ATTICA, Ohio – Donny Schatz steadily worked his way through the pack from his 15th starting position at the 28th Annual Ohio Logistics Brad Doty Classic Presented by Racing Optics Tuesday at Attica Raceway Park. He used a restart with 12 laps to go to grab the lead and drove to his 14th World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series win of the year.
Schatz, from Fargo, ND., became the first drive to win three Brad Doty Classics, all coming in the last six years. It was his third career win at Attica Raceway Park.
The Brad Doty Classic returned to Attica – where it started in 1989 – after spending the last 10 years at Limaland Motorsports Park, and it played out before a standing room only crowd. The 53 drivers vying for the coveted Brad Doty Classic crown represented the biggest field of the year for the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series. The top three finishers in the 40-lap feature – Schatz, Dale Blaney and Daryn Pittman – came from 15th, 10th and 25th starting spots respectively. In fact, Pittman used a series’ provisional to start the feature – his first in the three years he’s been with Kasey Kahne Racing.
“I just had to be calm and cool the first part of that race. Those guys were going at it pretty hard and 40 laps you have to be really smart at the beginning. A lot of guys passed a lot of cars tonight. It was pretty cool to see the 49 (Brad Sweet) come from the C…so see those guys come all the way through…that’s pretty cool. I don’t know if I could do it. I’m just happy as hell…we won the Brad Doty Classic,” said Schatz beside his Bad Boy Off Road, Chevrolet Performance, J&J Auto Racing, Tony Stewart-Curb-Agajanian Racing machine.
“This whole Bad Boy Off Road, Chevrolet Performance team…we didn’t start the year the way we wanted. When people asked us what we thought of our season we kept saying average but when you look at what we did last year…man anything’s going to be average compared to that. These guys are digging…I’m digging…I’m doing everything I can. I hate running the cushion but I ran the cushion and that’s what you have to do to win races…be able to move around the race track. These guys are getting the job done and I’m just the lucky guy that gets to drive it,” Schatz added.
For Blaney, a Hartford, Ohio native, a second place run helped build some much needed confidence for his Go Muddy.com, Eyecon Trail Cameras, BadAzz Box Blinds, CH Motorsports team.
“Donny’s the best for a reason. He came from deep in the pack. The track dictated that you could come from a ways back. There was a thin lane up on top and you could run middle and bottom a little bit. We needed this. We really haven’t been struggling…we’ve been running decent but we haven’t got the finishes we deserve. Great night for all of us…Muddy and Big Game and CH Motorsports and everyone who’s involved with this team. George (Fisher, chief mechanic) and I have been pulling our hair out a little bit. He’s trying to figure out what we need for some balance…he and Donny and Skippy are doing a good job. I’m proud to run second at this race. We’ve won the World of Outlaw race here the past two years…I think the last five or six years it’s either been Schatz or myself so we kept it in the family I guess,” Blaney said.
While he was disappointed he had to take a provisional to make the A-main, Owasso, Oklahoma’s Pittman was excited about how well his car reacted.
“It shows the attitude of this Great Clips team. They didn’t quit. It’s easy to quit when things go bad for you. It was a perfect storm to have a disastrous night. We blew and engine before we even got to the green qualifying so we had to take no time. My car felt really good in our heat race to be honest with you. I was actually kind of excited…I ran fifth in the D-main and I came in and they were like ‘what’s going on’ and I said my car’s really good but I just ran fifth in the D. It’s hard to explain that to your crew chief. We pretty much left it alone and I was confident if the track did what Attica always does we could scoot through the middle. We just had a great car the last couple of weeks, especially the last 10 laps of the race. It was a lot of fun and we passed a lot of really good cars,” Pittman said of his Great Clips, Sage Fruit, Team ASE, Curb Records, Factory Kahne backed machine.
“I’ve never missed a race since I’ve been in this nine car. So that’s three and half years. I’m pretty sad of losing that streak. Hopefully we can start another one tomorrow. It shows how good this team is and how hard they work. For us to go that long and never miss a race is a tribute to how great this Great Clips team is and I’m proud to drive it,” added Pittman.
James McFadden and Danny Holtgraver brought the field to green for the 40-lap feature with McFadden gaining the upper hand. Holtgraver would battle with Jacob Allen and Caleb Griffith for second. Holtgraver and Allen would make contact, sending Allen spinning after three laps were scored. The car on the move was Sheldon Haudenschild who stormed from sixth to second by lap four, bringing Griffith to third.
Following a Shawn Dancer spin on lap six, McFadden would get a tremendous restart over Haudenschild, Griffith, Holtgraver and Joey Saldana. As McFadden and Haudenschild pulled away a tremendous battle ensued for third involving Griffith, Holtgraver, Blaney, Saldana and Schatz. Haudenschild quickly ate away at McFadden’s lead and the pair raced side by side to the start finish line on lap 11 with McFadden holding only a .02 second advantage. The pair began trading sliders at each turn over the next three laps as they prepared to race into heavy lapped traffic.
Meanwhile Blaney had established himself in third with Griffith, Schatz, Saldana, Holtgraver and Parker Price Miller in tow. Haudenschild eventually took the lead on lap 13. At the halfway point as the leaders sliced through lapped traffic, Haudenschild held a comfortable advantage over McFadden with Blaney closing the gap while Schatz moved into fourth. Schatz would drive under Blaney for third on lap 26, right before McFadden would spin.
When the green returned for the double file restart both Schatz and Blaney drove around Haudenschild with Holtgraver moving into fourth. Meanwhile, Pittman had worked his way into the top five. Schatz would begin to pull away from Blaney as Haudenschild, Holtgraver, Pittman, Saldana and Griffith gave chase. Pittman drove into fourth on lap 33. Schatz continued to build on his lead while Blaney ran unchallenged for second. Meanwhile Haudenschild and Pittman put on quite the show in their battle for third. Pittman eventually took the spot on lap 36 but ran out of time to catch Schatz and Blaney.
Schatz would easily drive to the win over Blaney, Pittman, Haudenschild and Holtgraver.
Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, July 22 on Smith Family Foods, Comfort Keepers Night. It will be a Kistler Racing Products FAST Championship Series Presented by KS Sales and Service point night for the 410 sprints with the UMP late models also in action. The 305 sprints will be vying for $1,000 to win thanks to Griff’s Engines. Fans are encouraged to bring canned foods to the track to help feed area senior citizens.

Hall storms to BOSS win at Attica
By Brian Liskai ATTICA, Ohio – Luke Hall survived several late race restarts to claim the Rick’s Truck and Equipment Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series (BOSS) win at Attica Raceway Park Friday. Hall, who owns two 360 sprint wins at Attica Raceway Park, can now boast a non-wing victory.
It has been 13 years since non-wing sprints have competed at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” speedplant and 42 BOSS sprinters signed in to compete on Central Ohio Farmers/Sutton Bank Night.
Hall, of Ludlow Falls, Ohio, used the high line to take the lead on lap six and then survived two cautions in the last six laps to hold off Little 500 winner Kody Swanson for his first Attica non-wing victory.
“This is awesome. This BOSS series is tough with Swanson, Westfall…the list goes on and on. To get one up here for the Nelsons is great. Ron and Jon Nelson, Gary, Ronnie…everyone that helps. It’s been a long road. Those yellows…I thought it was going to kill me,” said Hall beside his Lightening Electric backed machine.
Ashland, Ohio’s Ryan Markham put a new Swartz Race Car together this past week and it paid huge dividends. Markham led all 25 laps of the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Model feature to score his first win of the season at Attica. It is his eighth career win at the track and gives him valuable points in the chase for the Attica/Wayne County Speedway Late Model Series Challenge title.
“To roll out a brand new race car and have things go our way tonight…we started up front. Sometimes you just need a little bit of luck on your side and not wear your stuff out trying to get to the front. This one I was a little bit nervous with a brand new race car. It was a storybook ending,” said Markham beside his H&T Demolition; Harriger Towing; Accu-Force; Innovative Graphics; Cool-It Thermo Tech backed #5m.
“My neighbors came tonight. It’s the first time they’ve ever been to the race track and Jim and Julie are all excited,” added Markham.
Fremont, Ohio’s Jamie Miller would rim-ride into the lead of the Fremont Fence 305 Sprint feature on lap five and never looked back, dominating for his first win of the season. It is his 13th career win at Attica.
“I was kind of up there wasn’t I…I hung the right rear over the ledge a couple of times. The track was perfect for me tonight. Everybody was trying to run the bottom and they left the top side wide open for me. You have to take advantage of that when there’s a nice cushion on one end and the other end wasn’t bad either,” Miller said beside his Western Lake Erie Insulation Industry, Fostoria Mod Shop, Advanced Industrial Services, Crown Battery, Pioneer Quick Lube, Quarterback Transportation, Jamie Miller Trucking, Dick’s Auto Supply backed #66.
Chad Wilson and Stuart Brubaker would lead the field to green for the 25 lap BOSS feature with Wilson gaining the advantage over Brandon Spithaler, Hall, Brubaker, Andy Feil and Swanson. Hall would power into second on the second circuit as Wilson continued to lead. Spithaler, Brubaker, Swanton and Matt Westfall waged a terrific battle for third.
Hall would shoot around the high side to take the lead on lap six with Wilson, Swanton and Shawn Westerfeld giving chase. The caution would fly with nine laps in for Todd Keen who stopped in turn three. Hall would pull away on the restart while Wilson had to deal with Swanson. Swanton took second on lap 11, bringing Westerfeld into third.
A multi-car incident in turn one on lap 13 would result in Dustin Ingle taking a nasty flip. He was uninjured but done for the night. When the green returned Wilson would blast from fourth to second with Swanson, Westerfeld, Brubaker and Dustin Stroup in tow.
With 10 laps to go Hall had pulled away while Wilson, Swanson and Westerfeld put on a fantastic battle. Swanson would regain second on lap 17 with Westerfeld moving into third a lap later just as the caution flew for a Mike Burkin spin. Hall would get a great restart but it was all for naught as a lap later Cooper Clouse would bring out another caution.
When the green flew for the five lap battle to the checkers, Hall pulled away again from Swanson, Westerfeld, Wilson, Matt Westfall and Brubaker. Hall hit his marks perfectly the final five circuits for the win over Swanson, Westerfeld, Westfall and Stroup.
In the 25 lap late model feature Brad Malcuit and Larry Bellman brought the field to green but it was fourth starter Markham who drove into the lead. Markham couldn’t shake Malcuit with Irey taking third. A yellow for debris on lap three saw the restart order of Markham, Malcuit, Irey, Dave Hornikel, Devin Shiels and Doug Drown.
Markham began to pull away as Irey, Malcuit and Drown battled for second. Markham raced into lapped traffic by the 10th circuit and held a comfortable lead over Irey, Drown, Malcuit, Hornikel and Shiels. Another caution would bunch up the field with 14 laps in.
When the green flew so did Markham, once again stretching out his lead. But, a caution with 17 laps in wiped out his lead. Just like the previous restarts Markham would pull away when the green flew over Irey, Drown, Shiels, Cody Scott, Mike Bores and Malcuit.
A final caution with five laps remaining would give the field another shot at Markham. But, “Flyin’ Ryan” would hit his marks perfectly and pulled away for the victory. Irey and Drown waged a terrific battle during the closing laps for second with Irey taking the spot. Drown, Shiels and Scott rounded out the top five.
Ricky Peterson and John Ivy brought the field to green for the 25 lap 305 sprint feature with Peterson gaining the advantage over Ivy, Dustin Dinan, Kyle Capodice, Miller, Paul Weaver and Tyler Street. Miller utilized the extreme high line to drive into third by the third lap and into second a circuit later. Miller drove around Peterson into the lead on lap five and began to pull away but a caution for Kyle Peters and Scott Riley tangle bunched the field back up.
Miller pulled away when the green flew as Peterson battled with Dinan for second while Ivy, Weaver and Dustin Stroup stayed close. Only a caution with nine laps scored for a stalled Landon LaLonde would prevent Miller from powering away from the field.
When the green flew Miller drove away again with Peterson and Dinan continuing their battle for second. Miller drove into lapped traffic by the 16th lap and had a couple of close calls. Peterson now had to contend with Ivy for second.
With five laps to go Miller held nearly a half track lead over Peterson, Ivy, Weaver, Dinan and Stroup. Weaver would come on strong and took third on lap 22. Miller drove to the checkers over Weaver who nipped Peterson at the line with Ivy and Dinan rounding out the top five.

ATTICA, Ohio – Leveling up. It’s the exact concept that the Dirt Classic is based around.
Taking things to the next level isn’t always easy, but it’s exactly what the Dirt Classic Ohio promoters have in mind with the announcement the race at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio, will be changing dates from Wednesday, August 3 to Saturday, September 3.
The unique, high-competition event, held for the first time at Attica Raceway Park, will now be run under the Arctic Cat All Star Sprint Circuit of Champions sanctioning.
“When we looked at the feedback from the industry and had the opportunity to clinch the Saturday of Labor Day weekend with the All Stars, John Bores, Rex LeJeune and I felt we couldn’t pass that up for the fans and for the racers,” Dirt Classic Promoter Jarrod Adams said.
The event offers a Golden Ticket guaranteed starting spot to the marquee $20,000-to-win Dirt Classic at Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, PA later in the month. Fans should expect to see the top talent from the All Stars including Dale Blaney, Chad Kemenah, Sheldon Haudenschild and more, in addition to the always-competitive local talent and travelers.
“We feel the date change allows us to take the event to the next level for racers and fans,” Adams said. “That’s important to all of us as a brand, especially for our first foray into the highly competitive Ohio market.”
The addition of the Dirt Classic to the Sept. 3 event at Attica makes it a truly marquee weekend at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” venue to wrap up the track’s 2016 season. On Morgan Stanley Night, Friday, Sept. 2, the Lucas Oil Late Model Series will battle for $10,000 to win with the Kistler Racing Products FAST Championship Series Presented by KS Sales and Service 410 sprints racing for $5,000 to win for the 410 sprints
Besides the Dirt Classic on All Pro Aluminum Heads Night, Saturday, Sept. 3, the UMP late models will be in action and it is part of the Attica Raceway Park/Wayne County Speedway Late Model Challenge Series. The 305 sprints will also be in action. Unfortunately, the dirt trucks have been dropped from the racing card.
Also, the Attica Fair Board 50/50 drawing on Saturday will benefit the Kasey Kahne Foundation.

The Dirt Classic brand added Ohio to the list of new states to visit in 2016, in addition to Nebraska at I-80 Speedway in May, and Indiana at Kokomo Speedway with the All Star Sprint Circuit of Champions on July 22nd and 23rd.
Iowa’s Terry McCarl and Pennsylvania’s Greg Hodnett have already clinched Golden Tickets and guaranteed $1,000 starting monies for the Dirt Classic on Saturday, September 24 by winning Dirt Classic I-80 and the Dirt Classic Showcase Race, respectively.
Originally presented by sprint car advocate Kasey Kahne, the Dirt Classic began as a single-race event in 2014 at Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, PA. Boasting the largest winner’s payout in the track’s storied history, the race attracted more than 50 teams. Stevie Smith won the inaugural race to pick up a cool $20,000, while Brian Montieth was able to best Smith in a lap-for-lap battle in 2015 to collect the winning check and custom trophy.
Fans and teams should expect additional announcements on format, payouts, social media promotions and more for the Dirt Classic Ohio.
