By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Shannon Babb is making the 2012 UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Hell Tour championship come down to the last night of the 28-race event. The Moweaqua, Ill. Driver scored his second win in the last three days, taking the lead from race-long leader Frank Heckenast Jr. on a restart with just two laps to go Friday at Attica Raceway Park.
Babb, the 2005, 2006 and 2011 Sumer Nationals champion, rolled into Attica hot last year, taking the victory, his fifth in a row on route to winning nine features during the month of racing. This year, his Attica victory on Summit Racing Equipment/Central Ohio Farmers Night, was his fourth on the Hell Tour and takes his Summer Nationals career total to 75 victories.
Heckenast, Babb and Ryan Unzicker battled side-by-side nearly the last half of the 40-lap feature.
Image“Frank was probably going to win that one. But when that last caution flew, I drove under him and thought I had him but the caution came back out. On the next restart, he went down to block and I drove to the high side and it worked. That was fun racing with Frank and Ryan (Unzicker). We have been hot this last week, but Brian Shirley has been consistent and deserves to win the championship,” said Babb beside his Petroff Towing/Donley Trucking/All Star Performance/Performance Rod 7 Custom/Hoosier Tire backed #18.
Attica was the 27th stop (only one cancellation) with one race to go, Saturday at Oakshade. The tour had 28 races over 32 days coving eight different states.
Not to be outdone, the Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals made their 27th stop on the tour at Attica with Taylor Cook, formerly of the Toledo, Ohio, but now calling Stanley, N.C. home, leading all 20 laps for his first tour victory.
“It was a long haul up here, but this makes it worth it to get a win in front of a lot of my family and friends. I have to thank my dad and everyone who helps like Lynn Nyler Racing Engines, Wix Filters and Shelley and Mark Advertising,” said Cook in the Engine Pro Victory Lane.
In the Fremont Fence 305 Sprint feature, defending division track champion Nate Dussel grabbed the lead from Jason Keckler on lap 8, then got passed by John Ivy on a lap 19 restart, had to battle with Ivy and D.J. Foos before regaining the lead with five laps to go, and then held off Foos for his second victory of the season at Attica.
“Johnny (Ivy) got me on a restart last week at Fremont. I’ve finished second too many times and I wasn’t going to let that happen again. The car was just great,” said Dussel beside his Berrier Fabrication, Kylynn Mfg., Jeff’s Bar & Grill, Kistler Racing Products, Dussel Welding, Conrad Transport backed #1.

DIRTcar Summer Nationals – Shannon Babb #18
Unzicker and Heckenast would bring the field of 22 to the green for the 40-lap late model feature with Heckenast grabbing the lead while Unzicker held second with sixth starter Scott James blasting into third with Babb and Shirley rounding out the top five. Babb would drive under James for third on lap three while Heckenast pulled away from Unzicker.
After a spirited battle with Unzicker, Babb would drive into second on lap seven, but could not close on Heckenast. Unzicker would catch Babb and the two would continue their battle for the runner-up soot while Jon Henry had moved into fourth, with James, Jeep Van Wormer and Shirley in tow.
But, when Heckenast caught lapped traffic on lap 13, Babb and Unzicker began to close. At the halfway point, Heckenast’s lead was gone and he was forced to fend off repeated challenges from Babb and Unzicker as the trio sliced and diced through traffic. Heckenast caught a break with 10 laps to go as the first caution of the event flew for Matt Miller who lost a drive shaft.
With a clear track now, Heckenast blasted around the top on the restart, but Babb hounded the leader on the bottom with Unzicker racing the middle groove. It only took one lap for the three car battle up front to resume as Heckenast, Babb and Unzicker raced three wide for the lead.
With three laps to go, the caution flew and on the restart, Babb dove to Heckenast’s inside in turns one and two and exited with the lead. Unfortunately the caution flew for a slowing Shirley, who did not stop and retained his fourth running position. This time on the restart, Heckenast went to the bottom to block Babb, but the Moweaqua Missile drove to the top side and around Heckenast for the lead.
As Babb, Heckenast and Unzicker raced to the white, it was still anyone’s victory as they continued to race side by side. Coming to the checkered, Babb would edge Unzicker, Heckenast, Shirley and Henry.

Summit Modified Nationals – Taylor Cook #21
In the UMP Modified 20 lap feature, Cook and Brett Miller would bring the field to the green, but before a lap could be recorded Corey Bevard would stop to bring out the caution. On the second attempt at the start, a multi-car pileup brought about a third try to start the race.
This time the field was able to get a lap in before another caution for Nick Rosselit, with the running order Cook, Bill Keeler, Miller, Kody Weisner, Terry Hull and Eddie Shaner.
When the green reappeared, the race finally found a rhythm with Cook pulling away out front with a good battle for second between Keeler, Weisner, Hull and Miller. Weisner would take second on lap six with Hull moving into third a lap later. Hull and Weisner would battle side by side over the next four laps before Hull would take second on lap 11.
Cook would race smooth on the bottom to continue to lead unchallenged as he raced into lapped traffic on the 13th circuit. Hull would begin to inch closer when the caution flew on lap 16 for Collin Thirlby. But, the young Cook was up to the challenge and hit his marks the last four laps to take the win. Hull, Derrick Noffsinger, Miller and Ryan Odette would round out the top five.

Fremont Fence 305 Sprints – Nate Dussel #1
Jason Keckler and Zack Kramer would bring the 305 sprints to the green of their 25-lap feature with Keckler driving into the lead while fourth starter Nate Reeser grabbed second with Dussel racing to his inside and Kramer back to fourth. Dussel would take second on the next circuit, dropping Reeser to third with Kramer, John Ivy and Caleb Griffith in tow. Griffith would blast into third on lap three and closed on Dussel.
Meanwhile Keckler had pulled away slightly as now Dussel, Griffith and Ivy waged a tremendous battle for second. A caution on lap six would bunch up the field and on the restart, Keckler had his hands full with Dussel. Dussel would drive high around Keckler on lap eight to grab the lead with Ivy in third, Griffith back to fourth and 12th starter D.J. Foos into fifth. Griffith would drive into third on lap 11 and take the runner-up spot a lap later.
A Jim Taddeo spin on lap 12 would put Griffith right on Dussel’s rear bumper, but helped Dussel who was just getting ready to catch lapped traffic. On the restart Dussel would blast away at the top cushion while Griffith now had to deal with Ivy for second with Foos up to fourth.
Griffith would spin in turn two on lap 16, handing Ivy the runner-up spot with Foos into third while Keckler, Stuart Brubaker and Dustin Dinan in tow. The final caution would fly on lap 18 for a Jeremy Duposki spin with the running order Dussel, Ivy, Foos, Keckler, Dinan, Brubaker, Jimmy Colvin and Kramer.
On the restart, Ivy would drive under Dussel as they raced side by side down the back stretch. Ivy would actually lead lap 19 before Dussel would drive to his outside in turns one and two to regain the top spot. Ivy and Foos would make it a three car battle for the lead with five circuits remaining with Dinan moving into fourth followed by Keckler, Brubaker, Colvin and Dustin Stroup.
Dussel flirted with disaster several times, slamming the big cushion hard in turn four, but was able to gather it back up and continue to lead. Foos would take second on lap 21, but could not get a good run under Dussel to grab the lead. Dussel would drive to his fifth career Attica win with Foos, Ivy, Brubaker and Dinan rounding out the top five.
Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, July 20 for Christmas in July presented by Smith Family Foods and Quality Welding. It will be a Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title (FAST) Championship Series event for the 410 and 305 sprints with the UMP Late Models also in action.

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Just like the temperatures, the UMP Summer Nationals Hell Tour will heat up when they make their 27th event in 31 days at Attica Raceway Park on Friday, July 13. The UMP Late Models and Modifieds will compete on Central Ohio Farmers/Summit Racing Equipment Night, along with the Fremont Fenced 305 Sprints.
The UMP Summer Nationals began racing on June 13, and other than three scheduled days off, they have only missed one race – a cancellation because of the heat on July 1 – as of July 10. The Hell Tour was scheduled to be 28 races over 31 days and at tracks in eight different states. Attica Raceway Park holds the 27th.
The Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals for the UMP Modifeds were added to The Hell Tour last year and as of July 10, had competed in 15 events.
So far for the UMP Late Models tour, as of Tuesday, Brian Shirley leads the Summer Nationals Points. Shirley leads the nationals with five wins. Shannon Babb, who claimed the win at Attica in 2011 for the Hell Tour – his fifth consecutive win in the 2011 nationals after a fantastic battle with Jeep Van Wormer – sits second in the 2012 Summer Nationals points with two wins. Jason Feger, who won the 2010 Attica Summer Nationals event and earned the championship, sits third with three wins along the Hell Tour in 2012. Brandon Sheppard is fourth with a win while Ryan Unzicker is fifth with a win. Other winners (as of July 10) along the Hell Tour are Brian Birkhofer with a pair of victories, Billy Moyer Jr. with three wins; local star Jon Henry with a win; Billy Moyer with two wins; three time Summer Nationals champion Dennis Erb Jr. with a win; Scott Weber with a victory; and Rodney Melvin with a victory.
The Summer Nationals first visited Attica in 2010 with Feger picking up the win that wrapped up the Hell Tour championship. In 2011, Babb made it five Summer Nationals victories in a row with his win at Attica, but it wasn’t easy as he and Van Wormer swapped the lead several times throughout the feature. It was Babb’s eighth victory over 22 days of racing.
For the UMP Modifieds, 2011 marked the first year of their Hell Tour under the sponsorship of Summit Racing Equipment. Their tour in 2011 began June 13, and they have competed in 15 events as of July 10. For the second consecutive year, Mike Harrison enters the final week of the DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals looking to close out a championship.
So far, Ray Bollinger, David Gilpin and Michael Long each have two modified victories during the Hell Tour with Harrison, Matt Mevert, Matt Cooper, Dean Hoffman, Jacob Poel, Brent Mullins, Larry Anderson, David Wietholder and Jeff Curl each scoring a victory. Gilpin leads the national UMP modified point standings.
Last season at Attica, Brian Ruhlman scored the UMP modified victory during “The Hell Tour” stop.
Attica Raceway Park will pay the UMP temporary membership fee for the late models in the top 25 of the track’s weekly points and the highest in the track’s top 25 points will get a provisional starting position in the $5,000-to-win feature event.
Gates will open at Attica at 4 p.m. Friday, July 13, with racing at 7:45 p.m. Tickets are $18 for Adults, $15 for Seniors with teens ages 11-15 just $10 and kids 10 and under free. Pit passes are $30.

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) The action at Attica Raceway Park Friday was just as hot as the 100 degree temperature, with three first time feature winners and nearly a fourth on Kear’s Speed Shop Fan Appreciation Night.
Waterville, Ohio’s Travis Philo was there to take advantage when leader Brandon Martin’s left rear tire exploded with nine laps to go in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 Sprint feature. Philo, 21, then held off a challenge from veteran Greg Wilson with a restart with just three laps to go, to score his first ever 410 sprint car victory. After climbing from his Control Design Solutions/Banshee Graphics/DB3 Imaging.com backed machine in the Engine Pro Victory Lane, Philo grabbed his dad in a huge bear hug.
“I have to thank my Dad. He has stood behind me and has spent a lot of money on me since I started racing when I was four years old. I want to thank Gary Bowe…he’s been working on this thing for two years. And tonight Brian Kemenah came to help us as well…hope he sticks around for awhile,” said Philo. “I want to thank my uncle and everyone who has stayed behind us through the rough times.”
In the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Models, Holland, Ohio’s Ky Harper, also 21 years of age, traded slide jobs with Mike Bores after a restart with just six laps to go, and went on to score his first ever feature win.
“After Travis won, I kind of joked how great it would be if I got my first win too. Travis and I are friends so I figured if he could do it I could too,” said Harper beside his Fred Wolf Auctioneer, IAM Machinists, Angola Plaza, Stiltner Racing backed #34.
“I have to thank all these guys who bust their butts every week on this thing and especially tonight as hot as it was. This one is for a buddy of mine who we just lost,” added an emotional Harper.
It looked like it was going to be three first time winners in a row, as 15-year-old Jordan Ryan led the first 23 laps of the 25-lap Fremont Fence 305 Sprint feature. But, a caution with just two laps to go, put Caleb Griffith right on Ryan’s rear bumper, and Griffith pounced on the restart, executing a slide job in turns three and four to take the lead as they raced to the white flag. Griffith would pull away the final lap for his second win of the season and fourth career victory at Attica.
“Jordan did an awesome job on those restarts…I honestly didn’t know if we had anything for him. I got a good run on him in one and two on that restart and was able to keep up my momentum. I nearly gave that away though when I ran off of turn two there late in the race. But as I always tell the guys, we are too smart to quit. They have given me a great car all year…we’ve had a top five car every night out,” said Griffith beside his Al Davis Carpet and Laminate/Crown Battery/McDonald’s restaurants//Youngs Breading and Batter Mix/Tackle Box 2/JLH General Contractor backed #40.
In the 15-lap Bob’s Machine Shop Dirt Truck feature, Daniel Roepke Jr. survived early race crashes and pulled away to score his first ever Attica feature win.
“We are on a roll right now. This thing is just so fast and easy to drive. I have to thank my dad and everyone who helps,” said Roepke beside his Village Inn/Perkin’s Tree Service/Johnny’s Electric/Vision Quest backed #88.

O’Reilly 410 Sprints – Travis Philo #5T
Mike Linder and Philo would lead the field to the green in the 410 sprint feature, with Philo grabbing the lead while fourth starter Craig Mintz moved into second with Linder, Brandon Martin, Greg Wilson and Phil Gressman in tow. Philo would blast around the track’s high side to pull away while Mintz and Martin battled for second.
Philo would catch the back of the field on lap six while Mintz and Martin continued to race side by side for second with Gressman in fourth followed by Linder and Wilson. Martin would use lapped traffic to grab second on lap seven, while Philo continued to lead.
With 11 laps in the books, Martin had closed to within a car length of Philo with Mintz, Gressman and Wilson battling hard for third. On lap 13, Philo slipped off the track exiting turn two, allowing Martin to claim the lead. Martin would pull away while Philo battled with Gressman, Mintz and Wilson.
The first caution would fly on lap 17 for a Stuart Brubaker spin. On the restart Martin pulled away from Philo, Gressman, Wilson and Mintz. Mintz would stop on lap 18 to bring the yellow back out. Again Martin pulled away on the restart, with Philo now racing hard with Gressman and Wilson for second.
With nine laps to go, Martin’s left rear would explode exiting turn four and at the same time, Gressman would spin off the back stretch with a flat right rear tire. The restart running order was now Philo, Wilson, Chris Andrews, Linder and Duane Zablocki. Philo and Wilson would run side by side when the green reappeared with Andrews right on their rear bumpers. With three laps to go, Andrews would spin to bring out the final caution.
On the restart, Phil bolted back to the top while Wilson was glued to the bottom and ran to the leader’s inside as they raced to the white flag. Philo hit his marks perfectly the last lap and had only a slight bobble coming to the checkered as Wilson tried to race under him. Philo took the victory by a car length over Wilson, Linder, Zablocki and Caleb Helms.

Summit UMP Late Models – Ky Harper #34
Harper and Ken Hahn would pace the late model field, but a Larry Kingseed spin on the start would necessitate a complete restart. Harper would take the lead when the green came back out with John Bores moving into second with Hahn, Ryan Missler and Mike Bores in tow.
Mike Bores and Missler would get together in turn three on the second lap, with Missler spinning and collecting John Mayes Jr., ending both of their nights. A lap would be recorded before the caution would fly again for a Nate Potts spin. A lap and another caution for another Potts’ spin.
Each time the cautions would wipe out a big lead by Harper. When the green came back out, Harper ran off and hid as a tremendous battle ensued for second between John Bores, Mike Bores, Ken Hahn, Jeff Babcock and Wayne Maffett Jr. Mike Bores would take second on lap nine with John Bores trying to hold off Babcock and Dusty Moore. Babcock would take third on lap 12 and drive around Mike Bores for second a lap later.
With nine laps to go, Babcock was quickly closing on Harper with Mike Bores, John Bores, Moore and Rusty Schlenk in pursuit. Harper would begin lapping cars with seven laps to go as Babcock pulled in on his rear bumper. But, Babcock would fly off the high side of turn one on lap 19 to bring out the caution.
On the ensuing restart, Mike Bores would drive under Harper, executing a slide job in turns one and two, Harper would return the favor in the next corner, but Bores lead lap 20. Harper would drive back around Bores on lap 21 to regain the lead as they raced side by side. Once Harper got back into the lead, he would regain his momentum on the high side of the track and pulled away the remaining five laps for the victory. Mike Bores, Schlenk, Moore and John Bores would round out the top five.

Fremont Fence 305 Sprints – Caleb Griffith #40
Griffith and Ryan would bring the 305 sprint field to the green with Ryan grabbing the lead while Griffith was trying to fend off Dustin Dinan for second. Dinan would take second on lap three as Ryan flew away out front. As Ryan hit lapped traffic by the seventh circuit, Dinan closed quickly with Griffith, Paige Polyak, Nate Dussel and Steve Rando in pursuit. Nate Reese would spin on lap eight, giving Ryan a clear track.
On the restart Ryan would pull away while Griffith blasted around Dinan into second. With 11 laps scored, Ross Moore would spin to bunch up the field again. Ryan would lead on the restart over Griffith, Dinan, Polyak, Dussel and D.J. Foos. Ryan looked headed to his first ever sprint car win, as Griffith, Dinan and Polyak put on a show battling for second.
Ryan would begin lapping cars again on lap 18, but looked like a veteran slicing his way through the field. But, with two laps to go, Moore would spin again, putting Griffith right on Ryan’s tail. On the restart, Ryan would go to the bottom of turns one and two while Griffith flew to the outside, getting a good run on Ryan as they drove into turn three. Griffith would fly under Ryan and slide up in front as they raced to the white flag. Once in front, Griffith would drive away to the win with Ryan, Dussel, Foos and Dinan rounding out the top five.

Bob’s Machine Shop Dirt Trucks – Dan Roepke Jr. #88
Bob Dible and Jeff Wank would pace the dirt truck field to the green, but a massive pile-up on the start would necessitate a complete restart. Dustin Keegan, who benefitted from the opening lap crash that claimed Wank as one of the victims, would now start on the outside of row one and would grab the lead when the green came back out.
Keegan would lead Dible, Brian Arnold, Roepke and Curt Inks. Roepke would drive from fourth to second on the second lap with Dible, Arnold, Art Ball and last place starter John Ivy in tow. The caution would fly for a Tony Siferd spin with five laps recorded. On the restart, Roepke would drive to Keegan’s inside to challenge with Dible trying to hold off Ivy and Arnold for third. Kyle Cline would spin on lap eight just as Roepke took the lead from Keegan. On the ensuing restart, Arnold would spin.
When the green reappeared, Roepke would pull away as Keegan and Ivy battled for second. Keegan would get into the back of Ivy in turn three on lap nine, with Ivy spinning. On the restart Roepke would again pull away with Keegan now coming to a halt with mechanical issues.
With six laps to go, the restart order was Roepke, Dible, Ball, Andy Keegan, Brian Sorg and Arnold. Roepke would pull away to a huge lead while a great battle for second was underway between Dible, Ball and Andy Keegan. Ball would take second on lap 13, but could not close as Roepke took the checkered. Ball, Andy Keegan, Dible and Sorg would round out the top five.
Attica Raceway Park will be back in action for the UMP Summer Nationals Hell Tour for the late models and modifieds on Friday, July 13. The 305 sprints will also be in action.
