Chris Andrews Opens Ohio Speedweek With First Career UNOH All Star Win; Schlenk Earns Late Model Victory at Attica

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) There’s just something about Attica Raceway Park and Ohio Sprint Speedweek that brings out the best in racers.

Last year it was Danny Holtgraver who scored his first career University of Northwestern Ohio All Star Circuit of Champions win at Attica to open speedweek. This year, Sandusky, Ohio’s Chris Andrews earned the biggest win of his career, holding off three time UNOH All Star champion Dale Blaney to score his first ever series win to begin the 31st Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek.

Andrews, the 2009 Attica champion, has struggled somewhat this year, but with four laps to go, he kept his composure on a restart and went on to score his four career win at Attica.

“It felt like I drove to California and back that’s how long that race felt like. Especially that last lap…I just wanted to get that over with,” said Andrews beside his Burmeister Racing/K&N Filters/Lucas Oil/Schiets Motorsports/Kistler Racing Products/Adkins Sanitation backed machine.

“The car was good and the track wasn’t looking too good earlier today but they really did a good job smoothing it out and making it racy. Hats off to my guys…we haven’t been running too well this season. Paul Kistler has given us awesome motors and Mikey (Sommers) spinning the wrenches and Sonny and Sharon Burmeister…I can’t thank them enough for the ride,” added Andrews.

“I knew I was in his (Blaney’s) territory and as long as I stayed there I knew I minimized my chances of him passing me. Dale’s the best on the bottom and I was just trying to hit my marks,” concluded Andrews in the Engine Pro Victory Lane.

For Blaney, he was catching Andrews in the middle of the race, but just couldn’t get there as cautions interrupted his momentum. Then he was locked in a great battle with Tim Shaffer at the end of the race for second.

“In open traffic he (Andrews) was a little better than we were. I felt I was as good and getting better there in the middle of the race. I felt like I was maybe gaining a little bit on him. But, he ran a good race and never made a mistake. I was hoping to get to traffic and never did. It was all I could do to hang on to second. I know Shaffer was there and it was a good race,” said Blaney beside his Ti22 Performance/GF1 Chassis #2.

Caleb Griffith would come on strong at the end of the race to score a third place finish.

“I really have to give it to my crew. We timed in sixth which is really good for us and then the driver went out and laid an egg in the heat race so we had to come back from adversity all night. Had to come out of the B and blew a brake line in the B…it was just a thrash. To come from where we were to run third is a great night for us,” said Griffith beside his Al Davis Carpet/McDonald’s Restaurant/Young’s Batter Mix/Crown Battery #40DD.

In the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Models, McClure, Ohio’s Rusty Schlenk held off Matt Miller following a restart with three laps to go, to claim his second Attica win of the season. It is the 16th of his career at Attica.

“I was too tight to run around the top. Thank goodness I was able to use the high side to get around lapped traffic. I had to stick to the bottom once I got into the clear,” said Schlenk about his Lazer Chassis/Micro-Armor Lubricants/Main & Company/Zeller Automotive backed #91. “He (Miller) is definitely one of the people I hate having behind me on a restart because he is so good on the starts. I expected him to try and roll me on the top…he usually does. I guess I kept my momentum up enough to keep him back there. I was peaking over my shoulder coming to the checkers.”

“We just got this new car out. I’m glad it’s working. We have the Summer Nationals coming here and I’d like to win that thing. Every time we race in that I end up breaking something. I have to thank my crew. We completely destroyed the front of the car and had to put it all back together and if it wasn’t for them guys we wouldn’t have made it out there for the feature,” added Schlenk.

UNOH All Star Sprints – Chris Andrews #16
D.J. Foos and Andrews would bring the field to the green for the 40 lap feature, but it was defending track champion Craig Mintz who shot into the lead from his fourth starting spot. Mintz began to pull away slightly as Andrews, Foos, Blaney, Shaffer and Stuart Williams gave chase.

Brad Sweet would coast to a stop on lap four to bring out the yellow flag and when the green flew again Blaney snuck under Foos for third. Foos would spin in turn four on lap six and on the ensuing restart, Andrews drove to Mintz’ outside to challenge with Blaney, Shaffer, Williams and Rob Chaney in tow.

Just as Mintz was set to hit heavy lapped traffic on lap 13, something broke in the front of his car and he stopped exiting turn four, handing the lead to Andrews. A lap and a caution for Brad Bowman who suffered a flat tire. The restart running order was Andrews, Blaney, Shaffer, Brand Martin (up from 15th), Chaney, Greg Wilson, Williams and Griffith.

Cap Henry would spin on lap 17 with the running order Andrews, Blaney, Shaffer, Martin, Chaney and Wilson. The running order stayed that way until Caleb Helms spun on lap 24. On the ensuing restart Bryan Sebetto smacked the fourth turn fence, bringing out another caution which led to a red flag fuel stop. The restart running order was Andrews, Blaney, Shaffer, Martin, Wilson and Griffith. Wilson and Griffith would get around Martin on lap 28.

Sheldon Haudenschild would spin on lap 29 just as Blaney and Shaffer were inching closer to Andrews. On the restart Andrews would pull away slightly while Blaney and Shaffer battled hard for second while Griffith moved into fourth as Martin drove back by Wilson for fifth. Someone clipped one of the infield tires on lap 36, necessitating another caution.

That gave Blaney and Shaffer one last shot at Andrews. On the restart Andrews stuck to his bottom grove as Brandon Martin executed a bonsai move and nearly took out Shaffer and Griffith. Griffith moved into third with Martin, Dean Jacobs and Shaffer regrouping.

Andrews would hit his marks perfectly the last four laps to take the win. Blaney, Griffith, Martin and Jacobs would round out the top five.

Mike Bores and Brandon Thirlby would bring the late model field to the green for their 25-lap feature with Bores taking the lead. Schlenk, who started 7th, quickly moved into second and immediately challenged Bores by just the second lap with Thirlby, 11th starter Brad Malcuit and Miller in tow. Schlenk would drive under Bores for the top spot on lap three with Miller charging into third. Josh Haynes would spin to bring the action to a halt.

On the ensuing restart Schlenk pulled away as Bores had to battle with Miller while Malcuit moved into fourth over Thirlby, Matt Irey, John Mayes Jr. and Ryan Missler. As Schlenk drove into lapped traffic on lap 10, Miller, who took second on lap five, began to close as Malcuit drove into third, bringing Thirlby to fourth and Bores back to fifth. The car on the move was last week’s feature winner Cody Scott who had drive from his 20th starting spot – last – to 9th.

Schlenk hit heavy lapped traffic with nine laps to go and Miller closed as Malcuit ran comfortably in third. John Bores would spin on lap 21, giving Schlenk a clear track. But, after a lap was recorded Tim Sabo would stop in turn four to bunch up the field once again. When the green reappeared, Miller really pressured Schlenk as they pulled away from Malcuit, Thirlby, Scott and Mike Bores.

As they raced out of turn four for the checkered, Miller dove to Schlenk’s inside and lost by half a car length at the start-finish line. Malcuit, Thirlby and Scott would round out the top five.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, July 5 for Kear’s Speed Shop Fan Appreciation Night. General admission is just $10 for adults with the 410 sprints, 305 sprints, late models and dirt trucks in action.

2013 Ohio Sprint Speedweek Preview

By Brian Liskai – UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions PR (Camargo, IL) Ohio Sprint Speedweek usually determines who will wear the University of Northwestern Ohio All Star Circuit of Champions’ crown at season’s end. This year, the 31st Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek features eight racing events over nine days at seven different race tracks in the Buckeye State.

It all kicks off Friday, June 21 as Kistler Engines Presents the Ohio Sprint Speedweek on TPC Food Services/Ohio Cat Night at Attica Raceway Park . This will mark the 99th UNOH All Star show at Attica . Earlier this year current All Star point leader Dale Blaney, a four time Ohio Sprint Speedweek champion, took the victory at Attica . Blaney now has 13 series wins at Attica and has 95 total All Star victories for his career, just three behind tying Kenny Jacobs for the series all-time feature wins.

Last year at Attica’s speedweek event, Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ’s Danny Holtgraver scored his first career UNOH All Star victory. Race-long leader Cap Henry spun trying to avoid a flipping car with just four laps remaining. Currently Holtgraver, who has scored four sprint feature wins in non-All Star racing this season, sits fourth in the series’ national points and second in the Ohio Region standings. Henry, who has two non-sanctioned sprint car wins in 2013, is third in the UNOH All Star national points and fifth in the Ohio Region.

There is a little extra incentive at Attica as the top two finishers in the feature event that are running Kistler Engines will receive $500 from the engine builder.

The All Star drivers always have their hands full with the Attica regulars like six time track champion Byron Reed, who is coming off a weekend sweep at Attica and Fremont Speedway. Defending track champion Craig Mintz has run consistently in the top five every week at Attica. Throw in Caleb Griffith, who scored the win at the track in the 360/305 sprint challenge, Bryan Sebetto, who has an All Star win at Fremont this season and a non-sanctioned win at Attica, currently sits fourth in the series’ Ohio Region points, rookie D.J. Foos, Brian Smith who has a win at the track, and a host of others and you have a recipe for excitement. Holtgraver has a non-sanctioned win at Attica in 2013 as does Shane Stewart. And former track champion Dean Jacobs is expected to be behind the wheel of a new ride for speedweek.

The UMP Late models will also be in competition at Attica . Gates will open at 4 p.m. with racing underway at 7:45 p.m. Tickets are $22 for adults; $20 for seniors; $10 for teens ages 11-15; with kids 10 and under getting in free. Pit passes are $30.

For more information go to www.atticaracewaypark.com.

Night #2 will be at Tony Stewart’s Eldora Speedway. No other track in the country has hosted more of the series’ races than Eldora. The Speedweek event will be the 132nd of the UNOH All Stars at the famous half-mile. The last time the UNOH All Stars visited “The Big E,” in 2011, Blaney took the victory, the sixth series’ win at the track of his career.

The UMP DIRTcar Modifieds and Eldora Stocks will also be in competition for the June 22 event. Tickets will go on sale at 3:30 with gates opening at 4 p.m. and racing getting underway at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 for those ages 13 and older; $4 for ages 12 and under with pit passes at $25.

On Sunday, June 23, Speedweek moves to Waynesfield Raceway Park near Lima , Ohio . The one-third mile bullring has produced some of the most exciting speedweek shows in recent years. Last year, for the second night in a row, Henry looked headed to victory, but Stevie Smith passed him with eight laps to go to score the victory, the 200th sprint car win of Smith’s career. The win, coupled with consistent runs throughout speedweek would propel Smith to his second Ohio Sprint Speedweek championship.

Ohio Logistics Presents the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions Ohio Sprint Speedweek at “The Field” with pit gates opening at 4 p.m. with grandstand gates open at 5 p.m. and racing underway at 7 p.m. Go to www.waynesfieldmotorsportspark.com for more information.

The NAPA Wayne County Speedway near Orrville , Ohio will host the UNOH All Stars on Monday, June 24. The track was one of the original speedweek destinations when the concept began 31 years ago. Last year, phenom Kyle Larson passed Blaney on lap 13 and went on to score his second straight speedweek feature, having won the night before at Cannonball Speedway.

This year’s Duffy Smith Memorial – run in honor of the former racer who passed away following the speedweek show in 2012 – will also include the Lias Tire Late Models for a $2,000 to win feature. Gates will open at 3 p.m. with racing at 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday finds the UNOH All Stars at Sharon Speedway near Hartford , Ohio . Another of the tracks that was part of the first Ohio Sprint Speedweek 31 years ago, the 3/8th mile oval was the scene of a marathon race last year. Tire wear was the culprit and it was young Brandon Matus who nursed his tires enough to score his first career UNOH All Star victory.

Gates will open at Sharon at 4 p.m. The Econ-Mods and Mini Stocks will also be in competition. Tickets are $22 for adults with kids 13 and under getting in free. Pit passes are $35.

For more information go to www.sharonspeedway.com

Wednesday, June 26 is an off day before Ohio Sprint Speedweek blasts into the weekend beginning Thursday, June 27 at Fremont Speedway. This will mark the 108th visit of the UNOH All Stars at “The Track That Action Built,” located in the Sandusky County Fairgrounds. Earlier this year Sebetto and Blaney posted All Star wins at Fremont . Blaney has the most series’ wins at the track with 12 and swept both speedweek events at Fremont last year.

Fremont is another track the All Stars have to battle with a tough contingent of weekly drivers. Reed won this past week and is a three time track champion. Former All Star champion Greg Wilson has a pair of victories at Fremont in 2013. Tim Shaffer, who has won the last four All Star championships, also has a win in non-sanctioned racing at the track this season. Shaffer, the 2011 Ohio Sprint Speedweek champion, has eight career series’ wins at Fremont . Henry posted a non-sanctioned win at Fremont this season and Griffith also picked up a weekly feature win.

The 305 sprints and dirt trucks will also be in competition on DB3 Imaging Night.

Gates will open at 4 p.m. with racing underway at 7 p.m. Go to www.fremontohspeedway.com for more information.

On Friday, June 28th Ohio Sprint Speedweek heads to the high banked quarter-mile of Limaland Motorsports Park , presented by Elwer Fence. Last year’s event fell victim to rain as heavy thunderstorms hit the area. In 2011 Kyle Sauder would score his first ever All Star win during the Lima speedweek event. In 2010 David Gravel earned his first ever All Star win at Lima during speedweek as he claimed the Ohio Speedweek championship that year.

The track’s tough weekly 360 race teams will also give the All Stars a great challenge.

The K&N Modifieds will also be in competition.

Pit gates will open at 4 p.m. with spectator gates open at 5 p.m. and racing underway at 7:30 p.m.

Go to www.limaland.com for more information.

The 31st Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek wraps up Saturday, June 29th at Fremont Speedway for the $10,000-to-win finale on Ludwig Propane Night. There is a rain date of Sunday, June 30th if needed.

Also during each speedweek event, drivers will go through the stands collecting donations for Jason Leffler’s five-year-old son Charlie. Leffler, a versatile driver who won championships in USAC and competed in each of NASCAR’s three national series, died last Wednesday after a crash in a 410 sprint car at a track in New Jersey.

Ohio Speedweek always draws in the best talent from the Midwest, western Pennsylvania , along with the All Star regulars and usually a few surprises. In seasons past NASCAR Sprint Cup stars Tony Stewart and Kasey Kahne competed at several speedweek events. Larson may pop in for a few races as well.

As in the past, speedweek could also produce some first time winners with young drivers like Caleb Helms, Justin Henderson, Trey Gustin and more looking to put their names in the record books.

Reed Breaks Into Attica Victory Lane; Scott Nabs First Late Model Win; Dussel Again In 305 Sprints; Ivy Earns Truck Victory

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Byron Reed has been around sprint car racing long enough to know sometimes all you need is one good run to boost your confidence. The Monclova, Ohio driver started the year a little slow, but over the past month the team has picked up the pace and it paid off at Attica Raceway Park Friday as he took his first win of the season on Burns Electric/Ohio Logistics Mid-Season Championship Night.

Reed, a six-time Attica track champion in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 Sprints, dueled with Travis Philo the first half of the race before taking the lead. He then survived a late race restart and held off Craig Mintz for his 29th career win at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” speedplant.

“We came into the season with a new tire package and we changed a lot of what we do. We over thought and made too many changes. We got down on ourselves and it snowballed. We went back to the basics and it’s paying off. We got a lot of help from Maxim Chassis and my confidence is a lot better,” said Reed beside his Crown Battery/Reebar Diecasting backed #5. “Speedweek starts next week and I’m excited. We’re going to run most of the shows and I think we can get on a roll.”

With double points on the line, Ontario, Ohio’s Cody Scott new he had to have a good run in the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Models if he wants to unseat four time track champion Ryan Missler. Scott did just that, passing Missler with eight laps to go to take the lead and then held off Missler on a late race restart to claim his first ever feature win.

“Those yellows flags were terrible. I didn’t know if I had enough to hold off Missler and I saw Dusty (Moore) came up so I was just hoping I could hang on,” said Scott beside his Fultz Fabrications and Speed Shop/Bubba’s Crap & Scrap/M.R. Trucking/Innovative Graphics backed #92. “I’ve had a lot of help from Keith Berner and my parents…if it weren’t for them this would never have happened. This is my first real full season running. Being in high school I didn’t run too much and last year we had a blown engine at the start of the season. I want to thank Bernie…he comes over all the time to help, This is awesome…a dream come true.”

Bradner, Ohio’s Nate Dussel is having a dream season and it continued in the Foster’s Auto Body 305 Sprints as he passed Dustin Dinan on the white flag lap and went on to score his third win of the year at Attica. It is the 7th total win for Dussel in 2013 as he has four at Fremont Speedway. He now has 8 career wins at Attica.

“He (Dinan) drove a great race. I just kind of snuck up on him late and used lapped traffic. I could probably run the bottom as good as he could but I wasn’t going to pass him down there. I tried in one and two but was about spinning out so I just followed him in one and two and built momentum in three and four. This is a dream season and it’s because of all the hard work these guys put in to build an awesome program,” said Dussel beside his Berrier Fabrications/Dussel Welding/Kylynn Manufacturing/Gressman Powersports/Conrad Transport backed #1.

Fremont, Ohio’s John Ivy has five dirt trucks wins at Fremont Speedway in 2013 to go with a pair of 305 sprint wins there. Ivy added to his season win total by driving from his 12th starting spot into the lead on lap 11 and driving to his first truck win at Attica. It was the second career dirt truck win at Attica for Ivy, who is a former 305 and 410 sprint champion at the track.

“I’m glad I made it through that crash. I hit pretty hard there,” said Ivy of his Diversified Machine & Welding/Sonny’s Machine Shop/Level Performance backed #00. “This thing has been good all year and a lot of fun. I went forward in both the 305 and truck tonight…that’s all I can ask for.”

FAST Series 410 Sprints – Byron Reed #5R
Brian Smith and Travis Phil would bring the 410 sprint field to the green for the 30 laps feature with Philo blasting to the lead while fourth starter Reed would slide into second with Smith, D.J. Foos, Caleb Griffith and Stuart Brubaker in tow. Foos would take third on lap three as Reed closed on Philo. With six laps in, Foos moved in to challenge the top two while Griffith ran third followed by Smith and 10th starter Craig Mintz.

As they raced to the line to complete the 7th circuit, Foos tried to make it a three car battle for the lead but his car hooked up tight and he tumbled exiting turn four. On the ensuing restart Chris Andrews would get upside down. When the green reappeared, Philo slammed the door on Reed’s repeated attempts to take the lead before the caution flew on lap 10 for debris. On the restart Reed once again hounded Philo with Griffith locked in a tight battle with Mintz for third while Smith gave chase. Philo and Reed would race side by side from lap 10 through lap 18 as Mintz closed to make it a three car battle.

Reed would drive under Phil for the lead on lap 18 with Mintz taking second a lap later. When Reed caught the rear of the field with 10 laps to go, Mintz quickly closed as Phil rebounded to challenge. As they raced through lapped traffic, Griffith and 15th starter Brandon Martin would join the fun at the front. The caution would fly for Brandon Wimmer on lap 23 and when the green came back out Mintz drove back around Philo for second and closed quickly on Reed.

As the laps ticked off Reed would regain his momentum and pulled away for the win over Mintz, Griffith, Philo and Martin.

Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Models – Cody Scott #92
Tim Sabo and John Mayes Jr. would lead the late model field to the green for their 25 laps feature with Sabo gaining the advantage over Dave Hornikel, Ryan Missler, Ken Hahn and Mayes. Missler would take second on lap three just as the caution flew for a tangle involving Matt Irey and Jeff McCoy. On the restart Missler would drive around Sabo for the lead while Hahn moved into third with Scott, who started seventh, taking fourth.

The caution would fly again on lap five for Ryan Eddleblute with the running order Missler, Sabo, Scott, Hahn and Devin Shiels. When the green flew, Missler pulled away from a terrific battle for second between Sabo, Scot and Hahn. With 10 laps in, the car on the move was Mike Bores who started 17th and had moved into fifth. Meanwhile Missler had built a five second lead as Scott took second on lap 12. A caution for debris on lap 13 wiped out Missler’s huge advantage. On the restart Scott immediately pressured Missler for the lead as the two raced side by side until another caution debris on lap 17.

On the ensuing restart Scott would drive under Missler to take the lead with Sabo and a charging Dusty Moore in pursuit. Missler kept driving to Scott’s outside, but the second generation driver would not lose his cool and stayed glued to the bottom groove. When Chris Keller drove off the track on lap 21 to bring out the caution, Missler had one more shot at Scott. When the green waved Scott didn’t panic when Missler blasted to his outside. Meanwhile Irey, who was involved in the early race skirmish, had worked his way to fourth and would take third on lap 23.

Scott would drive to the win over Missler, Irey, Moore and Bores.

Foster Auto Body 305 Sprints – Nate Dussel #1
Two-time feature winner Dustin Dinan and Jimmy Colvin brought the 305 sprints to the green for their 25-lap feature with Dinan using the low groove to power into the lead. Fourth starter Bobby Clark would blast into second with sixth starter Dussel grabbing third over Colvin, T.J. Michael and Ivy. Dussel would take second on lap three while Clark and Ivy battled for third. Ivy would take third on lap five.

As Dinan began to close in on the rear of the field, Dussel quickly narrowed the gap with Ivy also making up ground. Dinan raced into traffic on lap 11 and Dussel was there to challenge for the lead. Dan Hammond would spin on lap 12 to give Dinan a clear track. On the restart Hammond would spin again. When the green reappeared, Dinan pulled away from Dussel with Ivy, Clark, Michael, Colvin and Seth Schneider in pursuit. Ivy would pressure Dussel for second as they tried to stay close to Dinan.

With five laps to go, Dinan was closing in on lapped traffic and again his lead would evaporate as Dussel and Ivy closed. Dinan and Dussel raced side by side over the next couple of laps and as they exited turn four with the white flag in the air, Dussel drove to the lead.

Dussel would take the win over Dinan, Ivy, Michael and Clark.

Bob’s Machine Shop Dirt Trucks – John Ivy #00
Brian Sorg and Art Ball paced the Bob’s Machine Shop/BMS Engines Dirt Trucks for their 15 lap feature. Sorg would grab the lead over Ball as Tony Siferd, Dwight Waltermeier gave chase. The caution flew on lap two for a Siferd and Andy Keegan dust up. On the restart Dustin Keegan would drive into second and closed on Sorg as the caution flew on lap four for Jeff Warnick. When the green reappeared Keegan bolted to Sorg’s outside to grab the lead. Meanwhile Ivy had worked his way from 12th to sixth.

When the green came back out Keegan lead Sorg as Ivy blasted into third over Ball, Daniel Roepke and Waltermeier. Ivy drove into second on lap eight and quickly closed on Keegan. Ivy would take the lead with a low move on lap 11 as Keegan had his hands full with Roepke.

Ivy would drive away fro the win over Keegan, Roepke, Sorg and Ball.
