4.21.17 Results Bazell Race Fuels Night

ATTICA, Ohio – Once in the lead, Doug Drown pulled away for a convincing late model victory on Bazell Race Fuels Night at Attica Raceway Park. Paul Weaver would also dominate in the 305 sprint feature while Shawn Valenti scored a half track victory in the dirt trucks as well.

In the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Model feature Drown, who rolled off 11th on the starting grid, battled Rusty Schlenk for several laps mid-way through before taking the lead on lap 16 and then pulled away the remaining laps for his second win of the season. Ironically, the victory ties Drown with Schlenk for the top spot in all time wins in the division at Attica, each with 22 checkers.

“It was a heck of a race between two of the best here when you go off the wins. It was fun racing with him (Schlenk) like that. I kept seeing him there and knew I wasn’t pulling away really and the lapped traffic I got lucky and picked them off. It was a heck of a battle. I don’t think I’ve been up on the wheel like that going in and out of traffic and racing for position. Hats off to the guys…Cody has a new set-up on tonight. I was a little disappointed on my end last Saturday..as Mrs. Burns calls it ‘a half bubble off’ …we weren’t half a bubble off tonight. I also want to thank Keith Berner and Brent for giving me a heck of a shock package,” said Drown beside his Hall’s Auto Sales, Efco Power Equipment, ABR Farms, Kar Connection, Malcuit Racing Engines, Hoosier Tires backed machine.

Paul Weaver, who failed to start the feature last Saturday due to engine problems, took the lead in the Fremont Fence 305 Sprint feature on lap seven and pulled away until a red flag on lap 11. But that didn’t slow down Attica’s defending track champion as he drove away when the green reappeared to record his third win out of four events. For Weaver, who leads all drivers in career 305 sprint wins, it was his 38th victory at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” speedplant.

“This thing is so easy to drive you or even my wife could win with it. I’ve raced for about 30 years now and I’ll say if I had this car from day one…it would be the oldest car out there..I’d never sell it. This is an ‘09 Maxim. Bob Hampshire had it in his loft for about three years. I wrecked my car and asked if he wanted to sell it and I’ve had it on and off the track a couple of times and wrecked it. He called Maxim and they had one more just like it and he bought it. I think he’s saving it for Creed (Kemenah) his grandson,” Weaver said.

“When I turned 50 last November I didn’t think I’d win another race so I must be going down hill from here,” joked Weaver.

Valenti, who is also racing a 410 sprint car in 2017, led all 15 laps of the dirt truck feature, taking the checkers over a half a track ahead of the field for his 12th career Attica victory.

“We’re just out here having fun. Learning to buzz the cushion around here in a 410 definitely helps in this thing. I have to thank A+ Auto Center. If anyone needs car work done go see Adam Jones. Also want to thank Craig Miller Trucking, Best Performance, Dave Story Equipment and JP Enterprise. Without these guys it wouldn’t be possible,” Valenti said.

In the 25 lap late model feature Charlie Duncan and Jarrett Rendel brought the field to green with Duncan gaining the advantage as Ryan Markham took second bringing Schlenk to third. Duncan pulled away slightly as Markham and Schlenk battled for second with Devin Shiels and Drown in tow.

Rendel would bring out the caution with five laps and on the restart Gregg Haskell and Bob Hornikel got together.

When the green flew the battle was on between Duncan, Schlenk, Markham and Drown. Duncan and Schlenk raced side by side over the next four laps before Schlenk drove to the high side of Duncan for the lead on lap 10. Schlenk raced into lapped traffic by lap 12 with Duncan and teammate Drown battling for second with Markham staying close.

Schlenk encountered heavy lapped traffic with 10 laps to go, allowing Drown and Markham to close as Duncan faded to fourth. Drown used the lapped cars to his advantage to take the lead on lap 16 and pulled away slightly.

Schlenk had one last rally in him and closed on Drown’s rear bumper with five laps to go. Drown would slice his way through the lapped cars and took the win over Schlenk, Markham, Duncan and Eric Spangler.

Seth Schneider and Kelsey Ivy brought the field to green for the 25 lap 305 sprint feature with Schneider taking the lead over fourth starter Weaver with Ivy, Jason Keckler and Ricky Peterson in tow.

The action was halted by a Brad Keckler spin with three laps in. Weaver used the restart to apply pressure to Schneider with Jason Keckler, Nate Dussel (up from 11th), Peterson, Steve Rando and Jordan Ryan in pursuit. Weaver executed a perfect slider for the lead on lap seven and quickly pulled away.

Heavy lapped traffic faced the leaders by lap 10 with Weaver leading Schneider while Jason Keckler and Dussel battling for third. Ryan and Rando tangled on lap 11 with both flipping on the front stretch. Both drivers were uninjured but Weavers lead was wiped out.

When the green flew so did Weaver, pulling away to a commanding lead while Schneider ran comfortably in second with Jason Keckler, Dussel and now Jamie Miller having an entertaining battle for third.

Weaver’s lead was insurmountable as he took the white flag. Schneider would slip off the cushion in turn two, giving second to Dussel. Weaver would drive to nearly a five second victory over Dussel, Miller, Jason Keckler and Kyle Capodice.

The 15 lap dirt truck feature was essentially over when the green flew. Outside front row starter Valenti jumped into the lead and disappeared from the field. However, the race for second was very entertaining involving Cory McCaughey, Matt Foos, Dustin Keegan and Jim Holcomb.

Valenti would take the checkers in the non-stop affair over Foos, Keegan, McCaughey and Holcomb.
Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, April 28 on Kear’s Speed Shop Night. It will be an All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads FAST Championship Series presented by Ohio Logistics night for the Hammer Pallets 410 Sprints and a JLH General Contractor FAST 305 Sprint Series presented by Engine Pro with the late models also in action.

4.15.17 Results HD Supply Spring Nationals Night #2

By Brian Liskai ATTICA, Ohio – In just his 15th time behind the wheel of a winged sprint car and only his second night – the first was Friday – racing at Attica Raceway Park, Lebanon, Indiana’s Spencer Bayston scored his first ever Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions win. Bayston’s $5,000 win closed out a perfect weekend of racing for the 28th Annual HD Supply Spring Nationals presented by Merrill Lynch Financial Services and Fisher Performance.

Bayston became the third consecutive driver to record his first career win at Attica, following Caleb Helms and Friday night’s winner D.J. Foos. His win came on the 113th appearance of the All Stars at the track.

Bayston, 18, has primarily raced midgets so far in his young driving career, including finishing runner-up in the USAC National Midget standings in 2016. Last year he hooked up with Kevin and Jordan Swindell to run a few sprint car races.

“Thank you so much Kevin and Jordan…they built this program. It’s unbelievable what they can do to get me comfortable. We ran a hand full of races last year just because Kevin bought a frame and then he bought this and he bought that and we borrowed a trailer and went and ran as many races as we could. Then we came out this year and they put some serious time and effort into this thing and I cannot thank them enough. It’s going to be a fun year,” said Bayston beside his Premier Trucking, Walker Filters, Swindell Speed Lab, John Christner Trucking back #39.

Bayston had built a four second lead late in the race but a caution with eight laps to go put Cole Duncan and Tim Shaffer right on his rear bumper. Bayston hit his marks perfectly and pulled away for the win.

“There in traffic we were getting through I thought pretty clean. I wasn’t sure who was behind me. I was just trying to conserve my tires until I could start to feel the rubber build. But holy crap we’re in victory lane at Attica. I didn’t even know where to go. I went on the front stretch like I guess that’s where to go. This place is packed. Thank you to all of you who came out,” Bayston said.

Lockborne, Ohio’s Cole Duncan, who led the first eight laps, would hold off Tim Shaffer for a second place run.

“Spencer was too good all weekend. He was probably the best car all weekend. Congrats to those guys. They are going to be fun to race with this year. They are going to be a hand full obviously,” Duncan said.

“We were really bad in the heat race and just kind of hung on. My guys went to work. I can’t thank Jamie and my dad and the rest of my crew enough. We threw everything but kitchen sink at it for the dash and made a big stride. We were pretty good in the feature and were probably a third place car…Macedo (Carson) was pretty good too. We did all we could,” added Duncan beside his Helm’s Construction, Motorcity Auto Transport; EcoMend, Wolfden Products backed #22.

Four time All Star champion Tim Shaffer battled in the top four the entire 40-lap feature and settled for a third place finish.

“The guys are just working really hard. It’s fun to be competitive again. With Cody Jacobs on board I don’t have to think any more…I just have to drive. The Rudzik and Demyan guys are just giving us great equipment and are behind us 100 percent,” said Shaffer of his Rudzik Excavating, Triple X Chassis, VRP Shocks, FK Rod Ends, Scoville Designs backed #49.

Mike Bores celebrated his birthday in style, winning his third career late model feature at Attica. It wasn’t easy for the Bellevue, Ohio driver as he waged a terrific battle with Ryan Markham, Eric Spangler and Devin Shiels.

“That white flag came and I was like ‘don’t mess your marks up because the guys will rip my butt when I get back to the trailer. This is the best birthday gift I’ve ever had. I have to thank Underground Utilities, Accu-force, Burns Electric, Cam-Tec, Hawk’s Auto Reconditioning and all my guys who worked their butts off this morning,” Bores said.

Gibsonburg, Ohio’s Nate Dussel grabbed the lead when Chase Dunham slipped off the track on lap 10 and then nursed home a smoking engine to claim his 15th career Attica win in the Fremont Fence 305 Sprints.

“I’m pretty sure we toasted a two-race-old motor. That puts a damper on it. It will be a fun little Easter Sunday cleaning up all this oil and ripping a motor out. I thought with eight to go it was at 260 (degrees) but I heard Scott Gressman (engine builder) saying if you pull in I’ll punch you. I guess we’ll just pay the price. I had to figure Bobby Clark was on the move if he was second and honestly if he would have passed me I would have pulled off. He wasn’t showing his nose so I wasn’t going to pull off even though I was getting covered in fluid,” Dussel said.

“I can’t thank everyone enough who’s on the side of this. We have a beautiful race car and it’s because of all their help. Al Davis of Al Davis Carpet and Tracy with Industrial Movers…his son is here tonight. Have to thank Bill Berrier and Real Geese and Scott Gressman and Donnie Atkinson and Wurtec,” added Dussel.

In the 40-lap All Star feature Duncan and Macedo brought the field to green with Duncan gaining the advantage over Shawn Dancer, Macedo, Jordan Ryan and Tim Shaffer. Jac Haudenschild would suffer front damage to bring out the caution. Another caution flew with three laps scored with the running order Duncan, Macedo, Dancer, Schaffer, Bayston, Chris Andrews and Chad Kemenah.

Once the green flew again the battle up front was entertaining with Duncan trying to hold off Macedo while Dancer, Shaffer, Bayston, Ryan and Kemenah battled. By the eighth circuit Duncan and Macedo were trading “sliders” for the lead with Bayston closing.

Macedo used heavy lapped traffic on the ninth lap to grab the lead while Bayston took the runner-up spot on lap 11. Dancer’s good run came to an abrupt halt on lap 13 as he spun off the track. The restart order was Macedo, Bayston, Shaffer, Duncan, Kemenah, Ryan, Byron Reed (from 17th) and Dale Blaney (from 14th).

Macedo’s run at the front came to an end a lap later as his mount lost power, handing the lead to Bayston. When the green flew so did Bayston, driving to a nearly three second lead as he raced into lapped traffic. Meanwhile Duncan and Shaffer were locked in a good battle for second while Ryan and Kemenah raced hard for fourth with Travis Philo and Blaney staying close.

Now the car on the move was Ryan Smith who took a provisional and started 25th and by lap 22 had worked his way to eighth.

Bayston’s lead grew to four second when the caution flew for Ryan who spun while battling for fourth with eight laps to go. Bayston got a great restart and drove to the win while Duncan held off Shaffer for the runner-up spot. Rounding out the top five were Blaney and current All Star point leader Kemenah.

Rounding out the top 10 were Philo, Smith, Caleb Armstrong, Andrews and Brian Lay.

The 25-lap Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Model feature got off to a slow start with a couple of multi-car crashes. Once things settled down it was a barn-burner.

Ryan Markham jumped into the early lead but he had company in the form of Cody Scott, Shiels, Spangler, Bores and Friday night’s winner Doug Drown. Markham led by a nose lap after lap while the runner-up spot changed hands nearly every lap.

At the half-way point Markham led Spangler, Bores, Shiels, Drown, Scott and Brian Ruhlman. Bores, using the extreme low groove, took second on lap 15 and challenged Markham while Spangler often made it three wide for the lead.

After 18 green flag laps the caution flew just after Bores had taken the lead. Bores would hit his marks the final seven laps, though he made contact on several occasions with the infield tractor tires, and drove to the win over Shiels, Spangler, Matt Irey and Markham.

Kevin Mingus and Chase Dunham brought the field to green for the 25 lap 305 sprint main with Mingus gaining the slight advantage. Dunham grabbed the lead on the second circuit with Mingus hanging tough while Dussel, Ricky Peterson, John Ivy and Steve Rando giving chase.

Following a lap three caution, Dunham continued to lead Dussel, Mingus, Peterson, Bobby Clark and Ivy. Mingus would spin while battling for third on lap four. When the green reappeared Dunham drove away from the field while Dussel held off Clark and Peterson for second.

Dunham got over the turn two banking on lap 10, handing the lead to Dussel with Clark and Peterson taking second and third. Dussel hit heavy lapped traffic on lap 14 allowing Clark and Peterson to close while Rando and John Ivy battling for fourth.

A caution with nine laps to go gave Dussel a clear track over Clark, Peterson and Rando. However, as the green came back out and the laps ticked off, smoke began billowing from under the hood of Dussel’s mount.

Dussel dropped down and began nursing his ailing sprint car as Clark and Rando closed. Dussel was able to hang on for the win over Clark, Rando, Peterson and Jamie Miller.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, April 21 on Bazell Race Fuels Night with the late models, 305 sprints and dirt trucks in action.

ATTICA, Ohio – D.J. Foos wasn’t going to let eight time and defending Attica Raceway Park 410 sprint champion Byron Reed intimidate him. The Fremont, Ohio driver, in only his fifth year behind the wheel of a 410 sprint, hunted down and then passed Reed with four laps to go and drove to his first career Attica victory to open the 28th Annual HD Supply Spring Nationals Presented by Merrill Lynch Financial Services and Fisher Performance.

Foos, a former Attica 305 sprint champion who owns 15 career victories at the track in that division, is in his second year driving the Jay Kiser owned #23. The team has clicked early in 2017, recording a runner-up finish a couple of weeks ago at Mansfield Motor Speedway. It wasn’t easy for Foos who had a close encounter with the front stretch wall with two laps to go. But, he gathered his composure and took the Jet Express, Crown Battery, Kistler Racing Products, Kistler Engines, JLH General Contractor, NAPA of Bryan, Shelluke’s Bar backed machine to victory lane to claim the $5,000 top prize.

The win also opens the ninth season for the All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads FAST Championship Series Presented by Ohio Logistics. Foos is a former FAST 305 champion and hopes to dethrone Reed for the 410 FAST title in 2017.

“This is like a dream come true. There’s no better man here to race with than Byron Reed. If you want to be the best you have to beat the best and tonight it happened. When I hit that wall I had all kinds of things going through my head. I was like ‘oh man don’t give this one away…I know Byron’s going to try and come back,’” Foos said.

“I’m so excited for this team. We ran really well at Mansfield a couple of weeks ago and now we have momentum. I knew coming into tonight…my buddy Keith texted me and said ‘top five tonight, over-under.’ I started to text him ‘I’m going there to win.’ I deleted that and said hopefully a top five. I should have stuck with my original text. I can’t thank Jay Kiser, Nicole, Cody Renfro and all our great sponsors enough for always sticking with me,” Foos added.

After an early race battle with team mate Charlie Duncan, Wooster, Ohio’s Doug Drown drove away the last half of the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Model feature to score his 21st career Attica victory. Drown sits just one win shy of all-time division feature winner Rusty Schlenk.

“It feels good to be back out here with car that handles this good. I have to thank Leroy Hall for all he does for me to be able to go out and have fun. My guys, Cody (Duncan) and Jeff (Drown), my wife…everyone who helps out on this deal. It was fun racing with Charlie there. He let us set up his car…he’s never driven a Swartz car…and for him to be that fast was really cool,” said Drown beside his Hall’s Auto Sales, Kar Connection, Malcuit Engines, Wooster Glass, ABR Farms, Dirt Girl Racewear, Efco Power Equipment backed machine.

Fremont, Ohio’s Paul Weaver – Attica’s defending 305 track champion – survived a restart with five laps to go and drove to his second straight win in the Fremont Fence 305 sprints. Weaver, who tops the division’s all-time win list, now has 37 career Attica 305 sprint victories.

“We really didn’t do much to this car over the winter. We painted the tail section and I bought a new arm guard. That’s it. This car goes forward. It doesn’t spin the tires one bit,” said Weaver beside his M&L Excavating; Hampshire Racing Engines; Schiets Motorsports, Weaver Performance Center backed sprinter.

In the 30-lap Hammer Pallets 410 Sprint feature Cole Duncan and Stuart Brubaker brought the field to green with Brubaker gaining a slight advantage. As Brubaker began to pull away slightly there was a fantastic battle for third between Reed, Carson Macedo and Foos with Adam Kekich and Tim Shaffer in tow.

Action ground to a halt with six laps in when Jordan Ryan took a tumble. On the ensuing restart Thomas Meseraull spun. When the green flew Brubaker led Duncan who had his hands full with Macedo while Reed and Foos battled for fourth. Cody Gallogly would spin on lap nine and when the green flew the battle was on.

Brubaker, Duncan, Reed, Macedo and Foos were locked in a tremendous battle. Reed took second on lap 12 and quickly closed on Brubaker. Reed drove to the extreme low groove as Brubaker tried to block in turns three and four but to no avail as the Monclova Missile took the lead on lap 14. Brubaker fought back and regained the top spot the next circuit with Reed returning the favor on lap 17.

Once in the lead Reed pulled away slightly as Brubaker tried to defending second from Duncan, Macedo and Foos. A caution with nine laps to go for a Dean Jacobs spin set up a classic shoot out. Reed maintained the lead on the restart as Foos drove around Brubaker with Duncan trying to hold off Macedo and Spencer Bayston.

With six laps to go Foos was all over Reed looking for his opportunity to make the winning pass. It came two laps later as Foos drove around Reed with Brubaker, Duncan, Bayston and Macedo staying close.

Foos avoided disaster with two laps to go when he blasted the front stretch wall. He gathered his composure and drove to the win over Reed, Bayston, Duncan and Macedo as Brubaker spun coming to the checkers.

In the 25-lap late model feature, Duncan and Ryan Markham brought the field to green but a two car tangle necessitated another start. After a lap was complete another two car tangle resulted in a brief red as crews worked to separate the cars.

When the green flew again Duncan and Drown waged a great battle for the lead with Markham, Devin Shiels and Eric Spangler staying within striking distance. Drown finally gained the top spot on lap six and began to pull away as Duncan and Markham battled for second.

At the half way point Drown held a commanding lead while the battle for second between Duncan, Spangler, Rusty Schlenk and Markham heated up. Spangler took the runner up spot on lap 13 but could not close on Drown.

Drown pulled away for the win while Spangler held off Schlenk for second with Duncan and Shiels rounding out the top five.

Ricky Peterson and Weaver paced the field for the 25 lap 305 sprint feature with Peterson gaining the advantage over eighth starter Jamie Miller.

Miller drove into the lead on lap two with Weaver blasting from third into the lead a lap later. Action ground to a half on lap six when Dustin Rall got upside down with Weaver leading Peterson, Miller, Nate Dussel, Bobby Clark, Kyle Capodice and 15th place starter Steve Rando.

Weaver got a great restart and pulled away from Peterson who had his hands full with Dussel. Landon LaLonde brought out the caution with 13 laps in with Weaver leading Peterson, Dussel, Miller, Rando, Clark and Capodice.

As Weaver drove away when the green reappeared, Dussel grabbed second on lap 16. Jason Keckler would bring out the final caution with five laps to go, giving Dussel a shot at Weaver. But, Weaver was just too good on the restart and drove away for the win over Dussel, Miller, Peterson and Rando.

Night two of the HD Supply Spring Nationals will be held Saturday, April 15 featuring the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions.

2017 Spring Nationals Preview

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (April 12, 2017) – After opening the month of April with a visit to Atomic Speedway near Chillicothe on Sunday, April 9, the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions will move forward and continue their April march through The Buckeye State with a visit to the Attica Raceway Park on Saturday, April 15, joining a competitive, local contingent of open wheel competitors for the annual HD Supply Spring Nationals worth $5,000. Nearly 20 full-time Arctic Cat All Stars will invade northwest Ohio on Saturday evening; the second of three Ohio appearances for the Series during the month of April.

Saturday’s visit to Attica will be the first of four during the 2017 season for “America’s Series,” as well as the 113th total appearance since the Series first visited the 1/3-mile, clay oval on September 4, 1989. The Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions last visited the home of “Ohio’s Finest Racing” on Saturday, September 3, during the inaugural Dirt Classic Ohio. Wooster, Ohio’s Sheldon Haudenschild was the main event winner, scoring $10,000 for his efforts, as well as a second career Arctic Cat All Star victory at Attica Raceway Park.

Alvada, Ohio’s Chad Kemenah will lead the Arctic Cat All Stars into action on Saturday afternoon. The five-time and defending Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions titlist is the current Series point leader and the most recent feature winner, earning high honors at Atomic Speedway on Sunday, April 9. A last lap pass solidified his position on top of the podium, overtaking the top spot from Lee Jacobs who led the first 29 laps of the 30-lap feature program. Including his recent victory, Kemenah has three top-five finishes during his first six Arctic Cat All Star main event starts.

New Castle, Indiana’s Caleb Armstrong will enter the HD Supply Spring Nationals currently second in the Arctic Cat All Star championship standings, followed by Donny Schatz, Caleb Helms and Danny Dietrich. Armstrong has two top-five finishes on the season, settling for 16th during his most recent All Star start at Atomic Speedway after battling early for a podium finish.

Attica Raceway Park will open pit gates for the HD Supply Spring Nationals at 3:00pm on Saturday, April 15. A full program of Arctic Cat All Star competition, complete with hot laps, qualifying time trials, heat races, and respective mains, will launch at 6:00pm, sharp.
