Andrews Adds To FAST Point Lead With 2nd Straight Attica Win; Schlenk Earns 1st Late Model Win; Ryan Last Lap 305 Victory; Roepke Tames Trucks
By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Chris Andrews can feel that championship. The Sandusky, Ohio driver won his second straight 410 sprint feature at Attica Raceway Park Friday to pad his lead in the track’s point standings and in the Kistler Racing Products FAST (Fremont Attica Sprint Title) Championship Series.
Andrews took the lead from Brian Lay in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 Sprint feature on lap 13 and picked his way through traffic to score his sixth career win at Attica on Kear’s Speed Shop/Ohio CAT Fan Appreciation Night.
“Good racing…we (Brian Lay) banged wheels there for a minute. Brian’s car was fading a little bit and we capitalized on it,” said Andrews beside his Burmeister Racing/Lucas Oil/Goofy Golf/Adkins Sanitation and Fence/Applebee’s Restaurant/Schiets Tender Touch Car Wash backed #16.
“That sign (scoreboard) needs to be a little bit smaller because I can watch the laps clicked down. Sometimes I don’t need to know that information and just race. I have to thank Rollie, Mikey, Tommy, Rodney, Sonny and Sharon and Paul Kistler for putting together an awesome motor. And OC Shocks. We’ve really tuned this thing in lately,” continued Andrews.
In the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Models, McClure, Ohio’s Rusty Schlenk held off Jeff Babock for his first win of the year at Attica. It was his division leading 19th career win at the track.
“They don’t have to look good to go fast. We went on the Summer Nationals this past week and had some bad luck and tore the crap out of everything. We got it pieced back together and got it here. I have to give a big thanks to the guys for helping me all week. A bunch of late nights trying to get this thing put back together,” said Schlenk beside his Dowdy Welding and Fabrications/Velocita Fire Suits/Landrum Springs/Main and Company/Kercher Race Engines backed #91.
“I knew the slide job was coming from Jeff….he owed me one from last week. I have to apologize for that…I gave him a bad slide job at Oak shade and got into him. I knew I had one coming. I like racing with Jeff,” added Schlenk who has a total of 9 wins in 2014 but this was his first at Attica.
In the Foster’s Auto Body 305 Sprints, Castalia, Ohio’s Jordan Ryan muscled his way under Bobby Clark on the last lap to take the lead. But in the final two corners, a lapped car held Ryan up and Clark raced to his outside but Ryan won the drag race to the checkers. It was Ryan’s second win of the season at Attica and his fifth career victory.
“I wasn’t catching him (Clark) and I was like man I’m going to finish second. I started catching him in traffic and I got under him and I knew it was going to be tight. We touched a little bit but we stayed clean and didn’t jump each other wheels,” said Ryan beside his Frosty Frog/J&J Automotive/Griff’s Engines/Village Pizza House/Kistler Racing Products backed #5.
“We’re really consistent this year and we’re going to keep trying to do that and stay in the point lead,” added Ryan.
In the Fremont Fence Dirt Trucks Woodville, Ohio’s Daniel Roepke Jr. held off Art Ball and Kent Brewer to score his eighth career victory.
“It’s been awhile since we were on the horse track here. We were tight in the heat race. My biggest problem is trying not to think when I’m out there when no one else is around me…that’s when I screw up,” said Roepke beside his Perkins Tree Service/Village of Elmore/Vision Quest backed #88.

O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 Sprints – Chris Andrews #16
In the 30 lap 410 sprint feature Brian Lay and Jamie Veal would bring the field to green in front of a packed grandstands. Before a lap could be completed Cale Thomas would spin. When the green flew again Lay had the advantage over Andrews, Veal, Caleb Helms, Byron Reed, Bryan Sebetto and Cole Duncan.
Lay pulled away slightly as Andrews ran comfortably in second while Helms slid into third on lap two. Veal would challenge for the third spot from lap four through lap 9 as the leaders prepared to race into lapped traffic. Thomas would spin again, keep the lead pack out of lapped traffic.
When the green reappeared Lay continued to lead Andrews, Helms, Veal, Reed and Sebetto. On lap 13 Andrews got a great run on Lay and shot under him to take the top spot exiting turn four. As they raced into turns one and two Lay returned the favor but the caution would fly for a stalled Travis Philo.
The restart order was Andrews, Lay, Helms, Veal, Sebetto, Reed, Duncan and Cap Henry. When the green flew so did Andrews, pulling away from Lay as Veal drove around Helms for third with Sebetto joining in that battle. Helms would regain third at the half-way point.
With 10 laps to go the leaders were getting ready to encounter heavy lapped traffic and Andrews caution it in just the right spots on the track and easily worked his way through. Lay, Helms and now Sebetto and Reed closed as did Henry, Duncan and 15th starter Jim Nier. With six laps to go Helms got around lay for second with Sebetto and Reed racing side by side for fourth.
Brandon Martin would spin with five laps remaining and the restart order was Andrews, Helms, Lay, Reed, Sebetto, Henry, Duncan, Nier and 16th starter Caleb Griffith. Andrews was able to pull away on the restart as Helms and Lay battled for second. Lay would regain the runner-up spot as the white flag flew.
Andrews drove the bottom groove to the win over Lay, helms, Reed and Sebetto.

Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Models- Rusty Schlenk #91
Schlenk and Ken Hahn led the field to green in the 25-lap late model feature with Schlenk gaining the advantage over Hahn, Jeff Babcock, Mike Bores, Bobby Michaels, John Garvin Jr., Rocky Owens and Matt Irey. After a lap was scored Michaels would spin, collecting Ryan Missler. When the green reappeared Schlenk led but Babcock slipped into second and closed quickly, bringing Bores into third.
The caution flew on lap seven for debris with the running order Schlenk, Babcock, Bores, Owens, Garvin, Irey, Hahn and Devon Shiels. The action would heat up when the green flew with Schlenk and Babcock trading slide jobs with Bores ready to capitalize on a mistake. On lap 11 Hahn would spin.
On the ensuing restart Schlenk was able to pull away slightly with Babcock, Bores, Garvin, Owens, Shiels, Irey and Chris Keller in tow. But, with 9 laps to go Babcock came back to life and battled with Schlenk for the lead. The two raced side by side and nose to tail over the next hand full of laps with Bores, Garvin and Owens staying close.
Michael would bring out the final caution with two laps to go. On the restart Schlenk pulled away from Babock and would go on to lead every lap on route to the win. Babcock, Bores, Garvin and Owens would round out the top five.

Foster Auto Body 305 Sprints – Jordan Ryan #5R
In the 25-lap 305 sprint feature Kyle Capodice and Bobby Clark would bring the field to green with Capodice gaining the advantage over Clark, Dustin Dinan, John Ivy, Nate Dussel, Jason Keckler and Dan McCarron. Clark would race to Capodice’s outside and would take the lead on lap 3.
Clark would catch the back of the pack by lap eight with Capodice battling with Dinan, Dussel and 7th starter Jordan Ryan. Dinan took second on lap 11 when the caution would fly for a Dussel spin. On the restart Ryan slid into third followed by Capodice, Keckler, T.J. Michael, Ivy, Steve Rando, Tyler Gunn and Trey Jacobs.
Ryan drove under Dinan for second on lap 14 with Capodice maintaining fourth followed by Michael and Rando. Seth Schneider would bring out the caution on lap 15 and on the restart Dinan challenged Ryan for the lead as Clark pulled away. While everyone was running the bottom, Rando would buzz the top groove, moving into fourth.
With eight laps to go Clark led Ryan with Rando moving into third followed by Dinan, Michael, Capodice, Keckler and Ivy. When the five-to-go signal was given Clark’s front wing looked as though it had dropped onto the hood of his car and Ryan started closing as they raced into traffic.
After taking the white flag Ryan would squeeze to the inside of Clark in turns one and two to take the lead. As they raced down the back stretch Ryan and Clark were side by side with a lapped car right in their path. Clark attempted to go high and Ryan dove low as they split the lapped machine. Ryan would drive to the win over Clark, Rando, Dinan and Michael.

Fremont Fence Dirt Trucks – Dan Roepke Jr #88
Art Ball and Daniel Roepke brought the field to green for the 15-lap dirt truck feature with Roepke gaining the advantage over Ball, Kent Brewer, Kyle Cline, Shawn Valenti and Matt Foos. As Roepke pulled away slightly Ball and Brewer raced side by side for second with Valenti driving into fourth by lap three.
Jeff Warnick brought out the feature’s only caution on lap four with Roepke leading Ball, Brewer, Valenti, Foos, Cline and Brad Keckler. At the half-way point Roepke had a slight lead while Ball and Brewer continued their battle for second and behind them Valenti and Foos raced side by side for fourth.
Brewer would finally take the second spot on lap 8 and with five laps to go something broke on the left front of Ball’s machine as Valenti raced into third. Foos would move into fourth on lap 12 as Roepke drove away.
Roepke would easily pick up the win over Brewer, Valenti, Foos and Keckler.
