By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Both Fremont Speedway and Attica Raceway Park are continuing to take the input received from fans, drivers and sponsors and look for ways to provide more exciting, entertaining racing. Part of that will be to incorporate one-way radio communications between track officials and racers during the 2008 season. All drivers competing in all divisions at both tracks will be required to utilize the radios in 2008.
“We value the input we receive from the fans and teams. One of the things we have heard over the years is why does it take so long to line up cars during yellow and red flags. By incorporating one-way radios we will be able to tell each driver where they are to line up. Coupled with our officials using the line-up boards, it should cut down significantly on the number of yellow flag laps we run,” said Fremont Speedway Promoter Rich Farmer.
“There’s also a safety measure involved in the one-way radios. We’ll be able to tell the drivers when there is a problem on the track and where it is,” added Attica Operations Director Rex LeJeune.
Both tracks will be using the Raceceiver 1600 Elite (a yellow model about the size of a pager or cell phone). The Raceeiver unit includes a battery, clip and ear buds. Both tracks had investigated incorporating transponders in 2008, but after reviewing pricing and following discussions with many of the teams, have decided not to utilize the electronic scoring devices this coming racing season.
“We realize it would have been around $300, which some teams indicated would present some problems. We’re hoping by next year that cost will come down and we can also incorporate a reasonable rental method to help the teams out. We’re going to revisit the transponders again after 2008,” said Farmer.
