2012 Track Championship Scenarios

Ross Paulson of Computer Man Inc shares with us what the current point leaders need to do in order to wrap up their division’s championship this coming Saturday on Kistler Racing Products Season Championship Night.

O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 Sprint Cars:
If Chris Andrews wins then Craig Mintz would need to finish 19th or better. If Mintz were to finish 20th they would tie. It is only possible for Phil Gressman to win the track championship if Mintz does not show up.

Summit Racing Equipment UMP DIRTcar Late Models:
If Mike Bores wins then Ryan Missler would need to finish 5th or better. If Justin Chance were to win, Ryan Missler would need to finish 13th or better. In order for Larry Kingseed to have a chance, Ryan Missler would have to miss the feature.

Fremont Fence Company 305 Sprint Cars:
If Nate Dussel wins the feature, then D.J. Foos would need to finish 9th or better to win the track championship.

Bob’s Machine Shop Dirt Trucks:
If either Andy Keegan or Art Ball win the race they are the track champion, otherwise Ball needs to finish 2 spots ahead of Keegan.

For Dan Roepke Jr. to win the track championship, he needs to win the race and have Andy Keegan finish 5th or worse and Art Ball would need to finish 3rd or worse. Roepke still could win if he finishes 6 sports ahead of Keegan and 4 sports ahead of Ball in the feature.

8.25.12 Race Preview

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Attica Raceway Park will crown its 2012 champions Saturday, Aug. 25 in all four weekly racing divisions with the Kistler Racing Products Presents the Mark Keegan Classic on Season Championship Night.

To add to the excitement, it will be a double point’s night – contenders for the championships can make up a lot of ground.

The O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 Sprints will compete for the $3,000 top prize in the 30-lap championship feature ($250 to start). The Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Models, Fremont Fence 305 Sprints and Bob’s Machine Shop Dirt Trucks will also be in competition.

Craig Mintz – who has scored three wins in 2012 – has an 82 point advantage in the 410 sprint rankings as he looks for his first ever Attica championship to add to his 2010 Fremont Speedway title and 2009 Kistler Racing Products FAST (Fremont Attica Sprint Title) Championship. If he makes the A-main Saturday he all but locks up the title. However, 2009 Attica champion Chris Andrews, who has caught fire lately in the Burmeister Racing #16, has made the point’s race very interesting.

Phil Gressman sits third, 94 points out and hopes to gain some momentum going into Attica ’s final event, the Attica Ambush Presented by the Baumann Auto Group with the University of Northwestern Ohio All Star Circuit of Champions. Bryan Sebetto, who finished a very close second in Attica ’s points in 2011, sits fourth with Mike Linder rounding out the top five.

Bellevue, Ohio ’s Ryan Missler takes a slim 25 point lead into the final point’s race of 2012 as he looks to make it four Attica championships in a row. Missler recently broke back into the victory lane after over a year and half of being held winless.

Mike Bores has had a very consistent year and looks to claim his first track title as the championship could come down to the final lap. Justin Chance also is within striking distance of the championship, sitting just 57 points back in third with five-time street stock/limited late model champion Larry Kingseed 87 points out in third. Ky Harper, who scored his first career late model victory this season at Attica , is fifth in the points.

In the 305 sprints, 2010 champion D.J. Foos started the season very strong and has recorded 5 wins at Attica to hold a 41 point lead. However, defending track champion Nate Dussel has scored a pair of wins in 2012 and his consistent top five finishes has him just 41 points behind Foos.

Dustin Dinan sits third, 143 points out, while former track champion Jamie Miller and sophomore season driver Jordan Ryan rounds out the top five.

Andy Keegan leads the dirt truck point standings by just eight points. His two feature wins – the first of his career – has him looking for his first ever track title. But, veteran Art Ball, a three time dirt truck and two time street stock/limited late model champion has scored a win this season and his consistent top five finishes has him knocking on the door.

Dan Roepke Jr., in his sophomore season of racing, has scored two wins, including last week, and remains in striking distance of the championship, sitting third, just 21 points back. Brian Sorg also has a shot at the title as he is just 57 points behind. Former champion Brian Arnold rounds out the top five.

With double points on the line, every finishing position will be important as the drivers battle to finish in the top 10 in points to earn point fund money.

The event honors Mark Keegan, a 12-time 410 sprint champion who was part of the team that helped create Attica Raceway Park in 1988. Keegan had more wins at Attica than any other driver, with 56 career victories.

Gates will open Saturday at 4 p.m. with racing under way at 7 p.m. Go to www.atticaracewaypark.com for more information.

Sebetto Nears FAST Championship Repeat With Attica Win; Markham Gets First Late Model Victory; Ivy Tames FAST 305 Sprints; Roepke Earns Truck Win

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Bryan Sebetto learned a lot during his first ever Knoxville Nationals last week. The Fremont , Ohio driver took that knowledge back to Ohio and earned his fourth victory of the season Saturday at Attica Raceway Park .

The win was Sebetto’s seventh of the season as he has three victories at Fremont Speedway as well. It also increased his point lead in the $10,000-to-win Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title (FAST) Championship Series Presented by Engine Pro and KS Sales and Service. With only two events left on the FAST schedule – both coming on Sept. 8 at Fremont Speedway as the make-up from the Aug. 4 rainout and the championship finale will be held – Sebetto padded his lead with the victory on WNWO NBC Channel 24/Ohio Logistics Night. Sebetto, the 2011 FAST Champion, is trying to become the first repeat winner in the four seasons of the series.

“This thing is fast every time it hits the race track. It shows how hard these guys work and how good of a race car and race team this is. It’s not just me…it’s not just Aaron (Hammer, crew chief) or just Randy (Hammer, owner) or Gressman (Scott, owner of Gressman Powersports) with the motors it’s everything…the whole package,” said Sebetto in the Engine Pro Victory Lane beside his Crown Battery/Hammer Pallets/OC Shocks/Meggit Powder Coating/JLH General Contractors backed machine.

“Things are just going great for us this year. From our sponsors that show up every week and support us…we’re out here having fun and that’s why we are running so good,” continued Sebetto. “The FAST deal comes down to one night and it could take only one night to lose that thing. You can lose this thing as quickly as you could win it by having a bad night. I’m out here to win races and worry about points on the last night.”

Ashland, Ohio’s Ryan Markham took the lead from Larry Kingseed on lap 12 after a spirited battle involving Kingseed and Mike Bores, and went on to his first career victory in the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Models.

“The top was a little bit better tonight. Those guys were running around there and I knew if I could just get out front I could get away from them. This feels good. We’ve been trying for a long time to win up here…we’ve had a good car. We’ve been running Hilltop on Saturday nights and we won down there two weeks ago and I said I got to go to Attica …I only have a couple more shots at winning one this year. This has been a weight that’s been on my shoulders for a long time,” said Markham beside his Malcuit Racing Engines, Rocket Chassis, Body by Vi Challenge backed #5m.

“I’d like to thank Jim and Jamie Kodak…they are my part-time help. They come and help me along with Lou Bemiller, my wife, Laura, my little daughter, Emma and everyone that has a helping hand in this thing,” added Markham.

John Ivy and Paige Polyak waged a tremendous battle for the lead in 305 sprint feature, with Ivy taking the top spot on lap 14, only to watch Polyak drive under him with three laps to go before he retook the lead in the next corner. Ivy would hold off Polyak to get his first victory of the year at Attica . It was his 11th career win in the division to move him into a tie with Scott Miller for 11th on the track’s all-time win list.

“I was kind of screwing up there and missing my marks a little bit. I was getting excited…I was thinkin’ ‘man we’re finally going to get up here on the horse track and I lost my concentration a little bit. Joey (Pasch) and my brother (Scott Ivy) had this thing really, really good tonight on the bottom. Weaver (Paul) tried to take it away from me once and on that yellow I rolled up there and waived at me and he was like ‘I want to go to the bottom,’ but I wasn’t going to let him,” said Ivy beside his Fremont Fence/B&L Plumbing and Heating/Kear’s Speed Shop/Jenny’s Copper Penny/Sonny’s Machine Shop backed machine. “Kenny and Karen Clark give us everything we need. Joey and my brother have been on it. They were going to start calling me Johnny two instead of Johnny Five.”

Dan Roepke Jr. took the lead on lap five of the dirt truck feature, and never looked back as he went on to score his second win of the season and second of his career at Attica.

“Those cautions kept coming one right after another but they seemed to help us out. It’s fun here. I just like getting in the gas and hauling around the corner,” said Roepke beside his Perkins Tree Service, Johnny’s Electric, Vision Quest, Village Inn backed #88.

FAST 410 Sprints – Bryan Sebetto #24H
Rob Chaney and Phil Gressman would bring the field to the green in the 30-lap O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 Sprint feature, with Chaney grabbing the lead with Gressman, Todd Heller, Sebetto, Travis Philo, Dean Jacobs, Brandon Martin, Mike Linder and Sheldon Haudenschild in tow. As Chaney rocketed away, Sebetto would take third on lap three.

Chaney’s fast pace would put him into heavy traffic by the fifth circuit, allowing Gressman to close with Sebetto, Heller, Martin, Jacobs and Haudenschild in tow. Chaney would jump the cushion in turns three and four trying to battle through lapped traffic on lap six, and would spin in turn four, handing the lead to Gressman with Sebetto now second followed by Heller, Martin, Jacobs and Haudenschild. The car on the move was 18th starter Brian Smith, who had moved up to 10th.

Gressman and Sebetto would run nose to tail when the green re-appeared with Martin grabbing third. Sebetto would execute the perfect slide job on lap 10 to take the lead as the caution would then fly for Chaney who stopped on the back stretch, ending his night.

All hell broke loose on the ensuing restart as Sebetto rocked away, Martin tried a slide job on Gressman exiting turn four and there was slight contact with Martin getting sideways, hitting Gressman who made contact with Haudenschild, sending Gressman and Haudenschild flipping down the front stretch.

The restart order was now Sebetto, Martin, Heller, Jacobs, Smith, Philo, Byron Reed, Chris Andrews, who started 13th, and Stuart Brubaker, who started 20th. The race would go caution free the remaining 19 laps.

Sebetto would use the clear track to pull away, but his quick pace would have him into very heavy lapped traffic at the half-way point, allowing Martin to close with Heller trying to hold off Smith for third.

Sebetto’s patience would pay off as he cleared the traffic and again pulled away from Martin as Smith took third on lap 18 followed by Heller, Jacobs, Andrews, Philo, Reed, Brubaker and Craig Mintz. While Sebetto and Martin went unchallenged up front, the action from third through seventh was fantastic. Andrews would take third from Smith on lap 25 and was closing on Martin, but ran out of time. Sebetto would take the win over Martin, Andrews, Smith and Jacobs.

“I tried getting off the top down here (in turn four) one time and they (lapped cars) just drove away from me. So I just had to follow them down here and make my moves in one and two. There was a little strip of moisture I could run in getting into one and run it in hard enough to slide them,” said Sebetto. “ Knoxville was an eye-opener last week. We had a rough week…couldn’t catch a break, but we learned a lot and it showed. We came back here and right back up front we are.”

Summit UMP Late Models – Ryan Markham #5M
In the 25 lap Summit Racing Equipment Late Model feature, Larry Kingseed and John Bores would bring the field to the green. Kingseed would take the top spot over fifth starter Markham with John Bores, Brandon Perkins, Mike Bores and Garrett Krummert in tow. Kingseed would open up a slight lead as Markham, John Bores and Mike Bores were locked in a fantastic battle for second. By the sixth circuit, Kingseed’s lead was only a car length as Mike Bores, John Bores, Markham, Krummert and Cody Scott ran side-by-side and nose-to-tail for second.

The first of two cautions of the event flew on lap six for a Matt Irey spin with the running order Kingseed, Mike Bores, John Bores, Markham, Scott, Krummert, Perkins, Ryan Missler (up from his 16th starting spot) and Ky Harper. On the restart, Mike Bores would drive under Kingseed to take the lead, but Kingseed, Markham, Krummert and Scott would race to his outside and right on his rear bumper. John Bores would spin off turn four on lap 10 to bring out the final caution.

On the ensuing restart, Kingseed would drive back by Bores for the lead and a lap later Markham drove around both to take the top spot. With 10 laps to go, Markham began to open up his lead while the crowd was entertained with the battle for second between, Kingseed, Mike Bores, Scott, Krummert and Missler. Mike Bores would finally take second on lap 16 with Kingseed, Scott and Krummert still locked in a fierce battle for third. That battle would continue the rest of the race.

Markham would drive to the checkered with Bores holding off Krummert the final two laps for second while Scott and Missler would round out the top five.

FAST 305 Sprints – John Ivy #8I
In the 25-lap Fremont Fence 305 Sprint feature, Nate Reeser and Alvin Roepke would bring the field to the green. Reeser would take the lead while fourth place starter Paige Polyak took second from Roepke with Paul Weaver, John Ivy, Dustin Stroup, Junior Felver and D.J. Foos in tow.

Reeser and Polyak would race side by side for the lead over the first five laps before Polyak would take the top spot on lap six with Weaver and Ivy locked in a good battle for third. The first of only two cautions in the event would fly on lap six for a tangle involving Jeremy Duposki, Matt Merrill and Mike Dussel.

On the restart, Polyak would pull away from Reeser while Ivy, Weaver and Foos would battle for second. Ivy would take the runner-up spot on lap nine with Weaver and Foos continuing to pressure. Ivy would race under Polyak on lap 13 and would take the lead on lap 14.

Just as the leaders were set to hit heavy lapped traffic, Zack Kramer would stop on the back stretch to bring out the final caution on lap 15. Now with a clear track, Ivy would pull away slightly over Polyak who had her hands full with Weaver and Foos. Weaver would actually take second on lap 16, but Polyak would retake the spot a lap later.

With three laps to go, Polyak had caught Ivy and race to his inside in turns one and two. But, Ivy would drive back under to retain the lead in the next corner and then hit his marks perfectly the final two circuits for the win. Polyak, Weaver, Foos and Stroup would round out the top five in a very entertaining race.

BMS Dirt Trucks – Dan Roepke Jr. #88
In the Bob’s Machine Shop Dirt Truck feature, Tony Siferd and Kyle Cline would bring the field to the green, but a Willie Keegan spin would necessitate a complete restart. Siferd would take the lead when the green came back out as Cline applied pressure with Dustin Keegan, Dwight Waltermeier and Art Ball in tow. After two laps were recorded, Andrew Lutman would bring out the caution with the running order Siferd, Dustin Keegan, Dan Roepke Jr., Cline, Chuck Roelle, Andy Keegan and Ball.

After another lap was complete, Kent Brewer would bring out the caution on lap four, just as Dustin Keegan and Roepke were racing with Siferd for the lead. As Roepke drove under Siferd for the lead, Keegan and Siferd would make contact, sending Siferd spinning with Keegan being sent to the tail for rough driving.

On the restart Roepke would pull away from Cline, Roelle, Andy Keegan and Ball. As Roepke raced into lapped traffic with five laps to go, Roelle took second from Cline. Another caution would fly as Darrin Basinger got crossed up as the leaders were working to lap him, collecting Brian Sorg. Roelle would go pit side to change a flat tire.

With a clear track, Roepke would pull away as Cline ran second with Ball, Andy Keegan, Brian Arnold and Brad Mitten in tow. As Roepke exited turn four for the checkered, Cline would spin in turn four, collecting several trucks as Ball, Andy Keegan, Mitten and Brian Melnek Jr. would round out the top five.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Saturday, Aug. 25 for the Baumann Auto Group Presents the Mark Keegan Classic Championship Night. It will be double points for all four divisions to see who is crowned the Attica Raceway Park track champions for 2012.
