Philo Earns 2nd Career Attica 410 Sprint Win; Schlenk Dominates Late Models; Dinan Gets 3rd 305 Sprint Win; Ivy Takes 3rd Truck Victory

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Travis Philo scored his first career 410 sprint win at Attica Raceway Park last season. He started on the front row that night…he felt he didn’t really earn that win though he held off a veteran racer on a late race restart.

This Friday the Waterville, Ohio driver charged from his third starting spot to take the lead on lap 16 and then traded sliders with defending track champion Craig Mintz late before driving to the win on Smith Family Foods Night. Philo became the 10th different driver to win in 10 A-mains at Attica Raceway Park in the O”Reilly Auto Parts 410 Sprints this season.

“I was good on the top down here (turns three and four) but Craig showed his nose. He could have taken me out if he wanted to…he’s a class act. The bottom of one and two is where I passed all my cars…I felt real good down there,” said Philo beside his Control Design Solutions/Kistler Racing Products/Banshee Graphics backed machine.

“Last win I started on the front row. Tonight I passed some cars so that was pretty cool. I have to thank my Uncle Dave and Control Design Solutions, Dave and Kyle at Kistler Racing Products, Paul Kistler did a hell of a job. We had to get a motor freshened and he turned it around in a week. I have to thank my Dad and Mom, my grandpa and grandma, Bryan Darling and Gary Bowe,” added Philo.

Mintz would come home second to pad his lead in the $10,000-to-win Kistler Racing Products FAST (Fremont Attica Sprint Title) Championship Series with just a handful of FAST point races remaining at both tracks.

In a caution-free 25-lap late model feature, Rusty Schlenk dominated. At times he had built a five second lead. He had one close call late in the race when a lapped car drove up in front of him and made contact, pushing a bar into his tire. But, the McClure driver nursed his machine home for the fourth win of the season at Attica and the eighth overall of 2013. Schlenk now has 18 career wins at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” speedplant.

“A lapped car changed directions on me in the middle of the straight-away…he went high and I thought he was staying low. I tried missing him but ended up getting into him and it pushed my t-bar down into my tire. I could see it smoking and smell it the whole last part of the race so I backed myself down to make sure I wasn’t pushing it too hard. I’d hate to lose it with a flat tire,” said Schlenk beside his Kercher Engines/Micro-Armor Lubricants/Main and Company/Zeller Automotive/Landrum springs backed #91. “I have to thank all the guys that stuck with me this week…it’s been very busy week with the Hell Tour ending.”

In the Foster Auto Body 305 Sprints, Fremont, Ohio’s Dustin Dinan nipped John Ivy by a bumper to the start-finish line on lap 16 with the caution flying soon after, leaving him in the lead. He then had to fend off Ivy on a restart with just one lap to go to score his third win of the season, also the third of his career at Attica. Dinan now has five wins overall as he has two victories at Fremont this year.

With his second place run Ivy cuts into Nate Dussel’s lead in the JLH General Contractors FAST 305 Championship Series lead with just three races remaining in that point battle.

“I got a little hurt at work the other day but this makes it feel better. I didn’t want to go to the doctor because they’d probably tell me I couldn’t race,” said Dinan beside his Tank’s Meats/Quality Welding/Hillside Pawnshop/Quaintance Farms/Alley Tap Room/Johnson’s Hunting and Fishing/Schiets Tender Touch Car Wash backed #6.

“I knew John would be outside on that restart so I kind of run it up there and block my spot. I have to thank my crew…Dave Foos, Jamie Adams, Aaron Fought, Tom Losher, A.J. Sleek…these guys are awesome. I have to thank Rich Farmer and Shelly Liskai, my girlfriend Rachel and my baby girl Skylar and all my sponsors,” added Dinan.

In the 15-lap Bob’s Machine Shop Dirt Truck feature, John Ivy steadily worked his way to the front after starting 12th, and then blasted from third into the lead on lap 7 and drove away to his third win of the season at Attica in a feature that had only one caution – that for debris. Ivy has 6 truck wins at Fremont in 2013. It was his fourth career truck win at Attica. Prior to the feature, the team was going to replace Ivy with Dan Roepke Jr. who suffered mechanical problems in his heat in his truck as he came into the night leading the track points. But, track rules prohibited the move since there was no B-main for Roepke to race Ivy’s truck in prior to the feature.

“The track kind of made up our minds on that. Charlie and Craig have this thing good. We had to start 12th…I told the guys we’ve done it before we’d be alright,” said Ivy beside his Diversified Machine and Welding/Level Performance/Perkins Tree Service/Sonny’s Machine backed #00. “The guys have been working on this thing real hard and it’s been staying together. I tore it up once or twice and they told me they will have to work on it tomorrow. But this thing has been real, real good.”

FAST 410 Sprints – Travis Philo #5T
Paige Polyak and Caleb Griffith would bring the 410 sprint field to the green for their 30-lap affair but before a lap could be completed Scott Euler would spin. On the restart Polyak would blast into the lead over Griffith, Philo, D.J. Foos, Stuart Brubaker, Craig Mintz and Brian Smith. The caution would fly on lap three for a Jody Keegan spin with Polyak leading Griffith, Philo, a charging Mintz, Foos, Brubaker, Cole Duncan and 13th starting Brian Lay.

With seven laps in Polyak continued to lead as Griffith had his hands full with Philo and Mintz. Just as Griffith was closing on Polyak, she would slip over the cushion in turns three and four on lap 11, handing the lead to Griffith with Philo, Mintz and Foos in pursuit. The leaders would hit heavy lapped traffic on lap 14 but the caution would fly for a Christopher Bell spin just as Griffith, Philo and Mintz were ready to put on a great battle for the lead.

A lap after the restart Phil would drive under Griffith for the lead as Mintz now pressured for second with Foos and Brubaker completing the top five. Mintz would finally steal second on lap 22 as the lead group prepared to encounter heavy lapped traffic again. On lap 24, racing into traffic that was battling side-by-side, Mintz executed a slider in turns three and four to steal the lead, but Philo duplicated the act in turns one and two to regain the top spot.

Phil and Mintz continued to battle with Griffith, Foos and Brubaker in tow. But, Griffith would spin in turn four on lap 28, ending his great run. On the restart with just two laps to go, Philo dove to the bottom of one and two as Mintz tried to race to his outside. Philo would drift up the track exiting turn two to block Mintz’ momentum. Phil would drive to the win over Mintz, Foos, Brubaker and Polyak.

Summit Racing Equipment Late Models – Rusty Schlenk #91
In the non-stop 25-lap Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Model feature, Rusty Schlenk and Mike Bores would bring the field to the green. Schlenk served notice he was the car to beat as he pulled away while third place starter John Mayes Jr. jumped into second over Bores, Cody Scott, Ky Harper, Matt Irey and Ryan Missler. Scott would take third on lap two with Harper taking the position a lap later.

Schlenk would build up to a five second lead as the action on back was fantastic with Mayes, Harper, Scott and Missler. Harper would move into second on lap eight as the leader raced into traffic. Mayes would surrender third to Scott on lap 10 and closed on Harper. With 10 laps to go, Schlenk was in heavy lapped traffic and his lead began to shrink as Harper and Scott closed with Missler moving into fourth.

Schlenk’s encounter with the lapped car that caused front end damage to his mount occurred on lap 16 as Harper, Scott and Missler chopped three seconds off his lead. But Schlenk was able to clear traffic and set his cruise control back on high as he drove away to the win with Harper, Scott, Missler and Wayne Maffett Jr. rounding out the top five.

FAST 305 Sprints – Dustin Dinan #6
Bobby Clark and T.J. Michael would bring the field to the green in the 305 sprint main, but something happened to Clark as his car came to a stop coming to the start, nearly causing a massive pile-up. That would move Dan Hammond to the point with Michael and when the green flew again, Michael would bolt into the lead over Hammond, John Ivy, Dinan and Ricky Peterson.

Ivy would take second on lap two and would dive under Michael for the lead a circuit later with Dinan moving into third. With five laps in the running order was Ivy, Dinan, Michael. Alvin Roepke, Peterson and Hammond. Ivy would hit lapped traffic by lap nine, with Dinan closing while Michael, Roepke, Jason Keckler, Peterson and Paul Weaver in pursuit.

By lap 11 the leaders were in heavy lapped traffic, with Ivy making some great moves as Dinan stayed close. As they drove to the line on lap 16, Dinan raced under Ivy and held the lead by a nose as the caution would soon fly for a Jeremy Duposki spin. Since the leaders had crossed the line, the split-caution rule applied and the lap counted with Dinan now in the lead over Ivy, Roepke and Keckler.

When the green flew, Ivy drove to Dinan’s outside. But the caution would fly again on lap 18 for a Hammond spin. Again on the restart Ivy would pressure Dinan to his outside, but once he exited turn two, Dinan regained his momentum and pulled away slightly as Michael, Roepke, Keckler, Jordan Ryan and Paul Weaver gave chase. Ryan would move into fourth by lap 23.

After the leaders took the white flag, Tyler Gunn would spin in turn four necessitating a one lap battle to the finish. Dinan was able to hold off Ivy on the restart and take the win. Michael would come home third with Ryan and Weaver rounding out the top five.

Bob’s Machine Shop Dirt Trucks – John IVy #00
Tony Siferd and Eric Devanna brought the field to the green in the 15-lap truck feature, but before a lap could be completed Roger Inks would spin. On the complete restart Siferd jumped into the lead over Brian Melnek, Devanna and Brian Arnold. Seventh place starter Dustin Keegan would blast into third by lap two and would take second on the next circuit. The truck on the move was 12th starter Ivy who was sixth by lap three and moved into the top five a circuit latter.

With six laps in the battle for the lead was intense between Siferd, Keegan, Ivy and Melnek. Ivy drove around Keegan and Siferd into the lea don lap seven. The only caution would fly on lap eight after one of the infield tractor tires was pushed into the racing groove. The running order was Ivy, Siferd, Keegan, Melnek, Kent Brewer and Kyle Cline.

On the restart Keegan would grab second, but Ivy was starting to stretch his lead. Ivy would drive away to the win over Keegan, Siferd, Brewer and Melnek.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, Aug. 2 for Edward Jones of Clyde/Mike Neill financial Advisor Night with all four divisions in action. For more information go to www.atticaracewaypark.com

Drown Wins Thriller Summer Nationals Late Model Event at Attica; Lay Earns First Sprint Car Win; Morehouse Gets Summit Modified Nationals Win

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Doug Drown and his Weekly Racing team almost didn’t race at Attica Raceway Park Friday night. But a last minute decision paid off as the Wooster, Ohio driver battled with Brandon Sheppard and Bobby Pierce the entire 40 laps before taking the $5,000 victory for race #25 of the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Hell Tour.

While the score card will say he led all 40 laps on Central Ohio Farmers/Summit Racing Equipment Night, Drown, Sheppard and Pierce raced side by side by side nearly the entire distance. In fact, Sheppard, who leads the Summer Nationals points, executed a slider for the lead as they exited turn four to complete lap 38, but the caution flew, keeping Drown at the point. Drown showed his savvy on the restart, diamonding off the fourth corner and swooping in front of Sheppard, breaking his momentum and then diving down to the bottom of turns one and two to block as “The Hammer” drove to his fifth career win at Attica

“Every time I was looking out the corner of my eye I saw Bobby (Pierce) and I looked at the scoreboard and saw he was third and I was like ‘oh man he must be on my butt.’ And then when he dove in there…I don’t know how many laps, I was trying to count, but I just had to hit my marks. The Weekly Electric, Efco Power Equipment, Wooster Glass, Rocket Chassis was unbelievable,” said Drown in the Engine Pro Victory Lane.

“Malcuit Racing Engines got us to victory lane again…I think this is number 11. I didn’t know how we were going to do tonight but Sean (Weekly) fine-tuned the car again and right tire choice and it just worked out for us,” continued Drown. “I feel like I’m young yet but obviously I have like 15 years on them (Pierce and Sheppard). I’m sitting there like on lap 30 and I’m like I could use a caution to regroup…I was a little wore out from the heat. Definitely got the job done and that’s all that matters.”

Not to be outdone, the O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 Sprints also put on a fantastic race. For most of the season Genoa, Ohio’s Brian Lay has served notice he was going to be a force to be reckoned with at Attica this season with numerous top five runs. He finally closed the deal Friday, storming from 15th starting spot to take the lead with a slider on Craig Mintz on a lap 24 restart and going on to score his first career 410 sprint car win on dirt.

“I knew this was coming eventually. I just tried and tried…I’ve put my dues in. I’ve flipped, I’ve crashed, I’ve wrecked and I came back for more. Right now this is what it’s all about. It’s for the fans, it’s for more crew and it’s for my old man” said an emotional Lay beside his Seagate Blasting/Local 85 Boilermakers/Fremont Floor Covering/Wood Court Collision/Gary Shumaker Fuel Transport/Black Berry Corners/Kistler Racing Products/Dave Story Equipment Repair #45.

“I pulled a Hail Mary…I pulled the wing all the way to the trunk and said go and I did,” said Lay of his winning strategy. “I knew I could get him (Craig Mintz) in one and two I just had to get a good restart. I said ‘it’s now or never’ and I told my guys that I gave people room before and I’m not giving it any more.”

And if that wasn’t good enough, the UMP Modifieds wrapped up the night with a spectacular feature. Dona Marcoullier, Jeff Babcock and Kevin. Morehouse battled for the lead the last 21 laps of the 25-lap event. When the dust settled it was Newark, Ohio’s Morehouse who was in the Engine Pro Victory Lane.

“I’m not used to these UMP tires. This is the first time I’ve ever been here and I love it. We’re used to the open tires but I can get used to these because we don’t have to have as many,” said Morehouse beside his Morehouse Logging, Sam’s Used Cars backed #88. “I would like to thank Larry Reed and his wife, Tommy Patten, Gary Clark and his boy Davey.”

DIRTcar Summer Nationals – Doug Drown #63
Drown and Sheppard would bring the field to the green for the 40-lap late model feature with Drown gaining the advantage over Sheppard, Pierce , Devin Moran, Jon Henry and Jeep VanWormer. The first caution would fly on lap three when Matt Irey spun in turn four. When the green flew, Drown pulled away slightly from Sheppard who had his hands full with Pierce as Moran, Henry, VanWormer, Dustin Griffin and Jeff Babcock gave chase.

Drown would continue to hold a two car length advantage as Sheppard and Pierce raced each other hard for the runner-up spot. The caution would fly on lap 11 when Chris Ross and JR Gentry spun. Again Drown began to pull away slightly when the green reappeared as Sheppard and Pierce tried to stay close with Henry, Moran, Griffin, Ryan Missler, Babock and Rusty Schlenk gave chase.

However, as Drown caught the rear of the field, his advantage quickly shrank as Sheppard and Pierce both closed. At the half way point, Sheppard was racing to Drown’s inside in turns one and two to challenge with Pierce right on their rear bumper. The trio ran side by side and nose to tail over the next handful of laps, thrilling the large crowd. By lap 30, the leaders were in heavy lapped traffic and Drown made a gutsy move, splitting two lapped machines to maintain his lead.

Pierce would drive into second on lap 31, but Sheppard would return the favor two laps later as they raced to Drown’s inside. With three laps to go you could throw a tissue over the top three of Drown, Sheppard and Pierce. Just as Sheppard threw a flier at Drown in turns three and four as they came to the line on lap 38, the caution flew for Ryan Missler who sat on the front stretch.

On the ensuing restart with a clear track, Drown pinched Sheppard to the bottom when the green flew and then switched lines from top to bottom in turns one and two to block Sheppard’s advance. The move paid off as Drown drove away for the win over Sheppard, Pierce, Henry and Schlenk.

O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 Sprints – Brian Lay #45L
In the 30 lap sprint feature, Cole Duncan and Stuart Williams would lead the field to the green with Duncan getting the upper hand over fourth starter D.J. Foos, Williams, Bryan Sebetto and Shane Stewart. Sebetto would grab third the next lap with Stewart taking fourth a lap later. Foos began racing to Duncan’s inside to challenge for the lead on lap four as Stewart moved into third.

Greg Wilson would come to a rest on lap four to bring out the caution. On the restart Duncan and Foos resumed their battle up front with Stewart joining the fun while Craig Mintz and Byron Reed moved around Sebetto into the top five. The lead trio of Duncan, Foos and Stewart continued their exciting battle as they hit lapped traffic by the 10th circuit, which allowed Stewart to take second. Meanwhile Lay, who started 15th, had worked his way up to 7th.

Just as Stewart was challenging Duncan for the lead on lap 14, Chris Andrews would spin, bringing out the caution as Mintz took third. The restart order was Duncan, Stewart, Mintz, Foos, Lay and Reed. When the green reappeared, Mintz and Lay both drove around Stewart as Duncan pulled away slightly.

Mintz would close the game on Duncan on lap 17 as Lay steadily gained momentum. Mintz executed a perfect flier on Duncan for the lead on lap 18. With 10 laps to go the leaders raced into lapped traffic again and Lay was racing under Duncan for second. With eight laps to go the leaders were in heavy lapped traffic which Lay used to take second. The final caution would fly on lap 23 for a Rodney Hurst spin. On the restart Lay shot to the bottom of turns one and two and slid up in front of Mintz to take the lead with Stewart rebounding to move into third.

Lay began to pull away as Mintz battled Stewart for second with Duncan and Foos giving chase. Lay would get a little hung up behind a lapped car with two laps to go, but Mintz and Stewart couldn’t get close.

Lay blasted to the checkers over Mintz, Stewart, Duncan and Foos.

In the 25-lap modified feature, Jeff Babcock and Collin Thirlby would pace the field to the green with Thirlby getting the advantage. The caution flew for debris after one lap was complete with the running order Thirlby, Babcock, Dona Marcoullier, Morehouse, Mark Anderson and last year’s Attica winner Taylor Cook.

Disaster would strike for Thirlby as he lost the handle on his machine on lap three, spinning in turn one and handing the lead to Marcoullier with Babcock and Morehouse completing the top three. With Babock riding the outer rim and Marcoullier glued to the bottom, the duo raced side by side until the caution flew on lap six for a three car pile-up.

When the green came back out Marcoullier and Babcock resumed their tremendous battle with Morehouse now joining the fun. The final caution would fly on lap 11 for Cook and Nathan Loney who tangled in turn one.

Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals – Kevin Morehouse #88
Marcoullier and Morehouse would continue their fight for the lead when the green reappeared and behind them was a fantastic battle for third involving Babcock, Anderson and 12th starter Brian Ruhlman. Morehouse would vault into the lead on lap 15 but Marcoullier wouldn’t give up and raced to his inside and actually regained the lead on lap 16. But Morehouse blasted back in front a lap later and the two raced side by side the next couple of laps. Behind them Babcock and Anders also raced side by side for third with Ruhlman moving into the top five.

As the leaders hit traffic with five laps to go, Morehouse began pulling away from Marcoullier with Anderson taking third. Morehouse would drive to the win over Marcoullier, Anderson, Babcock and Ruhlman.

Brandon Sheppard and Bobby Pierce Set To Battle During Hell Tour

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Shannon Babb hopes to keep his chances of a fourth UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals “Hell Tour” championship alive when the series visits Attica Raceway Park on Central Ohio Farmers/Summit Racing Equipment Night Friday, July 19.

Babb, from Moweaqua, IL, scored the win at “Ohio ’s Finest Racing” speed plant at last year’s Hell Tour event. He comes into Friday’s contest with a tour leading six wins but sits third in the Summer Nationals points. Babb is now tied with Bill Moyer for most career Summer Nationals wins with 82. Babb claimed the 2005, 2006 and 2011 Summer Nationals Championships.

New Berlin, Illinois driver Brandon Sheppard leads the points with his four wins followed by 16-year-old Bobby Pierce who has also scored four wins during the month of racing. Ryan Unzicker with two wins during the tour is fourth in the Summer Nationals points with Dustin Griffin rounding out the top five.

The Hell Tour started June 12 and as wraps up Saturday, July 20 at Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon , Ohio – 39 days. So far there have been 23 races and five rain outs/reschedules held in 9 different states. Of the 23 events there have been nine winners – Babb with six wins; Sheppard and Pierce with 4 wins each, Unzicker with 2 wins, Bill Moyer, Dennis Erb Jr., Brian Birkhofer, Kevin Weaver, Chris Simpson, Scott Bloomquist and Brian Shirley (the 2012 Hell Tour champion) each with one win.

The Hell Tour invaders will face the likes of local hot shoes Rusty Schlenk, who won last Friday at Attica , his third win of the season at the track and the 17th of his career. Schlenk, a former national UMP champion, leads the track’s all-time late model win list. Jon Henry has a win at Attica in 2013 and has 12 for his career at the track. Other winners in 2013 at Attica include Matt Miller, who now has 6 career Attica wins, Jeff Babcock, who has four career Attica wins, Dusty Moore, Cody Scott and Dona Marcoullier. Ryan Missler, who has been held winless at Attica in 2013, is leading the track’s points and has won the last four straight track championships. Scott, in only his third year of late model racing, is second in the track’s points followed by Matt Irey, Mike Bores and John Mayes Jr.
