Dussel Claims 5th Win Of The Season For Rich Attica 305 Sprint Event; Schlenk Earns 3rd Late Model Win; Valenti Gets Truck Victory

The defending Attica Raceway Park 305 sprint track champion traded several sliders with John Ivy before taking the lead for good with four laps to go to take the $1,200 Engine Builders Challenge at Attica Raceway Park Friday night.

The win was the fifth of the season at Attica for Dussel who now owns 10 career 305 sprint victories at “ Ohio ’s Finest Racing” speedplant. Coupled with the four wins he has at Fremont in 2013, Dussel’s nine victories in 2013 ranks him among the top 10 in the entire country in sprint car wins.

‘If that wasn’t an awesome show for the fans I don’t know what is. It was slicing and dicing between Ivy, myself and Paul (Weaver). Those guys are just so much fun to race with because you can run them tight and they will run you clean,” said Dussel beside his Kylynn Manufacturing/Berrier Fabrication/Dussel Welding/Conrad Transport/Gressman Powersports/Kistler Racing Products/Design Graphics Group backed #1.

“Everything is clicking. Shane Stewart said something on Twitter the other day that people think its just one thing when you are running well but it’s absolutely the entire package. The motor is awesome…Scott (Gressman) kind of apologized the last year he was so focused on the 410 program that he kind of just got our stuff together. But, he spent a lot of time in the off season really focusing on it and I can tell a huge difference,” continued Dussel. “This money will go to fixing our trailer. That storm kind of destroyed it this week. Hats off to Bill Berrier who busted his butt the last two and half days working to have us a trailer.”

Mike Bores and Rusty Schlenk ran side by side the first 16 laps of Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Model feature before Schlenk switched grooves and drove into the lead and away from the field for his third win of the season at Attica . It was his 17th career victory to lead the track in all-time late model wins.

But, it wasn’t that easy for Schlenk to find victory lane. The transmission in his Lazer Chassis/Kercher Engines/Micro-Armor Lubricants/Main & Company/Zeller Automotive backed #91 suffered some sort of problem at the beginning of the race and after taking the checkered and crossing the scales Schlenk couldn’t get the car out of gear to drive to the Engine Pro Victory Lane.

“I’ve never had to get a ride from a four-wheeler to the horse track before. The car was really good. Honestly the transmission broke as we took the green flag on the first lap. Actually it was before that. I don’t know if you noticed me hang back there at the beginning. I thought I was going to have to pull off because it was jammed into gear. I was taking it easy and tried to be as smooth as possible to make sure nothing else broke. Once I got out front and got up top to keep my momentum going it was easier on the transmission,” said Schlenk.

In the non-stop 15 lap Bob’s Machine Shop Dirt Truck feature Dan Roepke Jr. and Shawn Valenti raced side by side literally the first 12 laps of the event. Valenti would pull away the last two laps to score his third career Attica dirt truck win.

“That was a lot of fun. I have to give Daniel all the credit for racing me clean. I have to thank Jeff Babock… he put this deal together kind of last minute and I’m having a lot of fun,” said Valenti.

Foster Auto Body 305 Sprints – Nate Dussel #1
In the 30 lap feature for the Foster’s Auto Body 305 Sprints, Ivy and Steve Rando would bring the field to the green as they won the pair of Computer Man Dashes. Ivy would drive into the lead while Rando had his hands full with Dussel, Paul Weaver, Seth Schneider and Jordan Ryan. Ivy would hit lapped traffic by lap nine as Dussel drove into second with Rando, Weaver, Ryan, Jimmy Colvin, T.J. Michael and Jason Keckler in tow.

Dussel quickly closed on Ivy and executed a flier for the lead on lap 12. Ivy would return the favor the next lap as they drove into heavy lapped traffic. Weaver would take second at the half-way point and closed on Ivy when the caution flew for a Dan Hammond spin on lap 16. On the restart, it was a three car battle for the lead between Ivy, Weaver and Dussel with Ryan, Rando, Colvin and Keckler in pursuit. Weaver would slide back a bit on lap 18 as Dussel regained second and Ryan moved into third.

With 10 laps to go Ivy held a slim lead over Dussel and Ryan with Weaver, Rando, Colvin, Keckler, Michael and 15th place starter Dustin Dinan giving chase. The order remained that way for the next four laps before Dussel kicked in the after-burners and closed on Ivy. With four to go, the second caution of the feature flew for Keckler who spun in turn two.

On the restart Dussel drove under Ivy and slid in front with Ryan, Weaver and Rando in pursuit. Once in the lead and a clear track, Dussel pulled away as Ryan battled with Ivy for second, taking the runner-up spot on lap 28. Dussel would drive to the win over Ryan, Ivy, Weaver and Rando.

Summit Racing Equipment Late Models – Rusty Schlenk #91
Bores and Schlenk would pace the field to the green for the 25-lap late model feature that saw several cautions slow the pace. Bores would blast the high line for the lead with Schlenk constantly running to his inside while Devin Shiels, George Lee and Chris Keller in pursuit. The first of seven cautions would fly on lap four for a Cody Scott spin with the running order Bores, Schlenk. Shiels, Lee, Keller, Dusty Moore, John Mayes Jr. and Ryan Missler.

Following another lap and a caution for debris, Bores would continue to lead Schlenk, Shiels, Keller, Lee and Moore. But, the car on the move was Ky Harper who started 16th and was up to 8th by lap 8 when the caution flew for Rocky Owens and Matt Irey who both spun in turn three. On the restart Bores and Schlenk resumed their side by side battle as Shiels had his hands full with Keller while Harper drove into 7th.

After several laps of door to door racing, Schlenk was able to take the lead on lap 16. The caution would fly a lap later for a Nate Potts and Coby Bartram incident. During the caution Keller, who had been running third, went to the pits. The running order on the restart was Schlenk, Shiels, Bores, Lee, Harper, Moore , Missler and Wayne Maffett Jr. Two laps later and the caution flew again for Scott, ending his night. Another two laps and a caution for Larry Kingseed who came to a rest in turn one.

With four laps to go, Schlenk had Shiels, Harper, Bores, Moore , Lee and Missler on his tail. When the green flew, Schlenk pulled away and drove to the win over Shiels, Harper, Moore and Bores.

Bob’s Machine Shop Dirt Trucks – Shawn Valenti #7
Roepke and Art Ball would bring the field to the green for the dirt truck feature with Roepke gaining the upper hand as third starter Valenti rocketed into second and drove to the leader’s inside. Roepke and Valenti would virtually run side by side around the entire race track over the first 12 laps of the 15-lap affair with Ball running third while Brian Melnek, Tony Siferd, Jimmy McGrath Jr., Dustin Keegan, John Ivy and Brian Sorg putting on a whale of race for fourth.

Valenti would take the lead by a bumper on lap seven but Roepke regained the slight advantage the next lap as Valenti drove back into the lead on lap nine. Meanwhile Ball continued to run a comfortable third as Ivy moved into fourth by lap 10 with Melnek, Keegan and McGrath in pursuit. With three laps to go Valenti started to pull away from Roepke ever so slightly as Ivy took third.

Valenti would take the checkered over Roepke, Ivy, Ball and McGrath.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, July 19 as Central Ohio Farmers and Summit Racing Equipment Present the UMP Summer Nationals Hell Tour for the late models and modifieds. The 410 sprints will also be in action for a $3,000 to win affair.

Mintz Finds Attica Victory Lane; Babcock Gets Exciting Late Model Victory; Dussel Earns Fourth 305 Win; Ivy Tames Trucks

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Two weeks ago it looked like Craig Mintz was going to take the win to open up the Ohio Sprint Speedweek at Attica Raceway Park . But, a part failure in the steering sent him to the pits after he led the first 13 laps. The Gibsonburg, Ohio driver was very dejected…another potential win had slipped away.

But, they say racers have to have short memories and Mintz, Attica ’s 2012 champion of the O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 Sprints, put that disappointment behind him and came back Friday to lead all 30 laps to claim his first victory of the season on Kear’s Speed Shop Fan Appreciation Night. It wasn’t easy for Mintz as Danny Holtgraver closed late in the race and drove to Mintz’ inside as they drove to the checkers.

“It’s been like 21 months since we won a race. These guys behind me have dug hard and dug hard. We’ve run second a lot and I recently got married so we said that bridesmaid thing but I’ll tell you what that was getting old,” said Mintz beside his Real Geese Decoys/R2C Filters/KS Sales and Service/Erie Shore Propane/Design Graphics Group/Keller Chevrolet/Walby Construction/Story Equipment backed #09.

“I was missing my marks in the back majorly. It was everything I could do just to keep it there. We were really good early and just kind of started fading. It was just everything I could do to hold on. I was just waiting for them to throw that checkered,” added Mintz of his ninth career Attica victory.

Wayne, Ohio ’s Jeff Babcock took the lead from Ryan Missler with just two laps to go and went on to score his first victory of the season at Attica in the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Models. It was Babcock’s fourth career Attica victory.

“I thought the top was going to be good and then those guys got going on the bottom and I thought I’d better move back down to the bottom. It was kind of rough and choppy down there but if you kept your foot plugged in her it went through it,” said Babcock beside his Best Performance Motorsports/Bulk Material Lift.com/Professional Drywall/Craig Miller Trucking backed #1.

“Ryan (Missler) runs good here…he’s always tough to beat. The bottom just kept getting better and better and better and the top was fading away…it was a bunch of marbles up there and that hurt him,” continued Babcock. “I have to thank Shane and Jennifer Halcomb for putting this team together.”

In the Foster’s Auto Body 305 Sprints Nate Dussel overcame some engine woes earlier in the night to lead all 25 laps to record his fourth win of the season at Attica. Dussel has eight feature wins total for 2013 including four at Fremont Speedway. It was the ninth win of his career at Attica .

“In hot laps we thought we had a blowed up motor but I have a great crew around me. They tore the motor apart even with Scott (Gressman) not here. They figured out what was wrong with it and got it back together and here we are,” said Dussel beside his Kylynn Manufacturing/Berrier Fabrication/Gressman Powersports/Conrad Transportation backed #1.

“I want to thank all the fans for sticking around tonight for our feature. You don’t know how much it means to the 305 guys and truck guys when you stick around,” continued Dussel. “I told myself I wasn’t going to let Jordan (Ryan) pass me on the bottom cause that’s where I figured he was going to be. There was a good chance I was going to mess myself up and Jordan was going to sneak by. But I tried the middle and it worked out.”

In the 15-lap Bob’s Machine Shop Dirt Truck feature, Fremont , Ohio ’s John Ivy held off Daniel Roepke to score his second win of the season. Ivy also has six truck wins at Fremont Speedway this season.

“Charlie and Craig have this thing rolling pretty good right now,” said Ivy beside his Diversified Machining/ Level Performance/Sonny’s Machine Shop backed #00. “I’m just having a ball out there.”

O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 Sprints – Craig Mintz #09
Caleb Griffith and Mintz would pace the field to the green for the 30-lap 410 sprint main with Mintz grabbing the lead while Griffith, Danny Holtgraver, Stuart Brubaker, Brandon Martin, Brian Smith and Brian Lay gave chase. Holtgraver would take second on lap three but couldn’t close on Mintz as he raced into lapped traffic with just six circuits recorded.

Meanwhile Griffith was locked in a great battle for third with Martin as Lay and 12th starter D.J. Foos closed. On lap 16 the red would fly for a Troy Kingan flip as he collected Martin. The restart order was Mintz, Holtgraver, Lay, Griffith , Foos, Duane Zablocki and Cole Duncan. With a clear track, Mintz would pull away as Holtgraver had his hands full with Lay while Foos grabbed fourth.

It looked like Mintz had things well in hand, but as the laps ticked off, Holtgraver was eating into his lead and when they took the white flag Holtgraver was right on Mintz’ rear bumper. As they blasted into turns three and four for the final time, Holtgraver tried to race to Mintz’ inside, but couldn’t get the pass completed. Lay would come home third with Foos and Duncan rounding out the top five.

Summit Racing Equipment Late Models – Jeff Babcock #1
In the 25-lap late model main, Wayne Maffett Jr. and Ryan Markham brought the field to the green with Maffett leading the first lap while third starter Missler drove into second with Markham, Babcock, Nate Potts, Devin Shiels and Dusty Moore in pursuit.

Missler would drive into the lead on lap two as Maffett had his hands full with Markham . Potts and Rick Bond would spin on lap three with Missler leading Maffett, Markham, Babcock, Shiels, Moore and John Mayes Jr. Babcock would drive into third on lap five just as the caution flew for a Cody Scott spin.

Missler would drive away from Maffett on the restart while Babcock, Markham and Shiels were battling hard for third. Scott would spin again on lap 10 with the running order Missler, Maffett, Markham, Babcock, Shiels, Mayes and Matt Irey. When the green flew again Missler pulled away as Maffett, Babcock and Markham waged war for second. Dusty Moore would come to a stop on lap 14 for the event’s final caution.

When the green flew Missler launched out to a 1.8 second lead while Maffett, Babcock and Markham continued their great battle for second. They would be joined a few laps later by Mayes. With five laps to go, Babcock had found his groove on the bottom and was closing on Missler. The pair raced side by side the next three laps before Babcock would drive under Missler for the lead on lap 23. Babcock would take the win over Missler, Mayes, Markham and Shiels.

Dussel and Jordan Ryan would bring the field to the green for the 25-lap 305 sprint feature with Dussel blasting to the lead with Ryan, Dustin Dinan, Alvin Roepke, Tyler Gunn and Jason Keckler in tow. Dussel would set a blistering pace and would hit heavy lapped traffic by the 10th circuit, allowing Ryan to close with Dinan, Roepke, Gunn and Keckler giving chase. The only caution would fly for debris on lap 16.

Now with a clear track, Dussel pulled away from Ryan who had his hands full with Dinan as Keckler took fourth on lap 17. Dinan would grab second on lap 19 but Ryan regained the position on lap 21. With three laps to go Dussel had built his lead to nearly three seconds as Keckler drove around Dinan into third.

Dussel would take the win over Ryan, Keckler, Dinan and Steve Rando.

Bob’s Machine Shop Dirt Trucks – John Ivy #00
Ivy and Keith Sorg brought the dirt truck field to the green with Ivy taking the lead over fourth starter Kyle Cline, Roepke, Dustin Keegan and Shawn Valenti. After one lap was scored Tony Siferd would spin. On the restart Ivy continued to lead as Cline was locked in a heated battle with Roepke and Valenti. Roepke would take second on lap four with Valenti grabbing third by lap 7.

The final caution flew on lap nine for a stalled Jeff Warnick. Ivy could not shake Roepke or Valenti as they stayed close while Cline, Keegan and Brian Sorg gave chase. Ivy never made a mistake the remainder of the race and drove to the win over Roepke, Valenti, Cline and Brian Sorg.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, July 12 as UUI and Bazel Race Fuels Present the 305 Engine Builder’s Classic with the late models and dirt trucks also in action.

Chris Andrews Opens Ohio Speedweek With First Career UNOH All Star Win; Schlenk Earns Late Model Victory at Attica

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) There’s just something about Attica Raceway Park and Ohio Sprint Speedweek that brings out the best in racers.

Last year it was Danny Holtgraver who scored his first career University of Northwestern Ohio All Star Circuit of Champions win at Attica to open speedweek. This year, Sandusky, Ohio’s Chris Andrews earned the biggest win of his career, holding off three time UNOH All Star champion Dale Blaney to score his first ever series win to begin the 31st Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek.

Andrews, the 2009 Attica champion, has struggled somewhat this year, but with four laps to go, he kept his composure on a restart and went on to score his four career win at Attica.

“It felt like I drove to California and back that’s how long that race felt like. Especially that last lap…I just wanted to get that over with,” said Andrews beside his Burmeister Racing/K&N Filters/Lucas Oil/Schiets Motorsports/Kistler Racing Products/Adkins Sanitation backed machine.

“The car was good and the track wasn’t looking too good earlier today but they really did a good job smoothing it out and making it racy. Hats off to my guys…we haven’t been running too well this season. Paul Kistler has given us awesome motors and Mikey (Sommers) spinning the wrenches and Sonny and Sharon Burmeister…I can’t thank them enough for the ride,” added Andrews.

“I knew I was in his (Blaney’s) territory and as long as I stayed there I knew I minimized my chances of him passing me. Dale’s the best on the bottom and I was just trying to hit my marks,” concluded Andrews in the Engine Pro Victory Lane.

For Blaney, he was catching Andrews in the middle of the race, but just couldn’t get there as cautions interrupted his momentum. Then he was locked in a great battle with Tim Shaffer at the end of the race for second.

“In open traffic he (Andrews) was a little better than we were. I felt I was as good and getting better there in the middle of the race. I felt like I was maybe gaining a little bit on him. But, he ran a good race and never made a mistake. I was hoping to get to traffic and never did. It was all I could do to hang on to second. I know Shaffer was there and it was a good race,” said Blaney beside his Ti22 Performance/GF1 Chassis #2.

Caleb Griffith would come on strong at the end of the race to score a third place finish.

“I really have to give it to my crew. We timed in sixth which is really good for us and then the driver went out and laid an egg in the heat race so we had to come back from adversity all night. Had to come out of the B and blew a brake line in the B…it was just a thrash. To come from where we were to run third is a great night for us,” said Griffith beside his Al Davis Carpet/McDonald’s Restaurant/Young’s Batter Mix/Crown Battery #40DD.

In the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Models, McClure, Ohio’s Rusty Schlenk held off Matt Miller following a restart with three laps to go, to claim his second Attica win of the season. It is the 16th of his career at Attica.

“I was too tight to run around the top. Thank goodness I was able to use the high side to get around lapped traffic. I had to stick to the bottom once I got into the clear,” said Schlenk about his Lazer Chassis/Micro-Armor Lubricants/Main & Company/Zeller Automotive backed #91. “He (Miller) is definitely one of the people I hate having behind me on a restart because he is so good on the starts. I expected him to try and roll me on the top…he usually does. I guess I kept my momentum up enough to keep him back there. I was peaking over my shoulder coming to the checkers.”

“We just got this new car out. I’m glad it’s working. We have the Summer Nationals coming here and I’d like to win that thing. Every time we race in that I end up breaking something. I have to thank my crew. We completely destroyed the front of the car and had to put it all back together and if it wasn’t for them guys we wouldn’t have made it out there for the feature,” added Schlenk.

UNOH All Star Sprints – Chris Andrews #16
D.J. Foos and Andrews would bring the field to the green for the 40 lap feature, but it was defending track champion Craig Mintz who shot into the lead from his fourth starting spot. Mintz began to pull away slightly as Andrews, Foos, Blaney, Shaffer and Stuart Williams gave chase.

Brad Sweet would coast to a stop on lap four to bring out the yellow flag and when the green flew again Blaney snuck under Foos for third. Foos would spin in turn four on lap six and on the ensuing restart, Andrews drove to Mintz’ outside to challenge with Blaney, Shaffer, Williams and Rob Chaney in tow.

Just as Mintz was set to hit heavy lapped traffic on lap 13, something broke in the front of his car and he stopped exiting turn four, handing the lead to Andrews. A lap and a caution for Brad Bowman who suffered a flat tire. The restart running order was Andrews, Blaney, Shaffer, Brand Martin (up from 15th), Chaney, Greg Wilson, Williams and Griffith.

Cap Henry would spin on lap 17 with the running order Andrews, Blaney, Shaffer, Martin, Chaney and Wilson. The running order stayed that way until Caleb Helms spun on lap 24. On the ensuing restart Bryan Sebetto smacked the fourth turn fence, bringing out another caution which led to a red flag fuel stop. The restart running order was Andrews, Blaney, Shaffer, Martin, Wilson and Griffith. Wilson and Griffith would get around Martin on lap 28.

Sheldon Haudenschild would spin on lap 29 just as Blaney and Shaffer were inching closer to Andrews. On the restart Andrews would pull away slightly while Blaney and Shaffer battled hard for second while Griffith moved into fourth as Martin drove back by Wilson for fifth. Someone clipped one of the infield tires on lap 36, necessitating another caution.

That gave Blaney and Shaffer one last shot at Andrews. On the restart Andrews stuck to his bottom grove as Brandon Martin executed a bonsai move and nearly took out Shaffer and Griffith. Griffith moved into third with Martin, Dean Jacobs and Shaffer regrouping.

Andrews would hit his marks perfectly the last four laps to take the win. Blaney, Griffith, Martin and Jacobs would round out the top five.

Summit UMP Late Models – Rusty Schlenk #91
Mike Bores and Brandon Thirlby would bring the late model field to the green for their 25-lap feature with Bores taking the lead. Schlenk, who started 7th, quickly moved into second and immediately challenged Bores by just the second lap with Thirlby, 11th starter Brad Malcuit and Miller in tow. Schlenk would drive under Bores for the top spot on lap three with Miller charging into third. Josh Haynes would spin to bring the action to a halt.

On the ensuing restart Schlenk pulled away as Bores had to battle with Miller while Malcuit moved into fourth over Thirlby, Matt Irey, John Mayes Jr. and Ryan Missler. As Schlenk drove into lapped traffic on lap 10, Miller, who took second on lap five, began to close as Malcuit drove into third, bringing Thirlby to fourth and Bores back to fifth. The car on the move was last week’s feature winner Cody Scott who had drive from his 20th starting spot – last – to 9th.

Schlenk hit heavy lapped traffic with nine laps to go and Miller closed as Malcuit ran comfortably in third. John Bores would spin on lap 21, giving Schlenk a clear track. But, after a lap was recorded Tim Sabo would stop in turn four to bunch up the field once again. When the green reappeared, Miller really pressured Schlenk as they pulled away from Malcuit, Thirlby, Scott and Mike Bores.

As they raced out of turn four for the checkered, Miller dove to Schlenk’s inside and lost by half a car length at the start-finish line. Malcuit, Thirlby and Scott would round out the top five.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, July 5 for Kear’s Speed Shop Fan Appreciation Night. General admission is just $10 for adults with the 410 sprints, 305 sprints, late models and dirt trucks in action.
