Kemenah rebounds for impressive Attica FAST win
Ivy gets 305 win for birthday present; Foos earns tough truck victory

By Brian Liskai ATTICA, Ohio – A week ago Chad Kemenah had a rough night at Attica Raceway Park against the World of Outlaws. While he and his Hunter Racing team had their hopes up for a good night, misfortune haunted them all night.

But the team put that behind them and focused on the next race. It paid off. The Alvada, Ohio driver passed Dean Jacobs on lap 7 and then picked his way through traffic to score his 21st career 410 sprint win at Attica on Croghan Colonial Bank/Tiffin Paper Company Night.

“I can’t remember that far back…when we last won a race here. I want to thank Rob and Rita Hunter, Champion Oil, K&N Filters, Nighthawk Holdings…Rob and Rita mostly for giving me a chance to do this with my brother (crew chief Brian). I won Attica baby,” said an ecstatic Kemenah beside his Seneca Energy, Brilex LLC, Berlin Bakery #10H.

“We were really concentrating on last week. We were good in the heat and got a hole in the right rear tire and from there it just snowballed. We got in a crash in the B and it was just one thing after another. That’s just the way racing goes sometimes. You have to learn to weather those and I’ve kind of grown up believe it or not over the years and you come back and try to do this. I can’t thank my brother and Scott Euler for all work they put in this thing. I know with my brother in my corner I’m going to win. Hope this puts a smile on Rob and Rita’s faces,” added Kemenah.

While he didn’t get the win, a runner-up finish for Dean Jacobs gives him very valuable points as he tries to close in on Byron Reed and Cap Henry for the Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title (FAST) Championship Series title.

In the Foster’s Auto Body 305 Sprints, veteran John Ivy celebrated his 46th birthday in style, taking the lead from Jason Keckler on lap nine and then holding off a charging Steve Rando to record his 14th career win in the division at Attica.

“I was getting excited (the last five laps) and I didn’t want to over drive it so I figured I’d better settle down. I kind of got screwed up a little in lapped traffic. I thought I’d better go for it and see what happens,” said Ivy who made a great move with four laps to go to split two lapped cars – one being his daughter – in turn two to maintain the lead.

“I have to thank the whole Sipe family for giving us this opportunity. We told them we would get them on the horse track and we did it,” added Ivy beside his L&R Farms, Gressman Powersports, Sonny’s Machine and Welding, Adkins Fence and Sanitation, Kear’s Speed Shop, Graphics Gone Wild backed #77i.

After a fantastic three truck battle the first six laps of the Fremont Fence Dirt Truck feature, Matt Foos would find his groove on a restart and drove away to his third career Attica win.

“I saw him (Cory McCaughey) peak down at the bottom…I wasn’t really sure…that’s the problem of starting on the pole, you really don’t know where it’s fast. I saw him poke his nose down there and then we got that caution and I ducked down there,” said Foos beside his Fremont Fence, Automatic Fire Protection, M&L Excavating, Pit Stop Convenience Store, D&R Transmissions, CA Kustoms backed #2.

Jacobs and Craig Mintz, both former Attica track champions, would bring the field to green for the 30-lap O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 Sprint feature. After a lap battle, Jacobs would grab the point over Mintz, Kemenah, Jamie Veal, Rob Chaney, Cap Henry and Caleb Griffith.

Kemenah would drive by Mintz for the runner-up spot on lap three and began closing on Jacobs when the caution flew for a stalled D.J. Foos. During the caution Jordan Ryan, who was making his 410 sprint debut, would stop on the track and would head pit side to end his night.

On the restart Kemenah pressured Jacobs and would drive around him for the lead on lap seven. Behind Jacobs, the running order was Mintz, Veal, Chaney, Henry, Paige Polyak and 18th starter Byron Reed. Foos would spin again on lap eight, ending his night.

When the green flew so did Kemenah, rib-riding around the track to build a five car length lead with Jacobs, Mintz, Veal, Henry and Reed in pursuit. Jody Keegan would drive off the banking in turn one on lap 11 to bring out the final caution of the feature.

Kemenah and Jacobs would pull away from a great battle for third between Mintz and Veal when the green reappeared. Veal would take the position on lap 13. By the half-way point, Jacobs had found something on the bottom of turns one and two and was closing on Kemenah with Veal, Mintz, Reed and Henry in tow.

The leaders would hit lapped traffic with nine circuits to go and Jacobs closed to within a couple of car lengths of Kemenah with Veal, Mintz, Reed, Henry, Chaney and Stuart Brubaker giving chase. Kemenah was patient and worked his way through the traffic with Jacobs trying to stay close. Veal would slip over the cushion on lap 26, giving third back to Mintz.

Kemenah would execute a perfect move around two lapped cars with three to go to seal the win. Jacobs would finish second with Mintz, Reed and Henry rounding out the top five.

In the 25 lap 305 sprint feature, Trey Jacobs and Jason Keckler would bring the field to green with Keckler gaining the advantage over Jacobs, Jim Taddeo, Bryan Sebetto, Ivy and Steve Rando. Keckler would begin to build a sizeable lead while Jacobs and Taddeo tussled over second with Sebetto, Ivy and Rando battling behind them. Ivy would blast around Sebetto and Taddeo on lap five to grab third and a lap later took second.

The only caution would fly for a Jeremy Duposki spin on lap six, wiping out a big lead for Keckler. On the restart Ivy immediately challenged and would take the lead with a high line move on lap 9.

Keckler would then battle with Sebetto and Rando over the next two laps with Sebetto taking second on lap 12 and Rando moving into third a lap later. Ivy would race into heavy lapped traffic on lap 16 with Sebetto, Rando, Jamie Miller (up from his 12th starting spot), Keckler and Jacobs in tow.

Rando would use the lapped cars to take second on lap 18 and closed rapidly on Ivy, with Sebetto and Miller locked in a battle for third. With three laps to go, Rando was within two car lengths of Ivy as the pair diced their way through lapped traffic as Miller also closed.

Ivy made a daring move splitting two lapped cars exiting turn two with two laps to go to seal the win. Rando would come home a very close second with Miller, Sebetto and Kyle Capodice rounding out the top five.

In the 15-lap truck feature, Foos and McCaughey brought the field to green which immediately became a three truck battle for the lead with Brandon Leighton getting in on the action. Those three would run side by side and swap the lead all the way around the track but it was Foos who maintained the top spot.

The only caution flew on lap six for Dana Fry and Brian Arnold who were battling for fourth. When the green flew Foos went to the bottom groove and began to pull away from McCaughey who was able to get away from Leighton slightly with Keith Sorg, Dustin Keegan and Kyle Cline in tow.

Foos would hit his marks perfectly the rest of the way to take the win with McCaughey, Leighton, Sorg and Keegan rounding out the top five.

Attica Raceway Park gets back to action Friday, June 12 for Mid-Season Championship Night on Burns Electric/Ohio Logistics Night. The 410 and 305 sprints along with the UMP late models and trucks will all be in action with double points on the line.

Blaney holds home turf against the World of Outlaws at Attica

By Brian Liskai ATTICA, Ohio – Dale Blaney defended home turf for the second straight year against the World of Outlaws Friday at Attica Raceway Park. The Hartford, Ohio driver drove around Cody Darrah on a restart with 25 laps to go and went on to score the $10,000 Kistler Engines Classic.

For Blaney it is his 22nd career win at Attica, and he becomes the first back-to-back World of Outlaws winner at the track since Steve Kinser accomplished the feat in 1990 and 1991. Blaney has won three of his 10 career World of Outlaw victories at Attica. Blaney became the 12th different series winner out of 29 events so far in 2015.

“We had a good car all night. We got lucky and got a good draw and got out early and had quick time and made it through our heat. We were really really good in the dash and I put myself in a good position. I got a great restart there…kept my speed up a little bit. We came to the line together but I had a head of speed going. I could have pressed the issue with Cody a couple of times but it was a 40 lap race so I laid back a little. It was great to race with Cody and we’ll have to battle with him every week with the All Stars,” said Blaney beside his Go Muddy.com, Eyecon Trail Cameras, BaddAzz Box Blinds, Xecute Scent Control backed #1.

Can’t say enough about Todd Quiring and Big Game and Muddy. They’ve come on board and given us a great opportunity to do some good. And Janet Holbrook with CH Motorsports is awesome to work with. I’m really happy to get them all a win. To get a win at Attica…to defend what I did last year just makes it more special,” added Blaney.

For Red Lion, Pennsylvania’s Darrah, a former World of Outlaws regular who is back in the family owned car, he made one costly mistake on the restart and it cost him

“I’ve been struggling on my restarts lately and have been getting yelled at. I got a little too anxious and went a little too early and had to get my tires back under me and it gave him just enough time to get around me. And once he got in front of me I throttled down and put myself in a wheel stand. I made a bad mistake and another one after that,” said Darrah beside his J&K Salvage, Eichelberger’s U-Pull It, J&K Automotive, Factory Kahne Shocks backed #87.

“I felt like we had a great car…we were right with him there in traffic. When it slows down like this it’s really hard to get grip. I’ve learned so much racing behind him the last couple of races. He’s been kicking our butt but we’re closing up on him. I have to thank my parents for giving me the opportunity to be here, Kasey Kahne for giving us the resources to be out here this year,” added Darrah.

Watertown, Connecticut’s David Gravel would also use that restart with 25 laps to go to gain several positions and later drive into third and was closing on Blaney and Darrah but ran out of laps.

“It’s been a work in progress and everyone’s been working hard to make this deal better. We got a second at Charlotte and now a third so hopefully we can continue to build off this. I was eighth on that restart and I was fourth coming out of turn two so that was a big help. The track slowed down and I got the wing back and went where those guys weren’t. We had a great car…wish it was 50 laps. It was getting interesting,” said Gravel beside his Rick Rogers Construction, Mondak Portables, Fort Union Supply and Trading, Champion Lubricants backed #7.

“I can’t thank Rick and Barb Rogers and all my guys, Scott Benic, Lee Stauffer, Bob Hug…all the guys are working hard. The rainout at Lawrenceburg probably helped us out. It gave us a whole week to prepare for this weekend and catch up on some things. We’re still a work in progress but I’m excited about the future and getting a win here soon,” added Gravel.

In the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Models, Ashland, Ohio’s Ryan Markham would hold off a last lap, last corner challenge from Doug Drown to claim his second win of the season at Attica. His half-car length victory is the sixth of his career at the track.

“The right front tire was going away or something. Some of it could be a little driver error. It’s been a long couple of weeks. Very little sleep trying to get this thing to the race track…it didn’t even get washed from last week,” said Markham of his Cool It Thermo Tec., H&T Demolition, Lias Tire by Tye Twarog backed machine.

“We were a little softer on tire and some guys went harder. Starting up front I was afraid to go with a harder tire. You just have to be patient. On those cautions my tire would be coming in and then go away and then come in and go away,” added Markham in the Engine Pro Victory Lane.

Darrah and Blaney would bring the field to green for the 40-lap World of Outlaws feature. Darrah would gain the upper hand over Blaney with Dean Jacobs, Joey Saldana, Daryn Pittman, Kerry Madsen and Jason Sides in tow.

Blaney would move to Darrah’s outside to challenge over the first five circuits before nearly making contact attempting to drive to the outside of Darrah exiting turn four. Darrah would pull away slightly as Blaney settled into second while Jacobs, Saldana, Pittman, Rob Chaney, Madsen, D.J. Foos, Sides and Madsen gave chase.

Just as the leaders were preparing to get into heavy lapped traffic the caution would fly when Jacobs and Foos banged wheels while battling for fourth, sending Foos to the pits with front end damage. On the ensuing double-file restart Darrah would choose the inside lane and when the green flew Blaney blasted into the lead with Saldana running third. Gravel, who started 11th, used the restart to blast from eighth to fourth with Pittman, Chaney and Sides in tow.

At the half-way point Blaney led Darrah by about three car lengths with Saldana, Gavel, Pittman and a tremendous battle for sixth involving Sides, Donnie Schatz, Chaney, Jacobs and Madsen. The car on the move was 24th place starter James McFadden who had driven into the top 10.

Gavel would reel in Saldana and the pair would battle side by side for several laps until Gravel took third on lap 29. The leaders would get into heavy lapped traffic with 10 laps to go and Darrah closed the gap on Blaney as did Gravel with Saldana, Pittman, Schatz, Sides, Chaney and McFadden in tow.

With five laps to go the top three of Blaney, Darrah and Gravel ran nose to tail as they sliced through the traffic. Blaney was able to maneuver around the lapped cars and drove to the win over Darrah, Gravel, Saldana and Pittman rounding out the top five.

Current World of Outlaws point leader Donny Schatz would drive from his 15th starting spot to sixth with Sides, McFadden (up from 24th starting spot), Chaney and Madsen rounding out the top 10.

Markham and Drown would bring the field to green for the 25 lap late model main with the pair racing side by side for the lead as the caution flew with a lap scored for Dusty Moore. When the green flew again the battle up front continued with Mike Bores running third.

The caution came out again on lap seven when Chris Keller, Greg Haskell and Ben Mott got together. A lap and another caution for a Josh Haynes spin. When the green flew Markham and Drown continued their battle with Bores, Matt Irey, Larry Kingseed, Brad Malcuit and Dave Hornikel in tow.

Markham pulled away ever so slightly from Drown as the laps ticked off. But, a caution on lap 15 involving Mott and Bob Mayer would give Drown another opportunity. When the race resumed Drown stayed close to Markham with Bores, Irey, Malcuit, Devin Shiels and Hornikel giving chase.

Markham would hit his marks and pulled away slightly from Drown as Bores and Irey were locked in a tremendous battle for third. However, as Markham took the white flag Drown suddenly came to life and drove to Markham’s outside. The pair raced side by side down the back stretch and into three and four. As they rocketed off turn four to the checkers Drown drove to Markham’s outside. Markham would edge Drown by half a car length for the win with Bores, Irey and Malcuit rounding out the top five.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday June 5. It will be a Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title (FAST) Championship Series Presented by KS Sales and Service points night for the 410 sprints with the 305 sprints and dirt trucks also in action.
