Sebetto Blasts To Attica FAST Win; Schlenk’s Changes Pay Off For Late Model Win; Dussel Avoids Disaster For 305 Victory

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Some times it takes awhile for a driver and mechanic to gel. For Bryan Sebetto and his new Hammer Pallets 410 sprint car team, it only took a month.

Sebetto, the 2011 Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title (FAST) Champion, took the lead from Craig Mintz on lap 19 after a great side-by-side battle over several laps, and went on to score his fourth career victory at Attica Raceway Park Friday on True Value of Woodville/Construction Equipment & Supply Night.

It was the first night of the Kistler Racing Products F.A.S.T Chmapionship Series presented by Engine Pro and KS Sales and Service at Attica.

“Last week at Fremont, I tried to set the car up and it was horrible. So tonight I let Aaron (Hammer) and the guys set it up. Then, before we went out to the feature, I was thinking about changing some things and decided to stick with what they gave me and it was awesome. Aaron and I are starting to get on the same page,” said Sebetto beside his JLH General Contractors, R3 Nutrition, Crown Battery Gressman Powersports, Keizer Wheels, OC Shocks backed #24h. “This car was so good…when I got to Craig (Mintz) and saw he had his wing all the way back and I hadn’t even touched mine, I knew I was going to be better. I could almost flat-foot it around here. I could get a great run through one and two and that allowed me to pass a lot of cars down the back stretch.”

“I have to thank Randy and Lisa Hammer for giving me this opportunity. I have a lot of confidence in this team right now,” said Sebetto who road the high line around the slick but fast speedway.

In the Sunoco American Late Model Series $3,000 to win event, Rusty Schlenk and Jon Henry put on a tremendous show for the fans, as the two battled hard throughout the 30-lap affair. It was a red flat when Chris Ross tore down a large section of the front stretch fence (he was okay) with 7 laps to go, that proved to be the difference. Schlenk’s crew made wholesale changes to his Lazer Chassis, Micro-Armor Lubricants, Main & Company, Zeller Automotive backed machine during the 23 minute delay as track personnel patched up the fence. The difference was quickly obvious, as Schlenk drove around Henry on the restart and never looked back on route to his 12th career win.

“I made the wrong decisions for the initial set-up…we were junk. But, when the red came out the crew thrashed on this thing and when they dropped the green I knew we had this,” said Schlenk, the 2010 National UMP Champion. “They guys also told me that if Jon wins he would tie me for most career wins here…I wasn’t going to let that happen.”

Defending Attica 305 sprint champion Nate Dussel took advantage when Dustin Stroup bobbled in turns three and four with eight laps to go to take the lead. However, the Bradner, Ohio driver made the same mistake on the white flag lap, but was able to gather his Berrier Fabrication, Kylynn Manufacturing machine back up and held off Caleb Griffith for his fourth career Attica victory.

“It was tricky up top. I just got excited and drove it in way to hard and when I saw Caleb’s nose, I drove it in harder in turn one. We got a new car this winter and have worked hard to figure it out. This team has set the bar very high and running sixth and seventh just isn’t acceptable,” said Dussel beside his Kistler Racing Products, Design Graphics Group, Dussel Welding, Conrad Transport backed #1.

F.A.S.T. 410 Sprints – Bryan Sebetto #24H
In the 30-lap O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 Sprint feature, Lee Jacobs and Duane Zablocki would lead the field to the green. Jacobs would grab the lead over Zablocki, Travis Philo, Mike Linder, Phil Gressman and Sebetto. However, on lap two, Phil would spin in turn two and collected challengers Gressman, Greg Wilson and last week’s Fremont winner Shane Stewart. Gressman would return to action while Stewart tried, but ended up pitting moments later with front damage.

The restart order was now Jacobs, Zablocki, Linder, Sebetto, Craig Mintz, and 11th starter Dean Jacobs. Mintz and Sebetto would dispatch Linder and lap five. The caution would fly again for a Philo spin on lap 7 with Jacobs leading Zablocki, Mintz, Sebetto, Dean Jacobs and Linder. On the restart, Mintz and Sebetto would drive past Zablocki and quickly close on Jacobs. Mintz would move to the top groove and take the lead on lap nine with Sebetto moving into second a lap latter. A Chris Andrews spin on lap 12 would stop the action with Mintz leading Sebetto, Lee Jacobs, Zablocki, Dean Jacobs, Linder and 14th starter Byron Reed.

When the green flew again, Mintz continued to lead Sebetto as they ran nose to tail with Lee Jacobs trying to hold off Zablocki while Dean Jacobs, Linder and Byron Reed waged a torrid battle for fifth. By lap 17, Sebetto and Mintz were no racing side by side. Sebetto would execute the slide job in turns three and four as they came down to complete the 19th circuit. Mintz stayed close as Zablocki took third on lap 21.

Sebetto and Mintz raced into lapped traffic with six laps to go as Zablocki ran a comfortable third with Linder, Lee Jacobs, Reed and Dean Jacobs continuing their battle for fourth. A Brandon Martin spin with three laps to go would bunch up the field. Sebetto would rocket off on the restart as Mintz just couldn’t muster enough momentum to get by. Linder would drive around Zablocki into third with Dean Jacobs into fourth. That’s the way they would finish. Brian Smith would charge to sixth in the closing laps with Todd Heller, Lee Jacobs, Brad Bowman and Jody Keegan rounding out the top 10.

Sunoco ALMS Late Models – Rusty Schlenk #91
In the 30-lap Sunoco American Late Model Series A-Main, Schlenk and Chris Keller would pace the field to the green, but a Mike Bores spin would necessitate a complete restart. On the second start Schlenk would drive the lead over Keller, Brian Ruhlman, Henry, Chris Ross and Matt Miller. Ruhlman would take second on lap three with Henry moving into third a lap later. Ruhlman and Henry raced side-by-side for second right on the rear bumper of Schlenk. Henry would take the runner-up spot on lap six and quickly raced to Schlenk’s inside for the lead.

Henry would drive under Schlenk into the top spot on lap 7 as they raced into lapped traffic, with Ruhlman, Miller, Ross, and a closing Jeff Babcock in tow. Following a caution on lap 9, Henry would continue to utilize the bottom groove to lead over Schlenk, Ruhlman, Miller and Babcock. Lapped traffic would really come into play by lap 13 as Schlenk drove to Henry’s outside as they battled for the lead with Miller grabbing third. Once clear of traffic, Henry opened a little breathing room over Schlenk with Miller, Ruhlman and Babcock giving chance.

Henry would catch the rear of the field on lap 18, but Schlenk was struggling a bit up against the cushion. The car on the move was 18th place starter Russ King who had climbed to seventh with 10 laps to go. Justin Coulter and Ryan VanderVeen would get together on lap 22 to bring out the caution with the running order Henry, Schlenk, Miller, Ruhlman, Babcock and King. On the restart, Ross would climb the front stretch fence just past the flag stand, tearing out a big section, causing a lengthy race stoppage.

That’s when Schlenk’s crew went to work. On the restart, Ruhlman and Keller would both spin to bring out the caution. When the green flew again, Schlenk drove his machine to the curb and rocketed past Henry who bobbled in turns one and two. With six laps to go, Henry regained his composure and closed on Schlenk. Schlenk would build momentum and would drive to the victory with Henry, Miller, Babcock, King, Ky Harper up from 14th, Mike Bores, Devin Shiels (up from 16th), Ryan Missler and Phil Austra rounding out the top 10.

Fremont Fence 305 Sprints – Nate Dussel #1
In the Fremont Fence 305 Sprint feature, Dustin Stroup and rookie Dan McCarron would bring the field to the green with Stroup blasting into the lead while fourth starter Jamie Miller rocketed into second and sixth starter Dussel into third. After only one lap, Jess Stiger would spin. On the restart, Miller would blast to the outside of Stroup to take the lead.

Miller could not shake Stroup who stalked within two car lengths while Dussel , Jordan Ryan, Jimmy Colvin and Caleb Griffith raced hard for third. As the leaders raced into lapped traffic on lap 10, Stroup and Miller began darting between the back markers battling for the lead. Dussel would quickly close to make it an exciting three car battle as they weaved in and out of traffic. Miller would encounter some sort of mechanical woes on lap 13 and would duck into the pits, giving the lead to Stroup.

Stroup would continue to lead with Dussel glued to his rear bumper while Ryan and Griffith battled for third. Young Stroup would bobble over the cushion in turns three and four coming down to complete the 17th circuit and Dussel would pounce as would Griffith . Griffith would look under Dussel several times over the next hand full of laps, but could not make the pass. Coming down to take the white flag, Dussel would also bobble against the cushion in turns three and four and Griffith raced to his inside. Dussel would regain his composure and maintain the lead and go on to his fourth career Attica win, Griffith would settle for a close second, with Stroup, Ryan, 14th starter Paul Weaver, D.J. Foos, Matt Merrill, Colvin, John Ivy and McCarron rounding out the top 10.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, May 4 for the 305 Engine Builders’ Challenge paying the feature winner $1,200. The UMP Late Models will also remove their roofs for a “topless” night of racing with the Bob’s Machine Shop/BMS Engines Dirt Trucks battling for $500 to win.

FAST Sprints To Push Off The 2012 Season

By Scott Porter – F.A.S.T. Public Relations

(Maumee, OH) Coming off the most competitive season to date, the Kistler Racing Products Fremont/Attica Sprint Title (F.A.S.T.) Championship Series presented by Engine Pro and KS Sales & Service is ready to push off its 2012 campaign. Drivers have their sights set on the $10,000 to win championship, but 20 grueling events lie ahead over the upcoming summer months to ultimately decide who will be named the 2012 F.A.S.T. Champion. The title hunt begins this weekend with events at Attica Raceway Park on Friday, April 20th with a $3,000 to win feature before making the haul to Fremont Speedway on Saturday, April 21st for the season opener at “The Track That Action Built”.

The Northern Ohio sprint car championship will combine points over the course of 20 nights between two of the premiere dirt racing facilities in the country and will ultimately reward its competitors with a cut from an independent point fund separate from the track’s season championship point funds. Entering its fourth season, the F.A.S.T. Series has handed out over $180,000 in cash, prizes, and contingency awards to local sprint car teams that compete at Attica and Fremont. Also increased exposure has been brought to the area through the hard work of a dedicated group of fans from the stands.

”Its hard to believe we’re kicking off our 4th year with this deal,” said Bryan Autullo of the F.A.S.T. organization. “We sat around 5 years ago wondering what we could do to increase the payout and the level of competition at our two home tracks and Scott Porter, Chris Kettman, and I came up with this simple idea. Some people thought we were crazy in the beginning, but what we’ve done here has put a lot of cash and prizes back into the local race shops. We’ve met our goal and we’ve seen some great point battles develop for that $10,000 top prize. We’re looking forward to another great season.”

Bryan Sebetto captured the 2011 F.A.S.T. Kistler Cup in large part due to three consecutive wins that the Burmeister Racing team rattled off at season’s end to narrowly beat out Dean Jacobs by just 27-points for the title. 2010 F.A.S.T. Champion Byron Reed was just 62-markers back in third place with 2009 F.A.S.T. Champion Craig Mintz in fourth, while Phil Gressman rounding out the top-five. The series saw 8 different feature winners in 16 nights of racing last year, with Sebetto scoring the most wins with five. Byron Reed, Phil Gressman and Brandon Martin each collected two apiece, while Tim Shaffer, Danny Smith, Sam Hafertepe Jr. and Brad Haudenschild each visited Engine Pro Victory Lane once.

Attica Raceway Park kick-offs the F.A.S.T. Championship Series season with a $3,000 to win feature on Friday, April 20th. John Bores has been gracious to schedule a total of four $3,000 to win events over the course of the season on various F.A.S.T. nights. “Ohio’s Finest Racing” speed plant as already hosted three 410 sprint car events this season, which has set up Craig Mintz as an early title contender in the mind of many. The Gibsonburg, Ohio native scored his first career UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions feature win after he chased down “The Black Bandit” Stevie Smith and narrowly beat him to the line by just 0.146 of a second. Mintz also finished 2nd to Dale Blaney on the previous night in All Star competition. Dean Jacobs, who has not competed yet in 2012, will also be a contender for the title aboard the Seeling Motorsports #97. Jacobs proved to be the most consistent driver at the 1/3-mile high-banked clay oval in 2010 en route to winning his first track championship at Attica.

Fremont Speedway will host its first F.A.S.T. event of the season on Saturday, April 21st, which will also serve as the opening event for the speedway’s 61st year of racing. Bryan Sebetto put the icing on the cake at Fremont last season by picking up the track championship, as well as, an All Star feature win and podium finish with the World of Outlaws at the Sandusky County Fairgrounds to conclude his 2011 campaign. With the track’s opener rained out last weekend, drivers will have to fine-tune their machine’s setups for the tricky 1/3-mile clay oval on the fly in hopes of not putting themselves into a hole so early in the year.

Many in the top-15 in points from last season are expected back to compete for the 2012 F.A.S.T. Championship along with the likes of Dean Jacob’s nephew Lee Jacobs who will pilot the famous Rick Ferkel owned #0, Avon, Indiana’s Miranda Throckmorton and Bowling Green, Ohio’s Travis Philo.

Some familiar faces to the series’ 2011 story lines find themselves in new places as the defending champion vacated the Burmeister Racing #16 in favor for a new endeavor in the Hammer Motorsports #24H. The Burmeister Racing team chose 2007 National Sprint Car Hall of Fame Rookie of the Year and 2010 Attica Raceway Park Track Champion Chris Andrews to strap into their Adkins Radiator, Flooring America, K&N Filters, Lucas Oil #16 Maxim. Also 2011 F.A.S.T. Rookie of the Year Brad Haudenschild has a new ride for the 2012 campaign aboard the Pete Grove Racing #70.

Wilson Gets Attica 305 Sprint Win; Henry Finds Victory Lane In Late Models; Andy Keegan Scores 1st Career Win In Trucks

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Friday the 13th was lucky for Greg Wilson. The two-time All Star champion piloted the Junior Felver owned #13 to victory in the 305 sprints at Attica Raceway Park . Jon Henry, who claimed eight victories at Attica in 2011, is figuring out his new car and held off a charging Matt Miller for the victory in the late model feature. And, Andy Keegan led all 15 laps of the dirt truck main to claim his first ever feature victory on UUI/Bazell Race Fuels Night.

Wilson inherited the lead with four laps to go after front runners D.J. Foos and Caleb Griffith – who had been trading slide jobs – crashed in turn four. Wilson, who finished third in the All Star feature last Saturday at Attica , scored his third career 305 sprint victory.

“Last week I made the comment about running third and maybe the best car didn’t win. What I meant by that was I thought we were pretty good at the end of the race. But those two guys last week had one hell of a race and it was cool to watch and it was cool to see Craig Mintz win. But tonight…hell, we were a third place car and those guys got racing hard and they just bumped there a little bit…we kind of got lucky,” said Wilson beside the Hampshire Racing Engines, Anderson Automotive, Felver’s Custom Cabinets backed #13.

“I have to thank Junior for bringing this thing out and letting me run it a little bit…it’s one of our old race cars. BK (Brian Kemenah) came over and tweaked on it a little bit,” continued Wilson . “I want to thank the fans for coming out…it’s a little bit chilly. Our goal is to build and get confidence and Brian and I to race together and get the feel for things. Come Speedweek and the month of money that’s what our goal is.”

In the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Model feature, fourth place starter Jon Henry drove under Ryan Missler for the lead on lap three and looked like he was going to cruise to the win. However, 11th place starter Matt Miller was rim-riding in the Rick DeLong #3 and raced to Henry’s outside with five laps to go. The pair raced side-by-side until Miller slipped over the cushion in turn two with three laps to go, falling back to third. Henry would not budge off the bottom on route to his 10th career Attica victory.

“I could hear someone back there and told myself it’s time to get up on the wheel. Thank goodness he slipped up there or I might have been in trouble,” said Henry beside his Fultz Fabrication backed machine. “We are starting to get this new Rocket figured out. We changed a lot on this from last week.”

“I have to thank all my sponsors, including the 2012 Dirty Dozen. These 12 people stepped up to help us this year and if weren’t for them this would be about impossible to do. I want to thank the JLH Contractor, William H. Bass Trucking, Reproductive Assistance, Truman Quarter Horses, Re-Deck of Northwest Ohio, Home Savings and Loan, Mike and Sheila Keller, Ron Spencer Real Estate, Automated Transport, Lehman & Lehman, Norada Lanes and APC,” added Henry.

Vickery, Ohio’s Andy Keegan survived a few restarts and a last lap, last corner bobble to score his first ever feature win in the Bob’s Machine Shop/BMS Engines Dirt Truck main.

“This is awesome. I almost screwed up there on that last lap, but I held on,” said Keegan, who is in his second year of racing.

“I have to thank my sponsors, G&H Restoration, Log Home Dreams and B&K Auto and especially my crew chief Arden Gowitzka. He couldn’t be here tonight, but he worked his tail off on this thing all winter,” added Keegan.

Summit UMP Late Models – Jon Henry #15
In the 25-lap late model main, Ryan Missler grabbed the lead at the drop of the green, but outside front row starter Chester Elliott spun to necessitate a complete restart. Again when the green flew, Missler bolted into the lead with Henry, Scott Phillips, Chris Ross, Mike Bores, Ryan Markham and Ky Harper in tow. Henry would drive under Missler for the lead on the third lap as the caution flew when John Bores and Phillips spun in separate incidents. On the restart Henry would pull away while Mike Bores followed his tire tracks into second with Missler fighting with Harper, Markham and a charging Matt Miller for third.

Harper would take third on lap seven and blasted past Bores for second a lap later. Henry was steadily pulling away as Harper tried to hold off Bores and Miller. Miller, using the top of the track, would drive around Bores for third on lap 14 and quickly closed on Harper. Henry, meanwhile, had caught the back of the pack and they were racing three wide in front of him, allowing Harper and Miller to rapidly close. However, Dan Wallace would stop in turn one on lap 15 to bring out the yellow flag. The good news for Henry was he now had a clear track…the bad news was he had a hungry Harper and Miller on his rear bumper.

On the restart, Miller would drive to Harper’s outside and would take the runner-up spot on lap 17. Miller would then start to eat into Henry’s lead and by lap 20, was racing to the leader’s outside. Henry and Miller raced side-by-side over the next two laps until Miller slipped over the cushion in turn two, allowing Henry to get away and Harper to slide back into second. Henry would cruise to the win over Harper, Miller, Mike Bores and Missler.

Fremont Fence 305 Sprints – Greg Wilson #13
In the Fremont Fence 305 Sprint main, Fremont, Ohio ’s D.J. Foos, who had won all three features at Attica so far in 2011, would charge to the lead from his outside front row starting spot with Wilson, Griffith, Dustin Dinan, Paul Weaver and Jamie Miller in tow. The action would grind to a halt after one lap was recorded when Jim Cushing flipped (he was okay). On the restart Foos would pull away from Wilson who was locked in a battle with Griffith for second. Griffith would take the runner-up spot on lap four, but could not eat into Foos’ lead.

However, when Foos encountered lapped traffic by the eighth circuit, Griffith would close quickly, with Wilson, Weaver, Nate Dussel, Miller and Nate Reeser giving chase. With eight laps to go, Griffith was not charging to Foos’ outside. This would begin a trading of slide jobs with Foos sliding Griffith in turns one and two and Griffith returning the favor in three and four. A caution when Reeser and Ross Moore spun in separate incidents on lap 19 would set up a classic duel.

When the green came back out, Foos and Griffith continued their exchange of maneuvers. As they came down to complete the 22nd lap, Griffith and Foos tangled exiting turn four, sending both flipping (both were uninjured). With four laps to go, the restart order was now Wilson , Dussel, Dinan, 15th starter Jordan Ryan, Weaver and Miller. Wilson would cruise to the victory over Dussel, Weaver, Dinan and Ryan.

Bob’s Machine Shop Dirt Trucks – Andy Keegan #0
In the 15-lap dirt truck main, Keegan and Steve Endicott would lead the field to the green with Keegan gaining the advantage. Keegan could not shake Endicott as Jeff Wank, Art Ball and Daniel Roepke battled hard for third. The first caution would fly on lap five for a Dana Frey Spin. On the restart, Bob Dible would spin to necessitate another restart. Each time the young Keegan would hit his marks perfectly to maintain the lead. Keegan would pull away slightly as Endicott now found himself locked in a battle with Wank, Ball and Roepke as Brian Sorg, Willie Keegan and Dwight Waltermeier raced each other hard for sixth.

The final caution for a Chuck Roelle spin would bunch up the field on lap 9. Once again, Keegan held the point on the restart while Endicott maintained his battle with Wank, Ball and Roepke. Both Wank and Ball would drive under Endicott as the white flag flew with Keegan holding a two truck length lead. However, as Keegan drove into turn three on the final lap, he got into the cushion hard, upsetting the handling of his truck. He was able to gather it back in and drove to the checkers over Wank, Ball, Endicott and Roepke. I’m sorry to say but some of these guys last names would be perfect for them to feature on somewhere like www.nu-bay.com.
