By Brian Liskai: ATTICA, Ohio – The deal was made just Tuesday for Carson Macedo to drive Pete Grove’s #70 sprint car at Attica Raceway Park Friday, Aug. 18. The Lemoore, California driver made it pay off to the tune of $3,000 as he recorded his first ever 410 sprint win at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” speedplant.

It wasn’t an easy win for Macedo as a mistake on the last lap nearly cost him the victory. Macedo, who spent much of the 30-lap feature blasting around the cushion, went to the bottom on the final two turns to block the advance of Rob Chaney. Chaney crossed over and it was a drag race to the checkers with Macedo scoring the win by just .073 seconds on WNWO NBC 24/Tusing Builders/UBS Financial Services Night.

“I went down there because I was hoping not to get slid getting into three. Obviously it wasn’t the right decision. We came back across the line and I was like ‘ooh that was pretty close.’ I looked up and saw our number atop the board. I can’t say enough about this team; Pete Grove, both of his kids Ben and Alex, Mikey…just everybody. It’s a team effort and everybody did their job tonight and that’s what it takes to win races. Pete’s got awesome equipment, great motors…the whole package and that’s what it takes,” said Macedo beside his Olympic Forest Products, Lute’s Custom Furniture, J&J Auto Racing backed #70.

“We exchanged words on Tuesday…it’s all about racing all the time. For me the 3G team is my full-time ride…I love driving for Joe Gaerte and Tim Norman…great people and phenomenal race car. They wanted the weekend off after a long week at Knoxville which I totally understand. Me and Pete got a hold of each other and made this deal happen. I’m pretty excited we did. This is surprising really because this place is hard to win at. This place gets pretty slick and technical and it was again tonight. I won at Fremont (Speedway) a couple of times and Attica and Fremont are the places you hear about back home in California. To pick up a win here is pretty awesome,” Macedo added in the Engine Pro Victory Lane.

Ashland, Ohio’s Ryan Markham nearly destroyed his late model at Attica a few weeks ago. His crew went to work and it paid dividends Friday as he led all 25 laps for his third Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Model feature of the year and 13th of his career at the track. It wasn’t easy for Markham as he had to withstand several restarts.

“This is the same race car…first time we’ve been back out here since we got it fixed. There about 10 to 12 people that pitched in to get it back together and I have to thank all of them. I knew we were good but I didn’t want to burn a tire up so I was being kind of conservative and then I saw him (Rusty Schlenk) sticking his nose in there at the end so I was like if we burn it up we burn it up…I have to go,” said Markham beside his H&T Demolition; Harriger Towing; Accu-Force Shock Dyno; Innovative Graphics backed #5M.

Fremont, Ohio’s Paul Weaver survived a one lap shoot out to score his seventh Fremont Fence 305 Sprint car win of 2017 at Attica. Weaver lost the lead to Kyle Capodice on lap 11 while battling through heavy lapped traffic, regained it on a restart with 10 laps to go and other than the a couple of cautions late, was able to hang on for his 42nd career victory in the division at Attica.

“For the first time in probably 10 years I put a brand new tire on the right rear. We figured if we could at least win it would pay for itself. The caution in traffic helped. When you get older and you can’t see….when you come up on them you run their speed and the dust was so bad. The whole race I didn’t run high enough. But leading the points, one race to go, don’t run off the track…you know how it goes. I want to thank Bob Hampshire, Dave Rice, my wife Andrea, Daniel, M&L Excavating, Miller Rigging, Schiets Motorsports and probably one I’ve never mentioned that bails me out when I bend something is Mark Keegan,” said Weaver.

In the Hammer Pallets 410 Sprint feature Tyler Gunn and Chris Andrews brought the field to green for the 30-lap affair with Andrews grabbing the lead. After a lap was scored the caution flew for Stuart Brubaker and Justin Peck as both went to the pits with damage. When the green reappeared Andrews continued to lead while DJ Foos, Byron Reed and Gunn battled for second while seventh starter Macedo moved into fifth by lap three.

Reed took second on lap four and quickly closed on Andrews with Foos, Macedo, Rob Chaney and Gunn giving chase. Utilizing the bottom groove Reed raced under Andrews on lap eight with the leader chopping off his advance the next lap. Macedo moved into third on lap 10 as Andrews and Reed continued battling for the lead. Reed was off the pace and went to the pits on lap 11. Macedo would rim-ride into the lead on lap 13 with Foos taking second from Andrews a circuit later.

A caution for debris on lap 16 gave everyone a chance to catch their breaths with Macedo leading Foos, Chaney, Andrews, Gunn and Cap Henry. On the restart Macedo could not shake Foos and Chaney with Andrews locked in a great battle with Henry and Gunn. With seven laps to go the car on the move was 17th starter Craig Mintz who had moved into eighth. The top three ran nose to tail until three laps to go when Chaney began making his move, driving into second and closing quickly on Macedo.

As Macedo took the white flag, Chaney took a peak to his inside in turns one and two. Entering the final two turns Macedo dove to the bottom and Chaney headed to the cushion. The pair had the crowd on their feet as they blasted to the checkers. Foos would finish third to maintain his lead in the All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads FAST 410 Championship Series presented by Ohio Logistics, with Henry and 13th starting Jordan Ryan rounding out the top five.

In the 25-lap late model feature Ben Mott and Markham paced the field but Steve Kester and Dave Hornikel tangled causing a second start. On the second attempt Markham bolted into the lead over Mott, Cody Scott, Devin Shiels and Mike Bores. Scott took second on lap three just prior to a caution for a Bob Mayer spin. On the ensuing restart Ky Harper spun. When the green reappeared Markham led Scott, Shiels, Bores, Rusty Schlenk, Doug Drown, Mott and Ryan Missler.

While battling for second on lap nine Bores and Scott tangled with Bores stopping. When the green flew Markham again maintained his lead as Schlenk drove into second over Scott, Shiels, Drown, Missler and Brewer. Mott spun on lap 17, keeping the leaders out of lapped traffic. On the restart Markham was able to hold off Schlenk with Shiels and Drown battling for third. The final caution came with six laps to go. Just as he had done the entire race Markham executed a perfect restart to maintain his lead over Schlenk, Shiels, Drown, Brewer and Missler.

Schlenk began to close on Markham with three laps to go, but a bobble on the tricky cushion in turn four allowed Markham to pull away for the win. Schlenk, Shiels, Drown and Brewer rounded out the top five.

Weaver and Capodice brought the field to green for the 25 lap 305 sprint feature with Weaver blasting into the lead. Weaver and Capodice quickly established themselves as the class of the field, pulling away from a terrific battle for third involving Frank Neill, Luke Griffith, Seth Schneider and Nate Dussel. Dussel would eventually take the third spot and edge closer to the front duo as they prepared to race into very heavy lapped traffic on lap 10.

Capodice utilized the lapped cars to take the lead on lap 11 and he and Weaver ducking in and out of lapped cars running side by side. Neill would bring out the first caution on lap 13 with Capodice leading Weaver, Dussel, Griffith and Bobby Clark. A lapped was scored after the restart before Jerry Dahms spun. On the ensuing restart Weaver blasted to Capodice’s outside to regain the lead while Dussel had his hands full with Bobby Clark for third. Dussel drove off the high side of the track on lap 18 ending his bid for the win.

With a clear track Weaver pulled away as Capodice now fought with Clark for the runner-up position. Steve Rando drove off the track on lap 21 putting Capodice and Clark on Weaver’s rear bumper. Weaver pulled away again on the restart and was cruising to the win when Griffith stopped in turn two on the final lap setting up a one-lap shoot out.

Weaver blasted to the cushion and drove to the win to help add to his JLH General Contractor FAST 305 Championship series presented by Engine Pro point lead as he looks to score back-to-back championships. Capodice, Clark, Schneider and Ricky Peterson rounded out the top five.

Attica Raceway Park will host crown its champions on Friday, Aug. 25 on Kistler Racing Products/Jon Wright’s Custom Chrome Plating presents the Mark Keegan Classic Night. Double points are on the line for all three divisions.

7.28.17 Results Columbus Equipment/Morgan Stanley/American Powersports/Croghan Colonial Bank Night

By Brian Liskai ATTICA, Ohio – Byron Reed gave his son, his dad and a crew member a great birthday present at Attica Raceway Park Friday, July 28th. Reed dominated the Hammer Pallets 410 Sprint feature, leading all 30 non-stop laps for his third victory of the year at “Ohio’s Finest Racing.”

Reed’s victory on Columbus Equipment/Morgan Stanley/American Powersports/Croghan Colonial Bank Night was the 38th of his career at the track, as he sits second on the all-time 410 sprint win list. It also garnered Reed valuable points in the chase for the title of the All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads FAST 410 Championship Series presented by Ohio Logistics. The victory also gives the “north” a slight edge in the battle for Ohio with the Ohio Sprint Car Series

“I’m going to say it tonight in case I don’t win tomorrow….a bunch of birthdays this week. My son’s birthday was Tuesday, he turned 16, my dad’s birthday is tomorrow and my crew guy Kevin’s birthday is tomorrow. So happy birthday to all those guys. I also have a good friend Gary, who used to help me, here tonight. This year I don’t know what my average starting position has been but it definitely hasn’t been on the front row so it’s good to win one like that,” said Reed beside his Crown Battery backed #5.

Britton, Michigan’s Devin Shiels has finished up front consistently all season in the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Models, enough to come into Friday’s racing as the division point leader. He finally broke through for this first win of the season though it wasn’t easy as he battled last week’s winner Steve Kester and five time track champion Ryan Missler throughout the 25 lap feature that saw only one caution – with just four laps to go. Shiels took the lead on 10, only to surrender it back to Kester on lap 11 before retaking the top spot on lap 13. On the restart following a debris caution on lap 21, Shiels was able to pull away for his third career Attica win.

“This one means a lot. We’ve kind of been in a drought the last two years. We finally got one. I love this car. That yellow was great. The lappers were two and three wide ahead of me. It looked like the top and bottom were about even so I chose the top on the restart and kept my momentum up. I want to thank my dad…if it weren’t for him we couldn’t do this. Also my wife at home who’s dealing with fair stuff. Rally’s Hamburgers, Good Lift, Dundee Products and Magic Fountain Car Wash,” said Shiels in the Engine Pro Victory Lane.

In the Fremont Fence 305 sprint feature it looked like Matt Foos was headed to victory lane, but when he tangled with a lapped car with just three laps to go, Fremont, Ohio’s Jamie Miller inherited the lead and drove to his second feature win of the year at Attica. Miller’s 17th career victory in the division moved him to sixth on the track’s all-time win list.

The victory also rewarded Miller with valuable points in the title chase of the JLH General Contractor FAST 305 Championship Series presented by Engine Pro, though defending series champion Paul Weaver will continue to lead with a runner-up finish.

“I knew there was rubber up there in one and two but I was holding my own on the bottom so I didn’t want to move to find out for sure. I just kept waiting and waiting and waiting and then Matty (Foos) got into that lapped car and I thought on that restart it was time to try it. I have to thank Tim and Linda Merrill, they own the car, Advanced Industrial Services, Western Lake Erie Insulation, my dad, Doug, my crew…everyone that helps me out on this thing,” said Miller.

Reed and Broc Martin brought the field to green for the 30-lap, $3,000-to-win 410 sprint feature with Reed gaining the advantage. Reed steadily began to pull away while Martin battled with Cap Henry for the runner-up spot with Shawn Valenti, Adam Kekich and Jody Keegan giving chase. While Reed continued to pull away, the race behind him was spectacular involving Martin, Henry, Kekich, Stuart Brubaker, Travis Philo, Danny Smith and Jody Keegan.

At the half-way point Reed found the back of the field and Henry, who took second on lap 11, began to close. Brubaker used the lapped cars to vault into third on lap 18. Reed continued to make fantastic moves in traffic and maintained his advantage over Henry, Brubaker, Martin, Philo, Smith and Chris Andrews with seven laps to go. Reed found a little more breathing room with five laps remaining and drove to the win over Henry, Brubaker, Philo and 11th starter Smith.

Missler and Kester comprised the front row for the 25-lap late model feature and when the green flew the battle was intense. Missler led the first lap by a bumper before Kester took over on the second circuit with Missler, Shiels, and Craig Wolford staying close. Shiels stole second on lap four and quickly closed on Kester. Shiels led by a nose at the flag stand on lap 10 only to see Kester regain the lead by inches the next time at the flags.

With 15 laps to go it was a three car battle up front between Kester, Shiels and Missler. Shiels again inched ahead for the lead on lap 13 as Missler took second. The leaders raced into heavy lapped traffic with just seven laps remaining and Missler took a peak under Shiels for the lead with Kester staying close as Wolford and Mike Bores battled for fourth. The only caution of the feature came on lap 21 for one of the infield tires being moved onto the track. Now with a clear track Shiels drove away for the win over Missler, Kester, Bores and a charging Ken Hahn.

Weaver, who has six wins at Attica in 2017, and Dustin Rall brought the field to green for the 25 lap 305 sprint feature with Weaver rocketing into the lead over Rall, Matt Foos, Miller, Ricky Peterson and Steve Rando. It looked like Weaver might run away and hide until he slipped over the narrow cushion in turn two on lap three, falling back to sixth as Foos took over the point over Rall, Miller, Peterson and Rando.

Foos began to pull away with Miller taking over the runner-up spot on lap six, bringing Peterson to third and Weaver to fourth. Foos padded his lead lap after lap while the battle for second was entertaining between Miller, Peterson and Weaver. Foos found lapped traffic with 12 laps to go but still maintained a big advantage over Peterson, Miller, Weaver, Rall, Nate Dussel, Kyle Capodice and Seth Schneider. While Foos continued to pull away the battle for second continued to heat up between Peterson, Weaver and Miller as the position changed every lap.

With three laps to go Foos made contact with a lapped car entering turn three with both spinning, just after Miller had taken second from Peterson. When the green flew Miller pulled away for the win over Weaver, Peterson, Schneider (from 12th) and Capodice.

Attica Raceway Park will be off for two weeks for the Attica Independent Fair before returning to action Friday, Aug. 18 on WNWO Channel 24/UBS Financial Services/Tusing Builders Night. It will be a FAST point night for both the 410 and 305 sprints and an Attica/Wayne County Speedway Late Model Series Challenge event as well.
