Bloomquist Scores Attica Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Win; Holtgraver Takes UNOH All Star Victory

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Making his first ever visit to Attica Raceway Park, Scott Bloomquist survived a two-lap dash to the finish for his fifth Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory of the season worth $10,000 on Detroit Chocolat Night.

Bloomquist led all 50-laps in his Ole Smoky Moonshine, Lucas Oil Products sponsored Sweet-Bloomquist entry. Bloomquist, from Mooresburg, Tenn., earned his 51st career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory out dueling Steve Francis, Earl Pearson Jr., Jimmy Owens, and Mason Zeigler to round out the top five.

“It was a little bit of work out there. Depending on how you came off the corners with those…mobiles I guess you’d call them…they’d definitely throw you around. You had to pay attention where the wall was at. The car was awesome…I could run anywhere on the race track. But with two to go I felt something..like something jarred on the car. Like a lot of races this year I was wondering if I’d lose this on the last lap,” said Bloomquist.

“This is our first time here; everyone knows our winning percentage at new tracks in my career is pretty good. This is really a nice track. I hoped the fans enjoyed this show,” said the 50-year-old veteran.

“We are a little short of help this weekend, but everybody did a great job. I had to groove the tires and do some other things, but overall the car handled so well all night long. We have been so close to winning other races this year; I was determined to win this tonight. I have to thank Ole Smoky Moonshine, Penske Shocks, Hawkeye Trucking, Base Fuels, Lucas Oil Products, and Durham Race Engines.”

Both Francis and Pearson took a shot at Bloomquist in the final two circuits, but they came up short of going to victory lane.

“I caught a rock about half way through and tore the face shield off so we just were trying to see where we were going. It’s our second straight runner-up finish,” said Francis, who brought his Clint Bowyer Racing, Georgia Boot, Barry Wright Race Cars entry across the line for another podium finish. “We are really running well here lately. It’s great to be back in the mix for a win. Scott could run straighter up off the corner than we could. I slipped back to fifth at one point, and the car was so much better up top. We just didn’t have anything for Scott on that final restart. The way it turned out, we were fortunate to hold off Earl for second.”

Pearson finished third in his Bobby Labonte Racing, Lucas Oil Products, Longhorn Chevrolet. “With the way our season has gone this year, I didn’t know what was going to happen on that final restart. The car was good all race long, it would run better down low on the track. I thought I was going to get by Steve there a couple of times, but we will take this finish…I think we run third here last year. Hopefully when we come back we can move up a spot or two.”

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s Danny Holtgraver would lead all 30 laps of the University of Northwestern Ohio All Star Circuit of Champions feature to score the victory. It was the third UNOH All Star win of the year for Holtgraver and the third overall career win at Attica for the driver of the Rob Hunter Racing #10h. Holtgraver has seven total wins in 2014.

“I didn’t want to see the lapped cars with five to go. I caught them pretty quick and I thought I might be able to get around them but they were just as fast. I was struggling there. I knew Caleb (Griffith) would be there. Clean air definitely helped tonight…I was able to get out front and go,” said Holtgraver beside his Seneca Energy Corp. /Berlin Natural Bakery/Bonnell’s Rod Shop/DKW Transport backed machine.

“I can’t thank Rob Hunter enough for giving me this opportunity. And my dad, Earl, Josh, Pup…everyone that helps out. It’s a lot of fun and hopefully we can turn things around here at the end of the season and get some good runs,” added Holtgraver.

“Anyone that knows me knows I’m not real comfortable on the cushion and I wasn’t really beating it down. There was enough there to keep up my momentum. I knew I could run the bottom…luckily I was good enough to get it done. We were fast out of the box tonight and that’s where we’ve been struggling at the beginning of the night. So hopefully if we can come out tomorrow like this…it makes your night a lot easier,” concluded Holtgraver.

After a fantastic battle with Rob Chaney and Byron Reed, Attica’s 2014 track champion Caleb Griffith would take the second spot.

“We were pretty good night. I saw Big Dan (Holtgraver’s dad) come out on the red and he changed his line so I thought I could switch my line around and it looked okay for awhile and I thought we were going to get to him. But then he legged it out a little and when he got stuck in traffic Rob (Chaney) got to us and raced us hard. Bringing home second is a good effort,” said Griffith beside his Al Davis Carpet/McDonald’s/JLH General Contractor/Shelluke’s Bar/Crown Battery/B&L Plumbing/Griff’s Engines/Bethesda Care Center/Erlin Trader/Ballville EZ Shop backed machine.

Byron Reed, who scored his first win of the season last Saturday at Attica, would storm from his 11th starting spot for a third place finish.

“This isn’t generally the type of track I do well on so it feels good to run well on this. I think if I would have found the top in one and two sooner I could have gotten up there to run with them. But, once I got back up there I started catching them again. I happy with how we did,” said Reed beside his Crown Battery/Kistler Engines/ProShocks backed #5.

Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series – Scott Bloomquist #0
In the 50 lap Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series feature, Bloomquist and Francis would bring the field to green with Bloomquist gaining the advantage over Earl Pearson Jr., Francis, Jimmy Owens, and Mason Zeigler. Pearson would grab second on lap two.

Just as things seemed like they would get interesting as the leaders prepared to enter heavy lapped traffic, the caution flew on lap 12 when Ryan Markham stopped with a flat tire. Just prior Bloomquist made a daring move, splitting two lapped cars in turn three.

When the green flew again, Bloomquist pulled away from Francis, Pearson, Zeigler (who won the Summer Nationals event at Attica in July), Brian Birkhofer, Jared Landers, and Owens. Landers would spin on lap 15 to slow the race pace. When the green flew so did Bloomquist, pulling away with the battle for second heating up between Francis, Pearson and Zeigler.

As Bloomquist drove away, Pearson would take second on lap 15, bringing Zeigler to third. Zeigler would take second on lap 17 and he Pearson and Francis continues to battle hard over the next hand full of laps. The caution would fly for a Rocky Owens spin on lap 17.

The restart order was Bloomquist, Zeigler, Francis, Pearson and Owens. When the race went back to green again Bloomquist drove away from the tremendous battle for second with Zeigler, Francis and Pearson swapping the spot all over the track. Pearson would take the runner-up son on lap 20 but Zeigler continue to hound him.

The leaders would finally find lapped traffic on lap 29 and Bloomquist had a nearly three second lead over Francis, Zeigler, Pearson, Owens, Don O’Neal and Birkhofer. Nothing would change in the top six through lap 40. Pearson would finally take third on lap 41.

Bloomquist was on cruise control, extending his lead to nearly four second when the caution flew with two laps to go when Jason Papich spun in turn four. That would put Francis, Pearson, Zeigler, Owens and O’Neal right on Bloomquist rear bumper.

When the green came for the two lap dash to the finish, Bloomquist drove away for the win over Francis and Pearson. Owens would get around Zeigler to take fourth.

UNOH All-Star Circuit of Champions – Danny Holtgraver #10H
In the 30-lap UNOH All Star feature, Rob Chaney and Holtgraver would bring the field to green. But, before a lap could be completed Lee Jacobs would spin in turn two, collecting Caleb Armstrong. On the ensuing restart, Holtgraver would drive into the lead over Chaney, Duane Zablocki, Caleb Griffith, Cap Henry, Sheldon Haudenschild, Chris Andrews and Byron Reed.

Griffith would drive into third on lap two and battled with Chaney for the runner-up spot. Holtgraver would blast away on the high line as Griffith took second on lap four. The race would grind to a halt on lap seven when Jody Keegan tipped over in turn three. The restart order was Holtgraver, Griffith, Chaney, Zablocki, Reed, Sheldon Haudenschild, Henry, Andrews, Jac Haudenschild (up from 16th) and Dale Blaney (up from 18th).

Holtgraver got a tremendous restart but Griffith stayed within striking distance as Chaney and Reed battle for third. Brian Lay would spin in turn four on lap 10 for another caution. A lap later and Stuart Brubaker spun for the race’s final caution.

The restart with 19 laps to go had Holtgraver over Griffith, Chaney, Reed, Sheldon Haudenschild, Zablocki, Henry and Jac Haudenschild. As Holtgraver held his line to maintain the lead when the green reappeared, Griffith, Chaney, Reed and Sheldon Haudenschild waged a darn good battle. Reed would take third on lap 14 only to see Chaney regain the spot a circuit later.

Holtgraver could not shake Griffith as Chaney and Reed continued their war for third with Sheldon Haudenschild, Zablocki, Henry and Blaney in tow. Holtgraver finally caught the back of the pack with five laps remaining and had to move his high line to the bottom and Griffith closed. Reed would use the traffic to finally take third on lap 27.

Holtgraver would navigate through the traffic to take the win over Griffith, Reed, Chaney and Zablocki.

2014 Season To Close Out In Huge Way

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Attica Raceway Park will close out the 2014 season in a HUGE way Friday and Saturday, Aug. 29 and 30 for the traditional Attica Ambush.

The Lucas Oil Late Model Series and University of Northwestern All Star Circuit of Champions will kick off the double-header weekend on Detroit Chocolat Night, Friday, Aug. 29. The Lucas Oil Late Models will be vying for $10,000 to win while the winged UNOH All Star sprints will battle for $3,000 to win.

The UNOH All Stars headline Saturday’s event on Baumann Auto Group Night as they battle for $5,000 to win. The Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Models, Foster Auto Body 305 Sprints and Fremont Fence Dirt Trucks will also be in competition on Saturday, Aug. 30.

Four time UNOH All Star champion Tim Shaffer swept the Attica Ambush weekend in 2013. Shaffer is coming off his first All Star win of 2014 when he picked up the victory Sunday at Mercer Raceway Park. He also picked up a weekly win at Attica on April 18th, the 13th of his career at the track.

The UNOH All Stars have made only one appearance at Attica in 2014 as two other events were rained out. Four-time All Star champion and current series point leader Dale Blaney picked up the win in April at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” speedplant and leads all drivers in series wins at the track with 14. Blaney has three overall wins at Attica in 2014 to take his career total to 20 at the track to tie him for third on the track’s all-time win list.

Blaney has 12 UNOH All Star wins in 2014 and has raised his series’ leading career total to 111.

The UNOH All Stars have competed at Attica in 102 events in their history.

As always the UNOH All Stars will have their hands full with the tough Attica weekly competitors. Six time track champion Byron Reed picked up his first win of 2014 at the track this past Saturday. Caleb Griffith, who has a win at Attica in 2014, earned the track’s championship. Craig Mintz, the 2013 Attica champion, has three wins at the track this season. Cap Henry, a former All Star regular, has 2 wins at Attica in the past month and Chris Andrews also has a pair of wins at the track in 2014.

The Lucas Oil Late Model Series made their first ever appearance at Attica in 2013 and Jimmy Owens scored the win. Owens leads the series points over Don O’Neal, Scott Bloomquist, Steve Francis and Eddie Carrier Jr.

O’Neal picked up the latest Lucas Oil win at Lawrenceburg Speedway in Indiana on Saturday. Owens has eight series wins in 2014 while O’Neal has six victories.

The Lucas Oil stars will also have their hands full with Attica’s tough weekly competitors. Jeff Babcock wrapped up the track’s 2014 championship this past Saturday, winning his sixth feature of the year. Look for the likes of Ryan Markham, who has three wins at Attica this year, and Mike Bores, Ryan Missler, Rocky Owens, Doug Drown and Rusty Schlenk who have victories at Attica in 2014.

Pit gates open Friday at 3 p.m. with main gates at 4 p.m. and racing at 7:45 p.m. Pit gates open Saturday at 3 p.m. with main gates at 4 p.m. and racing at 7 p.m.

Reed, Babcock, Clark & Valenti Claim Feature Wins; Griffith, Babcock, Ryan & Valenti claim Attica Track Championship Crowns

By Brian Liskai: (Attica, OH) Byron Reed has been racing quite awhile now. But even a veteran can start doubting himself when he goes through a drought. Reed, a six time Attica Raceway Park champion, came into the Kistler Racing Products Presents the Mark Keegan Classic Championship Night winless in 2014.

That all changed Saturday as the Monclova, Ohio driver led all 30 laps to score his 30th career Attica win. Ironically, Reed is second on the track’s all-time win list to…Keegan.

“Probably part of the reason I’ve struggled so much this year…qualifying the first half of the year and bad pill draws. Everyone is so close it’s sometimes hard to get buy guys who are in clean air. Mid-season there I was pretty frustrated. We started the year off with some of the same stuff we did last year and it just wasn’t working. We had to change some stuff and we’ve been pretty good the last month and we finally have a win to show for it,” said Reed beside his Crown Battery/Kistler Engines/ProShocks backed #5.

“I have to thank my crew for staying with me and working hard. And my wife has to come to every race now because she drew the number two for the feature. My sons drew that one that got me in the back of the heat. So she has to draw now,” added Reed.

And, Castalia, Ohio’s Caleb Griffith, a former Attica 305 sprint champion, would come home second and would claim his first ever track championship in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 sprints. Griffith is only the 9th 410 sprint champion in the track’s 27 year history.

“Obviously I’m happy we won the track championship but it’s not the way I wanted to do it with Chris (Andrews) sitting in the infield and Craig (Mintz) getting hurt early in the year. But, the last five times we’ve been to the race track from the time we drop the trailer door to the time we roll out to the heat race it’s been a complete struggle. This is fantastic for the guys. Byron was a little bit better than us on the short run…we needed lapped traffic. That’s Byron’s first win this year…that shows you how competitive this deal is,” said Griffith beside his Al Davis Carpet/McDonald’s/Crown Battery/JLH General Contractor/Shelluke’s Bar/Fremont Fence/Griff’s Engines backed machine.

Wayne, Ohio’s Jeff Babcock and Mike Bores would battle throughout the 25 laps of the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Model feature with Babcock taking control on lap 18. The Wayne Hurricane would drive to his 6th feature win of the year at Attica to wrap up the track championship. It was his 10th career victory at Attica. All he had to do was take the green in the feature to wrap up the track title.

“Mikey Bores has come a long way racing. Man he was giving me all kinds of fits there…I just couldn’t get him. Finally we got going good enough to get by,” said Babcock beside his Holcomb Racing/Best Performance Motorsports/Craig Miller Trucking/Bulk Material Lift.com/Professional Drywall backed #1.

“I’ve never really been one to race for championships and I found out why tonight. Even when I went out for the feature I had butterflies in my belly for some reason. I know why I don’t race for championships because I’m no good at them. It’s hard to describe the feeling that comes with a championship…it’s pretty neat,” added Babcock.

Fremont’s Bobby Clark would drive under Steve Rando for the lead on lap 13 of the Foster Auto Body 305 Sprint feature and would pull away for his second win of the season. The victory is the 15th of his career at Attica and ties him with D.J. Foos – ironically the son of Clark’s crew chief – for 6th on the division’s all-time win list.

“We were mediocre with my car and they had this car out for a couple of runs (with Bobby’s nephew driving) and it looked kind of promising. So we decided we wanted to try it…I think we’re going to keep it,” said Clark beside his Fremont Fence/Little Bar on the Prairie/B&L Plumbing/Kear’s Speed Shop/Big D’s Pizza/Kistler Engines/Nagy Equipment Sales/CRF Concrete/Willey’s Towing backed machine.

Clark started the feature with his wing pulled way back on the car. While most were rim-riding around turns three and four, Clark was able to drive the middle and bottom of the track in a 25-lap non-stop feature event.

“Dave (Foos, crew chief) always has a good read on the track. He pays attention and that’s what he decided to do with the wing and I’m glad he did. As long as I kept it low and smooth I had good drive off. I might have another year or two in me yet,” added Clark.

Castalia, Ohio’s Jordan Ryan, just 16 years of age, would drive from 13th to an eighth place finish to wrap up his first ever Attica track championship.

“I hustled just to get a top four in the heat to make the feature. In the feature we started deep and I was just trying to stay calm and stay away from other cars. We’re planning on going 410 racing next year but we’ll see what happens. It’s been a real consistent season and that’s the key,” said Jordan who has had 11 top five finishes in 2014 at Attica.

“I have to thank my crew, my dad, my mom and everyone that helps me out including Village Pizza House, Big D’s Lawn Care, Frost Frog, Walton’s Cutting Crew, Griff’s Engines, J&J Automotive…without those guys I couldn’t do it,” added Ryan.

To say Shawn Valenti has had a dream season is a big understatement. The Risingsun, Ohio driver scored his 5th win of the season in the Fremont Fence Dirt Trucks at Attica, leading all 15 laps for his 9th career victory. The win ties Valenti with Brian Arnold for fourth on the track’s all-time win list. He also has 10 truck wins at Fremont in 2014 and picked up a pair of wins in stock car action at Limaland.

“It’s just been one heck of a year. And I had a lot of fun running around in a late model too (he drove Babcock’s back-up at Attica). I have to thank all the guys behind this team. Jason Jimison has stuck with us all year…Jeff Babcock puts me in this fast thing and my wife for giving me the time and opportunity to do this,” said Valenti beside his Craig Miller Trucking/Best Performance Motorsports/Conrad Transportation/Dave Story Equipment Repair/Day Dream and Memories Crafts and Antiques/KS Sales and Service/JP Enterprises backed truck.

Brian Lay and Reed would bring the field to green for the 410 sprint feature with Reed gaining the advantage over Lay, Christopher Bell, Griffith, Cap Henry, Gary Taylor and Brian Smith. Griffith would drive into third on lap three.

Reed would drive into heavy lapped traffic by the 7th circuit as Griffith picked up second. Griffith began closing on Reed as they worked through traffic with Bell, Lay, Henry, Taylor, Craig Mintz and Rob Chaney in pursuit.

The first caution would fly on lap 17 when Bell spun off of turns three and four while running third. On the restart and with a clear track Reed pulled away slightly from Griffith, Henry, Mintz, Lay, Taylor and Chaney.

All eyes were on Chris Andrews who had started 12th and needed a solid top eight finish to secure the track championship. He was up to 9th by lap 18.

The more laps under green that were run, Griffith was able to close on Reed. With seven laps remaining the running order was Reed, Griffith, Mintz, Henry, Lay, Taylor, Chaney and Andrews. However, Andrews would make contact with one of the infield tractor tire barriers on lap 27, bringing out the caution and ending his championship run.

The three lap shoot-out saw Reed drive to victory with Griffith just a car length back. Mintz, Chaney and Henry would round out the top five.

In the 25-lap late model feature, Cody Scott and Mike Bores brought the field to green with Bores jumping into the lead over Scott, Rocky Owens, Matt Irey and Babcock. Babcock would shoot into second on lap three just before the caution flew for a Matt Irey spin. On the restart Bores and Babcock began their race-long battle with Owens, Scott, Ryan Missler, John Bores and Justin Chance in tow.

Bores and Babcock ran side-by side over the next several laps before the caution would fly for one of the infield tires being tossed onto the track on lap 12. When the green reappeared so did the battle between Bores and Babcock with Owens, Missler, Scott, John Bores and Irey in tow.

The caution would fly on lap 15 for a Michael Stiltner spin with the running order Bores, Babcock, Owens, Missler, Scott, John Bores and Irey. Again when the green flew so did the side by side racing between Mike Bores and Babcock.

Babcock was finally able to slip under Bores and drive up in front to take the lead on lap 18. Once in the lead, Babcock was able to pull away slightly over Mike Bores, Owens, Missler, John Bores, Irey and Scott.

But, Steve Sabo would spin with three laps to go, giving Bores one last shot at Babcock. When the green flew Bores tried to drive under Babcock but the Wayne Hurricane held on and drove to the win over Mike Bores, Owens, Irey and Missler.

Steve Rando and Tyler Gunn brought the field to green for the 305 sprint feature with Rando bolting into the lead over Ricky Peterson, Gunn, Clark, Trey Jacobs, Nate Dussel, Paul Weaver and Dustin Dinan. Clark would take third on lap three and immediately pressured Peterson.

Rando couldn’t shake the rest of the field as Clark finally took second on lap 11 and closed quickly on the leader with Peterson, Gunn, Dussel, Dinan, Weaver, Jacobs and John Ivy in tow. Clark would drive under Rando for the lead on lap 13 as the leaders prepared to encounter heavy lapped traffic.

Clark sliced his way through traffic while Rando now had his hands full with Peterson with Dussel, Dinan, Weaver, Gunn, Ivy, Jacobs and Ryan in pursuit. With five laps to go Clark had three lapped cars separating him from Rando as Dussel drove into third.

John Ivy and Keith Sorg paced the field to the green for the dirt truck feature that would see only one caution flag during the 15-lap distance. Valenti would storm from his fourth place starting position into the lead at the drop of the green with Sorg, Kent Brewer, Ivy, Brad Keckler, Dana Fry and Matt Foos giving chase.

Brewer would take second on lap two and closed on Valenti with Sorg, Ivy and Keckler locked in a tremendous battle for third. At the half-way point, Valenti and Brewer were battling side by side for the lead with Sorg, Ivy and Foos not in a war for third. Ivy would take the third spot on lap 11 but Foos and Sorg made it a three wide battle the next lap.

Valenti was able to pull away the last three laps for the win over Brewer, Foos, Ivy and Sorg.
