By Brian Liskai: Sometimes a crash in racing can benefit a race team. Such is the case for Stuart Brubaker and the Burmeister Racing team.

Last week Brubaker was involved in a crash in his heat. And while the crew made repairs and he raced in the feature, the chassis was bent. The team put together an old car from last year that had been repaired and carried Brubaker to his first 410 sprint feature win of the year Friday at Attica Raceway Park. If it had been a family vehicle, its owners most likely would have sold it to the left hand drive car buyers here. But since it’s a racing car, probably it would have been easier and cheaper for them to get it repaired than to buy a brand new one. That said, the crew’s ability to make repairs is commendable. For his fifth career victory at Attica, Brubaker would take the lead for all 30 laps; it wasn’t without difficulty, as he had to endure a one-lap sprint to the finish line following a red on the final lap on Kistler Racing Products/Custom Chrome Plating Night.

“This is absolutely huge. We’ve been struggling the whole year. We would have some decent runs and this and that and fighting cars. I’ve been wanting this car back. I didn’t want to crash the other one to get it out. But I told Mikey (Sommers, crew chief) after we crashed the other one ‘if you don’t put this one together I’m not going to show up the next day.’ This car took care of us last year and we put it together and look where we are standing. I have to thank Tony Beaber for fixing it a couple of months ago. We parked it for Bryan (Clauson) tonight,” said Brubaker beside his Dave Story Equipment; Adkins Sanitation; Burmeister Plowing & Mowing; Burmeister’s Trophy; Advantage Ford Lincoln; Stephen P. Mapus Productive Tools & Equipment; Meggitt’s Sandblasting and Powder Coating backed #16.

Monclova, Byron Reed would finish second and wrapped up Attica’s 2016 championship, his second consecutive track title and his eighth overall at the track.

“It was a really good year. It’s definitely a fluke. I didn’t intend to do this…just kind of the way things worked out. Car was good all year and the crew did a great job all year. The crew did it tonight again. We had trouble early and they thrashed on it all night and it was really good,” said Reed.

Doug Drown is having another phenomenal year in a late model. The Wooster, driver drove from his eighth starting spot into the lead by lap three and drove away for his 7th win of the year at Attica in a non-stop 25 lap affair. It was his 20th career win at the track and moves him into second on the all-time win list only two behind Rusty Schlenk. Overall Drown has recorded 16 wins in 2016.

“I was anticipating about 10 laps to get to the front. I hit the top and I don’t know what everyone else was doing. It was like ‘here, have it.’ The car was phenomenal and the guys did a great job again. Congrats to Matt Irey on his championship. That team with the consistency they had this year…it’s great to have another Swartz Chassis in victory lane. This is my first championship night win in my 17 year career. Car’s working good and hopefully we can keep it going next week when the Lucas Oil series comes here. Last year I choked and over tightened my car for the feature and killed my right rear in like 10 laps. Hopefully we can just keep doing what we have been. We ran the same tires we did last week and still didn’t touch them,” Drown said beside his Halls Auto Sales; Malcuit Racing Engines; Nationwide Vehicle Protection; Wooster Glass; Kar Konnections backed #240.

Mansfield, Matt Irey would drive to a fourth place finish, good enough to claim the 2016 Attica late model championship. It is his first track title.

“I can’t complain about this year. It had its ups and downs but this definitely is an up for us. It was a sticky situation tonight. I didn’t want to take myself out of it. I knew I had to be there in the end. I knew if I got a top four I had it wrapped up,” said Irey.

Fremont, Jamie Miller would utilize the high line to take the lead on lap five of the 305 sprint feature and built up a nearly 8.5 second lead – more than half a track until a caution flew with seven laps to go. But, when the green flew so did Miller, pulling away for his third win of the year at Attica. It was the 15th of his career at the track and he ties DJ Foos for 7th on the track’s all-time win list for the division.

“I knew we were pretty good when I came up to lap Paul Weaver. Either we were pretty good or he was pretty bad. Car felt good. We’ve been running decent all year,” said Miller beside his Western Lake Erie Insulation Industry; Fostoria Mod Shop; Advanced Industrial; Crown Battery; Pioneer Quick Lube; Quarterback Transportation; Jamie Miller Trucking; Dick’s Auto Supply backed #66.

Paul Weaver of Fremont, had to come out of the B-main and then charged from 16th to an eighth place finish to wrap up the 305 sprint track championship. It is his second 305 track title at Attica.

“It was one of those nights you just have to finish. I knew when I drew the bad pill and didn’t make it through and had to run the B-main…biggest thing is don’t screw up. I had a 10th place car and I didn’t push it that hard and lose the championship,” said Weaver.

Fostoria, Shawn Valenti would dominate the dirt truck feature and took the victory for the second straight week. It is his 11th career truck win at the track and he ties Cory Ward for second on the all-time win list for the division, just two behind Art Ball.

“I got lucky pulling the number one starting spot and set sail. Give me a cushion to beat off of and we’re going to be hard to beat. I have to thank Craig Miller Trucking, KS Sales and Service, Gressman Powersports, JP Enterprise, Real Geese Decoys…without all these guys we couldn’t do this,” said Valenti.

In the O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 Sprint 30-lap feature, Brubaker and Tim Shaffer brought the field to green with Brubaker gaining the advantage over DJ Foos, Shaffer, Cole Duncan, Shawn Valenti, Jody Keegan, Travis Philo and Byron Reed. Brubaker quickly pulled away as Foos and Shaffer battled for second.

Brubaker caught the back of the field by lap seven as Foos, Shaffer, Duncan, Chris Andrews, Reed and Keegan gave chase. The caution would fly on lap 12 for a Tyler Gunn spin. On the ensuing restart Jody Keegan would tumble off turn one and while he was uninjured, his night was done. When the green flew Brubaker pulled away as Shaffer slid into second. Brubaker again caught the back of the pack on lap 19 but Shaffer couldn’t close as Foos battled Duncan for third while Reed and Andrews fought for fifth.

With seven laps to go Shaffer was eating away at Brubaker’s advantage ever so slightly with Foos, Reed, Duncan and Andrews in pursuit. After taking the white flag, Foos would tangle with Philo and Andrews while battling for third, sending Foos upside down on the front stretch and setting up a one lap shoot-out for the win. Brubaker got an excellent restart and pulled away for the victory as Reed got around Shaffer for second. Andrews came home fourth with Philo rounding out the top five.

In the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Model feature, Rick Bond and Cody Scott brought the field to green for the 25 lap affair. Bond took the lead over Larry Bellman, Scott, Irey, Rusty Schlenk and Ryan Markham. Drown drove from his eighth starting position to third by the second lap and into the lead on lap three.

Drown pulled away as Bellman and Bond battled for second with Schlenk, Scott, Markham and Irey waging a terrific race for fourth. Schlenk drove into second on lap seven but could not make up ground on Drown. Drown encountered lapped traffic y the 14th circuit with Schlenk and Markham now battling for second. Markham took the runner-up spot on lap 19 and slowly ate away at Drown’s lead.

Drown picked his way through traffic and drove to the win over Markham, Schlenk, Irey and Scott.

In the 25-lap Fremont Fence 305 Sprint feature, Tyler Street and Jordan Ryan brought the field to green with Street gaining the advantage over Ryan, Luke Griffith, Dan McCarron, Miller, Ricky Peterson, Steve Rando and Matt Foos. After a lap was complete Kelsey Ivy would tangle with an infield tractor tire, ending her night. When the green flew Street continued to lead Ryan as Miller blasted into third. Miller took second on lap four and drove around Street for the lead on lap five.

Miller rocketed away and encountered lapped traffic by lap nine as Street battled Ryan for second with Rando, Griffith and Peterson racing hard for fourth. Miller had a half track lead when the caution flew for Rando on lap 18. On the restart Miller would drive away from Ryan with Street, Foos and Peterson giving chase. Miller went unchallenged to the checkers with Ryan, Foos, Peterson and Street rounding out the top five. However, Foos failed to go to the scales after the feature and was credited with a last place finish.

A multi-truck pile-up marred the opening lap of the dirt truck feature. But, when the green flew so did Valenti. Valenti drove away the last 14 laps for the win with Cory McCaughey, Keith Sorg, Brian Sorg and Jeff Ward rounding out the top five.

Attica Raceway Park will wrap up the 2016 season with the Attica Ambush on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 2 and 3. On Friday the Lucas Oil Late Model Series will battle for $10,000 to win with the Kistler Racing Products FAST Championship Series presented by KS Sales and Service battling for $5,000 to win for the 410 sprints. On Saturday it’s the first ever Dirt Classic featuring the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions going for $10,000 to win. The late models and 305 sprints will also be in action Saturday.
