Tatnell Tops Good Field at Attica; Schlenk Nabs 1st Late Model Win of Year; Brubaker Breaks Into Victory Lane in 305 Sprints

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) A longer than expected meeting with government officials concerning his visa kept Australia’s Brooke Tatnell from racing with the World of Outlaws earlier this week. That, coupled with rainy weather else were, had the Titan Garage Garages and Car Ports team on the road to Attica Raceway Park Friday. It paid off as he collected his first 410 sprint feature win on Custom Chrome Plating Night.

Defending American Late Model Series Champion Rusty Schlenk also broke into the win column for the first time in 2009 in the Fultz Fabrications and Speed Shop UMP Late Models.

Defending Attica Raceway Park 305 sprint champion Stuart Brubaker came back after crashing his mount last week at Fremont Speedway, to record his first win of 2009 in the Fremont Fence 305 Sprints.

Tatnell overcame a rash of early race cautions and red flags and then held off a charging Chad Kemenah to score the win.

It was night #4 of the Kistler Racing Products FAST (Fremont Attica Sprint Title) Championship Series, and early point leaders suffered problems which should cause a big shake-up in the points. The FAST is a separate point system and point fund from that of both race tracks.

“That is a great field of cars for a ‘regular show.’ You had World of Outlaw caliber drivers, All Star drivers and the locals are very tough here,” said Tatnell. “This was a new car and we needed to come here and learn some things before the Outlaws come here at the end of the month (May 29). Rob Hart and the crew gave me a great race car that got better as the race went on.”

Jackson, Michigan’s Schlenk passed early race leader Tyler Boggs on lap 9 and went on to score the late model win.

“Boy did we need that. We’ve got like 10 second place finishes this year.I tell you what, since they went to the full-blown UMP late models here, this field is as tough as you’ll find,” said Schlenk beside his Micro Armor Lubricants, Complete Truck Repair, C.J. Rayburn Race Cars backed #91.

For Brubaker, the win comes after several top five finishes this season. After a great battle with Brad Haudenschild, Brubaker took the lead on lap 15 and powered away for the win.

“My crew won this one. They worked their tails off in the shop all week to put this car back together after I crashed it last Saturday. Also a big thank-you to Jason Deel. We had motor problems and he came to therescue…if it weren’t for him we wouldn’t be racing tonight,” said Brubaker beside his Brubaker Auction Services, C&L Sanitation and Safeway Barricades backed #35. “I finally get to get a picture in victory lane with my wife (Amanda) and baby daughter (Gracie).”

Tatnell overtook Mike Linder at the drop of the green for the 410 sprint feature. Caleb Griffith, Greg Wilson and Phil Gressman waged a great battle for third. The first of three back-to-back cautions would fly on lap five with Tatnell leading Linder, Wilson, Griffith, Gressman, Chad Kemenah and Brandon Wimmer. Wilson would move around Linder on the restart following the third caution while Griffith would move into third on lap 8.

The action would grind to a halt when defending track champion Byron Reed took a nasty tumble on the front stretch on lap 8. He was okay, but his car was done for the night. On the lap following the restart, Kemenah and Griffith would get together on the front stretch battling for third, sending Griffith flipping, which also collected Linder and Mark Keegan. Everyone was uninjured, but Griffith, Linder and Keegan were done for the night.

The race finally found a rhythm by lap with the running order Tatnell, Wilson, Kemenah, Randy Hannagan and 17th starter Tim Shaffer. Following a lap 16 caution, Kemenah began to pressure Tatnell for the next four laps. Then all of a sudden, Tatnell found more speed and pulled away. The real battle was for third between Wilson, Hannagan, Shaffer and Lee Jacobs.

Tatnell did survive a scare on lap 24 as a lapped machine did a 360 spun right in front of him exiting turn two, but he was able to avoid the crash and went on to score the victory over Kemenah, Wilson, Hannagan and Shaffer.

In the 25-lap late model main, Tyler Boggs grabbed the early lead with Noah Wagner and Schlenk battling hard for second. This feature also had a tough time getting going as there were four caution sin the first four laps. Following a lap 8 restart, Schlenk would dive under Boggs on the bottom of turns three and four to grab the lead. A great race for second was going on behind between Jon Henry, Wagner and Ryan Markham. The final caution would fly on lap 13 with the running order Schlenk, Henry, Boggs, Markham and Wagner.

With 10 laps to go, the car on the move was Dusty Moore, who had worked his way up from 13th to fifth. While Schlenk cruised out front, Henry, Boggs, Markham, Moore, Wagner and Ken Hahn put on a tremendous battle. At the checkered it was Schlenk, Henry, Moore, Boggs and Markham rounding out the top five.

Last week’s winner Brad Haudenschild looked like he might repeat in the 305 sprint feature as he jumped into the lead. The battle for second was fantastic between Steve Rando and Brubaker over the next 10 laps. Brubaker would take the runner-up spot on lap 11, and when the leaders hit lapped traffic on lap 15, Brubaker made his move to drive around Haudenschild in turn four.

While Brubaker pulled away, Haudenschild had his hands full with Jake Trevino and a closing John Ivy. Trevino would move into second on lap 20 while Ivy bagged third. Ivy’s great run would end when he looped it out in turn two on lap 23, setting up a two-lap dash to the finish. Brubaker would get the win with Trevino, a resurgent Rando, D.J. Foos and Brad Bowman rounding out the top five.

Earlier in the evening, Attica Raceway Park and Jon Wright’s CustomChrome Plating paid tribute to Mark Keegan, a 12-time sprint champion at Attica and the track’s all-time feature win leader with 55 victories. Keegan was also one of the original founders of Attica Raceway Park 21 years ago. Many friends and family were on hand for the ceremony and the crowd got to listen to the last five laps of the 1995 Ohio Speedweek race at Attica where Keegan passed Steve Kinser to get the biggest win of his career.

One of Keegan’s long-time sponsors, Midwest Transportation and Car and Truck Sales gave an extra $100 to the 410 feature winner and $100 to the fifth and 10th place finishers as well.

It was also announced Attica Raceway Park is putting up a $2,000 bonus if one of the drivers in the top 20 in the track’s points can upset the World of Outlaw drivers on May 29. The highest finishing “Attica regular” – again in the top 20 in points – with the highest feature finish will get a $500 bonus.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, May 22 as the Pepsi 30 Engine Builders Challenge is held, paying the Fremont Fence 305 Sprint feature winner $1,200. The late models and dirt trucks are also on the racing card for the fan appreciation night with general admission only $10.

Attica Raceway Park Ready To Salute All-Time Feature Winner Mark Keegan

On Friday May 15th, Attica Raceway Park pays tribute to its all-time feature winner and current driver Mark Keegan. Mark made the front page of racing newspapers with his accolades on the 1/3-mile clay oval, but “Ohio’s Finest Racing” speedplant was also resurrected with the help of Keegan himself back in 1988. He’s seen a lot in his years in racing from the rise of Gambler Chassis, to the emergance of XXX Race Products, he has raced through the years of Goodyear dominance & in the current Hoosier tire supremacy. Mark sure has seen a lot in the past few decades of sprint car racing in Northern Ohio, but the drive to win still brews inside this feirce competitor.

Take a moment to look back at the many rides that Mark Keegan has driven on his way to collecting 12 track champions and 55 feature wins at Attica Raceway Park … and still counting!

Chinn, Haudenschild, Hennig Are First Time Attica Winners

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Not only did Wayne Chinn, Brad Haudenschild and Dan Hennig beat the competition at Attica Raceway Park Friday night to record their first career wins at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” speedplant, but they had to best Mother Nature as well.

Chinn, of Bradford, Ohio, dominated the Fultz Fabrications and Speedshop UMP Late Model feature on R&R Auto Wrecking and Used Cars/Merrill Lynch Financial Services Night, leaving only eight cars on the lead lap. Had it not been for three cautions during the A-main, Chinn may have lapped the entire field.

“The track was a little choppy, but that’s to be expected with the rain. Gotta thank the staff for working hard to get this race in. We’d all rather race than not race,” said Chinn beside his Erwin Chrysler Dodge Jeep, Sugar Creek Packaging, C.J. Rayburn Racecars backed #1.

Haudenschild, of Fredericksburg, Ohio, took the lead from Steve Rando on lap 9 after Rando bounced out of shape, and then benefitted from cautions as he was mired in lapped traffic to take the Fremont Fence 305 Sprint feature.

“This car is actually the old Frigidaire car…it’s 12 years old, it’s always been a good rough track car…but we have to work the bugs out for slick tracks. But this thing was absolutely awesome tonight,” said Haudenschild beside his R&B Enterprises, Vision Express, Bell Helmets and Simpson Race Products backed #10. “It was definitely my type of race track…but boy I am out of shape. Hopefully this will turn our luck around.”

Hennig, of Castalia, Ohio, led all 15 laps of the dirt truck A-main, but had to hold off a late race charge from defending track champion Cory Ward to score the win.

“I was losing ground a little bit. I was missing my marks there at the end and I was just hoping for the best. Want to thank my dad and my brother, my wife and kids and everyone that helps me everyday of the week work on this thing and get it ready for two nights of racing every weekend,” said Hennig beside his Reidy’s Auto World, Level Performance York Fabrications backed #32h truck.

Following the heat race action, a brief shower caused about a 45-minute delay, but track crews were able to get the racing surface back into shape for the feature events.
At the drop of the green for the late model feature, Chinn bolted into the lead but Ryan Markham wasn’t going to let him get away easily. Following a caution with a lap in the books, Chinn took off and was in lapped traffic in just four laps. Another caution on lap 7 had the running order Chinn, Markham, Dusty Moore, Ryan Missler, Devin Shiels, Justin Chance and Ky Harper, up from his 17th starting spot.

Again it took Chinn just four laps to get into traffic again when the green came back out, but another yellow would fly on lap 11 when Moore’s great run came to and end as he lost power. Two green flag laps and another caution saw the running order, Chinn, Markham, Harper, Doug Drown and Shiels. Once the green flew again, Chinn pulled away as Markham, Harper, and Shiels waged a tremendous battle for second.

It took just four more laps again for Chinn to get into traffic, but he was on cruise control. Markham and Harper continued to race side-by-side for second. A caution for debris flew on lap 23, but Chinn pulled away the last two laps for the victory. Rounding out the top fie were Markham, Harper, Shiels and Jeremy Canada.

“2009 is pretty open for us…will hit all the big races close to home, but we’re going to kind of skip around and see what we can do,” said Chinn.

Steve Rando took command of the 305 sprint feature at the drop of the green with Haudenschild, D.J. Foos, Nate Dussel and Paul Weaver in tow. Rando would hit lapped traffic by lap 7, allowing Haudenschild to close. Exiting turn four to complete the ninth lap, Rando bounced around, allowing Haudenschild to slip underneath for the lead. Foos would bring out the first yellows a lap later as he coasted to a stop in turn four. Haudenschild now led over Rando, Dussel, Weaver and Jake Trevino. Just as Haudenschild was getting into lapped traffic again, another caution for debris would fly on lap 13. The car on the move was defending champion Stuart Brubaker who had moved from 11th to fifth.

The race would go green for awhile now, and Haudenschild hit lapped traffic with five to go, but Rando’s charge came to an end when he stopped in turn four. Now the running order was Haudenschild, Brubaker, Dussel, Weaver, Bobby Clark and Kevin Lee. With a clear track ahead of him, Haudenschild was able to pull away for the win, with Brubaker, Dussel, Clark and Dustin Dinan rounding out the top five.

Hennig grabbed control of the dirt truck feature at the drop of the green with Cory Ward, Josh Lozano and Alex Weichman in tow. The race went non-stop, and Ward was able to mount a challenge for the lead late in the race while Art Ball battled from his ninth starting spot up to third with four laps remaining. Hennig would hold off the challenge for the win with Ward, Ball, Dwight Waltermeier and Weichman rounding out the top five.

Attica Raceway Park will pay tribute to it’s all-time winningest sprint car driver, Mark Keegan, a 12-time champion, on Jon Wright’s Custom Chrome Plating Night, Friday, May 15. Besides the 410 sprints, the UMP Late Models and 305 sprints will be in action. It will also be night #5 for the Kistler Racing Products FAST (Fremont/ Attica Sprint Title) Championship Series.

Scouts To Be Honored On 5.8.09

(Attica, OH) Super late models, 305 sprint cars & dirt trucks headline the action at Attica Raceway Park this Friday night on R&R Auto Wrecking/ Merrill Lynch/ Scouts Night! All Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and scout leaders in uniform will get in FREE to watch some of the best dirt track racing action that’s offered in Ohio. Also adult general admission is only $10 making it an affordable night of entertainment for the entire family!

The Fultz Fabrications & Speed Shop UMP Late Models have created two looming questions on fan’s mind this season so far. First, who will be pulling into the pits on any given Friday since Attica went to full-blown UMP DIRTcar rules this season? And secondly who will eventually win with such stout competition now competing at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” venue? Only former Eldora Dream winner Matt Miller has picked up two feature wins so far this season, which has given him the early lead in track points.

Shawn Valenti will look to continue the Fremont Fence 305 Sprint Car streak of winning back-to-back features as done previously by feature winners Travis Hoffbauer (3/27 & 4/4) and Paul Weaver (4/11 & 3/17). He will have his hands full as the 305 sprint division is stacked with veteran drivers and a wealth of young talent climbing the racing ladder.

Also on the racing card are the dirt trucks who will be making their second appearance of the season at Attica. The ageless Art Ball picked up the first feature win, but the ultra competitive division has many guessing who will win until the checkered flag is dropped due to two & three-wide racing each time they pull out onto the track.
