ATTICA, Ohio – Sheldon Haudenschild overcame an early race incident and passed Byron Reed on lap 20 and survived late race cautions to claim the biggest win of his young sprint car career. The Wooster, Ohio native scored his 7th Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions win of 2016 at Attica Raceway Park Saturday and earned a $10,000 payday for the first Dirt Classic Ohio.

For Haudenschild, who is third in the All Star point standings, it was the 13th career series win, two of which have come at Attica. He gave the huge crowd a thrilling “spin to win” victory on All Pro Cylinder Heads Night, the third of his career at the track, to close Attica’s 2016 season.

Haudenschild lead the first eight laps and upon entering heavy lapped traffic and battling Dale Blaney and Byron Reed, he spun in turn four but was able to keep going and dropped to third. He would quickly rebound and took second on lap 15 and drove around Reed for the lead for good on lap 20.

“I just pinned it and kept it running. I knew on this track if I could just keep it going I’d get a top five. The track was awesome…hats off to those guys. I spun out there and I kind of had to regroup and make sure I wasn’t spinning my tires and get through the first half and be there at the end. Dale (Blaney) actually made a mistake in turn four and about jumped the top which was definitely easy to do. I saw Dale entering a little lower in turn one and I tried to do that a couple of times once I got to second and I figured I’d just rail it and see what I could do. I ended up getting a good run on Byron (Reed) into three and had a pretty good slide job and tried to hit my marks from there. I still made a couple of mistakes…I got to the lappers and I thought Byron would be there. I just kept ripping it,” said Haudenschild beside his Southern Pacific Farms, Finzer Farms, Callies Performance Products, Finish Line Auto Body, Willwood, Smith Titanium, Walker Filtration, GME, BMRS backed machine.

As for the $10,000 payday? Haudenschild says it all goes back into the team. “All our money goes back to our crew and this race car. That’s the only way we stay out here and keep racing. We have to win and make a little bit of money to keep going,” he added.

For Reed, who won his eighth Attica track championship this season and picked up the victory Friday night, a second place run continued his strong run in 2016.

“I’m really happy. I think I’ve finished second at every All Star race here this year. When I saw the top was so good I knew we were in trouble with Sheldon. He’s so good on the top. Would have liked to have seen a little traffic. I think I might have made it interesting. I think I was maybe a little more maneuverable than he was but he was killing us on the top. But overall I’m pretty happy. It’s been a great year. The most win’s I’ve ever had in a season and hopefully it’s not over yet,” said Reed beside his Crown Battery, Ken Gill Construction backed #5.

Blaney’s third place run vaulted him into the All Star point lead though it is slim over Chad Kemenah. Kemenah came back from an early flat tire and drove to a 10th place finish to stay within six points of Blaney.

“The track had a few ripples in it getting into both corners and getting into three I couldn’t get to where I wanted to. I was just kind of holding on and the middle went away getting into one. We were fair…pretty good all night long really. If we can finish on the podium for the rest of the year we’ll be there at the end of this thing. It’s a good night overall for us and Janet and CH Motorsports and Muddy and Big Game and Penske Shocks, Gf1, Fisher Racing Engines…everyone does a great job with our team,” said Blaney.

Ashland, Ohio’s Ryan Markham used lapped traffic to take the lead from JR Gentry on lap eight of the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Model feature and then held off challenges from Doug Drown and Mike Bores as he drove to his third win of the season at Attica. It was his 10th career win at the track and kept him atop the Attica Raceway Park-Wayne County Speedway Late Model Series Challenge point lead. Markham has won three of the five point races in 2016.

“I just had to get up on the wheel. It’s a little treacherous up there…I kept getting tight down here (turns one and two) and got a little push. But, if you slow down it’s harder to drive so better to go a little faster. Since we put this Swartz Chassis together we have three wins here and three second places with it. We had a good run here last night until we had a tire go down,” said Markham beside his H&T Demolition; Harriger Towing; Accu-Force; Innovative Graphics; Cool-It Thermo Tec. Backed #5M.

“I want to thank Paul Harriger. I think he got a speeding ticket on his way up here to help me tonight. It’s a good thing he got here because we got the nose boogered up. I have to give a big shout out to Bret Chance. He did a little shock stuff for me last night and we put it on today and it was pretty good. I want to thank Accu-Force for all the work they do for me and Malcuit Engines,” added Markham.

Fremont, Ohio’s Matt Foos, a former Attica dirt truck champion, continued his fantastic rookie year in the Fremont Fence 305 Sprints. Foos would take the lead on lap 10 after fellow rookie Trevor Baker spun but kept going. Foos picked his way through traffic like a seasoned veteran the last five laps to score his second win of the year.

“This is unbelievable. This is my dad’s (Dave, crew chief) 50th win with all the guys he’s had working together. It’s so awesome. My dad’s been on me pretty hard bout being easy on the right foot,” said Foos beside his Rich and Shelly Farmer owned machine with sponsorship help from Level Performance, Fremont Auto Parts, Automatic Fire Protection, Big D’s Pizza.

When asked what the biggest thing he has learned in his rookie sprint car season, Foos replied, “It’s not about even driving. It’s about becoming a better person. Settling yourself down and having composure. Not letting anything bother you. You are here to do a job.”

The 40-lap All Star feature got off to a rocky start. First Reed would be penalized a row for jumping the initial start. On the second attempt Stuart Brubaker and Duane Zablocki got together after a lap was completed. On the ensuing restart D.J. Foos would stop on the track and Cole Duncan would spin. After three laps were scored eighth running Chris Andrews coast to a stop. On the restart Haudenschild would rocket away with Blaney and Reed battling for second while Craig Mintz, Tim Shaffer, Chad Kemenah and Brent Marks gave chase.

Haudenschild encountered extremely heavy lapped traffic by the ninth circuit and he would spin in turn four but kept his car under power and fell back to third with Blaney taking over the point. Reed would drive under Blaney for the top spot on lap 13 with Blaney and Haudenschild staying within striking distance. Broc Martin brought out the caution on lap 16 with Reed maintaining the lead over Haudenschild, Blaney, Mintz, Shaffer, Marks and Kemenah.

When the green reappeared Reed drove to the bottom while Haudenschild blasted away around the top. Haudenschild rim-rode into the lead on lap 20 with Reed, Blaney, Mintz and 14th place starter Travis Philo in tow. Andrews would bring out the caution again on lap 22. On the ensuing restart Cap Henry and Shaffer would tangle with Henry ending up on his side. When the green came back out Haudenschild rocketed away, building up a lead over Reed, Blaney, Mintz, Marks, Philo and Danny Holtgraver who started 20th.

Haudenschild narrowly avoided disaster on lap 31 when he made hard contact while trying to lap Broc Martin, sending Martin crashing into the fourth turn fence. Once again with a clear track, Haudenschild pulled away on the restart with Reed, Blaney, Marks, Mintz, Philo, Lee Jacobs (up from 26th) and Holtgraver giving chase.

Haudenschild built a 2.5 second lead and cruised to the win over Reed, Blaney, Marks, Mintz and Philo.

Markham and Gentry brought the field to green for the 25 lap late model feature and the pair battled hard for the lead with Rick Bond and Mike Bores side by side right behind. Gentry got the slight advantage over Markham with Bores and Bond trading the third spot over the first six laps. Markham drove into the lead on lap eight but Gentry, Bores and now Doug Drown were within half a car length. Markham utilized the high line to begin to pull away slightly as Bores and Drown raced side by side over the next four laps for second.

Drown began eating away at Markham’s lead but a bobble on the cushion in turn three cost him valuable real estate. The first caution flew on lap 14 for Nick Cox. On the restart Markham was able to pull away from Drown with Bores, Matt Irey and Brad Malcuit in pursuit. Bores drove under Drown for second on lap 18 just before the caution flew for a Malcuit spin. On the ensuing restart Bores ducked under Markham but couldn’t get by with Drown racing right off their rear bumpers.

With two laps to go Drown was within half a car length of Markham. But, Markham would hit his marks perfectly and drove to the win over Drown, Bores, Irey and 15th place starter Dave Hornikel.

Rookie Trevor Baker jumped into the lead of the 305 sprint feature and built a sizeable lead as Ricky Peterson, Foos, Jamie Miller, Dan Hennig and Steve Rando gave chase. Foos took the second position on lap three just prior to the caution for Kyle Capodice who slowed to a stop. Baker got a great restart and pulled away from Foos, Peterson, Miller, Rando, Jordan Ryan, Hennig and Dustin Dinan.

Disaster struck for Baker on lap nine as he spun in turn two but kept going, falling back to fifth. Now in the lead, Foos used the middle line to build a bit of a lead over Peterson, Miller and Rando. Dinan would coast to a stop on lap 12. Foos again got a great restart and pulled away from Peterson while Miller and Rando battled for third with Ryan, Baker, Brandon Moore, Luke Griffith and Josh Harrison in tow. With 10 laps to go Rando would take third while Peterson began to inch closer to Foos.

Foos encountered lapped traffic with five laps to go but picked his way through and drove to the win over Peterson, Rando, Miller and Ryan.

The first Dirt Classic Ohio was deemed a huge success. Since 2014, the event, which began at Lincoln Speedway in Pennsylvania as a way to get more money into the hands of race teams, has paid out nearly a half million dollars, nearly $200,000 this year alone. And, through the Kasey Kahne Foundation, which was created by the NASCAR star to help charities supporting chronically ill children and their families, over $60,000 has been raised through the Dirt Classic. The Attica Fair Association sold 50/50 raffle tickets to benefit the Kasey Kahne Foundation, raising over $1,600 Saturday. The 50/50 winner then donated $1,000 of his winnings to former 305 sprint driver Junior Felver and his wife Sara and their four-year-old daughter Peyton who is fighting a rare form of cancer.

Attica Raceway Park Promoter John Bores and his staff would like to thank all the race teams, fans, marketing partners, push truck and wrecker operators and safety personnel for their support in 2016 and look forward to more excitement in 2017.

ATTICA, Ohio – Blairsville, Georgia’s Jonathan Davenport put recent misfortunes aside and drove to his ninth Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win Friday at Attica Raceway Park.Davenport, the defending Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series National Champion, used lapped traffic to wrestle the lead away from defending Attica track champion Doug Drown on lap 14 and scored the $10,000 win on Morgan Stanley Night to open the Attica Ambush weekend.

It was the first ever win at Attica for the driver known as “Superman.”

Dennis Erb Jr. charged from his 12 starting spot to finish second, Drown, who has seven wins on the year at Attica, had the huge crowd on its feet, storming into the lead at the drop of the green from his fourth starting spot. He led the first 13 circuits and finished third. New track record holder Darrell Lanigan was fourth and Jimmy Owens, who won the first time the series raced at Attica three years ago, finished fifth.

Davenport, who is currently second in the series’ point standings and had not finished the last three Lucas Oil events, was relieved to be back in victory lane.

“I about forgot what this feels like. This is awesome. This win goes to Kevin (Rumley) and my guys, Jerome and Heath…they have worked their tails off the last two weeks. Everybody knows we haven’t been running good. We ain’t dead and we are not done yet.  We are just going to keep on working and trying to find stuff to get that little bit of an edge,” said Davenport, thanking his sponsors, Troy Baird of Baird Transport, Elite Concrete, Mega Plumbing of the Carolinas, the Labontes, who were back at the shop building a new car for the World 100, and Lee Roy Rumley who is at the shop building a new engine.

Davenport praised third place finisher and early leader Drown for his run.

“I don’t know if I could have ever gotten by him without that lapped traffic. He went a little softer (tire) than I did. Me and him are good buddies and we talked before the race about tires and what we were going to do. He pulled a fast one on me. He told me he was going to go with one thing and he went with something else. That’s what you have to do,” jokedDavenport. “He was actually telling me about a line he runs here sometimes and I seen him do it a couple of times when I was behind him and I couldn’t get around the top so good. So once he got behind me I knew where he was going to be so I tried to do the same thing to him and it worked out for us.”

Erb in the Vomac Truck Sales/J.R. McBride Leasing/Black Diamond Chassis was happy with his performance with his second place run.

“It was a good run. We started pretty far back and the race track came to me. We kept plugging away and ended up second. The car was working very well on the bottom,” Erb said.

Drown had the car that nearly pulled off the upset.

“I felt like if I was going to keep up with these guys I better go softer on the tires. The way the moisture was coming back through the track…I thought I would be a little bit smarter than those guys….I wasn’t It was cool as hell to get the lead like we did. I’m very happy. We wanted a top five tonight and we accomplished that. To race with these guys…you have a World 100 winner and a Dream winner sitting up here. To be in that mix…I’m very happy,” said the driver of the Halls Auto Sales; Malcuit Racing Engines; Nationwide Vehicle Protection; Wooster Glass; Kar Konnections machine

In the O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 sprints, recently crowned track champion Byron Reed would grab the lead at the white flag just before a red flag, and held on the final one lap shoot out to score his fourth win of the year at Attica. It was the 35th career win at the track for the eight time champion. And, it pads his point lead in the $10,000-to-win Kistler Racing Products FAST Championship Series presented by KS Sales and Service with just one point night left, that at Fremont Speedway in a couple of weeks.

“The slower you enter on the bottom, the better you come off. It was good racing…good guys to race with. It’s tough to be the leader in lapped traffic (Craig Mintz) and I was able to go where they weren’t,” said Reed beside his Crown Battery, Ken Gill Construction backed machine.

In the 50 lap late model feature, Drown bolted from his fourth starting spot to take the lead on the very first lap much to the approval of the large crowd on hand for the event. The first few laps of the feature were married with cautions and even a red. After a red for a Timothy Culp flip on the third lap, the race laps would begin to tick away with Drown blasting away on the cushion to pull away.

Drown raced into heavy lapped traffic by the 10th circuit and that allowed Davenport and Darrell Lanigan to close. Davenport would use the lapped cars to drive under Drown into the lead on lap 14. Drown would stay close for a while and even had a shot at Davenport when the caution flew on lap 20. But, when the green flew again so did Davenport as he began pulling away. With 15 laps to go Davenport held a commanding lead over Drown, Lanigan, Jimmy Owens, Don O’Neal, and Erb. With 10 laps to go all eyes were on Erb who had charged into third. Drown and Erb waged a terrific battle over the next five laps before Erb took the runner-up position with five to go.

Davenport drove to the win over Erb, Drown, Lannigan, Owens, O’Neal, 23rd starting Brandon Sheppard, Earl Pearson Jr., Attica track champion, Matt Irey and Devin Moran.

The sprint feature got off to a rough start with a multi-car crash involving Shawn Valenti, Duane Zablocki, Brandon Spithaler, Dan McCarron and Stuart Brubaker on the opening lap. Former Attica track champion Dean Jacobs would lead the first six laps though Broc Martin challenged continuously. Martin would take the lead when Jacobs bobbled on the cushion in turn two on lap seven. That also allowed Parker Price-Miller to race into second.

With 12 laps scored it was a tremendous three car battle for the lead with Martin, Price-Miller and Craig Mintz. Reed would join the fracas by lap 15. Mintz drove into the lead on lap 16 with Martin and Reed challenging. The four car battle up front got very interesting as they raced into heavy lapped traffic by lap 17. That allowed Travis Philo to close. A caution would halt the tremendous action on lap 20 with Mintz leading Reed, Price-Miller, Philo and Tim Shaffer.

Back to green and Mintz was holding off Reed with Philo blasting into third, bringing Shaffer to fourth. Following a caution on lap 23, Mintz would find his groove and pulled away slightly as Reed was left to try and fend off Philo with Shaffer, Price-Miller and D.J. Foos giving chase.

With four laps to go, Mintz was racing through lapped traffic, making a fantastic move to split two in the middle of turns three and four. That allowed Reed, who found the extreme bottom groove to his liking, to close quickly. Coming to the white flag Reed rocketed off the bottom to take the lead over Mintz and Philo just as the red flew for a small engine fire on Spithaler’s machine. For the one-lap sprint to the checkers the running order was Reed, Mintz, Philo, Shaffer, Price-Miller, Foos, Randy Hanagan and Jacobs.

Reed got an excellent restart and drove to the win over Mintz, Philo, Shaffer and Price-Miller.

By Brian Liskai: Sometimes a crash in racing can benefit a race team. Such is the case for Stuart Brubaker and the Burmeister Racing team.

Last week Brubaker was involved in a crash in his heat. And while the crew made repairs and he raced in the feature, the chassis was bent. The team put together an old car from last year that had been repaired and carried Brubaker to his first 410 sprint feature win of the year Friday at Attica Raceway Park. If it had been a family vehicle, its owners most likely would have sold it to the left hand drive car buyers here. But since it’s a racing car, probably it would have been easier and cheaper for them to get it repaired than to buy a brand new one. That said, the crew’s ability to make repairs is commendable. For his fifth career victory at Attica, Brubaker would take the lead for all 30 laps; it wasn’t without difficulty, as he had to endure a one-lap sprint to the finish line following a red on the final lap on Kistler Racing Products/Custom Chrome Plating Night.

“This is absolutely huge. We’ve been struggling the whole year. We would have some decent runs and this and that and fighting cars. I’ve been wanting this car back. I didn’t want to crash the other one to get it out. But I told Mikey (Sommers, crew chief) after we crashed the other one ‘if you don’t put this one together I’m not going to show up the next day.’ This car took care of us last year and we put it together and look where we are standing. I have to thank Tony Beaber for fixing it a couple of months ago. We parked it for Bryan (Clauson) tonight,” said Brubaker beside his Dave Story Equipment; Adkins Sanitation; Burmeister Plowing & Mowing; Burmeister’s Trophy; Advantage Ford Lincoln; Stephen P. Mapus Productive Tools & Equipment; Meggitt’s Sandblasting and Powder Coating backed #16.

Monclova, Byron Reed would finish second and wrapped up Attica’s 2016 championship, his second consecutive track title and his eighth overall at the track.

“It was a really good year. It’s definitely a fluke. I didn’t intend to do this…just kind of the way things worked out. Car was good all year and the crew did a great job all year. The crew did it tonight again. We had trouble early and they thrashed on it all night and it was really good,” said Reed.

Doug Drown is having another phenomenal year in a late model. The Wooster, driver drove from his eighth starting spot into the lead by lap three and drove away for his 7th win of the year at Attica in a non-stop 25 lap affair. It was his 20th career win at the track and moves him into second on the all-time win list only two behind Rusty Schlenk. Overall Drown has recorded 16 wins in 2016.

“I was anticipating about 10 laps to get to the front. I hit the top and I don’t know what everyone else was doing. It was like ‘here, have it.’ The car was phenomenal and the guys did a great job again. Congrats to Matt Irey on his championship. That team with the consistency they had this year…it’s great to have another Swartz Chassis in victory lane. This is my first championship night win in my 17 year career. Car’s working good and hopefully we can keep it going next week when the Lucas Oil series comes here. Last year I choked and over tightened my car for the feature and killed my right rear in like 10 laps. Hopefully we can just keep doing what we have been. We ran the same tires we did last week and still didn’t touch them,” Drown said beside his Halls Auto Sales; Malcuit Racing Engines; Nationwide Vehicle Protection; Wooster Glass; Kar Konnections backed #240.

Mansfield, Matt Irey would drive to a fourth place finish, good enough to claim the 2016 Attica late model championship. It is his first track title.

“I can’t complain about this year. It had its ups and downs but this definitely is an up for us. It was a sticky situation tonight. I didn’t want to take myself out of it. I knew I had to be there in the end. I knew if I got a top four I had it wrapped up,” said Irey.

Fremont, Jamie Miller would utilize the high line to take the lead on lap five of the 305 sprint feature and built up a nearly 8.5 second lead – more than half a track until a caution flew with seven laps to go. But, when the green flew so did Miller, pulling away for his third win of the year at Attica. It was the 15th of his career at the track and he ties DJ Foos for 7th on the track’s all-time win list for the division.

“I knew we were pretty good when I came up to lap Paul Weaver. Either we were pretty good or he was pretty bad. Car felt good. We’ve been running decent all year,” said Miller beside his Western Lake Erie Insulation Industry; Fostoria Mod Shop; Advanced Industrial; Crown Battery; Pioneer Quick Lube; Quarterback Transportation; Jamie Miller Trucking; Dick’s Auto Supply backed #66.

Paul Weaver of Fremont, had to come out of the B-main and then charged from 16th to an eighth place finish to wrap up the 305 sprint track championship. It is his second 305 track title at Attica.

“It was one of those nights you just have to finish. I knew when I drew the bad pill and didn’t make it through and had to run the B-main…biggest thing is don’t screw up. I had a 10th place car and I didn’t push it that hard and lose the championship,” said Weaver.

Fostoria, Shawn Valenti would dominate the dirt truck feature and took the victory for the second straight week. It is his 11th career truck win at the track and he ties Cory Ward for second on the all-time win list for the division, just two behind Art Ball.

“I got lucky pulling the number one starting spot and set sail. Give me a cushion to beat off of and we’re going to be hard to beat. I have to thank Craig Miller Trucking, KS Sales and Service, Gressman Powersports, JP Enterprise, Real Geese Decoys…without all these guys we couldn’t do this,” said Valenti.

In the O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 Sprint 30-lap feature, Brubaker and Tim Shaffer brought the field to green with Brubaker gaining the advantage over DJ Foos, Shaffer, Cole Duncan, Shawn Valenti, Jody Keegan, Travis Philo and Byron Reed. Brubaker quickly pulled away as Foos and Shaffer battled for second.

Brubaker caught the back of the field by lap seven as Foos, Shaffer, Duncan, Chris Andrews, Reed and Keegan gave chase. The caution would fly on lap 12 for a Tyler Gunn spin. On the ensuing restart Jody Keegan would tumble off turn one and while he was uninjured, his night was done. When the green flew Brubaker pulled away as Shaffer slid into second. Brubaker again caught the back of the pack on lap 19 but Shaffer couldn’t close as Foos battled Duncan for third while Reed and Andrews fought for fifth.

With seven laps to go Shaffer was eating away at Brubaker’s advantage ever so slightly with Foos, Reed, Duncan and Andrews in pursuit. After taking the white flag, Foos would tangle with Philo and Andrews while battling for third, sending Foos upside down on the front stretch and setting up a one lap shoot-out for the win. Brubaker got an excellent restart and pulled away for the victory as Reed got around Shaffer for second. Andrews came home fourth with Philo rounding out the top five.

In the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Model feature, Rick Bond and Cody Scott brought the field to green for the 25 lap affair. Bond took the lead over Larry Bellman, Scott, Irey, Rusty Schlenk and Ryan Markham. Drown drove from his eighth starting position to third by the second lap and into the lead on lap three.

Drown pulled away as Bellman and Bond battled for second with Schlenk, Scott, Markham and Irey waging a terrific race for fourth. Schlenk drove into second on lap seven but could not make up ground on Drown. Drown encountered lapped traffic y the 14th circuit with Schlenk and Markham now battling for second. Markham took the runner-up spot on lap 19 and slowly ate away at Drown’s lead.

Drown picked his way through traffic and drove to the win over Markham, Schlenk, Irey and Scott.

In the 25-lap Fremont Fence 305 Sprint feature, Tyler Street and Jordan Ryan brought the field to green with Street gaining the advantage over Ryan, Luke Griffith, Dan McCarron, Miller, Ricky Peterson, Steve Rando and Matt Foos. After a lap was complete Kelsey Ivy would tangle with an infield tractor tire, ending her night. When the green flew Street continued to lead Ryan as Miller blasted into third. Miller took second on lap four and drove around Street for the lead on lap five.

Miller rocketed away and encountered lapped traffic by lap nine as Street battled Ryan for second with Rando, Griffith and Peterson racing hard for fourth. Miller had a half track lead when the caution flew for Rando on lap 18. On the restart Miller would drive away from Ryan with Street, Foos and Peterson giving chase. Miller went unchallenged to the checkers with Ryan, Foos, Peterson and Street rounding out the top five. However, Foos failed to go to the scales after the feature and was credited with a last place finish.

A multi-truck pile-up marred the opening lap of the dirt truck feature. But, when the green flew so did Valenti. Valenti drove away the last 14 laps for the win with Cory McCaughey, Keith Sorg, Brian Sorg and Jeff Ward rounding out the top five.

Attica Raceway Park will wrap up the 2016 season with the Attica Ambush on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 2 and 3. On Friday the Lucas Oil Late Model Series will battle for $10,000 to win with the Kistler Racing Products FAST Championship Series presented by KS Sales and Service battling for $5,000 to win for the 410 sprints. On Saturday it’s the first ever Dirt Classic featuring the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions going for $10,000 to win. The late models and 305 sprints will also be in action Saturday.
