By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) There’s a lot on the line the last three weeks of the 2009 racing season at Attica Raceway Park. The point battles in all four divisions are tight, as is the chase for the Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title (FAST) as “Ohio’s Finest Racing” speedplant closes the summer with three weeks of Saturday night racing.
Gates will open each of the last three Saturday night races at 4:30 p.m. with racing underway at 7:30 p.m.
After a week off for the Attica Fair, the action resumes on the one-third mile oval on Saturday, Aug. 22 on WNWO NBC Toledo 24/Aaron’s Sales and Lease Night with the 410 sprints, Fultz Fabrications and Speed Shop UMP Late Models, Fremont Fence 305 Sprints and dirt trucks on the racing card.
The coveted Attica Raceway Park track championships will come down to the Kistler Racing Products Season Championship Night on Saturday, Aug. 29. It will be a double point night for all four divisions as well as being the next to last FAST point night.
The season ends in a big way on Saturday, Sept. 5, as the O’Reilly All Star Circuit of Champion Sprint Cars come to town for the Attica Ambush on Baumann Auto Group Night. The UMP late models and dirt trucks join the action.
Five-time and defending 410 sprint champion Byron Reed holds a slim 27-point advantage over charger Chris Andrews who has three wins at Attica in 2009. Mike Linder, who claimed his first win of 2009 last week at Fremont Speedway, is just 38 points back in third. Mark Keegan, a 12-time Attica champion isn’t out of the running yet, as he sits fourth just 52 points back. Current FAST point leader Craig Mintz rounds out the top five with his two feature wins in 2009.
In the UMP late models, Ryan Missler’s three feature wins has him sitting atop the point standings, but by just 41 points over Dusty Moore. Wayne Maffett Jr. sits third, just 76 points out thanks to a feature victory, while former limited late model track champion Ken Hahn and Mike Bores round out the top five.
Paul Weaver’s three feature wins gives him a 33-point advantage over defending track champion Stuart Brubaker in the 305 sprint title chase. Brubaker has two victories at Attica in 2009. Steve Rando sits third, just 81 points back, while Nate Dussel who has a feature victory, and Bobby Clark, who has chalked up two wins, round out the top five.
The ageless wonder, Art Ball, 70, sits atop the dirt truck points. Ball, who has four feature wins at Attica in 2009, was the track champion in 2006 and 2007 and has two limited late model championships as well. Alex Weichman sits just 67 points back, while Dan Hennig and Dwight Waltermeier, who each have a feature win, are just 80 and 84 points back respectively. Rounding out the top five is Brian Arnold who is just 87 points out of first.
