2011 Champion's Name to Be Etched On The FAST Kistler Cup

By Scott Porter – FAST Public Relations: (Maumee, OH) The stage is set for one of the most intriguing championship nights in the three year history of the Kistler Racing Products Fremont/Attica Sprint Title (F.A.S.T.) Championship Series presented by Engine Pro & PAC Valve Springs. After back-to-back visits to Engine Pro Victory Lane at Attica Raceway Park, Bryan Sebetto has vaulted into the lead by a slim 13-points over veteran Dean Jacobs in the F.A.S.T. Kistler Cup point standings. But sitting just 32-points back in third place is defending F.A.S.T. Champion Byron Reed who looks to hoist the Kistler Cup yet again. The 21-race championship series between Attica Raceway Park and Fremont Speedway will finally conclude this Saturday, September 10th at Fremont where the $10,000 winner’s share of the cash and prizes will ultimately be decided.

The Burmeister Racing team adamantly claims they do not “points race”, but go for victory lane instead. The team, based out of Fremont, Ohio and owned by Fremont Speedway Hall of Famer Sonny Burmeister, put together an impressive month of August which saw them claim two wins, a second and third place finish. Those four podium finishes have put them into the position where they are today as the front runner heading into the $3,000 to win finale. Bryan Sebetto, 28 years old, is a product of Northern Ohio dirt track racing where he cut his teeth in the dirt trucks before developing his racing skills through the ranks of the 305 sprints all before landing a ride in a 410 sprint car. The simplest equation to clinch his first-career F.A.S.T. championship is to finish inside the top-3 finish on Saturday aboard the JLH General Contractors, Steven Mapus Tools, Burns Petroleum backed #16. Sebetto’s average finish in the eight F.A.S.T. events contested at Fremont Speedway is a 4th-place finish.

The Seeling Motorsports entry driven by Dean Jacobs has been a constant fixture inside the top-5 throughout the 2011 season. In fact the Wooster, Ohio native has finished inside the top-5 in all but two of the 15 F.A.S.T. events contested to date and has been on a streak of eleven straight. The Northwest Ohio Towing and Recovery, NAPA Truck and Auto Center backed #97 looks to visit victory lane for the first time under the F.A.S.T. banner, which ultimately could play a role in winning the $10,000 championship if Sebetto were to finish 4th or worse during the feature event. Dean looks to build upon the three runner-up finishes at “The Track That Action Built,” but hopes not to be chasing Sebetto to the line. The F.A.S.T. Championship would be the second step for Jacobs, who wrapped up the Attica track championship just a few short weeks ago, in claiming the $3,000 bonus for anyone who can claim the F.A.S.T. title and both track championships this season. Jacob’s average finish in the eight F.A.S.T. events contested at Fremont Speedway is a 4th-place finish.

B&S Racing’s Byron Reed sits in third place with what might seem like a daunting task ahead in order to claim his second career F.A.S.T. title. Two sub-par performances at Attica Raceway Park have put “The Monclova Missile” in a 32-point deficit going into the finale at Fremont, but a reassuring fact for the 9-time Northern Ohio track champion is knowing that he has finished inside the top-5 in all eight events contested at Fremont. He has the highest average finish of the three drivers (3rd-place) and has visited Engine Pro Victory Lane twice at “The Track That Action Built.” A third visit to victory lane would help put the icing on the cake if Jacobs were to finish in 6th-place or worse and if Sebetto struggled to an 11th or worse finish.

Qualifying could play a key role in deciding what will happen on Saturday. While none of the three title contenders have posted quick time in 2011, Sebetto holds a slim advantage in starting the highest in the feature events. Both Sebetto and Reed have picked up wins while starting on the front row and from charging to the win from outside the top-5 rows. Only Reed and Jacobs have picked up precious bonus points thanks to the KSE Steering Hard Charger, which is a 2-point bonus in the F.A.S.T. Series.

While the attention will be on the top-3 in points another interesting battle brews between 2009 F.A.S.T. Champion Craig Mintz and “The Ohio Gas Man” Phil Gressman for fourth place in the F.A.S.T. Kistler Cup point standings. The two have flip flopped 4th place numerous times since July, but currently Mintz claims a slim 3-point margin over Gressman.

Mintz moved back into the top-5 in June and seems to have found his stride behind the Top Gun Enterprises new GF1 Chassis by Ti22 Performance. Since claiming the hard charger and a podium finish at Attica the first weekend of July, Mintz has gone on to collect three more top-5 runs including a runner up finish at Fremont.

Gressman has picked up feature wins at both Northern Ohio speed plants, but has struggled to find the consistency that the De Genzman Racing Enterprises, Kear’s Speed Shop backed #53 is capable of. Gressman will need to finish at least four positions higher than Mintz in order to take back fourth in the final standings.

It appears to be etched in stone that Mike Linder will hold down the 6th place in F.A.S.T. points if both he and Gressman transfer into Saturday’s $3,000 to win feature event which starts 22-cars. The same can be said for Brad Haudenschild who holds a 77-point advantage over Kevin Lee for 7th-place. Haudenschild has also clinched the 2011 Hot Shot Engine Heater F.A.S.T. Rookie of the Year.

The next battle brews in 8th place between Lee and Whitehouse, Ohio’s Todd Heller who sits just 5-points back. Lee will have to stay on the tail tank of Heller’s G.L. Heller Company backed #14h in order to claim the position. Duane Zablocki looks to finish inside the top-10 for the first time in his racing career and a top-15 run could help solidify that. Sitting 24-points outside the pay window is Brad Bowman. After losing a motor late in the season Brad has been hopping rides in hopes of finishing inside the top-10 during his rookie season behind the wheel of a 410 sprint car.

The final chapter of the 2011 Fremont/Attica Sprint Title will be written once the dust settles on the 1/3-mile clay oval located inside historic Sandusky County Fairgrounds. Gates on Saturday will open at 4:00 pm with racing starting at 7:00 pm at “The Track The Action Built.” Visit www.fremontohspeedway.com for more information.

Shaffer Earns 3rd Straight All Star Win To Close Attica Season; Marcoullier Nabs Late Model Win; Ivy Claims Truck Win

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Tim Shaffer dominated the 40-lap feature Saturday at Attica Raceway Park, leading all 40 laps to claim his third straight All Star Circuit of Champions victory to increase his lead in the series’ national and Ohio Region points standing.

Shaffer has now won nine All Star events in 2011. His victory in the Baumann Auto Group Attica Ambush brings his career total to 44 with the All Stars and moves him into a tie for sixth on the all-time win list with former champion Kevin Huntley and Dave Blaney. The Steel City Outlaw needs 9 more All Star feature wins to catch four-time series champion Frankie Kerr for fifth.

The cautions flew perfect for Shaffer throughout the 40-lap affair…just as he was getting into heavy lapped traffic. Shaffer would use the clear track and clean air to pull away each time.

“It’s amazing…it really is. It’s a lot of fun. When you have a great team and great people behind you…Paul Kistler with the engines and J&J Chassis…every body,” said Shaffer in the Engine Pro Victory Lane beside his Aaron Call/Janet Holbrook owned machine.

“It all goes back to a great team from the owners to the people working on it…just everything,” added Shaffer of his Kistler Racing Products/Kistler Engines backed #83.

Shaffer and Phil Gressman would lead the field to the green with Shaffer grabbing the lead while fast qualifier Danny Holtgraver and Cole Duncan would get around Gressman with Todd Kane and David Gravel giving chase. The first caution would fly on the third circuit for a Greg Wilson spin.

Following two more green flag laps the caution would fly for Cap Henry who suffered a broken wheel. On the restart Shaffer would pull away from the great battle for second between Holtgraver, Duncan and Gressman while sixth starter Gravel would vault into fifth. The car on the move was Bryan Sebetto, who had won the last two features at Attica , as he blasted from his 15th starting spot to eighth by the eighth lap.

Shaffer would catch the rear of the field by the 12th lap, but Holtgraver and Duncan could not close. The caution would fly for Wilson again on lap 13, giving Shaffer a clear track. The running order was Shaffer, Holtgraver, Duncan , Gressman, Gravel, Kane, Byron Reed and Sebetto. On the restart Sebetto would drive into sixth and was pressuring Gravel for fifth. Disaster would strike on lap 19 when fourth running Gressman appeared to have something break on his machine, sending him upside down in turn three and Sebetto made heavy contact with the crashing car, ending his night.

The red came just as Shaffer was getting into lapped traffic once again. With a clear track, Shaffer would pull away on the restart while Holtgraver, Duncan , Gravel and 13th place starter Dean Jacobs waged a great battle. Holtgraver would slip over the cushion exiting turn two on lap 25, following to fifth as Duncan, Gravel and Jacobs got by.

Shaffer would hit lapped traffic on lap 27, but Duncan and Gravel could not close. With eight laps to go, Shaffer was in heavy traffic with Gravel taking second from Duncan as Jacobs and Reed closed. Jacobs would slide off turns three and four on lap 33, doing a 360 spin to bring out the caution. Shaffer now had two lapped machines between himself and Gravel.

Shaffer would pull away on the restart while Gravel worked his way around the lapped machines. Meanwhile Holtgraver had rallied to take third on lap 34 with Reed moving into fifth.

Shaffer would take the checkered by two car lengths over Gravel, Holtgraver, Reed and 16th place starter Randy Hannagan.

For Gravel, who has been staying at Shaffer’s crew chief Brian Kemenah’s home, it was his third straight runner-up finish to Shaffer.

“He’s freaking killing me…I gave him one last night (at Lernerville). I wish this was 50 laps…usually I get tired in 40 lap races but we were coming at the end. It’s crazy, we finish one, two every night and we sleep in the same house,” said Gravel beside his P&M Transportation/JRC Transportation/DDR Motorsports #89.

Holtgraver was excited about his third place showing.

“We ran second the whole race. That cushion is mean…it bit me. But we were able to battle back and we’re standing here on the front stretch so I’m pretty happy,” said Holtgraver beside his Buckeye Steering Products/Spinnwebbers Auto Sales backed machine. “You never quit…no matter what happens never give up…just keep digging and digging.”

Fultz Late Models – Dona Marcoullier #6M
In the Fultz Fabrications UMP Late Models, Houghton Lake, Michigan’s Dona Marcoullier passed 2011 Attica champion Ryan Missler with seven laps to go and went on to score his first career Attica victory. He hadn’t planned on competing at Attica , but when another track rained out earlier, he made the tow worth his effort.

“About 5:30 we pulled into Oakshade and they cancelled so we busted our butts to get here,” said Marcoullier beside his Gene’s Auto Parts and Salvage backed #6m.

“I knew if I just held in there I had the right tires on and the car has been great. We haven’t been doing a lot of racing because of this financial stuff but when we run we are good. I have to thank my engine builder Dowker Engines, my sponsor Jimmy’s Collision…he came all the way down here from Houghton Lake to help us with tires and my dad….I wouldn’t be here without him,” added Marcoullier.

In the Computerman Dirt Trucks, former 410 and 305 sprint Attica champion John Ivy battled with 2011 track champion Bob Dible throughout the 15-lap affair before claiming his first career dirt truck victory.

“I hope Charlie lets me drive this some more. I’m having a ball…this is fun,” said Ivy. “I’ve won in nearly everything here now except a late model and I’m willing to give that a try. I have to thank Charlie and Craig…they give me a good piece.”

Following an opening lap caution for Donnie Marcoullier, Ernie Haynes would grab the lead in the late model feature with Dona Marcoullier, Jeremy Canada and Ryan Missler giving chase. While everyone seemed to want to run the bottom, Missler would get up to the cushion and rocket into third on the second lap. Haynes, Marcoullier and Missler would then battle for the lead with Missler driving into the top spot on lap four.

Marcoullier would take second from Haynes on lap 10 and started to close on Missler. With nine laps to go, Marcoullier and Missler would race side-by-side with Marcoullier able to drive under Missler for the lead on lap 18. Marcoullier would hit the back of the field by the 21st lap, but Missler could not close while Haynes, Keith Berner, Canada , Chris Ross and Ryan Markham waged a great battle for third.

Marcoullier would take the win over Missler, Berner, Haynes and Canada.

Computer Man Dirt Trucks – John Ivy #00
In the 15-lap dirt truck main, recently crowned 2011 Attica champion Bob Dible would take the lead at the drop of the green with Dwight Waltermeier, Chuck Roelle and Ivy in tow. Following a lap 2 caution, Ivy would drive into third and then take second from Waltermeier a lap later. With Dible clinging to the bottom groove, Ivy would move to the middle of the track as he and Dible raced side-by-side for the lead. Ivy was able to take the point on lap nine as Dible continued to race to his inside.

Ivy was able to pull away slightly the last five laps for the win with Dible, Art Ball, Dan Hennig and Waltermeier rounding out the top five.

2011 Labor Day Weekend Preview

By Brian Liskai – All Star Circuit of Champions Public Relations: (Camargo, IL) The points battles have been exciting all season for the All Star Circuit of Champions and the outcome from a busy Labor Day weekend could have a big impact on who is crowned the series’ National and Ohio region champion.

Two time and defending All Star champion Tim Shaffer is coming off his 7th series’ victory – winning August 27 at Mercer Raceway Park – to extend his lead in the national standings over three time All Star champion Dale Blaney. However, Blaney, who also has scored seven series’ wins in 2011 and sits second on the all-time win list with 83 career victories, leads the $20,000-to-win Ohio Region points. However, Shaffer, who won the series’ Great Plains Region recently, is right behind, looking to pounce as the All Stars compete in three events over the holiday weekend. Shaffer has 42 career All Star victories and sits tied for 9th on the all-time win list with Kelly Kinser.

The All Stars will take on the tough Western Pennsylvania competitors Friday, September 2 at Lernerville Speedway. On Saturday, the All Stars will help Attica Raceway Park close out its 2011 season with the traditional Baumann Auto Group Attica Ambush. Then it’s off to Butler Speedway in Quincy, Michigan on Sunday, September 4, for a make-up event that was originally scheduled for August 20 but was postponed due to rain.

Shaffer, a former Lernerville track champion, took the Second Annual Duel in the Dirt at the speedway last season. It was his 17th overall feature win of the year in 2010 and his 12th All Star win. As it has been most of this season, Blaney was second while milti-time Lernerville champion Ed Lynch Jr. came home third.

Besides Shaffer and Blaney, David Gravel continues to show he has what it takes to claim an All Star championship. He sits third in the National and Ohio region point standings. Throw in defending Lernerville champion Danny Holtgraver, who sits fourth in the All Stars’ Ohio Region points, and 2011 Lernerville champion Carl Bower and track regulars Rod George, Brandon Matus, Brian Ellenberger, Kevin Schaeffer, Brent Matus, Brian Steinman and Andy McKisson – who won a feature August 26 – and it has the recipe for a “barn-burner.”

On Saturday at Attica Raceway Park, the All Stars will battle another group of tough weekly competitors. Bryan Sebetto is coming off back-to-back wins while six-time track champion Byron Reed, 2011 track champion Dean Jacobs, two-time feature winner Brandon Martin, and early season winner Danny Smith will be tough. Through in possible competitors like Sam Hafertepe Jr. and Phil Gressman who each scored a win at Attica.

The All Stars have visited Attica twice in 2011 with Blaney and Shaffer each scoring victories.

Also, the Baumann Auto Group will present their Baumann Bonus Bucks at Attica giving some lucky fan the chance of taking home $500!

Finally it’s off to the only All Star event in the State of Michigan on Sunday, September 4. Former All Star rookie of the year Chad Blonde has four victories at Butler in 2011. Other winners include Ryan Ruhl, Ken Mackey.
