 15th place starter Mike Bores in tow. Drown’s bid for the win would end on lap 20 when he slipped off the top side of turn four, losing four positions. Missler still could not shake Berner as Bores took third on lap 21 with Owens and Kingseed rounding out the top five. Missler would drive to the checkered over Berner, Bores, Owens, and Kingseed.

Josh Muntz – FAST 305 Sprints
In the 25-lap 305 sprint feature, Muntz would also drive to the top of the track to take the lead with Jake Trevino, Bobby Clark, Dan Hammond and Nate Dussel in tow. Clark would grab second a lap later and would race right on Muntz’ rear bumper while Trevino, Zack Kramer and Hammond would round out the top five. The first caution would fly on lap 11 for a Junior Felver spin with the running order Muntz, Clark , Trevino, Kramer and 10th place starter Paul Weaver. On the restart Muntz and Clark would drive away as Trevino, Kramer, Weaver and Dussel locked in a tremendous battle for third.

The caution would be displayed on lap 17 when Brad Bowman and Dan Hammond lost power. Again on the restart, Muntz and Clark would drive nose to tail away from Trevino with Weaver, Dussel, Kramer, Steve Rando and D.J. Foos in tow. The car on the move was John Ivy who had steadily worked his way up from his 16th starting spot and was seventh with six laps remaining.

Muntz would continue to hit his marks perfectly with Clark right on his tail. Trevino was comfortably in third while Weaver, Dussel, Kramer, Ivy and Foos racing hard for fourth. The field would be bunched up one final time when Nate Reeser spun with just two laps remaining. Muntz was able to drive away for the victory over Clark, Trevino with Dussel passing Weaver for fourth on the last lap.

Waltermeier would drive into the lead on lap five with Roelle holding off Brewer and Weichman. With five laps to go, the truck on the move was Cory Ward who had moved from 12th to third. Waltermeier would drive off to the win over Roelle, Ward, Arnold and Brian Sorg.

Computer Man Inc. Dirt Trucks:
Brian Arnold leads, Bob Dible must win or finish 2 spots higher than Arnold. Dwight Waltermier, Steve Endicott, Dan Hennig & Alex Weichman all still have a chance.
