Cap Henry drives to Attica FAST win; Drown captures 3rd late model victory; Miller rebounds for 305 sprint win

By Brian Liskai Attica, Ohio – Cap Henry has had a fast sprint car all season. For one reason or another – bad qualifying run or bad pill draw or some other little problem saw him have to pass a lot of cars during a night of racing only to be kept from victory lane.

That all changed Friday on American Powersports Night at Attica Raceway Park. The Bellevue, Ohio driver blasted under Dale Blaney on the second lap of the feature and then held off a late race challenge to capture the win in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 sprint feature. It was his third career win at Attica.

And in terms of the big picture, it gave Henry valuable points towards the $10,000 Attica point championship and the $10,000 Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title (FAST) Championship Series payday. Henry came into the night sixth in the Attica points and fourth in the FAST standings.

“I could hear Dale up top on the straight-aways and I actually did it (move to the top) once before we got to traffic and I saw him kind of tuck up under there but he couldn’t get enough drive to pass me. So I was like well if we have to go up there we can. It came down to traffic and I kind of had to make things happen there stopping guys into one. But hey, it worked out,” said Henry beside his Genzman Racing/Level Performance/Ludwig Propane/Kear’s Speed Shop/Handy Grafix/J&J Auto Racing backed machine.

“It’s hard to win races starting 20th but these guys…Jamie, Guy, Ryan….they all have been working hard all year and gave me great cars from the get-go. We had to finally just capitalize on it,” continued Henry.

“On that last restart I could feel Dale shoving me so I just jammed on the brake and then matted it and figured we were okay,” concluded Henry.

Wooster, Ohio’s Doug Drown survived several late race cautions and drove to his third win of the season in the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Models. It was his ninth career Attica victory, moving him into fifth on the track’s all-time win list for the division.

“I was real comfortable in the middle and I know that’s not usually where you run here. The top was just too far out and the bottom I was too tight. The car was phenomenal. Dave Miller, Steve Hershberger, my brother Dan…just a phenomenal job. We are clicking and when you have good people around you good things happen. Leroy Hall providing things for us and great sponsorship from Halls Auto Sales, Kar Konnection, Wooster Glass and all the other products sponsors…just makes my job easier,” said Drown in the Engine Pro Victory Lane.

Fremont, Ohio’s Jamie Miller has been knocking on the door all season in the Foster’s Auto Body 305 Sprints. And he nearly gave another win away Friday. Miller, a former track champion, battled defending track champion Jordan Ryan the last six laps and slipped off the high side of turn two with five laps to go as Ryan drove to the lead. But, Miller regained his composure and blasted to the cushion and drive back by Ryan on the white flag lap and went on to record his 10th career win at Attica.

The win will also tighten up the point race for the JLH General Contractor FAST 305 Sprint Series title.

“That happens when you get a little old and rusty. Luckily he left me enough room…he left it open and I was faster than he (Ryan) was for a change and able to pull it out,” said Miller beside his Advanced Industrial Services/Fostoria Mod Shop/Quarterback Transportation/Western Lake Erie Insulation Industry/Pioneer Quick Lube/Scott’s Lawn Care backed machine.

“It’s not easy running up there. It’s bitten me in the butt more than once. There’s no where to go when you screw up up there. We got fortunate tonight and had a good run and thank God. We put this deal together over the winter and we’ve been fast every night and finally to get a win is great,” said Miller adding thanks to car owner Tim Merrill.

Max Stambaugh and Dale Blaney would bring the field to green for the 30-lap $3,000-to-win 410 sprint feature. Before a lap could be completed Broc Martin would spin. On the second green Blaney would bolt into the lead with fourth starter Henry grabbing second while rookie Tyler Gunn, Stambaugh, Stuart Brubaker, Rob Chaney and Dean Jacobs gave chase.

Henry would drive to the bottom of turns three and four on lap two to take the lead. By lap six Brubaker would drive into third and with a tremendous battle for fourth involving Gunn, Jacobs and Chaney. On lap 10 the only other caution of the feature would fly when Caleb Griffith stopped on the back stretch.

On the ensuing restart Blaney challenged Henry with Brubaker no locked in a tremendous battle for third with Chaney and Jacobs. Once Henry got his momentum rolling he pulled away slightly from Blaney as Brubaker and Chaney swapped the third position lap after lap.

As Henry began to close on the back of the pack, Blaney closed and Henry decided to move to the top of the track and it worked out. The leaders raced into traffic with seven laps to go with the running order Henry, Blaney, Brubaker, Chaney, Jacobs, Byron Reed and Tim Shaffer.

With five laps to go Henry had a two car length lead over Blaney who now had his hands full with Brubaker. Henry made some daring moves in traffic and drove to the win over Blaney, Brubaker, Chaney and Reed.

In the 25-lap late model feature Cody Scott and Drown paced the field with Drown gaining the advantage when the green flew. Scott would stay close with Rusty Schlenk, Ken Hahn and Ryan Markham also in contention. The first caution flew after two laps were scored with Drown leading Scott, Schlenk, Hahn, Markham, Larry Kingseed, Mike Bores, Matt Westfall and Ryan Missler.

When the green flew again so did Drown, pulling away but another caution on lap three involving Doug Baird, Ben Mott and Mitch Caskey would stop halt his progress. On the restart Drown rocketed away from Scott while Hahn and Markham battled for third.

Just as the leaders caught the back of the field, Scott would encounter mechanical woes on lap 10 and would stop to bring out another caution. On the ensuing restart Drown now had competition from Markham and Schlenk. With 12 laps recorded Westfall would spin.

Again on the restart Drown was able to put some distance between himself and the battle for second between Markham and Schlenk. All hell broke loose on lap 13 as a three car crash resulted in John Bores and Caskey getting into the front stretch catch fence and getting upside down as Baird also was involved. No one was hurt but a lengthy delay ensured as the debris was cleaned up and track workers made sure the fence was safe.

Drown pulled away again on the restart with Markham and Schlenk resuming their side-by-side battle for second with Kingseed, Mike Bores, Chris Keller (up from 16th) and Dave Hornikel in pursuit. With five laps to go the battle for sixth resulted in a three car incident involving Kingseed, Hornikel and Matt Irey.

Drown would pull away the final five laps for the win with Schlenk getting by Markham in the closing laps for second. Behind Markham Keller and Mike Bores would round out the top five.

Kyle Capodice and Dan McCarron made up the front row of the 25 lap 305 sprint feature with Capodice gaining the upper hand when the green flew. McCarron would challenge while Miller ran third followed by Tyler Street, Alvin Roepke and Jordan Ryan.

McCarron would take the lead on lap three with Miller driving to his outside to challenge with Capodice also involved. Miller would blast away at the top cushion to take the lad on lap four with McCarron, Capodice, Ryan, Street, Steve Rando, Bobby Clark and Roepke giving chase.

The caution would fly on lap seven for a Kyle Farmer spin. On the ensuing restart Paul Weaver would spin. When the green flew again Miller drove away from McCarron with Ryan moving into third. Ryan would drive under McCarron for second on lap 13 just before the caution flew for another Farmer spin.

When the green flew Ryan drove to Miller’s inside with Rando grabbing third from McCarron with Clark, Capodice, John Ivy and Seth Schneider in pursuit. By lap 19 Ryan was mounting a challenge for the lead when the final caution flew for a stalled Brian Gibbs.

On the restart Miller blasted away to the top again with Ryan racing to his inside. Miller would slip off the banking exiting turn two allowing Ryan to drive into the lead on lap 21. Ryan would lead the next three circuits before Miller regained his momentum and drove back around the outside for the lead as the white flag flew.

Miller would take the checkers over Ryan, Rando, Clark and McCarron.

Racing will resume at Attica Raceway Park on Friday, May 29 when the World of Outlaw Sprint Series comes to town for the $10,000-to-win Kistler Engines Classic. Reserve seats are still available by going to www.atticaracewaypark.com or calling 419-680-5606.

Weaver takes the loot in 305 Engine Builders Challenge at Attica; Drown gets 2nd late model victory; Roepke back in truck win column

By Brian Liskai Attica, Ohio – Paul Weaver didn’t like how his season started. So, the Fremont, Ohio veteran put together a different 305 sprint car and it paid off as he led all 30 laps for the $1,200 pay day at Attica Raceway Park Friday in the Engine Builders’ Challenge presented by Level Performance and Gressman Powersports.

“I just knew I wasn’t getting off the bottom. I learned my lesson last year racing with Jordan (Ryan). This feels great especially after struggling all summer long. I bought a car this winter that I had run a couple of years ago but no luck and put this one back together and it looks like we’ll keep this one going,” said Weaver beside his Schiets Motorsports/Tender Touch Car Wash/Weaver Performance/Hampshire Racing Engines/Fostoria Mod Shop/M&L Excavating/Buckeye Mobile Coating backed machine.

It was Weaver’s 33rd career 305 sprint win at Attica as he sits atop the all-time win list at the track.

Last week Doug Drown was involved in an on-track altercation with another driver and ended his night in the pits with a broken race car. To make matters worse, the Wooster, Ohio driver was sick all week. But, he was able to leave put all that behind him as he held off a charging Rusty Schlenk to record his second win of the season in the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Models. It is his eighth career win at Attica and opens the Attica/Wayne County Speedway Late Model Challenge Series.

“Last week was an idiot move on my part last week. I definitely shouldn’t have been like that. I apologize to my fans and even the ones who aren’t my fans. That’s no way to act. My temper got the best of me. But this definitely makes up for it. Getting the win last week at Wayne County and now this,” said Drown beside his Halls Auto Sales/Kar Konnections/Malcuit Racing Engines/Nationwide Vehicle Protection/Wooster Glass backed machine.

“I’ve been sick all week. I haven’t even seen the race car until today. Dave Miller came over Thursday and got everything ready. My brother, Dan, Steve with the tires, and obviously Leroy for providing everything for us to be able to do what we do. Just very fortunate. I have to thank my wife for taking care of me all week and finally getting me to the hospital,” added Drown.

“The track was great. I didn’t know where to go and when I saw Rusty (Schlenk) in second…he’s so experienced here. He can find grip where most people can’t. That’s why I went to the top. I figured if he goes to the bottom at least I could see him coming. Instead of getting caught by surprise on the outside,” concluded Drown.

Dan Roepke Sr. came out of retirement to grab the win in the Fremont Fence Dirt Truck feature. It was his second career win at Attica. He took over the truck that his son had drive in the past

“He had a wedding to go to tonight…he’s out doing other things. I’m glad he’s not here to night…I’ll take it,” said Roepke. “I have to thank my wife…she puts up with this.”

Weaver and John Ivy would bring the field to green for the 30-lap 305 sprint feature but Bobby Clark would spin before a lap could be completed. When the green flew Weaver took the lead over Ivy, T.J. Michael, Seth Schneider, Alvin Roepke, Jordan Ryan and Luke Griffith.

Michael would get by Ivy for second on the fourth lap with Roepke moving into fourth. Roepke would take third on lap six when the caution flew for a Steve Rando spin. Several cars were working their way to the front including Rick Peterson who drove from 18th to 10th and Kyle Capodice who was up to 12th from 22nd.

Weaver would pull away when the green came back out with Michael staying close while Roepke and Ivy locked up in a good battle for third. With 10 laps in another car on the move was Nate Dussel who started ninth and was up to fourth. Dussel would drive around Roepke for third on the next lap and immediately challenged Michael for second.

Weaver would catch the back of the field on lap 17 and that allowed Michael, Dussel and Roepke to close with Schneider, Ryan, Capodice and Ivy in tow. With 7 laps to go Dussel drove into second and closed to within a car length of Weaver.

Weaver picked the right places on the track to dispose of lapped cars and drove away the final four laps. He would take the checkers over Dussel, Michael, Roepke and Ryan.

Drown and Dave Hornikel paced the field in the 25-lap late model feature that would see only one caution flag, that for debris on lap 12.

Hornikel would get the jump on Drown to lead the first lap with Chris Keller, Schlenk, Ryan Markham and Greg Haskell in pursuit. Drown drove around Hornikel for the lead on lap 2 but Hornikel continued to race hard to his inside with Keller joining the fray on lap three.

Keller took second on lap four, but would slide off the track a lap later, moving Hornikel back to the runner-up spot with Schlenk, Larry Kingseed, Markham and Matt Irey staying close. Schlenk would pressure Hornikel for second and would take the spot on lap eight.

Meanwhile Drown had built a sizeable lead and the action for fourth was exciting involving Markham, Irey, Kingseed and Mike Bores. Drown drove into heavy lapped traffic by lap 11 with Schlenk and Hornikel closing.

The debris caution came out on lap 12, giving Drown a clear track. When the green flew he could not shake Schlenk who stayed glued to the leader’s rear bumper. Hornikel would continue to run third with Irey finally winning the battle for fourth with Markham, Bores and Rocky Owens in tow.

With just three laps to go the leaders were once again in heavy traffic and Drown was locked in a great battle with Schlenk with Hornikel, Irey, Markham and Bores reeling in the top two. Drown would pick his way through the lapped cars and would drive to the win over Schlenk, Hornikel, Irey and Markham.

Kyle Cline and Steve Endicott brought the field to green for the 15 lap dirt truck feature but Brian Arnold would stop on the speedway to necessitate another start. When the green flew it was Cline with the advantage over Matt Foos, Endicott, Dana Fry, Roepke, Keith Sorg and Brandon Leighton.

Foos would challenge Cline for the lead on lap two with Roepke bolting into third. With just five laps scored it was a three truck battle for the lead between Cline, Foos and Roepke. Roepke would drive under and around Foos and Cline to take the lead on lap six.

As Roepke pulled away Foos and Cline battled for second with Fry, Endicott and Leighton staying close. Roepke would drive to the win over Foos, Fry, Endicott and Sorg.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, May 15th for the Eric Phillips 27th Anniversary Classic on American Powersports of Findlay and Sandusky Night. It is a Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title (FAST) Championship Series point race for the 410 sprints and a JLH General Contractor 305 Sprint FAST Championship Series point race. The late models will also be in action.
