Henry Remains Undefeated In UMP Late Models at Attica; Rando Leads Wire To Wire In 305 Sprints; Dible Comes From Tail To Take Trucks

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Jon Henry remained unbeaten at Attica Raceway Park after picking up his third straight victory in the Fultz Fabrications and Speed Shop UMP Late Models Friday, April 15. Henry has won every race – including three heats and three features – he has competed in at “Ohio ’s Finest Racing” speed plant this season.

“I don’t know what we’re doing, but it is working. It was another exciting one for the fans…they can go to my website (jonhenryracing.com) and see how Ryan (Missler) and I battled…I had an in-car camera as part of our ‘share the experience’ deal we’re doing this year,” said Henry beside his Wide Open Graphics, Eibach Springs, K&N Filters backed machine. “I have to thank my dad and John McClain for putting this team together.

Henry took the lead on lap 2 and then held off a challenge by two-time Attica champion Missler during the mid part of the race. Henry, who used the bottom groove the first two weeks to take wins, tried the high side early in the race, but when Missler showed him his nose, the Ada , Ohio driver went back to the bottom and pulled away the final 7 laps for the victory on Underground Utilities Inc./ Bazell Race Fuels Night.

“I feel bad for Rusty (Schlenk) and Jeep (VanWormer)…they got taken out early so who knows what might have happened. I felt good up top and I was cruising and all of a sudden I saw Ryan drive under me and I figured I had better go down to stop him and the car actually got better,” added Henry.

Lindsey, Ohio’s Steve Rando survived several caution flags and held off Nate Dussel to claim his second career victory at ARP in the Fremont Fence 305 Sprints.

“We got to start up front and that’s huge, but the car was good and easy to drive. The high line was where I wanted to be, but I almost blew it off the top a couple of times. This is our little motor that we had last year…and it got the job done,” said Rando beside his Garza Construction, Attitudes Hair Salon, Davis Fabrication, Northcoast Sealing backed #19r.

Fostoria, Ohio’s Bob Dible was involved in an opening lap tangle that sent him to the tail. But, the veteran driver remained calm and drove to the front, taking the lead from Art Ball – who is beginning his 50th year of racing at the age of 72 – on lap 12 and going on to record his eighth career Attica win in the Computer Man Dirt Trucks.

“I was mad, but I knew that wouldn’t help, so I just concentrated on getting to the front. We just pulled this truck off the jack stands last weekend,” said Dible beside his Bob’s Machine Shop, BMS Engines backed #17. “I always liked to run the top here, but that didn’t work at Fremont . So, we made some changes to the truck this winter and this thing is awesome on the bottom now.”

Fultz UMP Late Models – Jon Henry #15
It took three tries to get the 25-lap late model feature underway. On the first attempt, Kyle Perry and Ron Miller got together, and then on the second try, Dave Hornikel, Dusty Moore, Rusty Schlenk and Jeep VanWormer tangled, sending Moore, Schlenk and VanWormer to the pits. That moved Henry from his original 10th starting position up to fourth. On the third try, D.J. Miller grabbed the lead as Henry slid into second with Chris Keller, Ryan Missler and John Bores in tow.

Henry would take the top spot a lap later, bringing Keller into second. Henry would build a comfortable lead over Keller while Miller and Missler battled for third with Bores had his hands full with Larry Kingseed and Ryan Markham for fifth. Missler would move into the runner-up spot on lap seven and began to chase down Henry while Keller was comfortable in third. Missler moved to the rear bumper of Henry by lap 10 and they ran nose to tail the next three laps. Missler would dive under Henry on lap 13 and the pair would race side by side with Missler executing a slide job several times in turns one and two with Henry crossing over to maintain the lead down the backstretch.

With eight laps to go, Henry had enough of Missler and moved to the bottom of the track and began to pull away slightly as Keller continued to run alone in third with Bores still battling Miller, Kingseed and Markham for fourth. The only caution – other than the two to start the race – would fly on lap 20 for debris, giving Missler one final shot at Henry. But, “The Steel Driver” stayed on the bottom groove and pulled away for the victory. Missler, Keller, Markham and Kingseed would round out the top five at the checkered.

Fremont Fence 305 Sprints – Steve Rando #19R
In the 25-lap 305 sprint main, Rando used the high line to grab the lead at the drop of the green with Stuart Brubaker moving into second followed by Seth Schneider, Matt Ferrell and Jimmy Colvin. Rando would pull away slightly while Ferrell would slide into the runner-up spot on lap 2. By the fourth circuit, Rando led Ferrell, Brubaker and 11th place starter Nate Dussel. A spin by Justin Franks on lap five would bunch up the field, with all eyes on opening night winner D.J. Foos who had moved from 19th starting spot to eighth. On the restart Rando would pull away from Ferrell who now had to battle Dussel. While Rando rim-rode in front, Ferrell and Dussel battled side-by-side for the runner up spot over the next five laps until Dussel grabbed the second spot on lap 10.

The caution would fly for a Jim Cushing spin on lap 12 with the running order Rando, Dussel, Ferrell, Brubaker, Colvin, Foos, Zack Kramer and Matt Merrill. Junior Felver would tangle with another machine on lap 14, bringing out the yellow flag. Again on the restart Rando would pull away while Dussel tried to close on the bottom. The final caution would fly on lap 19 for a Jason Keckler, Merrill spin. Again, Rando would fight off the restart challenge from Dussel to pull away for the win, with Dussel, Ferrell, Brubaker and Colvin rounding out the top five.

Computer Man Trucks – Bob Dible #17
In the 15-lap dirt truck main, Dible tangled with another machine and spun on the initial start, sending him to the trail. Dwight Waltermeier would lead the opening lap with Ball, Paul Brown Jr., Greg Summit and Brian Sorg in tow. A lap and a caution for a stalled Todd Keegan. On the restart, Ball would dive under Waltermeier and grab the lead. A lap and another caution for a Brian Arnold spin. On the restart Ball would lead while Brown grabbed second. Another lap and another caution for Brown who spun battling Ball for the lead.

The race would go the final 11 laps caution-free.

Ball would pull away slightly on the restart as all eyes were on Dible who had moved into the fourth position from the tail by lap five and into third a lap later. Dible would drive under Waltermeier for the runner-up spot on lap eight and began to quickly close on Ball.

Meanwhile, Waltermeier and Steve Endicott waged a great battle for third. With five laps to go, Dible drove under Ball as the two raced side-by-side for the lead. Exiting turn four as they came down to complete the 12th lap, Ball got sideways and spun as Dible drove off into the lead. Dible would go on to take the victory over Endicott, Brown, who raced back from the tail, Waltermeier and Sorg.

Blaney Comes On Strong Late To Take Attica All Star Win; Henry Gets 2nd Late Model Victory; Weaver Tames 305 Sprints

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) There’s just something about a long race that brings out the best in Dale Blaney. The Hartford, Ohio driver took the lead on lap 32 of the 40-lap HD Supply Spring Nationals at Attica Raceway Park Saturday and went on to his 77th career victory with the O”Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions.

Blaney dove under 6-time Attica track champion Byron Reed in turns one and two on lap 31 for the lead when Reed caught the cushion in turn two and flipped. On the restart, Blaney had the lapped machine of Jac Haudenschild between him and Paul McMahan, drove away for the victory, the 13th in his career at Attica.

“After last weekend we really struggled but we learned a lot. We came here tonight…it’s the same car but it acted totally different. It felt like a normal car…like I could actually race hard again,” said Blaney beside his Ti22 backed machine. “George (Fisher, owner) and Troy (Psurny, crew) had the car great. It’s been a long time since I won here. To beat these guys is pretty good. I had a really good starting spot so I didn’t want to kill my stuff the first 20 laps. I hated to see Byron go by because he’s pretty good here. I kind of followed up to the front and I looked at the board and saw there was 20 laps down and I figured I’d better get going. It probably would have been a pretty good race between him and me.”

In the Fultz Fabrications and Speed Shop UMP Late Models, Ada, Ohio’s Jon Henry held off a last lap charge by Rusty Schlenk to earn his second feature win in a row at Attica . It wasn’t easy, as Henry took the checkered by only a half a car length over Schlenk, the 2010 National UMP Champion.

“That was a little close…I was trying to take it easy because I knew dad didn’t want me hitting those tractor tires down there. I started to hear something with about two to go and I was like I need to stop taking it easy,” said Henry beside his K&N Filters, Wide Open Graphics backed #15. “I thought I would just stay in my line and make him work for it. It’s hard when you get out front because you just know how far you can push the race car. I tried to hang around the middle of the race track…I had a really good bite there.”

“Two in a row…this is awesome. I can’t believe how many fans are here…this is a crazy house. I have to thank my dad and John McClain for all their help,” added Henry.

Fremont’s Paul Weaver didn’t have a ride a month ago. So he and some friends purchased a car and it paid off as Weaver took the Fremont Fence 305 Sprint feature after a race-long battle with Jimmy Colvin. It was Weaver’s 25th career victory in the 305 sprints, tying him with Mike Linder for first on the track’s all-time win list.

“We got jacked around and had to buy this thing late in the game. But, if we keep winning it will pay off,” said Weaver beside his #82 sprinter.

O’Reilly All Star Sprints – Dale Blaney #2
At the drop of the green for the All Star feature, outside front row starter Lucas Wolfe wheeled into the lead with pole-sitter Paul McMahan, Blaney, Reed, Cody Darrah, Cole Duncan and Tim Shaffer in tow. Several early cautions kept the race from developing a rhythm. Jac Haudenschild and Johnny Mackison Jr. would tangle on lap two to bring out the yellow flag. Two more laps – which saw Wolfe pulling away while McMahan, Blaney and Reed waged a great battle for second – and another yellow for a Darrah spin. A lap and another Darrah spin. Two more laps and a David Gravel spin. Again, two more laps and a caution for Duncan.

Then the race would go caution-free the next 21 laps, setting up some exciting battles. Wolfe pull away slightly with McMahan comfortably in second while Blaney and Reed battled for third and Shaffer having his hands full with World of Outlaw point leader Joey Saldana and 2010 Lernerville track champion Danny Holtgraver. By lap 17, McMahan had reeled in Wolfe and the pair raced nose to tail which allowed Reed to close. At the half-way mark the huge crowd was on their feet as Wolfe, McMahan and Reed battled for the lead. A lap later and Reed would drive into second and on lap 22 was side-by-side with Wolfe for the top spot. Reed would execute a slide job in turn one on lap 23 to take the lead.

Meanwhile, McMahan and Blaney were locked in a heated battle for third, with Blaney taking the position on lap 24. Reed would catch the back of the field on lap 26, and Blaney would use that to his advantage to take second from Wolfe on lap 27. With 10 laps to go, Blaney caught Reed with Wolfe, McMahan, Holtgraver and Saldana giving chase. Blaney dove under Reed in turns one and two a lap later, with Reed catching the cushion and flipping.

Now in the lead and a clear track ahead, Blaney set sale following the red flag with McMahan, Wolfe, Holtgraver and Saldana giving chase. Holtgraver would take third on lap 33 moving Wolfe to fourth and Saldana to fifth. Blaney was on cruise control with McMahan comfortably in second but the war for third was a dandy between Holtgraver, Wolfe, Saldana and Shaffer. Saldana took third on lap 36 but could not catch Blaney and McMahan the last four laps. Shaffer and Holtgraver would round out the top five at the finish.

“It’s been an up and down season so far for us, so for us to come here and run the entire feature up front gives this team a lot of confidence,” said McMahan beside his Roth Motorsports, HR Cattle #83. “Dale and George are so tough on tracks like this and we just didn’t have anything for them tonight.”

Saldana was upset with his performance, especially in his heat when he spun on the last lap while running in a transfer position, forcing him to run the B-main and a 13th feature starting spot.
“My crew should have loaded it up and told me I was done after I screwed up like that in my heat. We expected a lot better run here tonight. It’s a good thing I’m not running for my dad or he would have fired me,” said Saldana beside his Kasey Kahne owned, Red Bull backed #9. “It’s just a very disappointing night because the driver made a horrible mistake.”

Fultz UMP Late Models – Jon Henry #15
At the drop of the green in the 25-lap late model feature, Curtis Roberts took the lead with Ken Hahn, Larry Kingseed, Dusty Moore and Ryan Missler right on his bumper. A quick caution after one lap and the exciting battle up front was back on as Hahn continuously ran to Roberts’ inside. Meanwhile, 9th starter Henry found something on the bottom of the track and vaulted into third by lap three. Following a caution for a stalled Ernie Haynes on lap four, Henry used the restart to drive under both Hahn and Roberts for the lead. Henry would pull away slightly while Hahn continued to battle Roberts, Kingseed and Moore for second. A caution on lap nine found the running order Henry, Hahn, Roberts, Kingseed and 14th starter Schlenk. As Henry was comfortably in the lead, a tremendous battle for second was being waged with Hahn, Schlenk, who moved into third on lap 13, Roberts and Kingseed.

Schlenk would drive under Hahn into the runner-up position on lap 14 but it appeared Henry’s lead was too big to make up. Meanwhile, Hahn, Roberts, Devin Schiels and Kingseed continued to put on a show for third. With five laps to go, fans began to notice Schlenk closing in on Henry while Hahn retired to the pits with mechanical woes, moving Roberts into third. As Henry raced to the flag stand with three laps remaining, Schlenk was no on his rear bumper. Schlenk tried a slider in turns one and two, but Henry dove back under to hold the lead as they raced to the white flag. Henry would move down to block Schlenk’s advance in turns one and two, but Schlenk was able to get a good run in turn three and pulled along side Henry as they blasted to the checkered. Henry would win by a nose with Schlenk, Roberts, Shiels and Moore rounding out the top five.

Fremont Fence 305 Sprints – Paul Weaver #82
In the 25-lap 305 sprint feature, Colvin would grab the early lead over rookie Seth Schneider, Weaver, Junior Felver and Jason Keckler. In a race that saw only two cautions, Weaver would move into second on lap 2 and Colvin would use the bottom groove to continuously hold off challenges from Weaver on the high side. Meanwhile, Felver raced comfortably in third while Nate Dussel had worked his way to fourth with Keckler, Schneider, Dustin Dinan and Josh Muntz in tow. Weaver would finally drive around Colvin into the lead on lap 13, but Colvin drove back under in turns one and two to regain the lead a lap later. Just as the pair hit lapped traffic, Weaver used his years of experience as he used a lapped machine as a pick to drive back around Colvin into the lead on lap 16…a lead he would not give up.

The caution flew on lap 17 with the running order Weaver, Colvin, Dussel, Felver, Keckler, Schneider, Dinan and 16th place starter Stuart Brubaker. With a clear track, Weaver was able to pull away slightly from Colvin while Dussel lost the third spot to Felver on lap 19. The final caution would fly on lap 20, giving Colvin one last shot at Weaver. Colvin would try a slide job in turn one on the restart, but Weaver dove back under to maintain the lead. Weaver would take the victory over Colvin, Felver, Dussel, and Brubaker.

2011 Spring Nationals Night 1 Rained Out

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Persistent rain showers has forced the cancellation of the first night of the HD Supply Spring Nationals at Attica Raceway Park for Friday, April 8. However, the first appearance of the 2011 season of the O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Cars at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” speedplant is still on for Saturday, April 9.

“It rained off and on Thursday night and most of the morning and there was no time for significant drying throughout the day. It’s unfortunate because we knew the fans were really looking forward to this event. But, we will do everything we can to get the racing in Saturday,” said Rex LeJeune, ARP’s director of operations.

Because of Friday’s rain-out, the Fultz Fabrications & Speed Shop UMP DIRTcar Late Models will now be included in Saturday’s racing card along with the All Star Sprints and Fremont Fence 305 Sprints. Pit gates will open at 3:30 p.m. with grandstands opening at 4 p.m. and racing underway at 7 p.m.

Besides the All Star drivers of Tim Shaffer, Greg Wilson, David Gravel, Cap Henry, Bill Rose, Dale Blaney and Attica’s weekly stars of Byron Reed, Craig Mintz, Phil Gressman, Dean Jacobs, Kevin Lee and more, it has been confirmed that Kasey Kahne Racing’s sprint teams of Joey Saldana, Brad Sweet, Cody Darrah and Paul McMahan will be competing Saturday.

2011 Spring Nationals Preview

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) The possibilities of who might show up to compete at the traditional HD Supply Spring Nationals at Attica Raceway Park on Friday and Saturday, April 8 and 9 has fans across the Midwest eagerly anticipating the event that will kick off the O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions’ Ohio Region.

Some of the drivers are a given, like two-time and defending All Star champion and winner of the 2010 Knoxville Nationals Tim Shaffer. The Steel City Outlaw already has a win with the All Stars at Ocala, Florida, and after his run at Attica’s season opener on April 1 – from 12th starting spot to a fourth place and closing finish – he certainly has to be considered the driver to beat. There’s also two time series’ champion Greg Wilson, who owns wins in the Spring Nationals in 2002, 2003 and 2006, and three-time All Star champion Dale Blaney, who has taken Spring National victories in 1995, 2007 and 2009. Add 2010 Ohio Sprint Speedweek champion David Gravel, who has started the season strong with several top five runs, including against the World of Outlaws, and 2010 All Star Rookie of the Year Cap Henry, and the excitement grows.

Then there’s the tough Attica weekly competitors including six-time track champion Byron Reed, who claimed two All Star wins at the track in 2010 and owns Spring Nationals victories in 2001 and last year. Add Dean Jacobs, who took the track’s opening night feature win, Phil Gressman, who ran consistent top fives against the All Stars in 2010, Craig Mintz, another top five competitor when the All Stars come to town, a veteran like Danny Smith (a 1996 and 2005 Spring Nationals winner) and young guns such as Kyle Sauder, Kevin Lee, Cole Duncan, Brandon Martin and Bryan Sebetto, and the recipe for an epic battle thickens.

And while the All Stars verses the Attica regulars is intriguing, throw in the likes of many-time Knoxville Raceway winner and Nationals victor and former World of Outlaws champion Danny “The Dude” Lasoski; young up-and-comer Mark Dobmeier; Tony Stewart Racing star Jessica Zemken; and Indiana rising star Miranda Throckmorton, who, in 2007 became the first woman to win a non-wing 410 sprint car feature in the country…wow!

But, the list isn’t complete. There’s the possibility of one of the hottest sprint car drivers in the country, former World of Outlaw champion and current All Star point leader Sammy Swindell, who swept the All Star events at Volusia in February and has already posted two World of Outlaw victories this season. Or maybe some Pennsylvania stars like Daryn Pittman, who sits second in the All Star points; Stevie Smith, who owns a win on the tough Central Pennsylvania circuit already in 2011 and is a 2005 Spring Nationals victor; Lance Dewease, also a Pennsylvania winner so far in 2011 and a 2008 Spring Nationals victor; many time Lernerville track champion Ed Lynch Jr.; and 2010 Lernerville titlist young charger Danny Holtgraver.

Then there are the “wild card” possibilities like many-time Knoxville Raceway track champion Terry “T-Mac” McCarl, a 2006 Attica Spring Nationals winner, and Sam Hafertepe Jr., who scored perhaps the biggest win of his young career recently by taking the ASCS Spring Nationals victory at Devil’s Bowl Speedway.

“This early in the season, a lot of teams want to get out and see how good they stack up and a two-day show like the HD Supply Spring Nationals gives them a tremendous opportunity,” said Rex LeJeune, Attica Raceway Park’s Director of Operations.

“The Spring Nationals has been one of the most exciting early season races in the country. You have a very strong contingent of local racers, our tough series’ drivers and then you throw in some surprise competitors and it is a ‘must see’ event,” added Guy Webb, President/CEO of the All Stars.

Competing with the All Star sprints on Friday night will be the Fultz Fabrications and Speed Shop UMP Late Models. Pit gates will open at 4 p.m. with grandstands opening to fans at 5 p.m. and racing underway at 7:45 p.m.

The Fremont Fence 305 Sprints will join the All Stars on Saturday night’s racing card (the late models also if Friday night’s show is rained out). Pit gates will open at 3:30 p.m. with grandstands opening at 4 p.m. and racing underway at 7 p.m.
