Chaney Powers To Attica FAST Win; Ross Earns First Late Model Victory; Weaver Back In Victory Lane

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Rob Chaney knows a good race car when he sits in it. He teamed up with mechanic Daniel Smith Friday on Bud Light, Yuengling Beer, Edward Jones Financial Services Night at Attica Raceway Park Friday and dominated the 30-lap 410 sprint feature.

Chaney led all 30 laps of the O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 Sprint feature for his 9th career Attica win, and even avoided a run-in with a lapped car with two laps to go to dominate the event which was a Kistler Racing Products FAST (Fremont Attica Sprint Title) Championship Series event.

“Well, when you have Byron Reed behind you it might as well be Donny Schatz (four time World of Outlaws champion). There was no chance I was letting up. I don’t care…I would have crashed before I lost that race. When you see that five on the board you know you have to get it on,” said Chaney beside his Hoy’s Bar, Level Performance, Kear’s Speed Shop backed machine.

“It’s the fourth time I’ve run this car. I have to thank Rich Farmer and Daniel Smith. Daniel and I ran 360 car together several years back and won a lot of races and I’ve been looking for an opportunity to get back with him for a long time and I’m real happy to be back racing with him right now,” added Chaney of his third win of 2012, the other two coming at another race track in another car.

“I was just trying to keep up with the car. I haven’t raced that much this year and the track was pretty demanding. I’m not young any more but I tried to pretend I was out there. This car has been fast every time it has hit the track. Shane Stewart ran it some (won an All Star race) and I’ve run it some. It’s a great opportunity for me,” concluded Chaney. “I have to thank, all the fans. You know Attica and Fremont….you go race a lot of places and coming back here…this is one of the best places in the country to race. I hope all the fans realize how lucky they are to have these tracks and the cars that come run at these tracks on a weekly basis.”

In the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Models, it looked like Rusty Schlenk was headed to his fourth win of the season at Attica. But, a flat tire handed the lead back to Charing Cross, Ontario, Canada’s Chris Ross, who had led early and then stayed close to Schlenk. Ross then held off Ken Hahn the last five laps for his first career Attica victory.

“He left me in his dust and I thought I was running for second. But then he just started to slow down after that one caution and I thought well maybe we’ll get a little luck our way and get one back. I love coming here. I wish I could come here every Friday, but being three and half hours away and working every day…it’s kind of hard,” said Ross beside his Field Electric, Great Canadian Oil Change, Lube Tech, Autotech, backed #18r.

“I did a lot better than the last time I was here. I almost hit the flagman,” added Ross, who crashed into the front stretch fence, tearing down a big section. “I want to thank my wife, Shelley of course, and Scott Gressman who built me an awesome motor.”

In the Fremont Fence 305 Sprints, Paul Weaver came back after missing six weeks following surgery, and passed defending track champion Nate Dussel on a restart with five laps to go, and went on to his 29th career victory. Weaver first victory of the season keeps him atop the track’s all-time win list for the division.

“Thank God for cautions. The top just looked so much faster I was afraid to go down there. If you wanted to settle for third or fourth you might as well stayed there but I didn’t want to settle,” said Weaver beside his M&L Excavating, Weaver Performance, Buckeye Mobile Coating, Hampshire Engines, Schiets Motorsports backed #1w. “After missing six weeks, if I can wake up and move in the morning I might think about racing tomorrow night. Hopefully none of those other guys can catch me. I have to keep racing and keep adding to my win total.”

F.A.S.T. 410 Sprints – Rob Chaney #29
In the 30-lap O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 Sprint feature, Chaney and Reed would bring the field to the green with Chaney taking a big lead over Reed, Chris Bell, Brian Lay, Craig Mintz and Caleb Helms. After two laps were scored, Travis Philo would spin to wipe out Chaney’s big lead. But when the green reappeared, Chaney again blasted to a quick 8 car length lead while Reed had his hands full with Bell.

While battling for third, Helms would spin on lap four to bring out the yellow. Again on the restart, Chaney drove to a commanding lead over Reed, Bell, Mintz, Brandon Martin and Bryan Sebetto. On lap six, Mintz, the Attica point leader, would drive into third.

Chaney would catch the back of the field on lap nine and encountered heavy lapped traffic on by the 11th circuit, allowing Reed to close with Mintz, Martin, Sebetto and Bell in pursuit. But, once clear of the traffic, Chaney again pulled away until the caution flew on lap 20 for Jody Keegan. With 10 laps to go, Chaney had put nearly half the field a lap down, with only 12 cars on the lead lap.

With a clear track, Chaney would again open up a commanding lead when the green came back out with Reed pulling away from Mintz, Martin, Sebetto, Bell, Duane Zablocki and Dean Jacobs. With just three laps remaining, Chaney was again racing into heavy lapped traffic, but Reed and Mintz could not close.

With two circuits to go, Chaney avoided disaster. He made contact with Caleb Helms in turn four as he attempted to put him a lap down. Chaney was able to continue on as he drove away for the win. Reed, Mintz, Martin and Sebetto would round out the top five.

Mintz was able to cut into Sebetto’s lead for the $10,000-to-win Kistler Racing Products FAST Championship Series title while also padding his Attica point lead.

Summit UMP Late Models – Chris Ross #18R
Matt Irey and Ross would bring the field to the green in the 25-lap late model feature, with Ross taking the lead over Irey, Ky Harper, Dan Wallace, Ken Hahn, Rusty Schlenk and Ryan Missler. Ross was able to pull away slightly as Irey and Harper were locked in a great battle for second with Hahn, Schlenk and Wallace also battling for fourth.

The first caution would fly on lap five for a Mike Bores Spin which also saw Harper slide off the track and stop. On the restart, Ross would lead as Schlenk drove into second with Irey, Hahn, Wallace, Chris Keller and Cody Scott in pursuit. Ryan Missler would stop on lap seven with a flat tire to bring out the caution. Ross had his hands full with Schlenk on the restart as Hahn, Irey, Wallace and Keller waged a terrific battle for third.

But, Troy Catterene would spin on lap eight for another caution. Again on the restart, Ross and Schlenk would race side by side for the lead with Hahn, Irey, Wallace, Keller and Scott battling for third while 19th starter Larry Kingseed closed. On lap 12, Schlenk would execute a slider in turns three and four to take the lead. A lap later, and John Bores would spin to bring out another caution.

On the restart, Schlenk was able to pull away from Ross with Hahn and Irey continuing their battle for third. After his early race problems, Harper was also on the move, moving into eighth by lap 14. Scott and Brandon Perkins would spin in separate incidents to bring out the caution with eight laps remaining.

On the restart, Schlenk slipped off the top side of turn two, allowing Ross to close with Hahn and Irey also making up ground. With five laps to go, Schlenk began to slow as Ross drove to his inside with Hahn, Irey and Harper also closing. Ross would grab the lead on lap 21 as Schlenk stopped with a flat right rear tire.

On the restart, Ross would have to hold off a charging Hahn while Irey was locked in a fantastic battle with Harper for third. However, with three laps remaining, Harper would smack into the front stretch wall, ending his great run and bringing out the caution.

Ross was able to drive away from Hahn, Irey, Kingseed and Wallace on the restart. As he came out of turn four to the checkers, Ross nearly drove off the cushion into the front stretch wall, but gathered it back up to score the win over Hahn, Irey, Kingseed and Wallace as only 10 cars finished the event.

F.A.S.T. 305 Sprints – Paul Weaver #1W
Dustin Stroup and Dussel would pace the field to the green in the 25 lap Fremont Fence 305 Sprint feature. Dussel would drive into the lead over Stroup, Weaver, D.J. Foos, Dustin Dinan and Ross Moore. While Dussel pulled away, Foos would take third on lap two, but Weaver would continue to race to his outside.

The first caution would fly on lap seven for a Moore spin. A front torsion bar would fall out of Foos’ mount either just before or during the caution as Weaver had retaken third. With a clear track, Dussel would again pull away from Stroup as Weaver, Foos, Dinan, Jimmy Colvin, Paige Polyak, John Ivy and Steve Rando gave chase.

Zack Kramer would spin on lap 12 with the restart running order Dussel, Stroup, Weaver, Foos, Dinan, Polyak, Colvin, Rando, Ivy, Jordan Ryan and Jamie Miller. Dussel would build up a substantial lead until Tyler Gunn would spin on lap 16, collecting Junior Felver. However, the caution would actually benefit Dussel as it gave him a clear track and kept him out of heavy lapped traffic.

Dussel would drive off when the green reappeared as Stroup now had his hands full with Weaver. Weaver would drive into the runner-up spot on lap 18, and when the caution flew on lap 20 for another Moore spin, it put him right on Dussel’s rear bumper with Stroup, Foos, Dinan, Polyak, Rando and Ryan in pursuit. On the restart, Weaver executed a perfect slider in turns one and two to take the lead.

The caution would fly a lap later for Jamie Miller who made contact with Colvin and spun, collecting Felver. Weaver would then drove away from Dussel the remaining four laps to score the in with Foos holding on to third while Dinan, Stroup and Polyak rounded out the top five.

There will be no racing at Attica next week as the Attica Independent Fair takes place. Ohio’s Finest Racing speed plant will wrap up the 2012 season with three Saturday nights of racing beginning with WNWO NBC Channel 24/Ohio Logistics Night on Aug. 18 with the 410 and 305 sprints, UMP late models and dirt trucks in action.
