Dean Jacobs rockets to 2nd Attica win Ryan Markham gets wild late model victory; Jordan Ryan earns 4th straight 305 sprint win

ATTICA, Ohio – Dean Jacobs has been very close to winning the $10,000 Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title (FAST) Championship Series and it has made him even more determined to hoist one of those Kistler Cups.

The Wooster, Ohio driver is off to a FAST start toward that goal as he drove to his second series win of the season in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 Sprints at Attica Raceway Park Friday on Sutton Bank night. The victory aboard the Joe and Diane Seeling owned #97 was his 12 career victory at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” venue.

“Actually I didn’t want to see any cautions at all. With the lapped traffic…I could run the top if I had to. The car was better on the bottom but if I needed to go up there I could and pass cars. Floyd (Green) and Ronnie (Landin)…they are working very hard to give me a good race car and it shows. We’ve won two races out of four. I can run the car anywhere I want as hard as I want to,” said Jacobs beside his Northwest Ohio Towing 7 Recovery/NAPA Truck and Auto Center/Beaverdam Fleet Services/Sugar Street Bar and Grill backed machine.

“We’re going to give it a hell of a try this year to win the FAST title and both Attica and Fremont’s championships…that would be a $25,000 payday,” said Jacobs with a big grin.

In a crash-filled Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Model feature, Ashland, Ohio’s Ryan Markham would hold off Rusty Schlenk’s last lap charge to claim his first win of 2015. It was his fifth career Attica victory.

“We’ve had a fast car here all year…we’ve just not had any luck. I just tried to be patient out there. This track is fast and right now everyone is just hammer down. I want to thank all the fans for coming, my wife, Lora, my daughter Emma and Logan and all my sponsors. I’m glad to get this first win,” said Markham of his Cool It Thermo Tech/H&T Demolition/Lias Tire by Tye Twarog, Accu-Force backed #5m.

“I knew he (Ryan Missler) had been running the middle and his car was a little too tight to rotate on the bottom. We’ve been fighting that same problem all year and we’ve been making adjustments to try and free the car up so it would rotate on the bottom,” added Markham.

After a tremendous early race battle involving Jordan Ryan, Steve Rando and Jamie Miller, Ryan would pull away the last five laps of the Foster’s Auto Body 305 Sprint feature to record his fourth win in a row. It is the defending track champion’s 9th career win at Attica.

“My dad’s got the car perfect. It’s just sitting on the left rear just like I like it so I can drive the bottom. It’s hard for me to mess up when he’s got the car like that. He has it perfect every week,” said Ryan of his Frosty Frog/Sandwisch Hay and Straw/Village Pizza house/KDB Rentals/Burns Electric/Kistler Racing Products/Griff’s Engines/Big D’s Lawncare/Walton’s Cutting Crew/Precision Body and Frame backed machine.

Rookie Nate Dussel and Jimmy Light would bring the field to green for the 30 lap 410 feature with Dussel gaining the advantage as Jacobs drove into second bring Craig Mintz to third. Light would spin in turn four and Broc Martin in turn two after a lap was completed.

On the ensuing restart Jacobs would drive around Dussel to take the lead with Mintz, Cap Henry, Duane Zablocki, Byron Reed and Jody Keegan in tow. Mintz grabbed second on lap four as Dussel, Henry, Keegan, Reed, D.J. Foos and Zablocki gave chase.

The leaders would hit lapped traffic by the ninth circuit with Jacobs leading Mintz, Dussel, Keegan, Reed, Henry and Foos. Zablocki would bring out the caution on lap 13 with the running order Jacobs, Mintz, Dussel, Keegan, Reed, Henry and Foos.

When the green flew so did Jacobs, pulling away slightly from Mintz as Dussel and Keegan battled for third. Keegan would take the third position at the half-way point. Jacobs and Mintz drove away from the pack as Keegan, Dussel, Foos, Henry, Caleb Griffith and Chris Andrews gave chase.

With 18 laps scored Jacobs and Mintz had comfortable advantages but the battle for third was fun to watch between Keegan, Dussel and Foos. Foos would take the third spot on lap 19 as the leaders began to race into lapped traffic.

The caution would fly with four laps to go when Henry spin in turn four. On the restart Gary Taylor would spin in turn two. When the green flew for the third time Jacobs could not shake Mintz with Foos, Reed, Dussel, Keegan, Griffith and a closing Stuart Brubaker in tow.

Jacobs and Mintz ran nose to tail the last four laps with Jacobs rocketing to the win. Mintz, Foos, Reed and Dussel would round out the top five.

Devin Shiels and Rick Bond brought the field of late models to green for their 25 lap affair. Shiels would gain the upper hand over Bond, Kyle Moore, Ryan Missler, Chris Keller, Matt Irey, Markham and Schlenk. The first caution would fly after a lap was scored when Josh Haynes spun.

On the restart Missler would rocket to the high side and drive into the lead, as Shiels suffered mechanical issues as did Bond as both retired to the pits. Missler would lead Moore and Keller when the yellow fell again for a Ken Hahn spin with only two laps in.

On the restart Missler pulled away from Moore with Irey, Keller, Markham, Schlenk and Dave Hornikel in pursuit. Irey would grab second on lap four as a tremendous battle ensued for third between Moore, Markham and Keller.

The third caution of the feature would fly on lap six for a Ben Mott spin. On the restart Missler again pulled away as Irey had his hands full with Moore, Markham and Keller. Markham would take third on lap seven with Moore, Schlenk, Keller, Hornikel and Doug Drown staying close. The caution would fly for another Mott spin on lap eight. On the ensuing restart Irey would nearly spin and stopped.

While lining back up Moore and Drown got into an on track altercation. As Drown tried to get to the infield Moore would drive around the track, searched Drown out and blasted into his race car. Moore would be disqualified from the feature.

On the ensuing restart Freddie Carpenter would fly off the banking in turn one for yet another caution. When the green fly once more Missler would be challenged by Markham with Schlenk and Keller in tow.

Markham would drive under Missler for the lead on lap 10 with Schlenk, Keller, Hornikel, Mike Bores, Cody Scott and Larry Kingseed in pursuit. By lap 13 Markham was pulling away from Missler with Schlenk, Keller and Hornikel locked up in a great battle for third.

With seven laps to go Keller would retire to the pits as Markham held a comfortable lead over Missler, Schlenk, Hornikel, Mores and Scott. Bores and Scott would tangle on lap 22 with Jim Gingery spinning to avoid the stopped cars.

On the restart Markham could not shake Missler who had his hands full with Schlenk with Hornikel and Irey staying close. After taking the white flag, Schlenk would blast away at the high groove to take second and closed quickly on Markham. Markham would drive the middle of the track to perfection and held off Schlenk for the win with Missler, Irey and Hornikel rounding out the top five.

In the 25-lap 305 feature it was rookie Alex Hill and Jamie Miller leading the field to green but a bad start necessitated a caution during which Jeremy Duposki would flip. He was uninjured.

On the second start Miller would gain the advantage over Steve Rando, Hill, Ryan, Seth Schneider, Trey Jacobs, Tyler Street and Bobby Clark. Ryan would move into third a lap later and the battle for the lead between Miller, Rando and Ryan was on. Dylan Kingan would spin on lap four. When the green flew the three cars battle resumed. Ryan would take second on lap seven held a narrow lead over Miller on the next lap.

The leaders raced into traffic by the 10th lap with Ryan still clinging to a small lead over Miller with Rando, Schneider, Clark, Jacobs, Ricky Peterson, Hill and Kyle Capodice in pursuit.

Ryan would begin to pull away until the caution flew on lap 15. Ryan bolted away on the restart as Miller, Rando, Clark, Schneider, Peterson, Jacobs, Paul Weaver, Hill and Capodice gave chase. Street would stop on lap 17 for the final caution.

When the green flew so did Ryan as he pulled away from Miller. Rando had his hands full with Clark as Schneider and Peterson tried to close. With five laps to go Ryan was unchallenged while Miller and Clark battled for second and Schneider and Rando traded third back and forth.

Ryan would drive to the victory over Miller, Clark, Schneider and Rando.

Attica Raceway Park will play host to the 305 Engine Builders Challenge paying the feature winner $1,200 on Friday, May 8. It is also the first leg of the Attica Raceway Park/Wayne County Speedway Late Model Challenge with the dirt trucks also in action.

Attica and Wayne County Late Model Challenge Returns For Second Year

After a successful first year that saw 60 drivers compete in the seven race series, one rainout, track promoters John Bores of Attica Raceway Park along with Jason and Kristin Flory of Wayne County Speedway have announced the dates of the second annual Super Late Model Series for the two tracks.

All the races will be double week-end events as ARP will kick the series off on Friday, May 8th and then move down to WCS on Saturday May 9th. The Series will return to action on the week-end of July 17th (ARP) and 18th (WCS) and then again two weeks later on Friday, August 7th (ARP) and Saturday, August 8th (WCS). The final week-end of the Super Late Model Series will happen on Friday, August 21st at Attica Raceway Park and then end up at Wayne County Speedway on Saturday, August 22nd. There will be a $10 entry fee for each race.

The purse will be the same as last year with the feature winner collecting $1,500 and it will pay $200 to start the features. The Series Champion will pocket $1,500 with the runner-up getting $750 as third place will receive $550 and $450 to fourth as fifth place will collect $400. All of the top 10 in points will receive a $100 gift card from Summit Racing and the driver who scores the most heat wins will get a $250 credit on a wrap from Innovative Graphics. Additional awards are still being worked on for this season.

Attica Raceway Park is using the UMP rules and each car must use a Hoosier LM 20, 30 or 40 on all fours. Wayne County Speedway will go with the same Hoosier Tire rule but will also allow American Racer 44 or harder tires. Hoosier Tire will give a new tire to the highest finisher at each track.

Ashland’s Ryan Markham was the Series champion last year followed by Mike Bores, Shane McLoughlin, Larry Kingseed and Keith Berner.

Chaney blasts to 410 Attica win; Drown earns late model victory; Ryan gets 3rd 305 win in a row

By Brian Liskai ATTICA, Ohio – Rob Chaney avoided contact with another racer on two occasions and then blasted past Gary Taylor on a restart to drive to his 10th career 410 sprint win at Attica Raceway Park Friday.

At the beginning of the race Chaney and Cap Henry tangled on the front stretch while battling for third. A few laps later the two would make contact entering turn three leaving Henry with a flat tire while Chaney continued on. A restart with 19 laps to go gave Chaney the opportunity he needed as he executed a perfect slider on Taylor to take the lead. Taylor would hound Chaney the rest of the race including a restart with five laps to go. But, the Millersburg, Ohio driver would master the cushion to perfection to take the victory on Fisher Performance/Merrill Lynch Night.

Chaney is coming off a second place run with the UNOH All Stars the previous week at Wayne County Speedway. Though on Friday, his Stan Cortad owned team would bring out a different machine.

“You know how we are. We were running good so we had to try another car and see if we could make it go good. I guess it worked out,” said Chaney beside his Jon Wright’s Custom Chrome Plating backed #9x.

“We had motor troubles all night and actually in the feature I really had a hard time running the curb the way I wanted to because it would pull down when I get up into it and I’d get tight. It may have helped me down the straight-away…it wouldn’t spin the tires but it was tough in the corners. For as bad as the motor was running the car was phenomenal. I want to thank Stan and all these guys. I’ve been with him a long time and it’s sweet to get these wins,” continued Chaney.

“The front stretch is on him and the back stretch is on me,” added Chaney of his run-in with Henry. “I’m going to go apologize to him because that was a really bad spot to get into him and honestly I don’t know how I closed on him that quick. I don’t know if he spun and I didn’t but I definitely didn’t intend to get into him there,” concluded Chaney, adding the win is a 16th birthday present to his son, Brayden.

Wooster, Ohio’s Doug Drown would battle Devin Shiels for several laps and then held off a late race challenge from Chris Keller to score his first win of the year in the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Models. It was his seventh career win at Attica.

“We’ve been scratching our heads with this…I haven’t been happy with it. We’ve been running seconds and even tonight carrying the left front wheel. It’s fast but it’s hard to maneuver. I say that but tonight it was good all over,” said Drown beside his Halls Auto Sales/Malcuit Racing Engines/Nationwide Vehicle Protection/Wooster Glass/Kar Konnections backed #240.

“I knew there was an outside down there (turns three and four)…those guys were cat fishing and I knew I could roll them if they got fighting. It was there…the track was there. The guys did a great job on the track. It’s definitely a great place to race,” continued Drown.

“I wasn’t going to race at all this year. Thank you to Leroy Hall and Halls Auto Sales and Charlie Duncan for giving up the ride for me to get in for me to play around. I didn’t get to hot lap because of work…work comes first..I have to take care of the family. I’m fortunate that Dave Miller and I work hard in the garage. I think we’ve found something,” concluded Drown.

Defending Attica 305 sprint champion Jordan Ryan would drive around Steve Rando on a restart with just one lap to go to score his third straight win and the eighth of his career at the track. Ryan said his goal this year is to win not only the Attica title again but the Fremont Speedway and JLH General Contractor FAST 305 Championship Series as well.

“I was going to low in one and two a couple of laps before and Rando kept getting a run. So I knew (on the last lap restart) I had to hit my marks in the middle. I could pretty much hold it wide open in the middle. The car was getting on the left rear so good and I came out next to him. I knew he was going to be fast in three and four and I knew I had to get the good slide job in and it worked,” said Ryan beside his Village Pizza House/KDB Rentals/Burns Electric/Frosty Frog/Sandwisch Hay and Straw/J&J Automotive/Kistler Racing Products/Griff’s Engines/Big D’s Lawncare/Walton’s Cutting Crew/Precision Body and Frame backed machine.

“To keep going from last year is pretty cool. We’re going to try and win all three championships. This time it wasn’t so easy,” added Ryan who started 11th in the feature.

For the O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 Sprints 30 lap feature Jordan Harble and Gary Taylor would bring the field to green. Taylor would jump out to a big advantage over Harble with Chris Andrews, Chaney, Henry, Duane Zablocki and Dean Jacobs in tow.

Harble’s motor would let go a lap later with Taylor holding a commanding lead over Andrews, Henry, Chaney, Jacobs, Zablocki, Nate Dussel and Byron Reed. Taylor would blast into lapped traffic on lap six with a tremendous three-way battle being waged for second involving Andrews, Henry and Chaney. Henry and Chaney would tangle entering turn three on lap seven with Henry stopping with a flat tire. He would rejoin the rear of the field. The restart order was Taylor, Andrews, Chaney, Jacobs, Reed and 14th starter Caleb Griffith.

When the green flew so did Taylor, pulling away to a several car length lead while Andrews, Chaney and Jacobs battled hard for second. D.J. Foos would bring out the caution with 11 laps in with the running order now Taylor, Chaney, Andrews, Reed, Jacobs and Griffith.

On the restart Chaney executed a perfect slider in turns one and two to take the lead. Taylor would continue to race to Chaney’s inside over the next three laps while Andrews was fending off Jacobs, Reed, Stuart Brubaker, Dussel and Hunter Schuerenberg who started 16th.

The leaders would hit heavy lapped traffic by the 18th lap with the running order Chaney, Taylor, Andrews, Jacobs, Reed, Brubaker, Dussel, Schuerenberg and Griffith. Dussel would take a tumble in turn four on lap 22 to bring the action to a halt. Dussel was uninjured.

Chaney and Taylor would pull away slightly on the restart with Andrews and Jacobs locked in a battle for third with Reed, Brubaker, Griffith and Schuerenberg in pursuit. Dain Naida would coast to a stop on the front stretch with five laps to go with the running order Chaney, Taylor, Andrews, Jacobs, Reed, Griffith, Brubaker and Schuerenberg.

Chaney and Taylor continued to run close with Jacobs taking third on lap 27 followed by Andrews, Reed, Griffith and Brubaker. Chaney would drive to the win over Taylor, Jacobs, Andrews and Griffith.

In the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Model 25 lap feature Devin Shiels and Jim Gingery would bring the field to green. Before a lap could be completed Josh Haynes would spin. On the ensuing restart Shiels would grab the lead over Gingery, Matt Irey, Ryan Missler, Ryan Markham and Drown.

Irey would take second a lap later with Gingery and Markham battling for third. Markham would take third on lap four and bring Missler to fourth. Irey would race to Shiels inside by the sixth circuit as the leader raced into traffic.

By lap 10 Shiels led Irey with Drown, Markham and 10th starter Chris Keller staying close. The caution would fly on lap 13 for Haynes. On the restart Shiels would continue to lead as Irey slipped up allowing Drown, Markham, Missler and Keller to get by.

Drown would immediately challenge Shiels as the two raced side by side over the next two laps. On lap 18 Drown would drive around Shiels to the lead with Markham, Keller, Missler, Irey, Mike Bores and Rick Bond giving chase. Keller would move into second on lap 22 but ran out of laps as Drown drove to the win. Keller, Shiels, Missler and Irey would round out the top five.

John Ivy and Luke Griffith paced the field for the 25-lap 305 sprint feature. Griffith, last year’s rookie of the year, would gain the advantage over Ivy, Steve Rando, Seth Schneider and T.J. Michael.

Coming out of four to complete the fourth lap, Griffith would tangle with the heavy cushion and spin, handing the lead go Ivy. When the green reappeared Ivy would have his hands full with Rando and Michael as Schneider, Ricky Peterson and Paul Weaver gave chase.

On lap six Michael would blast into the cushion in turn four, ending his night. On the restart Ivy would lead Rando, Schneider, Peterson, Weaver, Ryan and Jamie Miller. Ivy and Rando raced side by side over the next hand full of laps while Ryan methodically worked his way into third by lap 12.

Rando would bounce over the cushion in turns three and four on lap 14 allowing Ryan to take second. Ryan would immediately race to Ivy’s inside but the veteran held off the young challenger over the next few laps.

It was nearly disaster on lap 17 when Frank Neill and Jim Taddeo would tangle in turn four right in front of the leaders. On the restart Ivy would continue to hold off Ryan with Randy mounting another challenge with Schneider, Peterson and Bobby Clark giving chase.

From lap 18 through lap 22 it was a tremendous three car battle for the lead with Ryan on the bottom, Ivy in the middle and Rando up top. Rando would drive into the lead on lap 23 with Ryan taking second while Ivy stayed close in third.

As the leaders raced into turns three and four on the final lap Neill and Alex Hill would bring out the caution. It would then become a one lap fight to the finish with the running order Rando, Ryan, Ivy, Clark, Schneider and Weaver.

Ryan would drive the middle of the track in turns one and two on the restart and Rando would blast to the top. The two were side by side down the back stretch and Ryan executed a slider in turn three to take the lead as they drove to the checkers. Behind Ryan and Rando at the finish line were Ivy, Clark and Weaver.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, May 1. It will be a Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title (FAST) Championship Series point race for the 410 sprints. The late models and 305 sprints will also be in action on Sutton Bank Night.

May 1st is also Scout night and all scouts and their leaders are encouraged to wear their uniforms for free admission. It will also be $1 hot dog night and the pits will be opened to everyone to meet the times following hot laps and before the night’s racing gets underway.
