Danny Smith Gets Attica FAST Win, First Since 2010 Back Surgery; Henry Stays Undefeated In Late Models; Dussel Scores 305 Sprint Win

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Danny Smith couldn’t wait to get to the Engine Pro Victory Lane at Attica Raceway Park . The Chillicothe , Ohio driver wanted to thank all of the fans who sent him money and cards and words of encouragement after he broke his back at the track on June 18, 2010 in a vicious crash.

He got that opportunity Friday on Fisher Performance/Merrill Lynch/Construction Equipment and Supply Night, leading all 30 laps of the O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 Sprint feature for his 10th career Attica victory. Smith made some daring moves in lapped traffic, splitting two cars in turns three and four on several occasions to take the Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title (FAST) Championship Series sanctioned event.

“I finally get the opportunity to stand here and thank all you great fans from Ohio…heck, all the fans from across the United States and Australia who sent me money and cards and supported me and my family when I couldn’t race,” said Smith, grinning from ear to ear beside his J&D Performance, Dean Knittle & Sons Auto, Smalley Excavating, Kiger Signs backed #4. “You people will never know how much it meant to me. It was one of my goals this year to get at least one win so I could stand out here and thank everyone.”

“I have to thank my wife, Stephanie…she’s a nurse and she took great care of me. I’m not 100 percent in shape yet, but I feel great and this really helps,” Smith added. “It’s been since 1995 since I won here and I wanted this bad tonight. Everything went our way…I got a good pill draw for the heat and a good starting spot in the feature.”

Ada, Ohio ’s Jon Henry is perfect no longer at Attica . “The Steel Driver” started ninth in his heat and finished second. Prior to that, he had won every race at Attica that he competed in – 3 heats and 3 features. He did, however, work his way forward from his 12th place starting spot in Friday’s feature, taking the lead on lap 17. Henry went on to score his fourth straight victory in the Fultz Fabrications and Speed Shop UMP Late Models – there have been no other late model feature winners at the track in 2011.

“With Rusty (Schlenk) starting up front, I was just shooting for a top five. At the start of race I knew I had to keep my nose clean…I know I had a fast race car. I stayed to the bottom and when we got to sixth I just stayed focused and said I can pick one off at a time…the car was just awesome,” said Henry beside his Wide Open Graphics. Eibach Springs, K&N Filters backed #15.

“I hope we’re turning some heads. We do this all out of our own pocket…I do everything I can to support everyone who supports me. I have to thank my dad and John McClain for everything they’ve done to help me. I encourage fans to go to jonhenryracing.com and the ‘share the experience.’ That’s where I’m building a lot of my demographics and I’m excited to see all the fans watching the videos and seeing some of the exciting racing. It’s a way to bring more fans to the tracks,” added Henry.

Last week at Fremont Speedway, Bradner, Ohio ’s Nate Dussel looked like he had a feature win locked up, only to catch a rut and nearly flip, costing him the race. He admitted he beat himself up over the incident all week, but he was able to put it behind him and came to Attica determine to reward his crew for their hard work. That he did, leading all 25 laps of the Fremont Fence 305 Sprint feature to score his second career victory at “Ohio ’s Finest Racing” speedplant.

“I felt horrible all week…my guys give me such a great race car and I screwed that up. I was determined not to let them down tonight,” said Dussel beside his Berrier Fabrication, Dussel Welding, Kistler Racing Products, Gressman Powersports, Design Graphics Group sponsored #1.

It wasn’t easy for Dussel as veteran Paul Weaver closed in with 8 laps to go. But a caution gave Dussel a clear track and clean air and he pulled away for the win.

“I don’t know what it is with these Goodyear tires, but when they warmed up I started to slip a little. But they cooled down on that caution and they got grip again. I was just trying to be careful…maybe a little too careful there late in the race because the high line was going away fast in turn four,” added Dussel.

In the 30-lap 410 sprint feature, Smith, who recently turned 54 years of age, got the jump on pole-sitter Byron Reed and grabbed the lead with youngster Travis Philo, Rob Chaney, Cole Duncan and Brandon Martin in tow. Smith was able to pull away slightly while Reed had his hands full with an impressive Philo while Chaney, Duncan and Martin waged a tremendous battle for fourth. Smith would catch lapped traffic by lap 11, but Reed, still battling Philo, couldn’t close as Chaney, Martin, Duncan and Bryan Sebetto continued to race hard for fourth.

At the half-way mark, Smith, who had made several daring moves, splitting lapped machines, continued to hold a comfortable lead over Reed, Philo, Martin, Duncan, Chaney and a surging defending World of Outlaws champion Jason Meyers. With 10 laps to go, Smith led Reed who had put some distance between himself and Philo who was not battling Martin, Duncan and Meyers for third. Martin would move into the third with five laps remaining, bring Meyers into fourth.

While Smith cruised, the battle for second was a dandy between Reed, Meyers and Martin as they swapped the position at nearly every turn, often times narrowly averting disaster as they came close to making contact. At the checkered, Smith had a three car-length advantage as Meyers executed a last corner pass for second with Reed, Martin and Sebetto rounding out the top five.

Fultz UMP Late Models – Jon Henry #15
In the 25-lap late model feature, 2010 UMP National Late Model champion Rusty Schlenk would grab the lead at the drop of the green with Troy Cattarene, Jeff Babcock, Jeremy Canada and Chris Keller in tow. Cattarene would spin after a lap was in the books, moving Babcock into second and Keller up to third. Another caution on lap three would bunch up the field, with Schlenk now trying to hold off Babock and Keller with Dusty Moore, Canada, Casey Noonan and Henry – up to 7th from 12th in just three laps – in tow.

Schlenk couldn’t shake the field as Babock and Keller ran side-by-side right on his rear bumper. Keller would take second on lap 7 and would continue to hound Schlenk. Meanwhile, Henry used the extreme bottom groove to move into fourth by lap eight and patiently watched the great battle for second between Keller and Babcock. Henry drove by both on lap 13 to take second with Keller and Babcock not giving up easily.

At the half-way mark, Henry raced under Schlenk to challenge for the lead with Keller and Babcock running right in their tire tracks. Henry would drive under Schlenk exiting turn four on lap 17 to take the lead in a race that went non-stop following the lap three caution. Henry drove away for the win with Schlenk holding off Keller for second, followed by Babcock and Noonan rounding out the top five. Defending Attica champion Ryan Missler also put on a driving display, coming from 16th starting spot to finish sixth.

Fremont Fence 305 Sprints – Nate Dussel #1
Dussel got the jump over Jimmy Colvin to grab the lead at the drop of the green of the Fremont Fence 305 Sprint feature with Weaver, Matt Merrill, Paige Polyak, Dustin Dinan and Josh Muntz in tow. Dussel began to build a comfortable lead while Colvin waged a tremendous battle for second with Weaver, who took the spot on lap eight. Dussel would encounter lapped traffic by lap 11, but Weaver couldn’t close as Colvin, Polyak and Stuart Brubaker put on an exciting battle for third.

With 10 laps to go, Weaver had inched his way forward, closing quickly on Dussel who seemed to be losing ground in turns three and four. The only caution of the event would fly on lap 17 as one of the cars caught an infield tractor tire, slinging it onto the track. On the restart Dussel drove away, building an 8 car length lead over Weaver as Colvin, Brubaker and Polyak continued to wage a furious battle for third. With three laps to go, once again Weaver had closed on Dussel, but it was too little too late. Colvin, Brubaker and Polyak would round out the top five.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, May 6 for the 305 Engine Builders Challenge on R&R Auto Wrecking Night. The UMP late models and Computer Man Dirt Trucks will also be in action.

4.22.11 Races Rained Out

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Steady rains have caused Attica Raceway Park officials to cancel racing for Friday, April 22.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, April 29 on Fisher Performance/Merrill Lynch/Construction Equipment & Supply Night. All scouts who wear their uniforms will get in free. And, there will be an open pit time for fans to go in and meet the drivers and crews and Attica Raceway Park will hand out free race programs.

It will be the first Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title (FAST) race of the season at ARP for the O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 Sprints. The Fultz Fabrications and Speed Shop UMP Late Models and Fremont Fence 305 Sprints will also be in competition.

2011 FAST Sprints Season To Begin Soon

The 2011 Kistler Racing Products Fremont/Attica Sprint Title (F.A.S.T.) Championship Series presented by Engine Pro & PAC Valve Springs is about to push off in grand fashion. The quest for the Kistler Cup kick-offs with a pair of $3,000 to win events over Easter weekend for the 410 sprint car division in Northern Ohio. The feature events at Attica Raceway Park and Fremont Speedway will also start 22 cars, two more than the usual 20. Drivers have their sights set on the $10,000 to win championship, but 12 grueling weeks lie ahead over the upcoming summer months to ultimately decide who will be named the 2011 F.A.S.T. Champion.

Going into its third season of operations, the F.A.S.T. Series has distributed more than $150,000 in cash, prizes, and contingency awards to local sprint car teams. Also, increased exposure has been brought to the area through the hard work of a group of fans from the stands at the two area dirt tracks. Recently it was announced that a $3,000 cash bonus would be given out to any 410 driver that can sweep the F.A.S.T. championship, the Attica Raceway Park championship and the Fremont track championship. This will be a tough feat to accomplish as many outsiders have described Attica and Fremont as one of the toughest weekend packages in the country.

Attica Raceway Park will kick off the F.A.S.T. season this coming Friday, April 22nd, with the 410 sprint cars competing in the first of six $3,000 to win events in 2011. Byron Reed was a dominant force last season at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” speed plant and picked up three of his five F.A.S.T. feature wins at the 1/3-mile semi banked clay oval located inside the Attica Fairgrounds. That success was the launching pad for the “Monclova Missile” en route to claiming his first career F.A.S.T. Kistler Cup, as well as picking up his 6th Attica Raceway Park track championship in the process.

Fremont Speedway will host its first F.A.S.T. event of the season on Saturday, April 23rd, which will also serve as the opening event for the speedway’s 60th year of racing. The end of last year saw 2009 F.A.S.T. Champion Craig Mintz rise above the competition and pick up the final two 410 sprint car features contested at “The Track That Action Built.” The late season charge by the #09 Top Gun Enterprises entry solidified the team’s first career Fremont Speedway track championship and brought them a third place finish in the F.A.S.T. standings behind Reed and Mark Keegan.

The fierce Northern Ohio sprint car competition that produced 13 different feature winners and only 3 multiple feature winners in 2010 will continue into the new year as teams regroup after a lethargic start to the season thanks to Mother Nature’s constant rain, snow, wind, and cold weather.

Here’s a look at some of the contenders competing in the 2011 Kistler Racing Products Fremont/Attica Sprint Title Championship Series:

Byron Reed #5 – Some bad racing luck has the B&S Racing team retooling a bit early on heading into the start of the Kistler Racing Products F.A.S.T. season. After engine woes on opening night and catching a rut and flipping while leading the Attica Spring Nationals, the “Monclova Missile” is ready to reclaim his 2010 dominance. Reed led the F.A.S.T. Kistler Cup point standings nearly the entire season after a hot start. An odds-on favorite whenever the team unloads at Attica or Fremont, the Pro Shocks, Black Swamp Media Group backed #5 is poised to repeat in 2011.

Craig Mintz #09 – A chassis change over the off-season for this Gibsonburg, Ohio native has the Top Gun Enterprises, Real-Geese, Ti22 Performance backed #09 team hoping for big things in 2011. While his F.A.S.T. title defense ended up a little short, he did collect the lucrative 2010 Fremont Speedway track championship for the first time adding his name to a long list of racing legends. The change to GF1 Chassis by Ti22 has made the team fast right out of the gate with Mintz claiming the 3rd place finish on opening night at Attica.

Phil Gressman #53 – Emotions are running high for the Genzman Racing Enterprises, Ludwig Propane, Kear’s Speed Shop backed #53 team after the loss of local racing legend & car owner De Genzman leading up to the start of race season. Gressman was strong out of the box in 2010 and picked up a feature win early on at Attica helping him become a fixture inside the top-10 throughout the season. Some costly crashes over the hot summer stretch dug the team into a hole, but they resurrected the season and finished inside the top-5 in points. “The Ohio Gasman” will be on the hammer with his sights set on the 2011 Kistler Cup title.

Dean Jacobs #97 – The team’s 2011 plans are not yet confirmed, but Wooster, Ohio’s “Deano” Jacobs is always a threat whenever the team unloads to race and no matter where the team starts the feature you cannot count them out of possibly visiting Engine Pro Victory Lane. The show in 2010 was the Northwest Ohio Towing & Recovery, NAPA Truck Center backed #97 as Dean piloted his machine to numerous hard charger awards and two feature wins during F.A.S.T. nights as the yellow blur passed more cars than anyone during F.A.S.T. competition, earning Dean the “Golden Steering Wheel” award at the Series banquet.

Bryan Sebetto #16 – The Fremont, Ohio native returns to the seat of the famous Burmeister Racing #16 in 2011. After an injury-plagued season in 2009, Sebetto was back behind the wheel full-time in 2010 and earned a top-10 finish in points. “Flipper,” as he’s known around the Northern Ohio pits, collected one feature win, but was a constant threat at Fremont on Saturdays. Some tough luck at Attica late in the season left many ‘what ifs’ to answer. The show for the fans is usually watching Sebetto fearlessly muscle around the high side at both of the 1/3-mile clay ovals.

Todd Heller #14 – This Whitehouse, Ohio driver dedicated his team’s attention to the F.A.S.T. schedule in 2010 and it paid off at season’s end as the Heller Racing #14 entry collected a top-10 finish in points. A seasoned veteran at Fremont Speedway and Attica Raceway Park, Heller has collected numerous top-5 finishes including a win at “The Track That Action Built” over the course of his career. He’ll be looking for more in 2011.

Kevin Lee #3J – “The Sulfur City Outlaw” and 3J Motorsports enter their third season of 410 sprint car racing together with car owner Jason Deel. The JD Automotive, Papa Jimmies BBQ & Pizza team has started strong out of the box in 2011 with back-to-back top-10 finishes in Attica’s first two feature events. The Green Springs, OH based #3J team has been on the verge of a victory for two years and after off-season thoughts of selling out all of their equipment, Deel and Lee are back looking for victory lane in 2011.

Mike Linder #312 – Mike Linder himself will be the first to tell you that 2010 was a disappointing season as the R&R Auto Wrecking, Linder’s Speed Equipment backed #312 failed to visit victory lane at either Fremont or Attica. The Fremont, OH based team did finish strong and launched themselves back into the top-10 in F.A.S.T. Kistler Cup points. Look for the #312, which is celebrating 50 years in racing with the legendary Linder family, to be on a mission for redemption in 2011.

Shawn Valenti #28- The 2010 KS Sales & Service/Cub Cadet FAST Rookie of the Year winner enters his sophomore season behind the wheel of a 410 sprint car. A rocky start to the 2011 season for the Risingsun, OH native saw the ECI Inc./ Kistler Racing Products backed #28 getting upside down on opening night at Attica. The team is looking ahead to the start of F.A.S.T. points racing.

Jody Keegan #60 – Clyde, Ohio’s Jody Keegan collected a handful of top-10 finishes in 2010 and showed great improvement behind the wheel of the Top Flight Kennel, Fred Wolf Auctions backed #60. The Keegan Motorsports team looks to power to the front this season after showing signs of greatness in 2010 before bad luck reared its ugly head. The Keegan name lives on in sprint car racing in Northern Ohio.

Duane Zablocki #9Z – “The Z Man” hails from Tiffin, OH and is among a select fraternity of drivers that have competed in every F.A.S.T. event held at Fremont and Attica in 2009 and 2010. Duane is a young driver who has shown that he can compete with the bigger budget teams, but a combination of bad luck and conservative racing has kept the family owned operation from showing what they are capable of. The Zablocki Construction, Distel’s Septic Services backed #9Z looks to build on experience and start claiming those top-10 finishes they are capable of.

The Hot Shot Engine Heater F.A.S.T. Rookie of the Year Contenders:

Brad Haudenschild #10 – Son of Ed Haudenschild and nephew of the “Wild Child” Jac Haudenschild, Brad enters his first full-season behind the wheel of a 410 sprint car. Known for putting on a show in the 305 sprint car ranks the Fredericksburg, Ohio native is ready for the challenges that lie ahead with more horsepower at his disposal.

Brad Bowman #51 – The Cleveland Golf, Srixon Golf Balls backed #51 is moving up the sprint car ladder in 2011. Bowman, from Shelby, OH, is familiar with Engine Pro Victory Lane in the 305 sprint car ranks and looks to improve each time he is pushed off to enjoy the thrill of victory in a 410 sprint car.

Invading the Northern Ohio area this weekend will be Miranda Throckmorton from Avon, Indiana. The 19-year old sensation and her M&W Aluminum Products backed #22 looks to make the tow if Mother Nature provides a positive forecast. Kody Kinser, son of Kelly Kinser, will also be watching the weather forecast and looks to make the tow to Northern OH from his Bloomington, IN home base. Jac Haudenschild and son Sheldon Haudenschild will also be in attendance this weekend competing against one another. With $3000 on the line each night, the car counts are expected to be high as the All Stars also have the weekend off from their 2011 schedule. Many of the traveling teams call Attica and Fremont home and will increase the level of competition if they show up to try to collect the loot.

A familiar face will be missing from the tracks, however, as local legend Mark Keegan has hung up his helmet and retired from sprint car racing. The impact that Keegan had on Northern Ohio sprint car racing dwarfs that of any other competitor. He made an impact on the track, helping local teams repair their cars to get back on the track, and was part of the group that brought racing back to the Attica Fairgrounds over 20-years ago. Mark was able to go out in grand fashion by collecting yet another feature win in 2010 at Attica and walks away on his own terms as one of the top drivers in the history of both local tracks. The “X” car will be truly missed by the fans and competitors.

2011 FAST Championship Series Adds Bonus Cash

The Kistler Racing Products Fremont/Attica Sprint Title (F.A.S.T.) Championship Series presented by Engine Pro & PAC Valve Springs continues to grow and increase the level of cash and prizes that will be awarded to the 410 sprint car teams of Northern Ohio. The promoters of Attica Raceway Park and Fremont Speedway have already stepped up in 2011 to add six $3000 to win FAST events that will increase the field to 22 cars and pay $250 to start. FAST has just reached an agreement with both tracks to secure a $3000 cash bonus to any driver who is able to win the FAST title, the Attica track championship, and the Fremont track championship in 2011. This feat would bring the FAST Champion’s cash total to $13,000 in addition to the cash payout from both track point funds.

“We had meetings over the winter with both track promoters and did a little brainstorming on how to make this FAST Series stand out more,” says Bryan Autullo of the FAST organization. “I think that these $3000 to win shows are a great step toward what we would like to accomplish, especially with starting 22 cars in the A-main on those nights. That is going to help a couple of guys out at the pay window who would have had to load up early and watch from the stands.”

The FAST Series was founded with the intention of helping the race teams who frequent these two Northern Ohio speed plants by injecting more money into their pockets through increased sponsorship and additional promotion. Now in the third year of operation, FAST has been able to establish a program that works for the teams, the tracks, and the sponsors who support it. Most importantly it has given local race fans something extra to call their own and follow all season long.

“The other thing we wanted to do,” Autullo continued, “is have the three organizations put up $1000 each toward securing a $3000 cash bonus to sweep the two track titles and the FAST Championship in 2011.” Winning both track championships is no easy task with the level of weekly competition and the two tracks are entirely different. In more than 20 years since Attica opened, this task has only been accomplished by Mark Keegan (who is now retired) and Byron Reed who will be defending his 2010 FAST Championship title. “By pumping more money into the promotion of this Series it is going to help to attract more teams to this area and increase the entertainment value for the weekly fans,” claims Autullo.

In addition to the influx of cash in 2011, the FAST organization has been working with series contingency sponsors to provide products and prizes for the 2011 year end awards banquet. Nearly $12,000 worth of prizes will be awarded to the Top 10 finishers in FAST Series points in 2011. This nearly triples the amount of prizes award in 2009 and 2010.
“We’re fortunate to have such great people working with is,” says Autullo. “In addition to all of our cash sponsors, our contingency award sponsors have stepped up to the plate this season with all kinds of products that these teams can use. They know who their core market is and want to give something back to the teams who buy their products all year long.”
